“Right-wing” Holocaust Museum shooter may have targeted … the Weekly Standard; Update: Fox News also targeted?

posted at 3:45 pm on June 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Weird, huh? What possible grievance could a Jew-hating 9/11 Truther who ranted about Bill O’Reilly and “neocons” have against a magazine owned by Rupert Murdoch and edited by Bill Kristol? Maybe he detected a leftward drift in the Standard’s editorial slant lately? You know how irascible those “right-wingers” can be, especially when they’re fed a steady diet of Fox News. Which, um, Von Brunn hated.

I guess he’s from the conservative-hating wing of conservatism. Big tent!

Two other sources said two FBI agents arrived shortly after 5:00 p.m. Thursday at the 17th Street offices of the magazine. They told staffers that they had found the address of the magazine on a piece of paper associated with the shooter, James von Brunn, and asked whether the Standard had received any threats…

The suggestion that the Standard may have been a target complicates any view of the racist shooter in contemporary left-right terms. Von Brunn’s white supremacist roots put him under the rubric of a “right-wing extremist,” but the substance of his views — which included everything from believing that President Bush may have been in on the September 11 attacks to denying that President Obama is an American citizen — are too far on the fringe to fit into conventional political classification.

MacRanger claims Von Brunn’s a registered Democrat from Maryland but offers no evidence to substantiate that. Although even if he is, I think Kathy Shaidle’s discovery of which politician’s message boards he’s been frequenting is more revealing of Von Brunn’s politics than whatever his registration might be. Exit question: Olby, a renowned Fox-hater himself, will still find a way to blame this all on Rush Limbaugh, right?

Update: So deranged did this textbook right-winger become from watching Fox News that he apparently also targeted, um, Fox News.

Law enforcement sources told WTTG/MyFoxDC.com that during a search of a car that is believed to belong von Brunn, investigators found a notebook with information about six to nine locations in the D.C. area, including the National Holocaust Museum. Other locations on the list included the U.S. Capitol, the White House, the Washington Post, and a FOX News location.

Investigators followed up at each of the locations, trying to find out if there were any sightings of the suspect or any correspondence, MyFoxDC.com reported.

Odds are good that the Von Brunn story will quietly disappear from “Countdown” sometime soon.

I think the security guard’s family would be somewhat comforted by the fact that Johns and his fellow security guards prevented more bloodshed. von Brunn was prevented from escaping and carrying on his rampage elsewhere. The fact that Von Brunn may have had other victims in mind – and why – I do think is relevant.

Meh, the general populace has already internalized the “Marxist is to Nazi as left is to right” valuation line. There’s nothing we can do about it. It doesn’t matter that Nazis are leftists in ideology and practice. It doesn’t matter that their squabbles were over language, not intent: that both Marxism and Fascism reduce to the same collectivism, only differing in the makeup of the rigid caste system they both require.

Nice try, AP, but the template’s already been established for this incident;

Von Brunn is a typical, everyday conservative who was whipped into a frenzy by Limbaugh, Hannity and right wing hatemongers on the Internet, and just couldn’t contain his inner Nazi (which all Rethuglicans have installed at birth) any more. We shouldn’t be surprised that this shooting is the result, and more such incidents will follow unless we do something to shut these people up. Janet Napolitano was right.

Any inconvenient facts that happen to contradict this template will be summarily stuffed down the memory hole and/or laughed into oblivion.

On another mark, the author of the thread is clearly marked on the front page. If you don’t like what Allah writes, don’t read his work. Seeing that you don’t like the person’s work and then starting off the thread with a comment about how much you don’t like their work is just extra-douchy with douce sauce on top.

The Nazi flag was in fact the red flag of Communism with an Aryan rune on it to designate both Socialism, and Aryan nationalism. Hence, National Socialists, NS, Nazi. It pretty much went like this:

* He hates Bush. (both of them)
* He hates the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
* Hates Jews and blacks.
* Holocaust denier.
* Hates Christians, especially Catholics.
* Doesn’t think Hitler went far enough.
* He is a 9-11 Troother.

Nice try, chump. Conservative isolationists in the GOP were the ones who kept the U.S. flat-footed while Hitler chewed up Europe.

And I’m sure this deranged individual shares the conservative viewpoint that the media, the Democratic Party, Congress and the President are all controlled by that EVIL JEW GEORGE SOROS.

Lizza on June 11, 2009 at 4:11 PM

Hey, the left was making nice with Mussolini and Ford had a hankering for Hitler…

Upstater85 on June 11, 2009 at 4:18 PM

Im not sure what you find “e-tabloidy” about any of HotAir,but I am sure it wouldnt be a problem for you to find another blog that suits your tastes better.

canditaylor68 on June 11, 2009 at 4:13 PM

Nope, this is the most informative place for conservatives. Where did I say otherwise?

Please debate me on the merits of my actual argument, not what you perceive to be its implications.

And am I to deduce from your ‘love it or leave it’ statement that criticism is not allowed here? Reasonable people may not disagree? Or could it be that one of us is not being reasonable?

Now which prominent American in government oversaw the crushing defeat of Hitler and the NAZI party? That’s right, Good Old Democrat Franklin Roosevelt (or Truman, technically).

Lizza on June 11, 2009 at 4:11 PM

oh and which president turned over eastern europe to Stalin??

thats right good old democRAT Roosevelt…and which turned over german POWs to Stalin after the war???

and what party made sure we pulled out of vietnam so the people of cambodia could enjoy the killing fields?

right4life on June 11, 2009 at 4:19 PM

I’m not sure how long you have been around but this is a dead horse.

kahall on June 11, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Neo Nazis = right wing.

For fogh’s sakes stop doing this rightwing/leftwing bullshyte already.

I’m more rightwing than center or left, and I think rightwing nuts are just as dangerous as leftwing nuts. This whole “debate” about whether this piece of garbage was ‘right’ or ‘left’ disgusts me.

Admitting that he’s a rightwing nut does not make the center-right have to own him, or reflects badly on you, just as Bill Clinton not having to own Cynthia McKinney’s craziness.

Please no more idiotic rhetoric. Allah, you get enough of that from some of the readership here already. Don’t kowtow to them.

Hm.

Could you please point me to posts on this site that discuss Soros as an “EVIL JEW”, to use your words, and not a hedge fund manager who has personally bankrolled organizations such as MoveOn?

MadisonConservative on June 11, 2009 at 4:21 PM

I think one of the point here is (or should be) how the MS treated this cowardly act of violence compared to the shooting in Arkansas.
That is an indication to me that the groundwork is being laid to make anyone on the “right” look like they are just one step away from committing murder. It follows that the only way to stop that is to remove weapons from anyone the though police deems to be on the “right”.
This is like the canary in the coalmine to me.

Lizza on June 11, 2009 at 4:11 PM

You mean like the left talked about how Bush, the Republican Party, Fox News, and talk radio were all controlled by that NEOCON RUPERT MURDOCH?

Don’t kid yourself. There are plenty on the left who aren’t exactly fans of the Jews. Keep in mind that Hitler was a socialist vegetarian who liked to dabble in the arts.

amerpundit on June 11, 2009 at 4:21 PM

The most vile antesemitism exists on the left , here in the US as well as in Europe. There was not a single anti- Israel demonstration (with appropriate signs that propose sending Jews back to the ovens and complimenting hitler) that was not organized by the left. There isn’t a single boycott of Israel that is not organized by the left(again, with appropriate signs advising Jews to go back to the ovens). Most of the academia , here and abroad – lefties, of course, are anti-Zionist and antisemitic. So, what was the question again ?
