Video: Letterman non-apologizes to Palin; Update: McCain scolds Letterman

I had a few long moments of panic after publishing last night’s post when I considered that Entertainment Weekly might have taken him out of context. Surely he didn’t really defend himself by saying he only meant to call Bristol a whore, not Willow. Except … he did, as you’re about to see. No apology, either; the closest we get is an admission that he “probably” regrets having told those jokes — which are duly repeated here in their entirety — but only after admitting that he “kind of likes” the one comparing Palin herself to a “slutty flight attendant.” On some basic level he doesn’t understand what the problem is here (e.g., comparing Spitzer and Alex Rodriguez, each of whom sought fame, to Bristol, who didn’t), and no wonder: Much of the left’s derision towards Palin and her daughter stems from the perception that they’re white trash, a class-oriented smear which Dave naturally figured he could mine for a few safe slut/whore jokes at their expense. Imagine his mystification at suddenly finding out that he can’t. Evidently it’s not just cultured, well educated, progressive girls like the Obama sisters who are off-limits for cheap shots.

Sounds like the ‘Cuda’s done playing nice with him after this. Exit quotation from the governor’s spokesman: “The Palins have no intention of providing a rating’s boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”

Update: A mild rebuke from Maverick, but better than saying nothing at all.

Republican Senator John McCain has a message for late-night comic David Letterman: Enough with the jokes about Sarah Palin and her family…

“I don’t understand why Letterman would say that about a young woman,” McCain said during a telephone interview on Thursday. “They (the Palins) deserve some kind of protection from being the butt of late-night hosts.”

I’m sure you’d be all over it if it was a liberals teen daughter no matter who it was. yeah, yeah, yeah. You’d defend her and be all outraged calling for heads to roll even if it was said by someone you admire, right? Everyone’s decency depends on what side they’re on.

I guess you didn’t read my comment above about Rush and Chelsea Clinton. You just proved my point about your being dumb.

But hey, thanks for playin’!

atheling on June 11, 2009 at 8:43 PM

The point is, Vek old buddy old pal, is that I’m not giving Letterman the benefit of the doubt on any of this. He hasn’t earned it, and he shows no signs of trying.

Jim Treacher on June 11, 2009 at 8:45 PM

I’m not giving him a pass on anything. The flaw in the theory is that facts would matter to Letterman. I’ve never seen evidence of that before.

!!! LOL … I see your point.

But …

I’m going to give him the credit a 62 year old man who’s been doing this for years should have – and that is namely that he did a cursury check of the facts before he opened his mouth. He clearly knew Palin attended the game – clearly knew at least one daughter was there. I’m thinking – well, any idiot would have checked WHICH daughter were there.

Could I be wrong? Yes.

But using the reasonable man standard – and the fact that only Willow was there – I don’t think I can be burned in hell for concluding Dave was talking about Willow.

And if I am wrong then David Letterman is still a heartless bastard for not apologizing profusely for this joke – which he KNOWS now was taken as a pedophilia joke about a 14 year old.

If he’s that stupid – he’s deserves the cake and should eat up.

I skipped over many comments. My apologies atheling. I’m a bit burned out on all the backbiting lately.

I gotta agree with Honda on this. Letterman is 62, and has been in the business for a long time. He should have known what he was talking about before he opened his filthy mouth.

He deserves to be crucified for this.

It’s good that people from both sides of the political aisle are coming to Sarah’s defense. As bad as this all is maybe it will serve as a turning point for Sarah’s image in the mainstream media.

If he’d given a proper apology – which any sane person would do after realizing that he botched the joke in that manner – if he’d done that – he could be given the benefit of the doubt.

Since he didn’t I don’t feel compelled personally to buy his story.

Nuff said.

I’m sure you’d be all over it if it was a liberals teen daughter no matter who it was. yeah, yeah, yeah.

