Video: Letterman non-apologizes to Palin; Update: McCain scolds Letterman

posted at 2:42 pm on June 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

I had a few long moments of panic after publishing last night’s post when I considered that Entertainment Weekly might have taken him out of context. Surely he didn’t really defend himself by saying he only meant to call Bristol a whore, not Willow. Except … he did, as you’re about to see. No apology, either; the closest we get is an admission that he “probably” regrets having told those jokes — which are duly repeated here in their entirety — but only after admitting that he “kind of likes” the one comparing Palin herself to a “slutty flight attendant.” On some basic level he doesn’t understand what the problem is here (e.g., comparing Spitzer and Alex Rodriguez, each of whom sought fame, to Bristol, who didn’t), and no wonder: Much of the left’s derision towards Palin and her daughter stems from the perception that they’re white trash, a class-oriented smear which Dave naturally figured he could mine for a few safe slut/whore jokes at their expense. Imagine his mystification at suddenly finding out that he can’t. Evidently it’s not just cultured, well educated, progressive girls like the Obama sisters who are off-limits for cheap shots.

Sounds like the ‘Cuda’s done playing nice with him after this. Exit quotation from the governor’s spokesman: “The Palins have no intention of providing a rating’s boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”

Update: A mild rebuke from Maverick, but better than saying nothing at all.

Republican Senator John McCain has a message for late-night comic David Letterman: Enough with the jokes about Sarah Palin and her family…

“I don’t understand why Letterman would say that about a young woman,” McCain said during a telephone interview on Thursday. “They (the Palins) deserve some kind of protection from being the butt of late-night hosts.”

Good grief. What’s your problem with men?

I’m wondering why A-Rod isn’t complaining himself. I know he’s far from your typical innocent, but surely he should be objecting to this?

He’s probably waiting outside Letterman’s TV studio… With his favorite Louisville slugger… Batter up………………

SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 5:20 PM

Anyway, I have more solidarity with liberal men than I do with conservative, anti-choice women like Palin and her hypocritical abstinence-pushing, baby-having daughter.

SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 5:07 PM

Hmmmmm.

How dare she not have an abortion instead? The nerve of that baby-haver!!!

hillbillyjim on June 11, 2009 at 5:20 PM

And Southern Gal, I mean it seriously. There are lots of reasons women have abortions. It doesn’t make you a monster. But when a woman loses a child she loses a part of herself. If she can grieve what was lost and forgive herself, her past loses its power over what she thinks and feels and how she responds to seeing happy, healthy families.

If that’s not what you’re dealing with, I apologize. If it is, please know that you don’t have to carry that burden with you forever. There is forgiveness for everyone who acknowledges what they’ve done wrong. There is also healing for those who can grieve and receive the same grace that every last one of us needs in order to stay afloat.

She’s a gay man trapped the the body of a gay man who cant get laid even with a fist full of pardons cures for AIDS in a San Fransicko bathhouse.

doriangrey on June 11, 2009 at 5:22 PM

I don’t think Bristol had a choice; her mother is a socially conservative governor. It would not have helped Palin’s career if Bristol had chosen to terminate the pregnancy like the guy who knocked her up probably wanted.

SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 5:16 PM

This is where I get confused. You say you’re pro choice, but condemn this girl for having her baby…which was probably…her choice, by her upbringing. So she’s hated for making the WRONG choice, according to you? Why is it, that it seems, most people that say they’re pro choice, don’t really offer any choice, but abortion?

And the way you speak, and offer your judgement of this girl….isn’t that what you accuse the right of being? Judgemental, religous zealots? You sound just like that.

capejasmine on June 11, 2009 at 5:22 PM

Are you saying she had a choice? What would her mother think!

SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 5:21 PM

hillbillyjim on June 11, 2009 at 5:26 PM

That’s true pro choice means Get an Abortion ,it doesn’t mean Abortion is an option. It means the person is irresponsible if they bring life into the world because that’s a bad thing to do….just ask Barack H Obama’s Mom oh sorry you can’t.

There, SG, FIFY!!

Sweet_Thang on June 11, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Pro-abortion is a coping mechanism. It’s actually tremendously sad.

