Video: Letterman non-apologizes to Palin; Update: McCain scolds Letterman
posted at 2:42 pm on June 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
I had a few long moments of panic after publishing last night’s post when I considered that Entertainment Weekly might have taken him out of context. Surely he didn’t really defend himself by saying he only meant to call Bristol a whore, not Willow. Except … he did, as you’re about to see. No apology, either; the closest we get is an admission that he “probably” regrets having told those jokes — which are duly repeated here in their entirety — but only after admitting that he “kind of likes” the one comparing Palin herself to a “slutty flight attendant.” On some basic level he doesn’t understand what the problem is here (e.g., comparing Spitzer and Alex Rodriguez, each of whom sought fame, to Bristol, who didn’t), and no wonder: Much of the left’s derision towards Palin and her daughter stems from the perception that they’re white trash, a class-oriented smear which Dave naturally figured he could mine for a few safe slut/whore jokes at their expense. Imagine his mystification at suddenly finding out that he can’t. Evidently it’s not just cultured, well educated, progressive girls like the Obama sisters who are off-limits for cheap shots.
Sounds like the ‘Cuda’s done playing nice with him after this. Exit quotation from the governor’s spokesman: “The Palins have no intention of providing a rating’s boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”
Update: A mild rebuke from Maverick, but better than saying nothing at all.
Republican Senator John McCain has a message for late-night comic David Letterman: Enough with the jokes about Sarah Palin and her family…
“I don’t understand why Letterman would say that about a young woman,” McCain said during a telephone interview on Thursday. “They (the Palins) deserve some kind of protection from being the butt of late-night hosts.”

Blowback

I agree. Teenage girls who get pregnant and have the temerity to carry the baby to term are trashy sluts, if they get rid of their “mistake”, their classy. Obama’s made it clear that if either of his daughters ever gets “knocked up” they won’t be punished for their “mistake,” they’ll have the good sense to get rid of it. So I guess we will never hear any jokes about his daughters being sluts or whores. Such is the twisted logic of liberals.

DrAllecon on June 11, 2009 at 4:44 PM
Would it have been fair game in oh, 2000 for Dave to make this joke about Chelsea Clinton?
He did a lot of jokes about Hillary that year, so throwing that in the same way would have been easy.
He may have hold the joke about Bristol. But he and his writers were either too lazy and/or unconcerned to even bother to find out which daughter was at the game. If he knew, and he did for the Spitzer joke the next day then he’s despicable because he evidently doesn’t care. And yet you defend him.
It’s safe to assume YOU don’t really care either, and that makes you despicable, too.

Anyone conservative is fair game to them because they are filled with hate. To some people any Palin bashing is justified.

I think so. There are already several “Fire David Letterman” groups on Facebook.
wccawa on June 11, 2009 at 4:48 PM
Coming from the guy who made jokes about Chelsea Clinton being ugly, that doesnt hold much water.
Protection? What is he proposing? That we amend the first amendment so that the Palins never have to be offended by anything anybody says about them?
This was crude, but Bristol is putting herself on a pedestal (see People cover) as someone who got knocked up. There’s going to be blowback. If you folks want to write to sponsors and whatnot, hey, that’s your right. But McCain seems to be suggesting something else here. Very odd.
And all you people who are so offended, ask yourself – were you as offended when people made jokes about Britney Spears getting pregnant and such?

rukiddingme on June 11, 2009 at 4:50 PM
Sure, it’s comedy. We don’t censor comedians, or real political commentators, even when we can tell the difference. What gets me is that in a case where a conservative is the butt of the joke, Letterman, according to those in a position to opine, is allowed to skate with the most charitable interpretation: he didn’t mean the young daughter (even though the older daughter wasn’t there at the game, on the New York visit). Oh, well, then. No problem. On the other hand, when the shoe is on the other foot (so to speak) only the most incendiary, basest interpretation can possibly be considered, because everyone knows that conservatives have only the most evil intentions.
brambo_42 on June 11, 2009 at 4:50 PM
BTW, if having a child out of wedlock makes a woman a “slut” and being related to a public figure makes her fair game for “jokes,” then Mr. Letterman won’t mind if someone makes the same sort of joke about his wife. Right? And Mr. Letterman and his wife were adults; therefore, they should have known how to use birth control.
March Hare on June 11, 2009 at 4:51 PM
Madam, I’m am not so damned stupid as to believe that if I, in the freaking backwoods of south Georgia knew which daughter was with her in NY simply by catching the news reports, that David Letterman and his joke writers didn’t. If you don’t like the Guv, fine, argue your positions in opposition to hers. But don’t defend the indefensible based upon political agenda. It’s childish, ignorant, and really rather unsophisticated.
jimmy2shoes on June 11, 2009 at 4:51 PM

Somebody in a thread here talked about how the Chrysler dissenters were shut up by Obama’s threats – a person gives in when their family is at risk. That’s exactly how Al Qaeda in Iraq manhandled the population there to stir up trouble. When all the 12-year-old boys in a village who refuse to join AQI are baked and served to their families on a platter it tends to silence the opposition.
Letterman and his ilk have the same mind. Intact families that care for each other for life are the enemy. If you can’t destroy family love, use your opponent’s family love to get them to give up fighting you.

