Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the Week?

posted at 11:03 am on June 14, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Kick your feet up on your desks and relax — it’s time for the Obamateurism of the Week poll. Perhaps later you can stroll down a local river, assuming that you too can walk on water, but right now we need you to cast your vote, and you can even print it regardless of whether you’re in Cairo or not. Don’t forget to take a magnetic compass when you do, though — otherwise, you may wind up on a tarmac in Bermuda before anyone realizes you’ve arrived!

Previous “winners”:

  • “If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.”
  • “We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem.”
  • Siccing Tim Geithner and Charlie Rangel on tax cheats
  • Phony Churchill quote on torture throws Grandpa under the bus
  • Torture probe flip-flop
  • Obama covers up IHS while quoting Jesus
  • Austrian is a language?
  • Obama bows to the Saudi king
  • 1908 Model T got better gas mileage than today’s SUVs

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Illustrations by Chris Muir of Day by Day. Be sure to read the adventures of Sam, Zed, Damon, and Jan every day!

Flashing his soles to the camera while talking to Netanyahu

Code to the Arab world: I hate the Joooos, just like my mentors.

I’m voting for Flashing his soles to the camera while talking to Netanyahu. While a stupid move, I think he knew exactly what he was doing and what it would mean to the Israelis. Arrogance personified.

Why is he wearing his coat in the Oval Office? I thought he turned up the heat to go coatless.

Flashing his soles to the camera while talking to Netanyahu

Obama talks about appreciating the cultural values and norms of non-Western societies all the time. What better way for him to signal his solidarity with his “Muslim roots” than to show disdain for the Israeli PM.

It would actually be encouraging to believe this was an unintentional blunder. Sadly, that’s hard to believe.

cruadin on June 14, 2009 at 11:10 AM

Ed, your going to be accused of staking the vote with the picture you used. That said I voted for the shoes on the desk also.

Cindy Munford on June 14, 2009 at 11:13 AM

I think that his attributions of scientific accomplishments to Islam is the greatest blunder. With those, he didn’t just insult the Israelis, but also every thinking person on the planet.

Islam invented printing 24% (53 votes)

I’m with the 24%. Ridiculous.

The Compass one was equally ridiculous. I could have gone either way.

I know I shouldn’t cut this fool any slack, but the shoe sole thing and the walk on water one were just minor slip ups.

As far as I’m concerned, anyone who puts his feet up on a desk like that is a rank amateur, with no respect for his furniture never mind the office he is temporarily occupying.

I thought it was the muslims that were offended by the soles. Isn’t that why President Bush 41 reffered to Saddam as Sodom or something to offend him? And the shoe throwing incident involving President Bush 43.

Too cool for school. I guess the reason that American Jews won’t be bothered is that they apparently couldn’t care less about Israel.

Sorry but the Obamanism has to be his congratulating the people and government of Iran for their vigourous presidential debates and fair election the day before the massive sham exploded in his face and he was backpedaling quicker than Lance Armstrong.

eaglewingz08 on June 14, 2009 at 11:56 AM

I think the shoe sole stuff was just a little nod to Adlai Stevenson, not an insult to anyone.

I picked the risible “Muslims invented printing” b.s., since the Koreans and Chinese, who used woodblocks to print Buddhist texts as early as 800 A.D., would be surprised to learn that their epochal breakthrough was claimed by the pirates of the pedophile “prophet” a world and centuries away.

Can we assume that when Zero’s feet are ON the desk, there is nobody UNDER the desk?

Mr. Grump on June 14, 2009 at 12:02 PM

An Israeli cartoonist drew the following cartoon a few days before the “feet on desk” picture was released:

http://shaycharka.blogspot.com/2009/06/blog-post_09.html

According to the cartoonist: Obama and his team give the feeling that they own the place, so that’s how he drew him.

Phoenician on June 14, 2009 at 12:02 PM

When I saw that photo, I wondered if that was the ‘Resolute Desk’. With President Obama, I would expect that to be the case. I don’t believe that this was a casual pose… but if it was, it would be an interesting insight into his respect for the Office.

Mr Michael on June 14, 2009 at 12:03 PM

Mr. Grump on June 14, 2009 at 12:02 PM

You missed the FUN stuff. Obama actually mocked someone else for spilling a drink on that desk

“Uh oh,” Obama said as staff members rushed to sop up the spill.

“All right,” Obama said with a smile. “It’s the Resolution Desk. It’s only like 100 years old.”

Alas, the president was off a bit.

It’s actually the Resolute Desk, constructed with timbers from the H.M.S. Resolute, a ship Great Britain gave to the U.S. in 1879.

thmcbb on June 14, 2009 at 1:10 PM

I voted for the shoes.

I see two sides to this. It could be that everything Mr. Obama and those advising him have done so far to irritate and upset our allies as well as embolden and sharpen our enemies sabers, has been done with calculated forethought. He and his officials have stated on more than one occasion that their goal is to “change the world”.

On the other hand, his narcissism might actually be making him think that he really is a renowned historian and smarter than everyone else so that these blunders and misteps are brushed off as fantasy to anyone who notices.

Either way the unchecked power makes me pause with a bit of trepidation to wonder just what his final end goal is and how far he will go to get it.

Islam invented printing? How ignorant of Western History do you need to be to declare that?

Now we know.

Aronne on June 15, 2009 at 9:21 AM

I know the Islam connection to the showing the soles of your feet, but a true Muslim would not show his soles to anyone due to the fact that it would bring shame to his family name to disrespect anyone. Having said that, someone who has no respect for anyone, or honor would indeed use this belief to show disrespect. Now take into account that Obama is completely clueless on history, culture, or the respect for beliefs I think he is just slacking in the oval office. I think we give him to much credit for being this crafty.

Just a note on accuracy with respect to two of your points.

Obama did not say Islam “invented” the compass or printing.

He said: It was innovation in Muslim communities that developed … our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing … .

And that certainly seems to be correct.