I’ll never forget when I was in junior high doing research for a persuasive speech on abortion. I read a magazine article where a bunch of pro-aborts gathered outside an abortion clinic and watched an aborted 7-month-old baby struggling to survive in front of them all. There was a huge cheer as the baby finally gave up and died.

That was woman empowerment. Joycelyn Elders said every woman should have an abortion so she could feel her power, her freedom.

It’s a sad, sad condition. I’ll say it again: denial is a b!tch, and it makes b!tches out of previously alive, previously vibrant women.

Ridiculous position built on a bunch of assumptions on your part. You can see this, can’t you? You “don’t think” she had a choice. Yet you really don’t know, do you? You just assume something, then attack. You then assume something else on top of your previous assumption. And then you yet again assume what the father was thinking. This is rich. SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 5:45 PM

doriangrey on June 11, 2009 at 5:47 PM

Southern Gal, it is true that many young women don’t make their own choice about birth or abortion. A large majority of women make the choice to abort because a parent, boyfriend, or counselor pressures them into it. There is a lot of pressure from them before the abortion, but usually the woman herself is the one who has to live with the consequences the most deeply. And it is painful, beyond what most people could imagine, because the woman is NOT a monster. She is a hurting, desperate person looking for support and often only getting pressure.

If that’s you, please know you’re not alone and that a lot of us really, really grieve for the situations where the loving family isn’t there to support a woman in desperate circumstances. A lot of people failed you. What you did was understandable even if it wasn’t good. Nobody wants to crucify you for it, but we don’t want that past to kill you either – the part of you that loves and is loved.

Again, if this isn’t you then please forgive me for suggesting it. I just don’t want to leave the hope unsaid.

If she got knocked up while preaching abstinence?

hypocritical abstinence-pushing, baby-having daughter.

SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 5:07 PM

In an intellectual sense, I’ve discovered your root problem: just like many Libs, you have no understanding of a timeline. (The Palin daughter didn’t get knocked up while preaching abstinence; she had her baby first, then talked about how abstinence alone isn’t enough, and then became a spokeswoman for abstinence most of all.)

Denying the importance of a timeline means you will never understand key concepts of personal development like Cause and Effect, Sin and Redemption or even Maturity and Growth, because you will always assume the person under discussion has two faces simultaneously. No wonder you feel more at home with guys; everyone knows we never really grow up.

Emotionally, of course, your reason for being a Lib is your fervent belief that anyone who preaches “do right” is a hypocrite who sooner or later will fail to live up to their own expectations. So your standard of right-and-wrong behavior is not yours at all, but is the anti-right of people who may have been weaker than you at one time but have since grown up.

I recommend that you take 2 Hotairs and call me in the morning.

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 5:55 PM

Letterman probably didn’t know. Every night his jokes are the weakest and least inventive possible. His writers’ formula was probably Palin + A-Rod = unwed pregnancy + guy who cheated on his wife. Sadly with Dave it is always the most obvious punchline possible in order to save his writers and his audience any mental effort.

But no – I believe he actually aimed the joke at Willow – sick individual that he is. He’s clearly got a wild hair up his arse for Palin – I mean – the election is over and Joe Biden is plowing fertile comedy ground every hour. But Dave doesn’t want to go there.

No I clearly think he aimed that at Willow.

I mean – the election is over and Joe Biden is plowing fertile comedy ground every hour. But Dave doesn’t want to go there.

Another plus for Conan. He’s actually done a few “Biden is an idiot” bits during his first week. Biden whispering to Sotomayor that he likes quesadilla’s had my husband and I cracking up.

BakerAllie on June 11, 2009 at 6:10 PM

I have not posted here in a long time. But this just has my blood boiling. I wrote about 500 words worth of a response but decided the best thing to say is: I hope Sarah does come on the show just to be able to kick Dave in the nards (if he has any) on national TV.
Leave the kids out of it!!!

Joeyyy on June 11, 2009 at 6:11 PM

No I clearly think he aimed that at Willow.

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 6:05 PM

Yeah, neither of us can go back and read his mind from a few days ago. You tend to believe he is sick. I think he pockets his $40MM a year and barely puts any effort into the monologue before he reads the jokes from the Q Cards.