Quit projecting your lack of moral clarity. I have always thought that the children of politicians should be OFF limits. Period. You don’t talk of them, you don’t stick your big nose into their lives, as they did not ask to be in the limelight. Chelsea Clinton deserved the years of relative peace that she had. While I guess you could find people pointing out she was less than pretty, her life was not smeared in any way by anyone in the media, right or left.
You can’t say the same. You attitude is abjectly immoral, and I can’t make this warning strong enough: Pull moral self up by the bootstraps, because there is a culture war coming the likes of which you are not going to understand for this purposeful stupidity.
For those on the left that HAVE been responsible, and there have been a few examples, I thank you. That is what I am talking about. Make that playing field level in the RIGHT way. The Palin family should GET the SAME kidd gloves the Obama girls deservedly have. Period. We will not play it the same way disgusting liberals have. It would be wrong. It might make a point, but it would be reprehensible and wrong.

Spot on and I can’t think of a single joke that’s been made from the Conservative side concerning the Obama girls. Additionally – though Joe Biden’s daughter was caught on video snorting cocaine – she’s been left alone too.

But Willow gets to get raped by A-Rod. Classy move David Letterman.

Boy, you sure are making a lot of assumptions here.

I’m pissed off about the way Sarah Palin has been slammed, period. The vicious, evil, petty, mean-spirited crap. I see Sarah Palin as one of us. When someone hits her, they hit me. Or my sister. Or my mother.

So, if you don’t get it, I don’t know what to say.

atheling on June 11, 2009 at 9:17 PM

I think the only person who really has the moral authority to determine whether David Lettermangoldbergstien gets a pass or not is:

Don Rickles. As vicious as The Don is with his routines, I don’t think even he would cross that line. This shows a distinct difference between an tongue in cheek insult and just being rude. Sarah is fair game. Her children are not. Amy was hands off. Chelsea was hands off (until she threw her hat in the ring), the Bush girls were off limits, until the MSM decided to use them against their father.

I guess that rule is suspended. What say you, Olby? Mathews? Maddow?

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 9:10 PM

Well, there was that Saturday Night Live skit with Republican leaders in a strategy session, ultimately deciding to attack the Obama girls.

Doesn’t that count? Because in the Age of Obama, where liberal fantasies are reality, SNL skits really happened.

malclave on June 11, 2009 at 9:30 PM

As I already posted, other politicians that had the guts to talk to Letterman face to face after he joked about them helped themselves a great deal.

Moesart on June 11, 2009 at 6:39 PM

The difference here, if you can make that distinction, it that the truly offensive jokes are about her family, not her. They didn’t ask for this, and they shouldn’t suffer it. And Letterman definitely shouldn’t gain anything from it, either.

The top ten crack about Palin was in poor taste, but she’s a big girl, she can handle that. If that was all he did, she could go on there to show she has a sense of humor about herself.

But she certainly is under no obligation to have a sense of humor about his treatment of her daughters, and you should understand that.

suzyk on June 11, 2009 at 9:39 PM

I didn’t have time to view all of the above posts, so please forgive if I’m reviving a dead horse, but its obvious to me from watching that clip that he’s neglecting to mention that the ONLY daughter in attendance at the game was Willow. Therefore, the logical conclusion is that he WAS stating that Willow was the daughter knocked up.

But, Dave can’t be bothered to actually apologize. Instead, most likely under pressure from his producers and sponsors, he side stepped the issue and mocked the Palins for being confused about his intentions…almost sounded like he was making himself out to be the victim here.

Jim Treacher on June 11, 2009 at 9:16 PM

Let’s compare that to the way the Bush girls were treated for GASP underage drinking in college. The media treated it as if they were plotting to blow up a federal building somewhere. In the meantime, Al Gore’s son is a complete druggie and the media barely mentions it.

Which brings us to the Obama girls. They should be off limits to commentary with this one exception. The Obama’s trot them out as props whenever they need to look like a family instead of the bitter vindictive racists that they are. To a certain extent it goes both ways. By exposing them to the media, the Obamas are inviting the public into their family. That doesn’t give Letterman license to discuss major league baseball players raping them but by their actions the Obamas are putting their kids in the public eye and open to greater scrutiny.

