Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on June 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Yesterday, the Obama administration and the State Department committed a gobsmackingly amateurish blunder by failing to consult the British before dumping four Uighurs from Gitmo onto Bermuda — which the British have to secure. But Obama himself committed another amateurish blunder with another ally by releasing a photo of himself talking on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu … and sending a regional insult along with it:
After the shoe-throwing incident in Baghdad last year with George Bush, can any American say they’re not familiar with the regional insult of showing one’s soles to another person? Even without the explicitly insult of the soles of his shoes, it certainly doesn’t look like Obama is working very hard on this phone call with Bibi, anyway. Did Bush ever release a photo of himself talking on the phone with any world leader with his shoes up on the desk, instead of a more engaged — and professional — image?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Considering this man’s early education and family members on his father’s side, he knew exactly what he was doing.

It just continues to demonstrate the man’s scorn for everything American and respect for our allies.

I wonder why Bermuda agreed without first consulting with Britain. I haven’t seen any mention of that. I’m wondering how they were threatened. Offshore banking?? Insurance fraud??

Add my name to the list, this was no accident. It was The Obama ‘being cool’. Remember all those times in the campaign debates where The Obama had to scratch an itch with the finger?
Rush was the first guy to say it publicly, but I’ve long held the belief that this guy and his wife has an in your face chip on his shoulder that is gonna be trouble before this is all over with.

Do we know which desk Obama chose to use in the Oval Office? I’m just curious to know which of our priceless historical antiques this pathetic fraud is using as his footrest.
As for the insult to Israel, that’s just business-as-usual for this no-class fool.
AZCoyote on June 12, 2009 at 8:22 AM
The Uighurs to Bermuda thing would have been enough. This silly shoe stuff is just, well, silly.
We conservatives don’t like over-sensitivity, remember? Personally, I’ll put my feet on my desk any damned time I want to.

I can’t stand what Big Guy is doing to our country, but if he can’t put his feet up on the desk without worrying about whether he’s insulting islam, then it’s a pretty sad state of affairs. Ed, you & your boss are among the biggest critics of the oversensitivity islamic apologists, so I’m surprised you would call this one an Obamateurism.
KS Rex on June 12, 2009 at 8:27 AM
Cut him some slack.
After Clinton, a Democrat President has to go out of his way to show he is not receiving fellatio while on the phone about life-and-death matters.
Leave it to Democrats to disgrace the Oval Office.

But the oval office isn’t the same as hanging out at home watching a football game. That desk and that house belongs to all of us, and President Obama is the temporary tenant. It doesn’t belong to him. Also, he knew he was being photographed, so he chose to show his nonchalant, disinterested attitude–he’s an exhibitionist as well as a narcissist.
I can just imagine the thugs and criminals he allows to parade through the WH. I wonder who else he has allowed to sit at his desk. It makes me wanna vomit.

If I’m not mistaken, the Obamateurism of the Day report is in response to Slate magazine’s similar reports about George Bush, which they continued to run even after he left office. I think this is a case of turnabout being fair play– if Slate can squeeze column inches out of W’s clumsy grammar and pronunciation, HA can do the same out of Obama’s clumsy foreign relations, economic knowledge, and lack of executive experience.

You’re missing the point. No one mentioned insulting Islam.
This is an insult in that part of the world, which includes Israel. He was talking to the pm of Israel. This wasn’t some candid shot.
Most of these oval office type photographs are carefully staged, no matter who is the president. This was the one picture selected to be released.
reaganaut on June 12, 2009 at 8:33 AM
Problem is, it’s NOT his desk that he has his feet on. The desk belongs to the people of the United States of America, just like the house Barry currently occupies. And it’s not just any desk. It’s an ornately carved antique built from timbers of the British ship Resolute, and given by Queen Victoria in 1880 to President Rutherford B. Hayes.
You want to treat your own furniture like crap, go right ahead. But neither you nor Barry has the right to treat the nation’s historical antiques with such disrespect.

As much as I dislike the Prevaricator-in-Chief, this is much ado about nothing. While he is amateurish and naive, ill-suited to the job and a little too aloof, this was nothing more than a “faux pas”, not an intended insult. If the photographer had taken the shot from the side, would we be having this conversation? Did Obumble have the soles of his feet pointing toward Israel? On another blog they were going nuts because his feet were on The Resolute Desk, a precious antique. Then someone else posted a link to a picture of GWB with his feet on the desk and no one backed off but attacked the person who posted the link.
Obumble and Biden have provided us with plenty of gaffe-tastic moments already. This isn’t one of them.

So then he gets a free shot off for the price of the digital camera file’s pixels and all you can do is find an excuse to gripe about the way he treats the most democratic country in the Mideast, who has been a US allie for the duration of the country’s existance?!
You guys must all be Jews!