I don’t know if he’ll make a joke about Biden, but I’d bet if he does it won’t be funny.

Joeyyy on June 11, 2009 at 6:11 PM

Remember when someone took a shot at Michelle Obama during the campaign and Dick Durbin came out and said …

“The hottest fires of hell are reserved for those who go after the wives of candidates.”

Remember that?

LOL!

And now they just say “Oh! Cute Little PC Joke!” whenever one of theirs makes a joke about raping the 14 year old daughter of a Republican.

They should just admit that Dave’s an idiot that should be fired. They’d at least save their credibility.

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 6:14 PM

Sorry if this has already been posted somewhere amid the hundreds of comments:

Conan O’Brien’s “Tonight Show” reversed its ratings decline and showed growth for the first time Wednesday night.

After seven nights of drops, NBC’s “Tonight” may have found its bottom. The talk show rebounded 10% from Monday’s performance, climbing to a 3.2 last night in the household ratings.

That was enough to edge out David Letterman’s “Late Show,” which had bested O’Brien’s “Tonight” in the overnights for the first time Tuesday evening. Letterman pulled a 3.1 rating, dropping slightly from the previous night.

Letterman’s lower number comes after headline-making jokes about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter.

Please refrain from using that word.

You come here defending vile jokes, but pretend to get the vapors over some rough language?

If you actually showed some respect, I’d believe you were sincere.

dedalus on June 11, 2009 at 6:11 PM

I agree with you, he’s too lazy to even remove an unfunny, tasteless joke about the same daughter being a prostitute the next day. When he definitely should have known better.

His non-apology (no, I meant your OTHER daughter!) was equally phoned-in.

JeffWeimer on June 11, 2009 at 6:21 PM

Because it wasn’t about Bristol. Bristol wasn’t at the game. Letterman doesn’t even address that. He clarified nothing, except that he gets even more angry and self-pitying than usual when he can’t defend his behavior.

Jim Treacher on June 11, 2009 at 6:01 PM

Of course you think that. Otherwise how could you be outraged?

You might be the most humorless self-professed comedian I’ve ever heard of. Which I suppose is funny in and of itself.

crr6 on June 11, 2009 at 6:22 PM

That’s the most bass-ackwards argument I’ve ever heard. Jim didn’t make the joke – David Letterman did. And since Bristol Palin wasn’t at the game – a reasonable man would conclude the joke was aimed at the daughter that did attend it.

Uhm – that would be 14 year old Willow.

Facts are cold masters, no?

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Far be it from me to act as an apologist for Letterman (I think he’s a complete tool)… but Jim, is it somehow inconceivable that Letterman thought that the older of the two was the one at the game? Everything else falls out from there. That would make it a combination of a rough-but-in-bounds joke (as you pointed out), combined with a simple mis-identification.

What am I missing here? It’s not like there’s some indelible imprint for everyone that ties names like Bristol and Willow to age 18 versus 14.

VekTor on June 11, 2009 at 6:28 PM

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Or maybe he made a mistake. Has he ever made jokes of that nature before in his long television career?

Admit it, you’d prefer to be outraged.

crr6 on June 11, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Update: McCain scolds Letterman

Scolds him? A 62 year old man makes sexual intercourse “jokes” about a 14 year old girl and McCain “scolds” him? He should call him what he is, a sick pedophile.

MB4 on June 11, 2009 at 6:29 PM

I cannot believe the gall of some posters here.

Really, calling Letterman a thinking man? Absurd.

Also SouthernGal, get off your holy-rolling high horse. You are so utterly judgemental. Aren’t you supposed to be praising single mothers as heroes or something?

Well, I suppose you can’t because Bristol’s dad is still in the picture, so she’s not quite as glorifiable as generational single mothers.

And that would be the greatest tragedy of all.

I think Letterman’s turning into a flaming fag

crr6 on June 11, 2009 at 6:28 PM

I prefer to assume the guy knows the facts. He’s been a professional comedian since the 70′s. He knows how jokes can get you in trouble.

But Palin gets under his skin – so I think he loses it. And he can afford to – he knows he’s got apologists like you out here to defend his perversion.