Though the Clintons had no parenting skills they at least had enough sense to make the public events all about them and not their daughter. The Bush girls were older and in college so a different set of rules existed for them. It is clear to me that the Obama family is setting their kids up to be a repeat of Amy Carter and the miserable human being she turned out to be.

highhopes on June 11, 2009 at 9:48 PM

Geministorm on June 11, 2009 at 9:42 PM

There is no logic to this situation. The man is supposedly a professional comedian and the best joke he can come up is about illicit sex during a baseball game? Comedians used to work harder. Compare Letterman to Johnny Carson whose bit was sometimes a bit blue but never to the point of being offensive.

I’m hoping the pressure keeps up a few more days and CBS is forced to deal with the situation in some way other than letting Letterman do the typical liberal “sorry if you were offended about what I said” routine. As a man and father, Letterman needs to apologize to the Palin family and then go on an indeterminate unpaid leave of absence during which he is required to get counseling and make amends by doing some sort of community service to children violated by creepy adults.

My advice for the Governor is to stop taking her kids to campaign events. Be your own woman. The lefties will keep accusing you of using your family to shield yourself from criticism. Ronald Reagan wasn’t defined as a great loving dad. He was defined as a champion of conservatism.

I called CBS (again) and the young woman who answered said that the calls have been coming non stop. She was also upset because some callers were abusive to her, asking her if she was a “f***ing liberal” and using foul language.

I told her that it wasn’t her fault, and gently asked her if she thought Letterman’s joke was appropriate, and she resoundly answered, “NO!”. She also added that whether she is a liberal or not was irrelevant. I agreed with her and explained that a lot of people are angry, and that unless CBS does something, it may not stop. I also told her that she was not to blame, and to keep her chin up. Then she forwarded me to a voicemail so I can leave a scathing message to the powers that be.

Folks, if we call, let’s not abuse the people answering phones. It’s their job, and they are completely innocent of any transgression committed by Letterman.

The jokes about Gov. Palin and either of her daughters were tawdry and par for the course in much of television entertainment these days. Letterman has the range of humor found in middle-school boys.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Letting your opponent restrict you without reason is a recipe for disaster. Take the example of Claire Chennault and the AVG against the Japanese in China. Chennault should have been wiped out in days. He won because HE dictated the way he was going to fight.

The thought that Governor Palin should not take her children on a trip and to the ball game because old gap toothed perverts will misbehave makes me want to puke. “Blame the Victim” just doesn’t play well here.

Obama and Scowly take their kids with them. Can you imagine what would happen if someone made a comment like that about THEM???

When the other guy is reading from Machiavelli, you sure as hell won’t win by sitting there singing Kum Bay Yah and reading the Teletubbies script.

I think one of the things we need on the right is a conservative version of Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. I know that will cause a mind-lock for a lot of people.

However, we don’t have someone who can organize and mobilize people in a case like this. We’ll never have the ability to get busloads of people down to the local CBS affiliates for protests.. or would we. There are a lot of conservative retirees.

The trouble is, who would make a good conservative Jessie or al.. Perhaps we can draft Ted Nugent.

Again, the problem is that the majority of the people who are righteously p*ssed about this have to work tommorrow, probably a 10-12 hour day. Doesn’t leave much time for rabble rousing.

For example, he unleashed his hatred of both Presidents Bush and other “neo-conservatives” in online essays. As even some “progressives” such as the influential Adbusters magazine publicly admit, “neoconservative” is often used as a derogatory code word for “Jews”. As well, even a cursory glance at “white supremacist” writings reveals a hatred of, say, big corporations that is virtually indistinguishable from that of anti-globalization activists.

While von Brunn was many things, including deeply confused, he wasn’t quite the mainstream conservative and/or “rightwinger” currrently being depicted on leftwing blogs and by liberal commentators.
For example, true to his nihilistic Niechtzean philosophy, von Brunn hated Chrisitianity, which he condemned as the main source of “weakness” in W

estern civilization.

Whether said Western civilization would be what it is without the influence of Christianity, and whether said civilization would be worth defending so ardently, aren’t questions that seem to have troubled von Brunn.

