Smart Power: Obama’s Uighur deal undermines Bermuda government

posted at 5:05 pm on June 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Perhaps the Bermuda parliament is “fear-gripped”, too — or maybe just angry that their Premier cut a deal to admit al-Qaeda trained Uighur separatists into their country without consulting them or the British.  Bermuda’s House of Assembly scheduled a no-confidence vote against Ewart Brown, which would result in immediate elections and throw the Bermuda government in disarray:

The United Bermuda Party today moved for a motion of no confidence against the Government led by Premier Ewart Brown.

Opposition leader Kim Swan proposed the motion in the House of Assembly this morning.

He said it was necessary as the Island is “increasingly subject to the politics of one man rule”.

Said Mr. Swan: “Why have we moved a motion of no confidence? The public affairs of Bermuda are increasingly subject to the politics of one man rule under the Premier, Dr. Ewart Brown. We consider this unhealthy and not in Bermuda’s best interest.

Brown never bothered to consult with the British Foreign Office or the Governor, which created an angry exchange today.  The Obama administration attempted to shove blame onto Brown, claiming the White House assumed Brown was handling the Brits:

British Press were interpreting the statement as a signal that the FCO was “incensed” by the move. The Times Online described the FCO response as “ill-disguised fury”.

In a sign of the sensitivity of the issue, the State Department said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed the matter with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband yesterday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a State Department official said Washington negotiated the release of the four Uighurs directly with Bermuda Government on the understanding it was consulting the Governor.

The State Department is outsourcing its diplomacy to Bermuda?  Sorry, that explanation doesn’t fly.  The State Department knows full well that the UK controls the foreign policy of Bermuda and has responsibility for its security. The Obama administration should have checked to make sure our closest ally knew about the negotiations in order to avoid precisely what happened this week.

Premier Brown called the transfer an “immigration issue,” a claim that will likely inflame opinion even more on Bermuda and the UK.  The political fallout may wind up undermining the British government as well:

William Hague, the shadow foreign secretary, demanded an explanation from Foreign Secretary David Miliband and said the (British) government appeared to have “lost grip of running the country” amid internal Labour party rows over Gordon Brown’s future.

“It is astonishing that an agreement of such significance … could have taken place without a ripple reaching Whitehall,” Hague said. “The UK is responsible for Bermuda’s external relations, defence and security and for appointing its governor. Yet the FCO [Foreign and Commonwealth Office] appears to have had no idea that these discussions were taking place.

“Even before this there were serious questions about whether the government has paid sufficient attention to UK overseas territories. These questions have reached a new level.”

I seem to recall Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both claiming that they could restore supposedly strained relationships with our allies.  They’re doing a bang-up job of it thus far.

As long as we’re the land of “change,” let’s, too, have “motions of no confidence.” For the same reason.

So did these four guys actually get to Bermuda? Are they there now? Did they actually get released from Gitmo? If they didn’t get to Bermuda where did they go? Or are they still confined at Gitmo?

Man, I don’t know about the state of news reporting lately, ‘cuz it seems we only get half the story, and everything is left unanswered at the end.

Or are these news stories just news accounts of what might happen in the future, maybe, if everyone agrees, unless something happens which will mean that it won’t happen after all and something else will happen instead.

How in the name of all that is sane do you send terrorists to an allied nation’s protectorate and not have this completely worked out in advance ? Not only didn’t they get sent to a prison’s deepest darkest hole, they got homes and jobs.

What did Teh Mess-I-Yah do……. Grab a UK phone book and randomly dial someone in South Yorkshire and say “Hey, we’re sending Bermuda some displaced man-made-incident causing people. Let 10 Downing know, ok ?”

What a joke……. Thing is, this ‘joke’ is going to get millions killed.

….and 78% of “my people” voted for this……. I hope they’re all happy now.

I would think that Obama would have taken the opportunity to thank Gordon Brown for helping him out, unless of course, Obama thought it best not to bring the subject up.

As a Brit I find the whole Bermuda thing embarrassing – we don’t exactly have an Empire any more.

On the other hand, British taxpayers will have to pay the price of policing these terrorists. I’ve even heard they want to get citizenry of Bermuda too, which would probably make them eligible to enter the UK freely.

I think its safe to say that Obama does not much like us Brits. I guess we can live with that. We don’t really have much the offer the US like the Chinese or Indians can, these days. On the other hand, when the chips are down and Obama is looking for an ally he can trust, he might find the room deserted.

Who’s he going to wind up next? The Aussies?

This is good, from across the pond.