DrAllecon on June 11, 2009 at 4:56 PM
It would have been a truly funny joke if Letterman had said “during the 7th inning stretch, Alex Rodriguez hit on her.” “Her” being Sarah Palin herself. After all, Rodriguez is most famous for having an affair with Madonna, an attractive, older, married celebrity woman. There wasn’t even an accurate comparison to either of the Palin girls, as Rodriguez has not fathered any children with underage girls. So the entire joke was off base and uncalled for.
rockmom on June 11, 2009 at 4:57 PM
It was clearly just a joke — with the one about Sarah herself being downright funny. Sexi Sarah is just trying to milk this so that in 2012 she can lose her second national election. Next!

I will say this, you would think that someone who hada plot to kidnap his child foiled by athorities might be more sensative about other people`s children.

So Dave hasn’t just wandered off the comedian reservation, he has wandered off the Obamania Reservation.

As a “gal” you should be offended that these jokes are made to ANY woman. I am. I don’t care who they are, or where they come from, or what they do. These kind of offensive jokes, do not belong in our society. You, as a woman should be defending the female, not the jokes, or who happens to be the butt of them.
capejasmine on June 11, 2009 at 5:05 PM
Just comedy, is that right? So anything goes?
The book of Proverbs talks about people who use words as firebrands to cause destruction and death but then excuse it by saying “Am not I in sport?”
All of us know that the essence of a good joke is the audience’s universal perception of a certain grain of truth that the joke-teller twists to make funny. Therefore, a comedian with an agenda can lead his audience down a path of non-truth or misinformation if its members are more willing to laugh at error than to be austere defenders of American values. (once you’ve bought your ticket to see the show, you’ve unfortunately made your choice as to which you’ll be.)Both Leno and Letterman went down this road last year, though Leno at least still told jokes, and was occasionally countered by the objections of his bandleader. Letterman was more of a pure propagandist who was only encouraged by his.
I’ve seen Letterman described as an anti-Comic. Sounds good. His audience, IMO, is not laughing at him as much as they laugh at themselves for going to see someone who is malicious and arrogant, the full embodiment of the bad New Yorker, the guy who has made it so high(?) that he feels that he no longer has to follow the rules of good behavior or comedy. His schtick is so stale that if he had to start over again in the Heartland he couldn’t do it.
Maybe comedy shouldn’t be analyzed, but it’s perfectly fine to scrutinize it. I agree with others that Letterman was clearly trying to reinforce the overall slutty perception of the whole Palin family. If Letterman was so uninformed as to realize that the “Palin daughter” at the Yankee game was only 14, and that’s his only defense, he deserves whatever punishment his bosses and sponsors give him for being so amoral, arrogant and stupid.
If he survives, I’d love to see Todd on the show. Totally Unplugged.

SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 5:07 PM

justincase on June 11, 2009 at 5:08 PM
Letterman’s snarky non-apology is typical of cowards like him, Jon Stewart et al. They are all too happy to jump into the political fray and bash conservatives relentlessly, but when they cross the line it’s: “Hey, they’re just jokes, you morons. I’m only a comedian!” It’s the perfect Catch-22.
Moreover, any guy who looks like the love child of Alfred E. Newman and Bea Arthur has no business commenting on anyone’s appearance – especially Sarah Palin’s. I also wonder who really knocked up Letterman’s then girlfriend. Maybe that slut pulled the train for the entire American League.

You are NO feminist. Feminist defend women, no matter what. You’re a liberal, who condones the hate, and vitriol you spew, on conservatives. You’re in the party of tolerance? Bah!
Bristol espouses abstinence, not because she’s a hypocrite. She espouses it, to get the word out to young women, that having a baby at such a young age, isn’t glamorous…or cool. It’s a lot of work, and she’s learning that, the hard way.
The mere fact that you were offended by an off color remark about the Obama girls, yet condone the so called “jokes” against the Palin girls, including rape, neither makes you tolerant, nor feminist. Just another, in a long line of liberals who find nothing better to do, then spread their hate, and disdain, for those who don’t believe like you do.