For example, von Brunn frequented Ron Paul discussion forums, where reasoned discourse is thin on the ground. It’s true that Mr. Paul was allowed a podium at the most recent GOP Presidential debate; however, let’s recall that Al Sharpton was granted a similar platform at the Democratic counterpart, within living memory.

In addition, von Brunn is now being associated with the LIberty Lobby. William F. Buckley famously purged the mainstream conservative movement of the John Birch Society, and anti-semitic groups like the Liberty Lobby, way back in the early 1960s. For his pains, the Liberty Lobby accused Buckley of being a “mouthpiece” for the Jewish Anti-Defamation League. (After 14 years, Buckley won a libel judgement against the group.)

Well, that reminds me about the old joke about the lineman who was called into the office because Mrs. Murray on Main Street complained about the worker using foul language

The worker answered his boss with “Well, I was under the pole and Jon dropped a wrench which cracked my helmet cutting my scalp. I looked up and said ‘really Jonathan, you simply must learn to be more cautious with your equipment’”

I personally would probably not browbeat the person answering the phone. However, there probably are a number of cases where it is a leftist moonbat working there and the person complaining picks up the snarkiness.

When you have a lot of spilled gas around it don’t take much…

The other problem is that this type of anger is what happens when there is an injustice. Imus makes an idiotic comment and he gets instantly canned. Ms California makes a simple statement and she gets canned and flamed and death threats. etc etc.

Here we have a clear cut case where letterman should get fired along with the writers, or, at the least, suspended for a month.. Butttt. nope, he’s on giving Palin and us the finger.

Notice that the NOW gang also has been silent on how Muslims treat women? Did you also notice how they are silent when Muslim women get murdered by their fathers or husbands over some minor thing? The NOW gang is truly selective and they rarely speak out on abuses of conservative women. They must have felt some heat about their three day silence on Lettermans awful joke concerning Willow.

atheling on June 11, 2009 at 10:08 PM

Yes and no. When calling to my Congressional representatives or in situations like this, I am always civil to the person who answers because I know that he/she is merely a tool of the system. Probably a young person on the first job or nearly so. Same goes for the e-mails I send because it isn’t like a Congressman can be bothered reading e-mail from constituents when there is a 20-something staffer who can read it and generate the appropriate form e-mail that does nothing but thank you for your comments while the Congressman goes about ignoring what you said and voting for the agenda of the filthy liar in the White House.

That being said, I wouldn’t call these people innocent. They choose where they are working and, particularly in the case of Congressional staffers, they have made the choice to defend whatever their boss is on the record of supporting. They should expect some level of abuse for doing so. There is no cause to be rude to them but let’s not call them innocents either.

How many times did Governor Palin go to baseball games in New York or any other state besides Alaska before she was picked as McCain’s VP? She has probably made more trips to the lower 48 since the November election than the previous 10 years. She is campaigning or fund raising or keeping in the public eye or whatever it is you want to call it. Thats fine. But don’t drag the kids into it. It has nothing to do with “feminism” really. It has a lot to do with common decency.

It has a lot to do with respect. Can’t help notice Dave said nothing bout Obama’s mother who was also a “knocked up” unwed teenager, I wonder why?

It has to do with Bristol, she wasn’t there as the article in the NYT clearly spelled out, 2 days BEFORE he attacked Palin.

Now, SouthernGal, considering all of your points are proven wrong, will you stand tall and condemn Letterman and the left for this vicious attack on a child?

WRONG WRONG WRONG. This type of behavior by Davey Boy and the silence of the left amounts to intimidation. I doubt the left is smart enough to orchestrate or coordinate this but nonetheless it is intimidation. If Gov Palin lets herself be intimidated then her range of movement will continue to be restricted.

One of the things I learned way back in the Martial Arts was never let anyone get you cornered. If they try then cause pain and give yourself manuevering room.

ddrintn on June 12, 2009 at 12:00 AM

I’m going to give him the credit a 62 year old man who’s been doing this for years should have – and that is namely that he did a cursury check of the facts before he opened his mouth. He clearly knew Palin attended the game – clearly knew at least one daughter was there. I’m thinking – well, any idiot would have checked WHICH daughter were there.

