Video: Palin on Today
posted at 10:06 am on June 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Sarah Palin turned in an impressive performance in an 11-minute appearance on the Today show with Matt Lauer this morning. She deftly handled both politics and economics when it came to the new natural-gas pipeline accord Palin reached, parrying tough but fair questions from Lauer. She also rose to the occasion when Lauer inevitably asked her about David Letterman (via The Right Scoop):
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
This interview shows both the potential and the peril of Sarah Palin. She has improved considerably in handling the national media. On both economics and politics, Lauer couldn’t dent her (and just to emphasize, Lauer was treating her fairly), and had the Letterman controversy not existed, that aspect of her performance would have been the headline here. Instead, the three minutes or so in the middle of this 11-minute interview that has nothing to do with governing or policy will be all that the public will remember or want to see.
That could be the overall aim of Palin’s opponents. If David Letterman has to eat some crow every few months for his personal attacks on Palin, does that really matter to him? He has a contract with CBS for the next three years, at which point he’d probably retire anyway. Letterman and his ilk can continue to make all of the coverage about Palin revolve around her daughters, forcing her to respond and to look less serious as a politician, in a way that the media would never do to a man or to a liberal – as Palin said, no one did it to Obama, nor should they.
If enough of them do it, the downside for her attackers will be small, and the upside will be to kneecap Palin before she can threaten Democrats in a future election.
Update: Just to make clear, I’m not suggesting at all that Republicans distance themselves from Palin. At some point, we will need to let the Letterman-like provocations go and have her focus on national politics, where she has clearly improved. Promoting Palin as a victim (although entirely justified) won’t make her a compelling force in politics.

When you turn on a television you have the choice of channels, your choice is tracked and given as ratings which tells the advertisers if they are getting their money’s worth. Just don’t tune in to Letterman and go a step forward and get a listing of their sponsors, email them you are not going to view the show anymore. Once they lose the sponsors, the show and letterman will go away.
Make your choice and make it heard loud and clear. If anyone can supply a list of their sponsors, post it and give them your thoughts.

Someone just posted this over at Conservatives4Palin:
“Just minutes ago, both Norah O’Donnell and John Harwood (both are Obots) of MSNBC just gave Sarah major KUDOS for her Today show interview. I don’t know the name of the MSNBC show that comes on at this time.
Sarah won them over and they were saying that this was a “teaching” and “Sister Soulja” moment. Norah said she was really touched by what Sarah said and she felt Sarah reached a lot of women today. You could see that O’Donnell and Harwood were quite moved.
This interview was a HOMERUN for Sarah if she can change the hearts and minds of some of the OBOTS on MSNBC. People are starting to see that Sarah is not the MSM caricature but a real and likeable person.”
Can Hot Air possibly locate and post that video? That would be priceless! Maybe time to look out the window for flying pigs!

Nah, instead it will be an predictable Allah post with “Palin not running for reelection” and “Heart Ache”; a short bit on how this is bad for her chances in 2012, capping it all of with a snarky comment/exit question.

I get where you’re coming from, but look at Bill Clinton. He originated from pretty ordinary stock too, grew up in a small town, came accompanied by personal and family drama, not the least of which being the endless string of “bimbo eruptions” as Betsey Wright used to call them. I know that when he first came on the scene, I never thought voters would elect a bubba from a little bitty state like Arkansas, but lo and behold: He served two terms. Granted, although he certainly never got the sort of kid-glove treatment from the media that Obama receives, they were not as hard on him as they are on Gov. Palin. But there was still scrutiny. People just didn’t care. And I don’t think people care about Gov. Palin’s private life either. That’s why it’s good that she’s out there now doing and talking about other things — like the NG pipeline — instead of EVERY headline being about the latest family drama. Sure, Today wouldn’t have bothered to interview her were it not that the Letterman thing is big news right now, but so what? It got her a platform to discuss some meaningful issues, and she was on her game. She was strong, assertive, knew her stuff and didn’t back down. The good thing about the Bristol stuff is that come 2012, or 2016, or whenever, it’s going to be such old news that if any left-wing hack tries to use it against her, they’re just going to look even more pathetic than they already do now.
NoLeftTurn on June 12, 2009 at 2:34 PM
Sarah should simply reverse her decision not to appear on Letterman’s show, then – without telling anyone at the show – bring Todd.
Bet Dave apologizes for real then.

