Video: Palin on Today
posted at 10:06 am on June 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Sarah Palin turned in an impressive performance in an 11-minute appearance on the Today show with Matt Lauer this morning. She deftly handled both politics and economics when it came to the new natural-gas pipeline accord Palin reached, parrying tough but fair questions from Lauer. She also rose to the occasion when Lauer inevitably asked her about David Letterman (via The Right Scoop):
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
This interview shows both the potential and the peril of Sarah Palin. She has improved considerably in handling the national media. On both economics and politics, Lauer couldn’t dent her (and just to emphasize, Lauer was treating her fairly), and had the Letterman controversy not existed, that aspect of her performance would have been the headline here. Instead, the three minutes or so in the middle of this 11-minute interview that has nothing to do with governing or policy will be all that the public will remember or want to see.
That could be the overall aim of Palin’s opponents. If David Letterman has to eat some crow every few months for his personal attacks on Palin, does that really matter to him? He has a contract with CBS for the next three years, at which point he’d probably retire anyway. Letterman and his ilk can continue to make all of the coverage about Palin revolve around her daughters, forcing her to respond and to look less serious as a politician, in a way that the media would never do to a man or to a liberal – as Palin said, no one did it to Obama, nor should they.
If enough of them do it, the downside for her attackers will be small, and the upside will be to kneecap Palin before she can threaten Democrats in a future election.
Update: Just to make clear, I’m not suggesting at all that Republicans distance themselves from Palin. At some point, we will need to let the Letterman-like provocations go and have her focus on national politics, where she has clearly improved. Promoting Palin as a victim (although entirely justified) won’t make her a compelling force in politics.

You need to wear another Obama button; somebody might mistake you for an impartial observer otherwise.
“We deplore partisanship…” — yeah, right.
You might want to read what I write rather than relying on pictures, particularly in terms of President Obama before you assume I am pro-Obama. I have been a strong defender of Gov. Palin in the past, and I defend her in terms of the obnoxious David Letterman slur. On the other hand, she has problems. To deny them serves neither her or the Republican Party.

The story of the day isn’t the Matt Lauer interview: enough people saw that this morning to get that Sarah got the pipeline deal done with Exxon.
The professional pols will look at the interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN this afternoon. That was a polished, relaxed, and telegenic Palin; light years ahead of where she was a year ago. Her CNN interview was a triumph. Relatively little on Dave; the whole first half was on the Pipeline deal.
The lady is ready to get out there for the Congress Critters and start collecting IOU’s, like Tricky Dick did in ’66. She was almost as polished as Mittens, without the annoying phoniness that makes Mittens such a joy to watch.

This is a headline on ABC:
Oh it was just a “Joke” about her daughter. Just a Joke. And now Palin wants an “UPRISING” AGAINST poor Dave over a “joke”.
Sickening. And the picure of her is horrible. The State Run Media makes me want to vomit. It is so oppressive.

I hate to just be an echo, but your last 2 paragraphs say at all. I can’t add to that!
I have to say that I am so glad that she did well. I knew she could do the rest of the stuff – the real stuff, but I wondered (as a wife and mother myself) how on earth she would be able to handle this. It seemed almost no win. But, she and Todd together are rising to the occasion (with some help from lots of directions) – sucks to be Letterman this week! Yay!

This is unbelievable: Here is what ABC said:
So Dave offered an apology but STILL those Palins REFUSED to go on his show and he was good enough to invite them (during a critical ratings week). Those Palin’s are bad bad bad. They were just comments about the governor and her daughter, just comments, that all.
WTF? We are living in an Orwellian MSM Nightmare.

