Video: Frank’s strawman snit

posted at 3:15 pm on June 11, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Consider this a nice bookend to John Ziegler’s appearance yesterday on CNBC’s sister network MS-NBC. Contessa Brewer had a teary-eyed fit when Ziegler dared to criticize the network; this time, it’s the guest who throws a tantrum and walks off when the host challenges his strawman. As James Joyner remarked on Twitter, is this the man you want in charge of executive compensation? Hardly (via Michelle):

Frank whines about getting cut off, but he trotted out an old Obama strawman — he accused the host, Mark Haines, of wanting to do “nothing” about the economic crisis, which isn’t at all what Haines said.  When Haines tried correcting the record, Franks played victim and whined his way off the stage.

Unfortunately, that ended the challenge to Frank’s push to legislate executive pay, which showed some promise.  Haines noted that the shareholders of public corporations nowadays tend to be mutual funds and not “Mom and Pop” shareholders, but there’s a reason for that, and it’s a good one.  Thanks to efforts by the Reagan administration to lower barriers to entry in the market through retirement funds, we have transformed in one-quarter century from a nation with a 15% investor class to a 70% investor class.  These shareholders aggregated in mutuals for strength in numbers.  At the same time, companies began tying compensation to stock performance, which pushed businesses to get more efficient and incentivized execs to improve their companies, where the standard salary+perqs packages had failed in the 1970s.

Did that lead to excess and bad long-term management?  Yes, it did, although that has been far outweighed by a huge improvement in efficiency, productivity, and entrepeneurship.  Shareholders didn’t complain because the short-term thinking boosted stocks and profits, but those days are over.  The task of rebuilding will force companies to look to long-term health, and the shareholders that have taken huge losses in the last year will be much more likely to press for that kind of strategy, as the losses they took cannot be recovered in the short term.   With or without government intervention, look for the market to correct the excesses and failures.

Not to mention the internal struggles he must be dealing with.

Exactly, his rectum must be the size of the Lincoln Tunnel. You could probably drive a couple of semis through there, side by side and still have enough room for emergency lanes.

How in the world does the likes of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd continue to be re-elected. What is wrong with these people that they will support such blatant criminals?

Sounds about right. Add in the rest of the leftist scum to that.

This lisping fecal matter wouldn’t last 60 seconds in a normal job interview, for just about every job on the planet, based simply on his appearance and personality. How is it that a man with as much money as he’s gained over the years, cannot afford to find an ironed suit which fits, or comb his damn hair…let alone be reelected term after term?

It’s not like we’re overlooking the most basic qualifying professional standards because the man is a genius. I’ve witnessed wiser primates in the San Diego zoo.

His personality grates like salt coated 150 grit sandpaper on a fresh war wound…so no charisma points awarded there.

WTF Massachusetts?!

Votin’ ain’t that wicked hahd. Leave the bah…unpahk ya cah…and vote NO on this here supah losah!

I think we’ve probably had enough of the graphic Barney rudeness, huh, guys? Nobody can stand him, and God knows he’s a living caricature, but leave that nastiness out of it.

Oh please, if this guy got what he truly deserves, the American people would be going Robespierre on him and his fat stupid melon would be sitting in a fruit basket right now.

The assualts are merely verbal and Frank should count his blessings.

Whiny homo…not that theres anything wrong with that.

Don’t take it out of context, I don’t mean that as an insult or slur.

Like several others besides Frank, the Representatives that control the nation’s purse strings through their various committees should be interviewed in depth by a phalanx of economically wise media types–we know which ones qualify. Somehow, our members of Congress need to be reminded that they work for us.

Neither Frank, Pelosi, Waxman, nor others should be able to get away with this prima donna nonsense. They don’t know the details nor the long and short term consequences of the legislation that they craft. It’s time for them to answer questions, clarify in follow-up questions, respond to alternative options, and justify their thinking. No empty sound bites or straw me/false choices should be allowed.

In 1993, Barney Frank and the economically illiterate Democrat congress limited the tax deduction for executive salaries to $1 Million. Of course that excluded entertainers and athletes because we all know how vital they are to the economy.

At any rate, that didn’t change the market value for executive compensation-it just distorted it. As a result, companies began issuing more stock options and other perqs to replace the salaries they could no longer write off. That encouraged execs to favor short term gains over the long term health of their companies.

Ironically, execs made a lot more money that way than the traditional salary route.

Once again we are offered a government solution to a government created “problem”.

Yeah, SERIOUSLY. Equate that to first comment on this page. That’s the textbook definition of “nasty” and “rude” in the context I’m talking about, not “don’t be mean”.

When it takes a turn like yours did, I guess Letterman can use that excuse, too, right?

By all means, let’s stop the Frank bashing.

As if this diseased, worthless pervert even cares.

Don’t worry, Barney Frank will merrily proceed with destroying the economy of this nation.

NoDonkey on June 11, 2009 at 5:58 PM

You all are quite “hard” on Barney. Perhaps he is nursing a case of an**warts, or a headache. Besides, it takes alot of energy and effort to be the biggest baffoon in Congress, and must be a real challenge to speak with a mouth full of marbles.

“Loose lips leave Lucy lucky”, repeated 10 times, and he would be in the psych ward.

Santelli and Kudlow are the only ones I can stand on CNBC anymore. Kramer is nothing but a lap dog for Ozbama, having been read the riot act by CEO Imelt. I used to watch him, but since he licked O’s ars and issued a bunch of apologies after he said O was wrecking the economy, it’s off to another channel.

I wonder how long it will be before Kudlow becomes a star on Fox News or Fox Business Network.

Cleveland Steamer on June 11, 2009 at 6:09 PM

No, no, no, NoDonkey! By all means, BASH away! He more than earns it every time he opens his lying, miserable lips.

All I ask is that descriptive sphincter analogies get left to the…cretins on the left.

What’s Barney got up his butt? Oops.

EMD on June 11, 2009 at 6:31 PM

Barney Frank sounds like he’s got a throat full of tapioca when he talks.

A bigger reprobate than he is hard to fathom, but he’s surrounded by his equals in those great halls and chambers to be sure.

Barney Frank’s a prostate exam looking for someplace to happen!

FINALLY! It took you guys in the media long enough to finally ask him some DAMN QUESTIONS!

Barney Frank is far more responsible for the Mortgage Crisis Meltdown than Bush, he was the one who said Freddie and Fannie were safe and sound last summer and what happens? HE GETS RE-ELECTED YOU STUPID MORONS IN MASS!!!

Please there should be press reporters stalking him asking questions every single day “What did you know and when did you know it” the same for that Conneticuit Senator what’s his face with Countrywide?

The adults are in charge, clearly.

Right libs?

I am glad Barny Frank left because we would never have gotten an answer from him anyway.

Let the Audits begin.

MSGTAS on June 12, 2009 at 10:24 AM

He must not have been his type.

Black Adam on June 13, 2009 at 5:58 PM

When people asked if Fannie was safe, he thought they meant “his fanny.”

This is why he said yes.
