BBC: US deliberately kept Britain in the dark over Uighurs, Bermuda

posted at 10:15 am on June 13, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Yesterday, when the news broke that the British were “pissed” about Barack Obama’s dump of four of the Gitmo Uighurs onto Bermuda, the White House tried to spin it by claiming they thought Bermuda’s premier had included the UK in their end of the discussions.  The BBC reports today that their sources inside the White House dispute that.  Obama deliberately kept London in the dark until he thought he had a fait accompli -but the White House now claims it was for the UK’s own good:

A senior US official has told the BBC Washington decided not to tell London ahead of time about a deal to resettle four Guantanamo detainees in Bermuda. …

The unnamed senior official also told the BBC that Washington was attempting to shield the UK from Chinese anger. …

Pressed on whether the US had told the British government, an unnamed state department official was quoted as saying: “We did talk to them before the Uighurs got on the plane.”

Now a senior US official has told the BBC it was a deliberate decision not to consult London on the resettlement, after other countries came under pressure from China not to accept the Uighurs.

In a highly unusual move, a senior US official said Washington opted to keep details of the deal from London until the last minute to enable Britain to deny all knowledge of the deal and thus avoid China’s anger, says the BBC’s Washington correspondent Kim Ghattas.

They talked to them “before the Uighurs got on the plane”?  Well, that was certainly sweet of them.  Did they mention on which flight they’d be coming to Bermuda, or did they make the Brits guess that, too?

It’s a highly unusual move, all right.  I don’t recall the last time an ally sent trained terrorists into a territory for which the other ally had responsibility for security without their permission.  Why?  Because it hasn’t ever happened before now.

So, to our British friends: how does it feel to have Obama make security decisions about your territory without bothering to consult you at all?  The liberal press in the UK used to deride Tony Blair as George Bush’s poodle; what does that make Gordon Brown in relation to Barack Obama?  It’s a good thing that arrogant Bush isn’t running things in Washington any more, huh?

I don’t recall the last time an ally sent trained terrorists into a territory for which the other ally had responsibility for security without their permission. Why? Because it hasn’t ever happened before now.

And it still hasn’t happened. What you seem to be forgetting is that The Precedent doesn’t consider the UK to be an ally. The Precedent looks at Europe as the enemy, because he is on the other side. As far as he’s concerned, the US is now allies with Cuba and Venezuela and Iran …

The boxed set of DVDs for the British Prime Minister and iPod to the Queen were not gaffes. They were well thought out “gifts” expressing this junta’s true feelings of the relationship between the US and UK.

The Precedent is on the terrorists’ side. He is a traitor, plain and simple. How many more times does he has to show this to everyone before they understand?

What have we come to? Why on God’s green earth, doesn’t Obama just say Gitmo is going to stay open–period. It must be becoming obvious to him right about now, that all the talk in the world isn’t going to settle the Middle East. BL@KBIRD on June 13, 2009 at 10:50 AM

The other lesson to take from this is that we can almost never trust the Obama administration to tell the truth the first time.

When this blew up, they said “we thought they were talking to the British.” Now we learn keeping the Brits in the dark until the terrorists were practically en route to a territory with British ties was the plan.

There are reasons to keep certain information under wraps. As we were constantly reminded during Bush’s tenure, political advantage is not a good reason for secrecy.

Since Barry Soetoro, in the guise of Barack Hussein Obama, President of the United States, has seen fit to apologize for me on a number of occasions, let me return the favor.

Dear Citizens of the United Kingdom:

On behalf of the citizens of the United States of America, I most humbly apologize for the actions of the individual who claims to be our President. His recent actions in relocating trained terrorists to the shores of one of your Commonwealth’s members are an obvious affront to your sovereignty and show a phenominal lack of respect for our historic friendship, and in many cases, common heritage.
I sincerely apologize for the incompetence and arrogance of Mr Soetoro, a.k.a. Obama.

Dear British friends,

I know many of you read this blog, not necessarily posters, but I’ve spoken with you on my visits to London. You all thought I was an over the top right wing American who cracks funny jokes about Obama. You also thought my views on him were inteperate and extreme. You all think he is so cool and exactly what the US needs to “reform” its image in the world. My sarcastic remarks about the One were looked at derisively, yet we remained civil in our discussions.

I think now you are beginning to see what I was driving at in my remarks. You didn’t think the One was a marxist or that he was ruining not only our economy, but taking your economy down with us (although I must admit you have done that extremely well on your own).

You are now experiencing first hand the results of what 52% of our electorate did to the world. I hope you start speaking out against the asinine policies of the One and treat him like the pariah you thought George Bush was. No good can come from this administration.

By the way, safe travels on your holidays to Bermuda.

With a destroyed nation. It is impossible to just recover from this sort of insanity and continue on, as normal. Too much damage has already been done. We have seen how easy it is for a junta to gain control of Washington and just run roughshod over any and every law they want. We have seen the inability of other arms of government to stop them, or even try to. This is nothing but the extension of the refusal by many (including the bloggers, here) to even try to follow the Constitution on one of its simplest and most direct instructions – or even to ask that it be followed.

The trust has been killed and I can’t see it just popping back. We’ve seen too much.