Could I be wrong? Yes.

Uhm No.

Letterman said
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter … and now they’re upset with me…

Key point here “jokes about people in the news

The question then is “what was in the news?”

This is what was in the news.

On June 7, the AP reported
“Palin was being honored Sunday at an anniversary celebration for the Long Island-based Independent Group Home Living Inc. after attending a New York Yankees game. She was joined by her husband, daughter Willow and a sister.”

Lets recap K!

Who: Palin, her husband, daughter Willow

Where: New York Yankees game

When: June 6th

Why: was Palin in NY? honored Sunday at an anniversary celebration for the Long Island-based Independent Group Home Living Inc. She was doing charity work.

Now what in this is there to make fun of?

Is it possible that no one, not Letterman, not the idiot that wrote the “joke” not who ever it is that approves this crap didn’t know which daughter was with Palin?

NO, it is not possible.

In all honesty, why would she want to go to New York? The state keeps electing braindead liberals and the occasional law and order Republican mayor who is a social liberal.

And with unemployment as it is, I don’t think many on that level are going to quit their jobs out of principle. At the rate things are going right now, I’d answer freaking phones at CBS if it’ll give me a living.

Speedwagon82, your hatred is gonna eat you up.

She was not “campaigning or fund raising” for her self. She was invited to be a speaker at a charity event.

A charity event for kids with “special needs”, do you find that evillllll!?

This was her schedule for the week of June

On Friday morning, Palin will attend an event for S.M.I.L.E., a charity which supports families of children with Down Syndrome,

Thursday, June 4, 2009
Palin to walk for autism

As we learn that Gov. Sarah Palin will participate in a third event in New York State this weekend,

Gov. Palin will spend Saturday in Auburn, NY to help the town celebrate what organizers call Founders Day, as well as the 50th anniversary of Alaska’s statehood.

Then Sunday on Long Island, the governor will be honored by the Independent Group Home Living Foundation for her support of families who have children with special needs.

Add another event to her Sunday schedule. Autism Speaks is sponsoring its Walk Now for Autism Awareness and Fundraising Event Sunday, June 7, and Gov. Palin is scheduled to participate, according to the organization. In fact, the group’s press release says:

“Governor Palin will walk alongside her sister, Heather Bruce, and her nephew, who is on the autism spectrum.”

The walk begins at 11:00 AM at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, located in Westchester County. After the walk, it’s on to St. James in Suffolk County to receive the IGHL award.

Wow! Speedwagon8 what evil things she’s doing, raising money for kids.

The fact is Speedwagon8, if Letterman didn’t make this attack on Palin you would not have even known she was in New York.

The fact is Speedwagon8, she was in New York, she did raise money for kids with special needs, autism, S.M.I.L.E., a charity which supports families of children with Down Syndrome.

And for that she was attacked. Pathetic.

You have to be one sick f puppy to attack someone, anyone doing charity work.

It gives the left wing another talking point that she is neglecting her constituents. New York didn’t elect her to anything and would vote for a million Hillary Clinton clones before doing so. She needs to do what is right for Alaskans. Make the state the model of conservative belief. If she does a good enough job, she will cinch 2012 easy.

Yes, Sarah Palin is such a HORRIBLE mother for wanted to spend time with her child at a baseball game and to show that child part of the USA.Expanding a child’s horizons is such a rotten idea. What a HORRIBLE idea to show that child the value and worth of helping others, to show her the value and worth of sacrificing time and effort to make the difference in the life of another child. portlandon on June 12, 2009 at 1:00 PM

My advice for the Governor is to stop taking her kids to campaign events. Be your own woman. The lefties will keep accusing you of using your family to shield yourself from criticism. Ronald Reagan wasn’t defined as a great loving dad. He was defined as a champion of conservatism.

Speedwagon82 on June 11, 2009 at 10:06 PM

Then again, no one ever asked Reagan whether his children would interfere with his ability to govern. The public has a natural curiosity about politicians’ families, because they are a reflection of values and show their humanity. It has gone beyond healthy inquisitiveness in Palin’s case.
