Video: Biden on Iran

In his own way, David Gregory dismantled Joe Biden on Meet the Press today. Biden kept tiptoeing around the obvious fact that Iran inexplicably and clumsily threw the election yesterday for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and insisted that the US would continue to press for engagement with whomever the mullahcracy chose as its front man. However, Gregory dug into Biden’s record and found a choice quote that demonstrates Biden’s cluelessness on Iran, and strips credibility from everything Biden says — and Biden apparently doesn’t realize it. The moment comes just before the 2-minute mark:

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

GREGORY: A couple of years ago, you said the following about Ahmadinejad when you were on the campaign trail: “Ahmadinejad, the madman, is in competition with mullahs and ayatollahs who think he’s overstepped his bounds” … Biden called [him] “that wacko guy, the crazy president,” and said he would be in office for a little more than a year before being “taken out” because he threatened Shi’a interests. He’s proved to be more durable than that, hasn’t he?

BIDEN: Yes.

Anyone who thought that Ahmadinejad didn’t at all times represent exactly what the Guardian Council and Supreme Leader Ali Khameini want is projecting Western politics onto Iran — a huge mistake. As this election shows, the GC and Khameini get exactly what they want. Ahmadinejad didn’t get elected president the first time because the people of Iran wanted an obscure mayor of Tehran to run the country; the GC wanted Ahmadinejad for their own reasons. He is entirely their creature, which is why they made sure that the election this week was nothing more than a formality, although they certainly botched it badly in the end.

Note that he also dodges the question of whether Iran is a democracy. That reflects Biden’s Inspector Clouseau approach to Iran in this interview. He’s talking about “counting the votes” in an election in which the mullahs hand-picked the candidates, including the now-arrested Mirhossein Mousavi, the supposed “reformer” who found out a little late that he was just a sop to the masses. The vote count is about as relevant as the tallies for an election in Soviet Russia during the Cold War. The problem isn’t the vote count; it’s that the election was never free or fair from the very beginning.

The administration seems to keep laboring under the delusion that Iran is anything other than a theocracy run by a group of mullahs who hold all of the real power, and have no intention of sharing it. Elections are just a way to mollify the 70 million Iranians by offering them the illusion of power sharing. When the administration wakes to that fact, then they will understand that all of this handwringing over polls and vote counting is entirely ludicrous, as is the notion of continuing to offer dialogue to a regime that has made the perhaps-fatal mistake of making all of this even too obvious for the Western media.

And remember that Barack Obama chose Biden as a running mate for his foreign policy expertise.

Update: What could possibly make this more ridiculous? Joe Biden letting people know that he still is considering a run at the top job when Obama leaves office. (Both links via William Amos)

Update II: Had the wrong clip initially, but it should be fixed now.

Not if 20 or 30 sniper teams are dispersed throughout the U.S., similar to the D.C. couple. Or, if a few Beslan type school hostage situations crop up. Or even a India type mass murder event. There is a limit, and right now there is an uneasy simmering under the surface of the citizenry. If gloves come off, there wil be a terrific backlash. Dear Leader has made us into a weak horse,..we’ll see if he can live with the aftermath.

the only missing major player is Russia.

Not missing the story is out there

On June 9, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates came up with a sensational proposal:

“We’ve made a number of offers in terms of how to partner, and I think there are still some opportunities – for example, perhaps putting radars in Russia, having data exchange centers in Russia.

Some analysts were quick to call the offer “a breakthrough”. In Moscow they labeled it “day-dreaming”.

“A meaningful dialogue on cooperation in responding to potential missile risks can only start after the US renounces its plans to create what is known as the third site of the strategic missile defense system,” Andrey Nesterenko, Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman said.

Joe Biden’s cluelessness in foreign policy areas was manifestly clear during the campaign. He talked about how the U.S.A. forced Hizbollah to leave Lebanon. They control the southern part of the country from the Litani River to the Israel border. They have 50,000 armed terrorists there ready to take over the country–and are part of the government.

None of the Left Wing Media (not MSM) called him on his stupid mistatements. They flew excellent “air cover for him.

Caper29 on June 14, 2009 at 2:55 PM

Does that imply that they also “guessed wrong” about what the impact of immediate tax cuts would have been, such as a payroll tax holiday or other, more permanent cuts?

