Obama cronyism: Going after AmeriCorps IG on behalf of contributor; Update: A Michelle Obama connection?
posted at 8:47 am on June 12, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
David Freddoso tried to explain that the only change Barack Obama would bring to the Beltway would be an introduction of the Chicago Machine politics that made him successful to the Beltway. The Inspector General of AmeriCorps, one of Obama’s pet projects, has discovered this the hard way. The independent investigator got fired for peeking too closely at an Obama contributor:
President Barack Obama says he has lost confidence in the inspector general who investigates AmeriCorps and other national service programs and has told Congress he is removing him from the position.
Obama’s move follows an investigation by IG Gerald Walpin of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, who is an Obama supporter and former NBA basketball star, into the misuse of federal grants by a nonprofit education group that Johnson headed.
Walpin was criticized by the acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento for the way he handled an investigation of Johnson and St. HOPE Academy, a nonprofit group that received hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants from the Corporation for National Community Service. The corporation runs the AmeriCorps program.
Initially, the White House called Walpin and told him he had an hour to resign or get fired, as Byron York reported. Senator Charles Grassley shot back a warning to the White House last night:
After last night’s call, Walpin got in touch with Congress, and it appears the White House has backed off, at least for now. This afternoon, Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, who is something of a guardian angel for inspectors general, fired off a letter to the White House about the affair.
“I was troubled to learn that last night your staff reportedly issued an ultimatum to the AmeriCorps Inspector General Gerald Walpin that he had one hour to resign or be terminated,” Grassley wrote. “As you know, Inspectors General were created by Congress as a means to combat waste, fraud, and abuse and to be independent watchdogs ensuring that federal agencies were held accountable for their actions. Inspectors General were designed to have a dual role reporting to both the President and Congress so that they would be free from undue political pressure. This independence is the hallmark of all Inspectors General and is essential so they may operate independently, without political pressure or interference from agencies attempting to keep their failings from public scrutiny.”
Grassley said he was “deeply troubled” by the Walpin matter and closed by asking the president “to review the Inspector General Reform Act you cosponsored and to follow the letter of the law should you have cause to remove any Inspector General.”
In fact, regardless of the commentary from the US Attorney, Congress gave IGs this level of protection precisely to avoid this kind of action by the White House. Obama doesn’t want IGs investigating his cronies and political allies, and the evidence for this is rather clear from the way the White House handled it. Instead of going to Congress, which the lawyers in the White House should have known was the correct procedure, they attempted to intimidate Walpin out of his job first. Apparently they didn’t have a good enough case for the proper procedure.
Gee, does that sound (cough-cough Chrysler) at all (cough-cough GM) familiar (cough-cough AIG)? It’s more of the madman theory of the Presidency — and once again, it involves abuse of power.
Will Congress stand up to the executive branch and protect the Inspectors General? Or will they roll over and allow Obama to accrue even more power to protect his buddies and to allow corruption to run rampant?
Update: The boss has much more on this, including a connection to the other Michelle
First Lady Michelle Obama’s chief of staff, Jackie Norris, is being sent to the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) in what is both a White House shake-up and an indication of the first lady’s sway over the corporation that oversees AmeriCorps, Serve and Learn and the Senior Corps.
Observers believe Norris, whom Obama came to know early in the Iowa caucus campaign, was forced out of the White House so that long-time Obama friend Susan Sher could take over. But those same observers see her appointment as senior adviser to the corporation as an overall win for CNCS, believing that Norris still will have a straight line to the White House.
CNCS remains without a CEO after the withdrawal last month of Nike vice president Maria Eitel, even before her nomination went to the Senate. Although the corporation’s CEO must be nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate, Michelle Obama reportedly has taken the lead in selecting the nominee.
And in Youth Today, a hint of what may really have triggered the IG’s termination:
The inspector general (IG) of the Corporation for National and Community Service is being removed by President Barack Obama, a week after the IG questioned the eligibility of the largest and most expensive AmeriCorps program, and while the IG was contesting the “propriety” of a settlement made with a mayor for alleged misuse of AmeriCorps funds.
…Funding for the largest AmeriCorps program – the Teaching Fellows Program, run by the Research Foundation of the City University of New York – is in abeyance pending resolution of widespread problems identified in a recent audit. Although Walpin recommended that funding be curtailed and that previous funds (perhaps as much as $75 million) be repaid to the corporation, the corporation has said it will take no action on that matter.
Walpin concluded that nothing was being gained by the grants to CUNY and that the money was simply being used to subsidize an existing and funded program.
The boss says this looks a lot like Travelgate. When will the show trial of Walpin start, so that the Obamas can take political cover?
Update II: Don’t forget the RAT in the stimulus.

True, but that is a type of American Idol number. What matters is that Obama’s idol-type persona does not rub off – it had no coat tails, as can be seen by the low numbers for his policies and for the Dem congress. The GOP should not be intimidated by those numbers as they will only matter in 2012.

And, I mean, who even would like him personally? My eyes and ears bleed from his posturing, monotone droning and elitist drivel. Plus, he IS NOT AN UBER-INTELLECTUAL. I can’t stand posers…a real intellect doesn’t have to flaunt it or be a lord-over. I think he is a persuasive thug, honestly. Most kids at school hated the bully but he was cool because he dressed nice and was involved in everything, but, we only sucked up and flattered him because of insecurity…not because we generally liked him. If we could, we would have taken the jerk down a notch, you know? If this whole thing weren’t so dangerous for our nation, it would be a profoundly intriguing psychological/sociological exercise on a grand scale.