A reasonable man concludes the joke was aimed at the one daughter was there – that would be 14 year old Willow Palin.

Personally – I’m not outraged – so I won’t admit that I want to be. I’m not outraged by anything your side says or does anymore. You have no boundaries or rules of civility – so why not just admit … “Yeah Dave was making a rape joke about a 14 year old girl.”

Own it.

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 6:36 PM

This bum’s about as funny as a fart in church!

Cybergeezer on June 11, 2009 at 6:36 PM

I hope we registered our protests to CBS as well as here on HA, I know I did.

Can you imagine if the “joke” was about the Obama’s older daughter?

Maybe we ought to try that in a few years and see if the libs are so “tolerant” and find it amusing and urbane

clnurnberg on June 11, 2009 at 6:38 PM

“The Palins have no intention of providing a rating’s boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”

Weak. Especially, the second line. As I already posted, other politicians that had the guts to talk to Letterman face to face after he joked about them helped themselves a great deal. Palin clearly isn’t interested in moving to the next level. She is guaranteed now to get heavy duty treatment from Letterman from now on, so get your crying towels ready.

Palin could have really helped the perception of her nationally if she handled this correctly, She has not. Some “Cuda”. I’m starting to believe that the people that call her an empty suit might be correct. She certainly seems to make bad choices under the slightest pressure.

She should have said she was going to go there and demand an apology face to face. It would be a big score for her. Plan to stay in Alaska, Governor. You’re not ready for the big leagues.

Moesart on June 11, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Send Letterman to my place for some R&R.
I’ll have him digging holes for fence posts,
setting posts, stringing wire and if he complains once,
I will dig a hole …You know the rest.

Middle Aged Punks like him are not wise. He never worked a day of his life. Probably cheated on taxes and is addicted to several substances.

Send him to me.

old trooper2 on June 11, 2009 at 6:43 PM

I’m wondering why A-Rod isn’t complaining himself. I know he’s far from your typical innocent, but surely he should be objecting to this?

Moesart on June 11, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Since there’s no possible way you could be interested in the best interests of Gov. Palin – you’ll excuse me if I discount your advice to her.

Fact is – Palin, nor any Conservative should appear or talk to anyone in the State Controlled Media or their surrogates – like David Letterman.

The next election – when she moves to the “next election” – part of the war will be on the State Controlled Media. And there will be plenty of ears for that considering the damage this country will have suffered at the hands of Obama – and facilitated by his prostitutes in the media.

It’s going to be fun. So yeah – she has no reason to go on Letterman – he has no audience anyway and is a burn-out.

HondaV65 on June 11, 2009 at 6:44 PM

VekTor on June 11, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Sure, it’s conceivable, but nowhere in his “apology” does he say so. He just says he would never make a joke about a kid being raped, which is kind of tough to pull off after he’s just repeated the joke about a kid being raped.

If he wants to put forward the argument that he was actually mocking an 18-year-old girl because she had a baby out of wedlock, just like he and his girlfriend did, he can say so. He has not said so.

Letterman made the joke on purpose because Jim said so.

crr6 on June 11, 2009 at 6:34 PM

Letterman made the joke on purpose because he hasn’t said who the joke was about. He’s just sputtered about how he’d never do such a thing. Well, Dave, ya did.

Moesart on June 11, 2009 at 6:39 PM

Going on Letterman just makes her look like a cheap obamaesque publicity hound. Rape jokes have no place in any credible programming. Even playboy cought trouble for their rape column and that was about ADULTs, not teenagers.

It’s Letterman who should be removed from the bigleagues. Don’t try to elevate rape jokes to appropriate public discourse, they’re not

clnurnberg on June 11, 2009 at 6:47 PM

If I had screwed up a joke like that – and left an impression that I made a joke about raping a 14 year old – I would have bent over backwards in an apology to redeem myself. There would have been no ambiguity – I would told people “I’m an idiot – I was wrong – and I apologize deeply – very deeply – for the impression I made”.

Instead … Letterman phones in a snarky “clarification”.

No – he clearly doesn’t care – and that is why I’m convinced the perverted old fool was actually joking about 14 year old Willow. No doubt in my mind.