What did you expect from ABC? They are the network that dishonestly edited her interview with Charles Gibson, don’t forget. Dishonest reporting is their forte.

infidel4life on June 12, 2009 at 8:03 PM
Wow! The Gov really handled this interview like a master. She didn’t let Lauer get away with trying to diminish the severity of what Letterman did by reading Letterman’s lame statement as if that made it all okay. Think about it, Letterman wasn’t apologizing for demaning the 14 yr old girl I was demeaning the 18 year old mother. Bravo for Sarah she speaks for all parents when she vigorouly defends her daughter and all girls!
CCRWM on June 12, 2009 at 8:09 PM
Letterman invited Palin on his show to apologize to her personally.
She said no. She turned down the big apology. It could have helped her stuffy image greatly. She doesn’t know what she is doing or some adviser is giving her bad advice.
It’s also amusing to see people that say they never watch Letterman, or haven’t watched him in years, claim to know all about his show. You obviously missed him doing Clinton intern jokes every show for 10 years. Some liberal he is.
Letterman will milk this Palin fallout for all it’s worth. It’s an easy joke, just like Clinton intern jokes are still easy. These shows all rely on easy jokes. but you have to have a sense of humor to see that.

Who planted this vision in your head. Down deep you must know she is young and a Governor of a very important state. She already was a VP candidate and commanded National attention. You must realize what the next step might be. And now you are losing sleep over it. So you go on a message board and it is obvious you don’t even believe you own BS.

True enough but doesn’t work in reality because there is no Palin cult.
It’s a Palin majority and it cuts across partisan lines. All you have to do is look at the numbers of people who come out to see her whenever she gives a speech.
It would be a cult if it was a fanatical minority screaming about her.

SHAME on CBS for insulting Flight Attendants, a Govenor, WOMEN and YOUNG GIRLS.
SHAME on CBS’s Katie Couric; as the mother of young girls, her silence is appalling.
I have a daughter who is smart enough to see that CBS is in the tank for obama/Dems. Not all girls have my daughters self esteem; for them, I weep. It is so sad that in 2009, a major network allows the outright bashing of women and young girls.

“It is easier, to study up and get smarter than it is to not to have a personality and to try to get one.”

This quote symbolizes Sarah’s improving performances today in the Lauer and Blitzer interviews. And over the next 3 and 1/2 years she will even get better. But the key is her charisma, authenticity and her eloquence, when unleashed, will be political forces of nature that no one will be able to hold back. Folks, Sarah is only 45. We’re looking at Tiger Woods in his prime.

Dave Letterman,
I sure enjoyed being on Letterman a few months ago. As the 1st sitting president to appear on your show, I hope it helped your ratings.
To pay me back, it would be swell if you were to attack Gov Palin. She sure is drawing a huge crowd in NY, as well as making huge gains on a pipeline deal.
Sincerely,
Your Buddy Barack
P.S. I appreciate all the great work you and Katie Couric do for me!

Palin has used her family as political props since the night she debuted as McCain number two. She has never stopped using her family as political props. She will be thrilled to have a Letterman or any entertainer who cares to take on her family because it allows her to use her family as political props – in spades.
Palin believes there are enough women in America “just like her” who will vote for her to be president for no other reason than they enjoy watching her use her family as political props.
It must be very comforting to have such a simplistic view of the world.
Palin is going to be very, very surprised come Election Day ’12.

Someone at HotAir needs to post the interview with Blitzer on CNN….she did very well on that one, too. I’m pissed at Letterman and have sent in a letter to each of his sponsors, him, my local CBS affiliate, etc. We have to keep the pressure on Dave, but we also need to listen to what she said about national policy today (in both interviews).

I don’t think that Sarah will run for reelection in Alaska.
I think the game kicks into high gear next year for her. Additionally – being a Governor has drawbacks when you’re politically moving into position. Ask Mark Sanford – he has about the entire Chicago Democratic Party Machine on his “six” in South Carolina.
If Palin is free from the Governor’s mansion – she’ll be able to go hog wild on the fundraising. Her salary (which by the way was only $150K TOTAL for her and Todd combined in 2006) … is going to go through the roof once she gets out there and can do speaking engagements without the threat of ethics charges.
It’s her game to lose right now. We’ll see what she can do. She’s not a sure thing by far – but she’s moving in the right direction.

