Video: 85-year-old former President jumps out of a perfectly good plane

posted at 6:22 pm on June 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Thankfully, no one has suggested this for my birthday. It’s hard enough to get me onto a plane in the first place; I’m not likely to jump out of one unless I’m completely out of options, parachute and wingman or not. However, former President and World War II pilot George H. W. Bush celebrated his birthday with a short plane ride up and an even shorter flight back down:

Happy Birthday, Mr. President. We’re impressed.

It is impressive

On a related note, the entire 173rd jumped AT NIGHT in northern Irag during that 3-week war, and the media almost entirely avoided mentioning it.

Jumping out of a perfectly good airplane at night in combat….

Bush subsequently returned to San Jacinto in November 1944 and participated in operations in the Philippines until his squadron was replaced and sent home to the United States. Through 1944, he flew 58 combat missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, and the Presidential Unit Citation awarded to San Jacinto.

A man called into the Mark Davis show (WBAP/DFW area) this AM and told a story about the airport he was at getting shut down while Billy Jeff flew in to attend a funeral of a cousin. It was a funny story and ended with the man saying he was kind of inconvenienced by the whole thing but actually felt like kissing Billy Jeff on the mouth and telling him how much he missed him. A shot at Obama that had Mark Davis convulsing in laughter.

Well, I didn’t actually hate Clinton, voted for him in ’96. Never could get into the Dole/Kemp camp. I detested his morals, but he was truly a pragmatist, unlike the one currently holding the title of POTUS that the media is trying to sell as one. It wasn’t until he left office that I actually realized what a mistake that vote was.

Sue on June 12, 2009 at 7:44 PM

You know, I didn’t vote for Bush 41 or the first time for Bush 42 (no I didn’t NOT vote for Gore) and I don’t agree with much of their liberal policies, but THAT is ONE CLASSY FAMILY! The comparison between the nuevo hillbillies in the White House now and the Bush clan is striking to me.

I attended a funeral this morning for a 96 yr. old lady. The night she passed away she was joking with the priest as he was giving last rites, then told him she just needed to go to sleep now. Wow! What a way to go. I’m thinking President Bush ’41 is just that strong, as is his son, George.

We’ve been so fortunate, and always more critical than we need to have been at times. I think they understand that is our nature, and American politics. Sadly, when they were being drawn and quartered by the media, it’s a shame more of us didn’t speak up.

Wishing the entire Bush family the joy of sharing many more birthdays with their adventurous icon. God bless him and them.

It’s hard enough to get me onto a plane in the first place; I’m not likely to jump out of one unless I’m completely out of options, parachute and wingman or not

Well sir, after you experience my last air trip you might change your tune. Flying from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Reagan National last week there was “weather” over DC. We went into a hold pattern for a while before the decision was made to divert the flight to Dulles. The plane made two (as in close to landing) attempts to land at Dulles before the flight was diverted to Baltimore. After hanging out on the tarmac for some time and being informed it would be at least midnight before we could be refueled for that thirty mile trip to Reagan National, the decision was made to get the plane to a terminal gate. We were then delayed by an outbound plane’s problem with its tow bar which blocked our approach and was cleared just in time for the ramp to be closed because of lightning 15 feet shy of getting to the gate. 45 minutes later the plane was at its gate and we were informed the plane would not be going further that night and we could pick up our luggage and get further information in the terminal.

My luggage was not on the plane. The airline couldn’t find a bus so they were putting all the passengers six-to-a-van into taxis to get us down to Reagan National. Thankfully, the parking area was still open and I was able to get my car and get home and have a whole three hours of “rest” before I had to get up for work.

If at some point I had been given the option to jump out with a parachute, I would have done it!

I envy 96-year-olds with that level of cognizance. They know they will pass over soon and are comfortable, even happy, with that fact. They have come to terms with their own passing, in part because they have seen so many go before them and can make it easier for those they leave behind. My personal hope is to be aware and fully cognizant until the end and pass over as a result of old-age not some disease.

As to the Bush Family- what a class act these people are. They live their lives as they would without the media showing up to record these events. I have no doubt that GHWB would have jumped from that plane today with or without the media attention. They are who they are and don’t need to affirm themselves through popularity polls.

I sympathize but in the historical context few of our Presidents have worn the cloth of our nation in the military. In 2009 very few in Congress were ever in the military. Which means all those in the military are still being screwed over by Congress who doesn’t understand the sacrifices of the military family.

I was fortunate enough to be in the room when he visited a wounded marine in a hospital one time…this was when he was having his heart issues. The marine was missing both legs, part of a few fingers, an eye, and shrapnel wounds on his torso. After talking to the marine, President Bush said “Hang in there son.” The marine replied “No, sir. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.

Ed, my daughter made her tandem skydive the day before her 17th birthday. If that little girl can do it, surely you can summon the courage to try, just once.
Of course, she had the benefit of knowing how much joy skydiving has brought to her dad’s life. Without that example she may never have thought of it.
I’ve never done a tandem myself. Frankly it would scare the crap out of me to not have my own parachute on my back while we are climbing to altitude. It’s the only thing that gets me over my intense fear of heights.