It’s hard enough to overcome life but to have a media bent on destroying you and your family takes some real skill to overcome. I will be hoping and praying for her to do it but I would be lying if I said I was hopeful. The media is relentless, cruel and dishonest.
Cindy Munford on June 12, 2009 at 2:51 PM
This interview also shows how Palin has started to champion a new cause: women’s rights. This used to be the province of the Left, but over the last twenty years, it’s obvious that the Left cares nothing about women; their take on women’s rights was really about abortion rights. Women are vessels of political expediency.
If the Left doesn’t watch itself–and there’s no reason to think it will–the Republican party could steal this issue away from the Dems, and it won’t be focus group politicization that will be at the heart of this political coup. Palin has earned her stripes and can take up the mantle of women’s rights after the all-out vicious (and at its heart, sexist) attacks from the Left.
The Left’s hypocrisy on women’s issues has emerged like some ghastly CGI monster. And here comes Palin, unafraid of this brash, cowardly creature, and she is deftly putting it down.
She attacks and counter attacks with the heart of someone who isn’t afraid to fight. How refreshing for a Republican. She knows, like Reagan always knew, that the Left is cowardly. What justice for the craven Left to be done in by a women with courage to spare.
EMD on June 12, 2009 at 2:53 PM
Sorry but it’s a ridiculous suggestion. Many Conservatives* are perfectly capable of actually looking at records, deciding what they like and don’t like about candidates and choosing accordingly. It’s not always all about politics though, why is anyone still worrying about the tactics of the left? WE ALREADY KNOW THEY WILL DO ANYTHING TO STOP ANYONE. Sarah Palin has EVERY right to defend her children, it is a non stop attack on her family, it’s sick and it does NOT mean she’s a victim because of it-that’s a total joke. BTW who exactly is promoting her as a victim?

And the amazing thing to me is that as far as I can tell, there isn’t even a DENT anywhere around her! It’s almost as if the media has chased her down in their Prius and tried to ram her Hummer off the road.
Have I mentioned that I love that woman?

I agree with Blake. HotAir’s ignoring Governor Palin’s accomplishment with the pipeline and focusing on the Lecherman scandal makes it more like People magazine.

Dear Republican “Insiders”,
Go ahead – take in a few more chic liberal cocktail parties if you want, but then you owe it to us and yourself to do a big-time gut-check. Do you believe the Dems and the media (birm) just want the Republican party to have a bigger tent, or to have it’s tent collapse? Do you like where America is going with them in charge? Do you not see what is as plain as the nose on your face…
IT’S GOT TO BE SARAH!

It’s not Palin’s so called “victimhood” status that makes her compelling. Victimhood would mean that she responded to all the criticism by whining. Instead, it is her ability to FIGHT without being catty, to FIGHT while remaining calm and classy. That’s why people like me like people like her. Don’t take the lewd and crude jokes sitting down. “Pit bull, meet lipstick.” Yes! She reminds me of those cosmetic ads: “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.” You make conservative women proud, Sarah!

Sarah Palin has certainly got that right.
And she is indeed improving her handling of the media.

Polls, polls, polls. Is that how you gauge everything, sleezza? Wet your finger and hold it to the wind and say, “OK, the wind’s blowing in that direction today, so that must be the right thing.”
Any thinking person would say that Palin kicked Biden’s ass in the debate, and will flatten Obama if given the chance. He is all style and no substance (and not really big on style, either). This clip of Palin proves that she thinks on her feet and doesn’t need a teleprompter like your messiah.

Palin’s interview with Blitzer airing now. She’s doing even better. Discussing the pipeline — just started so not sure if he’ll go into the other issue.

redwhiteblue on June 12, 2009 at 4:34 PM
Next he goes to the stimulus money and how she didn’t want to take some but Alaska is taking it anyway. Get the video—she hits it out of the park again, cites SC being taken to court and judiciary ordering the state to take funds. She says that’s an odd mingling of the branches plus notes the fat strings attached to the funds. She’s asked about Obama and slams his out-of-control spending. Praises his talk about reining in spending and encourages him to follow through.
No Letterman mention, at least not yet.
KittyLowrey on June 12, 2009 at 4:35 PM
He asks about her recent statement where she warned Obama’s reach could extend to control in states. She’s explaining what she said and why.
KittyLowrey on June 12, 2009 at 4:37 PM
Aha, Blitzer goes to break and says when they come back after the break part two she addresses David Letterman issue (this is pre-taped, and will air again in a couple hours, btw).

Back from break he asks her what she thought of Obama’s speech in Cairo. She would have liked to have seen a little more passion in the arena of pro-Israel sentiments.
She is doing a fantastic job in this interview. He asks her if the country is safer now under him, she says weaker when missile defense cut.

budorob on June 12, 2009 at 4:45 PM
Obama has thin skin…her repetitioins about “signs of weakness” will draw a response from him, I predict.
Blitzer asking about Letterman. I think her tack about taking the issue and not just focusing on her self (though she addresses it in a way to show the absurdity of Letterman’s later explanation) but to draw on the larger issue of the degrading of our culture.
Brava, Sarah Palin.
KittyLowrey on June 12, 2009 at 4:45 PM
Blitzer does not dwell on it and moves on to “will you seek re-election”. Her focus is doing her job and raising her family.
No decision that she wants to announce today.
Wolf ends wishing her luck! (I know, often pro forma but not always extended to some of our R politicians).
OK, I hope Hot Air puts the video of this interview up when it’s available.

The most disgusting part of the whole Letterman debacle was the audience laughing at the ‘jokes’. That’s a pretty serious indictment of American culture right there. What the hell has happened to people that they even laughed at his sick self? The next sound should have been an entire audience booing him and walking en masse out the door.
What does this say about America?