Their main argument against them (well, besides just being against them because we can’t have people deciding what to do with their own money, can we?) was that people would just use the money to pay down debt. Well, now we’ve got the same amount of debt amongst households (check out the first chart at this link for the Household Net Worth to Debt ratio)

http://zerohedge.blogspot.com/2009/06/household-driven-deflation.html

while the government is even more indebted due to the stimulus spending and the stimulus spending isn’t accomplishing what they said it would accomplish.

At least if people had paid down debt, that would have been a good thing, since it needs to get paid eventually.

Yes, I watched it and it was shocking the way Gregory lit into Biden. He really called Biden out on everything including the failure of the Stimulus (that 150,000 jobs Obama says he created or saved was made up per Gregory), the massive federal budget deficits, the failure of Obama to reduce the unemployment rate (at 9.4% and could rise further), the proposed healthcare bill etc.

Wow! Maybe David Gregory and Bill Maher are proof that even some Obots are starting to put down the kool-aid and waking up to reality. This bodes ill for Obama when members of his own State Run Media are starting to challenge him only after 5 months.

Last I’d heard, Alaska was pretty good off, financially, in comparison, with other states, thru this economic mess. Yet, she was SUCH a risk to some, that to be VP was scoffed at, and berated.

Obama, and Biden were trusted more, with the economy, and at some point, people even thought he was to be trusted more with foreign policy.

Now look where we are.

What’s really sad is…if in 8 years (God forbid) Biden makes a run….I’ll bet we’d never hear a peep, joke, or demeaning comment about his age.

Obligatory quote:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Might I comment on the Yeats poem, The Second Coming? And why people ought to take him seriously?

Yeats is part of a tradition of modern intellectuals who perceived that secularism had successfully rooted Christianity from the world, but were unsuccessful in planting their utopia. Consequently, everything is going to hell and we’re powerless to stop it. You can’t put toothpaste back in the tube.

These liberal blowhards don’t know what they’re doing. They won their little cultural revolution and yet they flail helplessly, always promising the solution is just one generation away.

Modern liberalism is nothing but razzle dazzle. But I guess if everything’s gonna go to hell, it might as well be with a laugh.

Thanks Bidem, Obama.

“We are not going to allow Iran to go nuclear.”

What could be more comforting than such an assurance from Joe “Foreign Policy” Biden.

God help us all.

Not any more.
Remember: Dissent is patriotic. Trolling is just annoying. Tossing around ad hominems and hijacking threads will get you banned.

Well, that was a short commenting career.

Short, and yet oh so brilliant.

Thanks for doing the housecleaning, Ed.

Joe Biden will always be the faithful, loyal, hard-working Liberal America Politician and side-kick to Dear One.

Sort of the Stimpy to Obama’s Ren!

SuperCool on June 15, 2009 at 12:05 AM

Biden is Obama’s assassination insurance. So is Nancy Pelosi.

No one would kill Obama knowing that Biden and Pelosi are waiting in the wings.

As for a previous comment;

Biden is Pinky to Obama’s Brain. (With apologies to “Pinky and the Brain”.)

So here this guy is, the actual VP of the United States, and the MSM is still attacking Sarah Palin. Something’s gotta give.

Here in Brunswick, Georgia, on July 4th, we’re having a big TEA PARTY with lots of speakers, hot dogs, cokes, people, signs, and general all-round hell-raising against this incompetent spend-everything “government”. There will be LOTS of Tea Parties that day, including one in Washington, D.C.
I’m sure the mainstream media will tab us all redneck teabaggers, since we’re not the kind of protesters they like. We shave, work, and actually know what we’re talking about.
Ahh, yes. America. Land of the led-by-idiots.

Did anyone notice Letterman making jokes about Biden’s daughter?

Update: What could possibly make this more ridiculous? Joe Biden letting people know that he still is considering a run at the top job when Obama leaves office.

Great! Maybe we should start a PAC for him.

Heh. America ran in fear from a rural state Governor as Vice Presidential candidate because she wasn’t from the northeast, and ended up with this impossibly clownish tool.

Two Presidential runs – 22,000 total primary votes.
The entire right side of the electorate knows he’s a tool – 0 votes.

300,000,000 people – 22,000 fans. Run, Joe, Run!

Roadking85 on June 15, 2009 at 10:25 AM

Barack Obama chose Biden as a running mate for his foreign policy expertise. So far all of Obama’s policies are foreign and Biden’s is of no help, as usual.