It’s the death of a thousand cuts, taken straight from the Dem. playbook. The very accusation and publicity about Obama disrespecting his office is harmful to him, as they were fatal to GWB. The truth of the individual charge mattered little to the effect.
For my survival, Obama must lose the next election. The ends justify the means. We’re losing.

I’ve been saying this for quite a while. People keep assuming the lack of proper reception for Brown, the DVDs, iPod, failure to bow, hugging the queen, etc. are all evidence of their stupidity. It’s not. It’s evidence of their antipathy. The Obamas hate the USA and they REALLY HATE the UK. They insult the UK at every opportunity. And their insults have the maturity of a 5th grader.

Insulted enough, they can be the first to turn on him, and destroy his reputation among those stupid, fawning Eurosocialists, and then our own stupid, fawning Amersocialists. I even hope the UK media takes on the US media.
btw, I hear Obama said that the Queen was a dyke, and that her husband was the real queen. Will look for the link.

Good point Coyote. If he wants respect, he should act respectfully toward us, the Brits who gave us the desk, the history of the piece, and the leader he’s speaking with on the phone. I’ll remember this the next time some liberal complains about people calling him “Barry” or “BO” instead of “President Obama”.

With all of these Obamateurisms, I miss the Gipper all the more, especially on this 22nd anniversary of a Great Moment in History.
jgapinoy on June 12, 2009 at 9:16 AM
Unlike some of the “amateur-isms” posted in this space, these two really _are_ the product of those unprepared for national leadership. Never mind the shoe insult; the photo of Obama with his feet on the desk is shockingly unprofessional, and anyone with a minute of real executive experience would have realized it. You simply don’t portray leaders that way while on the job, political or corporate.
However, the placing of Gitmo detainees in Bermuda without consulting the British Foreign Office is unbelievably stupid. I’m not a genius like our scholar-President, but even _I_ know that Bermuda is a British territory. This is “Africa is a country”-type stupid, except for real. Inexcusable.

I understand that in diplomacy (especially when dealing with the Middle East) that a perceived slight is often worse than a real one. However, I think if anyone is to blame, it is the White House photographer and press office for this publicly shot. Of course, its not like any Democrat since Truman has taken that office seriously, anyways…
Wasn’t it Clinton who had Lewinsky under the desk when talking to world leaders? So with the the idiotic crap that 0bama does, this is a minor issue.

ladyingray on June 12, 2009 at 9:36 AM
There are no surprises here. We should not be surprised in the future, no matter how obtuse the incident. The American electorate placed into the office of POTUS a person who has no sense of office, class nor representation.
Obama does not see himself as representing us. He represents himself. It IS that simple.
The degree of narcissism that Obama suffers from is beyond anything we have seen in that office in memorable history. Expect more of the same and you will not be disappointed. He has nothing more to offer than that which we have already experienced.

Three things…First, if I were President, I’d like to think I’d have more respect for the dignity of the office than to go around putting my feet up on desks. Second, if I did, I certainly wouldn’t let anyone take pictures. Third, I would not let such a slob-like picture be associated with a conversation I had with a world leader.
But, I was never a community organizer, so what do I know?
ynot4tony2 on June 12, 2009 at 10:27 AM
The picture of Obama with his feet up on the desk, speaking with Israeli PM Netanyahu, really ticked me off.
First is Obama’s lack of respect for the American people. He’s working in The People’s House, not his own office. His casual disregard for decorum and professionalism is another example of Obama’s arrogance and narcissism. I don’t recall any other president treating the White House so unprofessionally, at least publicly, showing off about it and being proud of himself for doing so. Does anyone?
Second, Obama’s behavior is a symbolic insult to all Israeli’s, not just Netanyahu, as well as Israel supporters. It’s like his middle finger on his nose treatment of Hillary. His fawning media give him just enough plausible deniability to get away with it, but it’s there for all to see. And this behavior is from a supposed great intellect who is knowledgeable and sensitive to the cultures of the region. So, either Obama knew the symbolism of what he was doing and is intentionally insulting, or Obama didn’t know the symbolism and he could care less what any unimportant people think of his behavior because he knows the media will cover for him.
Loxodonta on June 12, 2009 at 10:32 AM
It is not possible to go through gradeschool in Indonesia and NOT know this. That’s an even bigger deal there than it is in the Middle East. Barak Hussein Obama learned this before he learned how to read and write.
This is like somebody raised in America flipping the middle finger, and not just in that “Oops, I had to scratch my nose again” way that Obama usually does it. This photo is the equivalent of squatting down, taking both fingers and ramming them up as hard as you can.

The thing with the soles of the shoes is the very first thing they tell you when you go to a Muslim country. The very first thing. Obama just came back from a trip to the Middle East, and surely must be familiar with this cultural taboo. It is simply not possible for him to make a mistake like this, unless he is a complete and utter moron and narcissist.
