Letterman to apologize to Palin tonight
posted at 8:17 pm on June 15, 2009 by Allahpundit
The Times says he’s apologizing “again” but that implies that he apologized the first time, which he didn’t. He does tonight, but it’s still not clear that he understands what he’s apologizing for. Note to Dave: Yes, the “perception” that you were talking about Palin’s 14-year-old daughter getting knocked up made it a bad joke. The reality that you were talking about her 18-year-old daughter getting knocked up makes it a bad — albeit less bad — joke too. How about eschewing sex jokes about teens altogether in the future, champ? Full transcript via TV Week:
All right, here – I’ve been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week – it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don’t know about it. But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, can’t be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They’re angry at me because they said, ‘How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?’ And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani…And I really should have made the joke about Rudy…” (audience applauds) “But I didn’t, and now people are getting angry and they’re saying, ‘Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who’s completely innocent, minding her own business,’ and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there. So she’s now at the ball game and people think that I made the joke about her. And, but still, I’m wondering, ‘Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?’ I’ve never made jokes like this as long as we’ve been on the air, 30 long years, and you can’t really be doing jokes like that. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself.
“And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer ‘Newshour’ – this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, ‘Oh, boy, now I’m beginning to understand what the problem is here. It’s the perception rather than the intent.’ It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it’s not a very good joke. And I’m certainly – ” (audience applause) “- thank you. Well, my responsibility – I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.” (audience applauds) “Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.” (audience applause)
Does this mean the “Fire Letterman” protest tomorrow is canceled? Aw. While you ponder, here’s a related clip from today’s Cavuto reminding us once again that Fred Thompson is the luckiest man in the world. Exit question: What really motivated Letterman to do this? Sincere remorse? A cynical play for more ratings? Or the simple fact that he was starting to lose sponsors over it?

Letterman Blows!
sonnyspats1 on June 15, 2009 at 8:50 PM
Omitting the name of the daughter implies awareness that the younger daughter was in attendance. The joke was written, vetted, refined and approved. Leaving it ambiguous was their “cover” in case it was taken poorly. I guess they didn’t think there would really be much of any reaction, and thus the fake apology and the silence from most lefties (e.g. what was the big deal?).
Neo on June 15, 2009 at 8:50 PM
It’s not an adequate apology, but this will probably be the end of it. For his own sake, it’s a shame he couldn’t be a more decent human being and just apologize without all the weaseling.
How hard is it to say “I was wrong, I’m sorry, and it won’t happen again”? Without all the misdirection about “perception” vs. “intent”, that is.

This is the best we get from Letterwhore, and I guess we can take small satisfaction from the fact that he has now pissed off his liberal friends by actually apologizing to Sarah Palin.
That’s the last thing they wanted. And now he looks really weak, trying to be snarky for a week and then breaking as soon as the first sponsor bails on him. He comes off as a shallow, weak-willed wuss. Edgy my ass.
And Gov. Palin should not lower herself to commenting on his apology. She has a pipeline to build.

Sorry folks, I think this is sufficient in my book. My problem with this was that he didn’t apologize the first time, he just did some back peddling. This time, he apologizes, and that’s good enough for me. He explains his confusion resulted in the obvious, which was that only Willow was at the game, so everyone took what he said at face value. Now, he has cleared up the matter, explained he was wrong and actually apologized.
Now, if I was Todd, it would have been a different story.

Any underaged girl having sex with any man or woman over the age of 18 is automatically considered statutory rape.
William Amos on June 15, 2009 at 8:59 PM
Any joke about an Adult having sex with a Minor is, by definition, a joke about Statutory RAPE. It is irrelevant whether the minor consents or not. Consent for a child is legally meaningless. Look it up.
Geochelone on June 15, 2009 at 9:00 PM
The probing question I want answered about his apology is this. Letterman, how can you say you were not aware of the daughters presence at the baseball game when Rodriguez, a baseball player, was part and parcel of your missive. Someone on your staff there knew this. Otherwise why was he included? And why have you not apologized to the gentleman. You accused him essentially of being a rapist. Being as 14yo can’t consent in the State of NY.

Does anybody buy this? That he didn’t know either daughter was at the game with Palin?
I didn’t think it was possible but I now think less of him than I did before.
While he was “thinking,” did he think about Willow and Bristol’s feelings? Or Todd’s? Or Sarah’s? Some actual apologetic statements like “Willow and Bristol, I’m sorry for slandering you on national television two nights in a row” would be a lot closer to a real apology. But it appears there will be nothing like that coming from ol’ Dave. In his mind his worst offense is apparently having told an unfunny joke.