liberals watching this interview have got to be worried so expect more personal smears, lies, and hateful attacks against Palin from the “smart ones”.
Palin has clearly matured in her handling of the media.
I don’t know if this is her becoming more experienced or more examples of the McCain campaign’s ineptness in handling her.
It could be a little of both but the fact remains she did very well in handling Matt.
But the Captain is right that great dialog concerning the issues is overshadowed by the “Jerry Springer” news bites that are used for headlines.
Even though Matt was fair, I have a hard time believing that he would have pressed Obama as “going to far” in defending his children if they were talked about in such a manner.liberals and their friends in the media would have been unified in the condemnation of Letterman and probably would have demanded his resignation.
This interview is a good sign that “Palin being Palin” is more than capable of handling the National spotlight.
The personal attacks and lies propagated against her combined with a bias media will certainly work in her favor with the public if it is handled right by her campaign staff.
Most everyone loves an underdog.
Palin’s sharp mind, charming personality, record of achievement, and aggressive determination will resonate with the American people at a time when “hope and change” will be shown for the total con job that it is.
Baxter Greene on June 13, 2009 at 5:13 AM
I just don’t get it…. What’s it going to take to convince people that Palin is ready to run for POTUS in 2012? Do you think Obama is ready? Hell, he’s been in the job for a half a year (if you count his days in his fantasy “Office of the President-Elect”) and he still isn’t ready.
8 to 12 years? You can’t be serious. I wonder, what kind of benchmark do you and Coulter use to gauge “readiness?”
UltimateBob on June 13, 2009 at 5:25 AM
Agreed. Stumbled on this live over here in Australia, no mean feat considering its on around 4am.
Admittedly I only caught the tail end, so I missed the foreign policy discussion. What I did see sure was Letterman heavy. Palin must understand that she is weakened the more interviewers go in this territory, she comes off as either a a victim or tabloid fodder. She should definitely refuse to answer these types of question and keep that stance even from sympathetic media. Gravitas is not a word you’d associate with Palin, its a quality i think most people would want from a future President. This tabloid stuff doesn’t help
PunditFight on June 13, 2009 at 8:36 AM
I actually think she needs to grab this and run with it.
She is a parent – and this was below the belt from a high profile ‘comedian’ like Letterman. For that reason alone she is unquestionably given the benefit of the doubt in responding.
She was and is mistreated by a severely biased media (as were Colin Powell/Condi Rice/Clarence Thomas) and she should highlight the blatant bias/propaganda that right leaning types endure.
Letterman is a shell of his former self. He was once bright, original and obscurely funny. Then he lost the Tonight Show gig to Leno, got separated from the ‘Late Night’ crew and started his bitter nightly rant on CBS.
Letterman crushes Leno on talent and material before ‘the battle’ – but afterward Letterman can’t hold Leno’s mic. F@#$ing ‘Jaywalking’ beats anything Letterman would ever again conceive. Find a dumb So Cal resident. Wow – we’ve got Dave-crushing a bit.
Sarah Barracuda should finish the job that Jay was too nice to finish.

They need to put WILLOW on TV.Let her speak out against Letterman. If, as the left believes, she’s old enough to be joke fodder about statutory rape, then she’s old enough to put on TV to blast that dirty old man. Let’s see if America sides with a 14 year old girl, or a senile old pedophile.

Yahoo (Left-wing) News has had this deceptive lead headline for the last 10 hours:

I’ll take Quayle-in-a-dress over Jimmah-with-a-tan.

Letterman is a worthless unfunny punk.

The left must be REALLY nervous seeing her stand her ground and come up firing on all cylinders… I say that having watched the first 30 seconds on that latest Keith Olbermann’s video link…

She certainly looks and acts more confident.
Where’d that left hand come from?

I have a very controversial theory. I don’t think a majority of women WANT a woman as President, but I think they’d welcome and rally around Palin for VP. I believe the strongest ticket for us is Huckabee/Palin. Go ahead and say I’m crazy, but depending on how bad the economy is in 2012, they could be our strongest.