As I was watching the video, I was thinking that Palin had achieved the tipping point on this issue and that the attacks on her and her family will significantly decrease or end. Then I read your comment, which concurs with my observation.
Sarah handled this beautifully in that she did not make it about her, but made the focus of the subject young women in our country. We may look back at this episode as a moment when a bit of our civil culture was restored.

It was an extraordinary interview where Sarah did:
1) Touted the Exxon/TC deal to help America depend less on foreigners,
2) Promote jobs,
3) Accent her leadership skills,
4) Connect with mothers who have their minor daughters attacked,
5) alerted the MSM of the terrible double-standard,
6) Came across as human but strong.
She is fighting back and now WE are fighting for her.
This is the type of grassroots reaction we need to push other people to not attack her.

I cover Sarah Palin and have barely even mentioned Letterman. I think all I did was provide a “related” link (absent my own commentary) to Michelle Malkin’s piece “Dear David Letterman”. I don’t think Levi Johnston is mentioned anywhere on my blog other than maybe one reference during the campaign. Suffice it to say, I ignore it for the most part and focus on her accomplishments.
Having said that, I do believe you underestimate the fact that the people are growing weary of these attacks. Letterman is now seen by most people as the ugly one in this while Palin has maintained that this is not about her but about what it does to all young girls. Meanwhile, even NOW has come out against Letterman. I mean, that’s huge.
So, while I will continue to largely ignore things like this (I only offered the clip about the “future of the GOP” on my blog), we should watch and see if more liberals don’t start putting their money where their mouth is on this. There is such a thing as a principled liberal. (They’re out there, believe me, but don’t get as much exposure.) Let the principled liberals defend her against the outrageous stuff. That’s the only way it will ever get any better, I think.

XWing5 on June 12, 2009 at 6:13 PM
You know, I kinda wonder if it was planned, to steal her limelight. She had said she would be making a major announcement on AGIA. Was the headline-making comment made intentionally to draw focus away from that? Was Letterman doing the Dems a favor, intentionally, by planning to be outrageous? I wonder.
Then again, I wonder if the major news outlets would have been eager to have her on regarding AGIA? So maybe even if it was intentional, it may have backfired.
This is total speculation on my part, of course, so take it with a huge sack of salt.

I actually thought Lauer treated her fairly and almost even graciously. Truly. I thought he handled it well. It would have been unfair to the “other side” for him not to have stated what Letterman’s argument is…….and Lauer even admitted that he agreed with Palin that it was a totally unacceptable comment. What more do you want? I’m a Palin supporter and I think Lauer did a great job.

I understand this. But I also think the media will attempt to do so regardless.
Sarah talks to the people. She has time to improve. Every opportunity,, this included,, is a chance to gain more experience to handle what awaits her. I actually think she is smarter than we have even seen. Sarah, because she is genuine, carries the ability to recover from mistakes and gaffs. She speaks with authority and from the heart. It is real.
Unlike a liar, a thief and a fake,, she doesn’t have to worry about trying to remember the lines from the script,,, she only has to open her mouth and basic truths will flow from her heart. And the people, who hunger for a little truth will sit up. Because, as for all true conservatives, when they stumble, the heart is where liberty, freedom, and love for God, for family and for the nation reside. Obama, the Democrat party and RINOS all must hide who they really are. Sarah Palin, and those like her, do not.

Ed -
Where is Sarah’s interview with Wolf Blitzer of CNN today?Wolf focused on the policy issues and Sarah scored some good points against Obamessiah.
Also the Palin vs. Letterman controversy is becoming a rallying cry for women. A key demo that Palin will need in 2012. Check out Drudge Report for his take on this story.

I love how she keeps cutting him off when he wants to put words in her mouth. Good job – stand up to these thugs, Sarah!!!
Gawd, I love that woman!!! So very, very wise.

Wow. I am shocked. Sarah Palin did a great job. She might just win me back in 2012.
The best part was when she pointed out that Letterman couldn’t have possibly be talking about Bristol, because she wasn’t at the game.

Yahoo never disappoints me. They always find away to confirm my perception of their liberal bias.

Come on, Ed, aren’t you a journalist? How about our side airs out the closets of some of the members of this right-wing-hating, ‘usual suspects’ Greek chorus and let them play defense for awhile?

gocatholic,
Lauer is a chump and did a crap job. What more do I want, you ask? I want you to re-listen to 7:00, where Lauer attempts to trap Palin by attacking her own statement about not wanting her minor child to go anywhere near Letterman.
Lauer is clearly trying to stick up for Letterman, if not his specific “jokes.”

Look at her interviews BEFORE she was selected by McCain. She was always good. Impressive, assertive and knowledgeable. That was before the MSM attempt to take her apart and remake her as a ditzy Tina Fey clone.
She is on her own now and can use her natural born political instincts. We should not under estimate her potential.

Quayle was right about Murphy Brown, you know.
But then, you haven’t cared much for facts before, so why start now?