Letterman WAS funny, once. At some point, his show began to resemble Jack Cafferty and the “Cafferty File.” Now, he’s just a grouchy old liberal, trying to be cool. If I want to watch emotionally immature, intellectually dishonest, physically unattractive and snide political discourse, I’ll turn on Bill Maher, for five minutes, or until I throw up, whichever comes first. Meh, not much of an apology for not much of a joke.
I gave up on Letterman about 5 years ago. Bitter and snarky is funny, but it’s not the type of humor that careers are made of. Letterman has turned himself into a more-palatable version of Bill Maher, and I won’t watch either. The fact is, Johnny, Jay, even Conan are/were likeable. Sure, the bring the snark, but you could tell beneath it all there was a nice guy behind the public facade. Letterman is proving it’s not an act, it’s who he is.

Dave is lying.
Geochelone on June 15, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Good question. I think most of the people here want to think Letterman was telling a statutory rape joke, because he was the most anti-Bush late night comic, and hasn’t laid a glove on Obama.
That said, how can you read that joke and not think that Bristol Palin was the intended target?
YYZ on June 15, 2009 at 9:11 PM
Letterdouche is old, ugly, jealous and full of hate….his solution? Attack a 14-year old girl, then claim he was a victim of ignorance of her age. TYPICAL. LIBERAL. HYPOCRISY. He is also one hell of a lucky guy it was not MY husband’s minor daughter he disparaged. He would’ve gotten a fist down his geezer throat until his head popped.
Ris4victory on June 15, 2009 at 9:11 PM
The “We were too stupid to check the ESPN highlights or the local CBS station’s tape of the game to see which daughter was there” excuse might be viable — if it wasn’t for the fact he followed the Willow Palin/A-Rod joke on Monday night with the Willow Palin/Elliot Spitzer joke 24 hours later.
That means they had a full day to figure out that Bristol was not at Yankee Stadium and still went ahead with the second joke. Because in the circles Dave and his writing staff hang out with and respect, the facts of who was at the game wasn’t as important as the idea that Bristol’s a whore and Sarah looks like a slut are both laugh riots. Letterman never saw the backlash coming because in a world where you actually believe Keith Olbermann speaks Truth to Power, jokes about conservative women and their daughters are perfectly OK.

YYZ on June 15, 2009 at 9:19 PM
Has anyone looked at Letterman’s previous insults of Bristol to see if he used her name those times? I would bet he uses the name Bristol to mock Bristol.
So I would bet the reason Bristol’s name wasn’t specifically used by the writers was because Bristol wasn’t at the game, yet her daughter was. Had it been Bristol they would have made the joke more descriptive and maybe actually funny for the Palin-haters. They love hearing the ring of that first name almost more than we love to hear the name Sarah. Bristol is their favorite Palin to hate. I think the younger daughter just messed up their ability to write a decent smear, so they wrote one anyway and took their frustration out on her.

David Letterman is such a douche. He continues to degrade the Palin family with his garbage apology.
What’s Willow supposed to get from this “apology”? Is she supposed to take away that David Letterman promises not to call her a slut until the 2012 presidential campaign gets underway?
That kind of promise is worthless, and offensive on its face. Palin should reject it. Die in a fire, David Letterman!

dcwvu on June 15, 2009 at 9:22 PM
In order for it NOT to be a rap joke both of the following conditions have to apply..
1. The daughter had to be Bristol.
2. Bristol had to consent to sex with A-Rod in front of her mother during the 7th inning stretch.
Even if Dave meant Bristol, there is still the consent requirement. So the joke is STILL a rape joke.
But in reality by JUNE 9 Dave knew it was Willow at the game. He may not have known on June 8 though.

Okay, the only reason she was involved is because he put her in the joke.
Honestly, that was a pathetic apology. He shouldn’t apologize for us thinking it was the wrong daughter, but rather that the joke itself was of very poor taste.

Gird your loinses, folks – the MSM will soon be lecturing you as to how Rusty DePass speaks for you and is the fc*king leader of the GOP.
Oh, and Allah – he was a Rudy supporter. That’s some Heart-ache for ya in the inevitable Headlines post.