As I said in another post, Letterman did her a favor gaining her airtime.
Palin can only do so much in that window, and the most important move for her now is to present a sane appearance to counter the propaganda
We are in the mess we are in thanks to McCain and campaign finance reform. The press has been handed the podium and all others excluded. It takes a sledge hammer to break through a press blackout
After the failed election McCain pulled his references out from under her leaving her floating, and the party RINOs hope she sinks.
All in all this is a plus for Palin in the next election, because McCain is toxic and the old party RINOs are dead in the water.
It is a long way to the next election. She doesn’t need to propose a manifesto. She needs to be remind people she is alive. She grows her image with multiple public events to replace the images created on her behalf

Benny’s just running out of ammo. The nastiness is becoming counterproductive.

I didn’t think Matt L. was “fair.” I thought he was typically dismissive of women’s complaints.
I’m thoroughly sick of it.

I am NOT dismissing your theory. I still believe there is a hostility out there towards Sarah by millions of women based on Sarah’s appearance or the perception that she is a bimbo, unintelligent, not curious, or incompetent.
I received a lot of criticism yesterday when I suggested that Sarah ‘debeautified’ or ‘deglamorized’ her appearance yesterday by having her hair up to present a ‘librarian’ look and wanted to accuse me of gratuitously focusing too much on her beauty.
I have taken a personal vow to never mention Sarah’a looks unless it relates to a political issue. And I think what Sarah was trying to accomplish yesterday in her interview was not only to provide concise, clear-cut and cogent answers but also to come across differently to the public, especially to those women who may be on the fence about Sarah’s potential to be POTUS.
I think what Sarah did yesterday was absolutely brilliant. One poster also mentioned how she exposed her neck (like Audrey Hepburn) to make herself appear more vulnerable. But what I believe she did was to match up what came out of her mouth to the appearance she was trying to project. Sarah did indeed yesterday in the Today interview and on CNN came across as more polished, intelligent, competent and above all projected more gravitas.
Great job, governor and future Madame President!

Letterman may or may not be liberal; I don’t really know (but I can surmise based on the business he’s in). Basically, he’s just a no class, unfunny, aging hack comic who thinks he can make any sort of vicious remark with impunity about anyone he pleases. He’s always been adolescent, so why is anyone surprised by his juvenile sense of humor? He’s the 62 year old equivalent of the 12 year old fart joke.

Your thoughts on the CNN interview that was has extensive notes on this thread and now its own thread, please.

I am well and truly sick of this Palin bashing crap. I amy be a computer Knave, and still use Yahoo, but did you see their treatment of things in their headlines? Palin “Uncomfortable” in Lauer interview; and now that the detestable Letterman is going to get a ratings boost?
paragon27x on June 13, 2009 at 6:40 PM
Guess I am not too surprised that Letterman will get a small ratings spike for being an A-hole, but what is up with Yahoo?

Sheesh, Ed – I get tired of this hand wringing and whining over Sarah Palin. When are you going to get it through your head that it is not because she is Sarah Palin, but because she is a died in the wool conservative that she gets subjected to this. The press would be, and will be, trying to kneecap any true conservative in coming elections in order to pre-select the Republican nominee to help the Democrats win. It’s that simple. It doesn’t matter whether it is Sarah Palin or someone else – if they are a true conservative, they will be subjected to this character assassination. The approach may be a bit different, but the game plan will remain the same.
To avoid all your tearing of clothing and gnashing your teeth (and just to make you feel better overall), why don’t you just support John McCain again in the next election. I think he would be a liberal-approved candidate for the Republicans and would not have to undergo the level of attacks that a true conservative would. Everyone would sing Kum Bah Ya and the world would be a wonderful place with Democrats in charge forever. If you want a conservative, though, it’s going to be a bit tougher and nastier. The media learned in the last election that they need have no pretensions of objectivity and I am sure they are going to ratchet it up even further in the next election. Do you honestly believe that if Republicans nominate someone other than Sarah Palin the press will cut them slack if they are at all conservative? I got news for you – that ain’t happening.