A snippet:

The British government is worried not only about the offence to its dignity – and it does seem odd that it did not get wind of this plan.

After all, it is supposed to be in a “special relationship” with the US government.

But perhaps the new administration has not yet caught up on the niceties of what powers the mother country retains over these “overseas territories”. It is security, defence and foreign policy, if they ever ask.

London is also concerned about the effect on China, which has demanded the return of these Uighurs, whom it regards as dangerous “separatists” for supporting a Muslim state of East Turkestan in western China.

British diplomats in Beijing face quite a delicate mission in trying to explain what has happened.

This is following the typical Obama Pattern:

Step 1: Make a stupid committment to outflank your opposition. For example, “I’ll talk with Iran without preconditions”, or “I will release or try all Gitmo detainees”

Step 2: Refuse to temporize on the stupid committment when given the opportunity, but rather pretend that the stupid committment is the very epitome of wisdom and good policy.

Step 3: Do whatever damage to the country that is necessary to make the stupid committment a reality. The interests of making Barack Obama look good are far more important than the interests of the United States.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

The political fallout may wind up undermining the British government as well:

LOL. Ed Morrisey really has gotten more deranged since Obama took over. Now he’s seriously trying to claim that the U.S. government handing over terror inmates to Bermuda is going to inflame the opinion of the average British citizen. What a joke.

Why Bermuda anyway? Shouldn’t these “detainees” be sent to China?

I found this article from February 24 explaining the Uighur’s at Guantanamo.

“President Obama has made closing the camp a priority, and federal courts have so far ruled that the Uighur detainees present no threat to the United States.

But freed to where? China is insisting that the Uighurs be sent home to face trial for separatist activities. It has further intimated that any country that offers them political asylum will in effect be harboring dangerous terrorists.

“On the issue of the Chinese terrorist suspects detained in Guantanamo, we have repeatedly stated that we oppose any country receiving these people,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said this month.”

I don’t see why sending them to China is a problem.

As he is so fond of always referring to Lincoln,How about this Section 12 of a proclamation written by Lincoln July 25,1862 “That the President of the United States is hereby authorized to make transportation, colonization, and settlement, in some tropical country beyond the limits of the United States, of such persons of African race, made free by the provisions of this act, as many as may be willing to emigrate ,HAVING FIRST OBTAINED THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNMENT OF SAID COUNTRY, to their protection and settlement within the same, with all rights and privilrges of freemen”. My only point being they couldn’t get other countries to accept them either and not comparing slaves to terrorists but the fact some Presidents want to clean up messes by foisting it on some other country. I say keep them in Gitmo it sure is a lot cheaper than paying some other country 12Million a head.

Wrong. Americans do not want the detainees relocated here. It’s because of citizen and congressional opposition that Barry is looking for other solutions. I would imagine the fact that Britain, our great friend and ally, refused to accept detainees, would indicate that British citizens feel much the same. If Barry had relocated the Uighers to Puerto Rico, he would have faced a firestorm of criticism in the U.S. Sending them to Bermuda is likely to create the same reaction in Great Britain.

Further, Gordon Brown is on very shaky ground these days. While, under normal circumstances, this issue would probably not result in a shakeup, in today’s climate it could provide the tipping point.

Obama, et al., used the “but China will harm them” (otherwise, the “human rights”) complaint to deter sending them (back) to China. That’s the same “human rights” complaint they use to fund more murders of the unborn, worldwide.

The priorities of Democrats are, indeed, entirely skewered, their attempts at reason, irrational.

Obama pulled a fast one, doing a purposeful end run around the Brits. He’s quickly throwing mud in the face of every friend we have while cozying up to dictators and despots.

If Barry had relocated the Uighers to Puerto Rico, he would have faced a firestorm of criticism in the U.S. Sending them to Bermuda is likely to create the same reaction in Great Britain. — Dee2008 on June 12, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Bermuda’s gonna be pushing the Uighers to leave “to travel anywhere else they want to” pretty darn quickly once Bermuda realizes no one from nearly anywhere will want to be travelling to Bermuda, at least those of us globally who aren’t Muslim. Watch what will happen to Bermuda very, very quickly, a slide downhill like no other.

I hear you Lourdes but as I understand we have offered some of the detained terrorists at Guantanamo to Yemen and other home ports but they don’t want them.

China does want their separatists.

Well, I wonder if the Bermudan Premier gets replaced, will they force these guys back to Gitmo? I can’t imagine anyone in the world being comfortable that they can be naturalized. Wouldn’t that make them British citizens?