Is this jerk aware of the fact that this ISN’T Kenya, that the Constitution gives us the tools to protect ourselves from tyrants? The time is rapidly approaching. He is losing support in his own ranks. Not all Democrats support fascism.

These ‘enlightened voters’ got exactly what they wanted. They do not know how to do anything on their own, or accept responsibility for themselves. With them, it is always somebody else’s fault. They will most definitely vote for a continuation of the Obama administration in 2010 and 2012, because they are too scared by the real world to want to leave their nanny. They need someone to tell them what to do, because they have lost all sense of judgment, of common sense, of proportion – and do not even know of their deficiency.
That’s exactly why they are so eagerly joining the health care debate. Congress is preparing to mandate that every man, woman, and child in the US will have to buy their product. Using their influence now, the insurance companies can structure how their products will be sold. They will not have to compete with the government; they will be guaranteed by the government. And health care will still be rationed.
ss396 on June 12, 2009 at 9:50 AM
They’d have to amend the Constitution, and such an amendment would never be approved by enough states.
They have *political* power right now under the Constitution, but the states and the military would never abide the cancellation of an election.

Obama is a great leader who is trying heal our nation after the nightmare of the last 8 years. He is a brilliant law scholar who believes in the Constitution. If the Inspector General was being dishonest, and was engaged in illegal actions, then he must be stricken. Lord Obama is the law giver. We put our faith in Obama to make the right decisions for us and AmeriCorps. Questioning The One is heresy.

Would-be dictators have to have military support, or get enough power to convince the military to back them. I don’t see that happening here.
But by all means, let’s be vigilant.

Gee, does it sound like, (cough, cough Mussolini), or maybe, (cough, cough Stalin)?
I am with Mommypundit when it comes to when we get in power we are going to have to have someone who is willing to take a baseball bat to everything this Administration has built up. No linguini spined moderate can be put up by the GOP. This is true for the Congressional elections in 2010. We are going to desperately need kung-fu fighters to the max!
For me this just demonstrates anyone and everyone who does not bow will get axed. This is a huge indicator as to why he wanted to create the czars. He had to get around Congressional Democrats who would not go along with his demolition plans for America.
Sort of backs up the thoughts from some who believe when J. Wright said “them Jews”, he meant ALL Jews. Even those who go along with Obama are eventually going to be subject to this Administration’s ire and prejudice.

They can’t all be comfortable with this thugish behavior when they have to wonder when the White House is going to put the thumb on one of them.

He’s recycled all the Clinton appointee’s, and now he’s moved on to “young genius’s that he’s heard great things about”. Please.
Whenever they describe all the “cool parties the Obama’s like to throw at taxpayers expense”, they list the celebrities and politicians that attend, because the Obama’s don’t have social friends. Oh wait- I forgot the Ayers, and Jeremiah Wright! (But I guess “Them Jews” don’t allow Wright to attend White House parties…)

Sure, that makes sense.
Johnson must have learned how to be such a great mayor at the same school that taught Obama’s other close friend, Kwame Kilpatrick, how to govern ethically and effectively.

Bending the Constitution or ignoring parts of it is one thing. Canceling an election would be over the top. That would result in mass secession, at the very least.
Am I concerned about what’s happening? Absolutely. I expect a move against churches in the next couple of years–pastors arrested for reading Romans 1 aloud, churches sued for refusing to perform same-sex weddings, Catholic hospitals forced to perform abortions, loss of tax-exempt status for religious organizations that don’t tow the party line, and who knows what else.
But the cancellation of elections would rip the nation apart, literally.

seven on June 12, 2009 at 10:11 AM
I agree with you, but the thing is, I’m just not sure about that anymore. It seems to me that Obama knows the people have very little power and the media would look for ways to portray that act as another bold salvation move from the leader.
pearson on June 12, 2009 at 10:12 AM
I doubt he’ll even have to generate the chaos. I fully expect a terrorist attack this year (God forbid). And I won’t be surprised if martial law is imposed for a while due to an attack, flu epidemic, etc.
But who rules in chaos? The military and law enforcement. And those I know will draw the line at or before dictatorship.
The Dems haven’t used physical violence against their opponents, or even put much effort into silencing their critics. If that changes, or if a conservative SCOTUS justice or two suddenly wind up dead, I’m out of here.

Obama won’t deliberately interfere with the 2010 elections – he will see how they go before deciding on events in 2012. He can afford to lose a few seats in 2010, since he will still hold power.

From Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Ethics:
“The basest contempt for humanity carries on its sinister business under the most holy assertions of love for humanity… The small number of upright people will be smeared with mud. Their courage is called revolt, their discipline Pharisaism, their independence arbitrariness, and their masterfulness arrogance. For the tyrannical despiser of humanity, popularity is a sign of the greatest love for humanity. He hides his secret profound distrust of all people behind the stolen words of true community. While he declares himself before the masses to be one of them, he praises himself with repulsive vanity and despises the rights of every individual. He considers the people stupid; he considers them weak, and they become weak; he considers them criminal, and they become criminal. …In his deep contempt for humanity, the more he seeks the favor of those he despises, the more certainly he arouses the masses to declare him a god.”
This is Bonhoeffer’s description of Hitler, written in 1945. We MUST pay attention.

Obama is ignoring, even encouraging, the growing threat of terrorism which could come from a number of countries. He is paving the way for the next attack on the US. Once that happens, he will have his excuse to seize absolute power.

Jazz Piano, I get the pack mentality thing but it seems more of a herd mentality to me . As in a stampede. They hear a shot and all run in the direction of leader clueless that they are headed off cliff. No one with enough sense to put a stop to it. Also a question don`t the Military take an oath to uphold the Constitution above the Commander? I should know this being a Army Brat but can`t remember precisely.
