Oh my: NOW inducts Letterman into its “Media Hall of Shame”
posted at 8:25 pm on June 11, 2009 by Allahpundit
Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.
The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days — it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin’s “slutty flight attendant look” — yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician’s appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman’s stature, who appears on what used to be known as “the Tiffany Network” (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer.
On that point, it’s important to note that when Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old she was the target of numerous insults based on her appearance. Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the “White House dog.” NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren’t professed conservatives.
People on Twitter are grumbling about that last paragraph but (a) given how peeved the sisterhood will be that they’re defending Palin, surely you won’t begrudge NOW some sort of ass-covering knock on conservatives here, and (b) their point is, unfortunately, too often valid, as a scroll through righty blog comments about Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton (at least before 2008) will attest. A compromise, then: The right will join in calling out sexism directed at liberal women when the left stops treating conservative women as “inauthentic” or traitors to their gender because they happen to be pro-life. Deal?
Meanwhile, Michael Steele hints at a boycott of Letterman’s show. Really? Even an awful joke is still a joke. I think the PR beating he’s taking is enough.
Update (Ed): Since NOW has been good enough to put principle above politics, then I can do the same by agreeing that conservative pundits should leave menstruation out of their criticisms of Sonia Sotomayor. If we complain about the belittling and sexualizing of conservative women in politics, then G. Gordon Liddy should stick to the substantive issues in the Sotomayor nomination. I hadn’t heard about that one until I clicked over to NOW’s site.

The sad truth of this is that what you see in Letterman’s “apology” is a certain perplexed puzzlement, because he (and other lefties) simply do not understand how anyone could be offended by a crude Sarah Palin joke. Every single person David Letterman knows would find his swipe at Palin’s kid to be hysterically funny. In the insular, parochial, and wholly bigoted world such liberals live, nasty jokes about conservatives simply do not offend. When ridiculing conservatives, they never have to check themselves for “going too far” because there is no “too far” in their world. They are protected by the utter lack of diversity in their social milieu, so when they venture out into the world and get smacked for their hate speech, they are always so pathetically shocked.

Argh, I cannot seem to get this comment through the filters. Maybe 3rd time is the charm…
Yeah, Olbercreep had that b*st**d Musto on, and he called Miss Prejean a “b***h” whilst Olby chuckled.
Then Olby went back to smearing conservatives with the museum shooter.
Creeps.

Meghan McCainn (who calls Karl Rove “creepy” and generally has plenty of comments about others ) and Michelle Obama are adults in the public arena as is Sarah Palin. Willow is 14 and that makes it wrong. Ridiculing Chelsea was wrong too.
clnurnberg on June 11, 2009 at 9:34 PM
Unfortunately, it’s a fact of life that women who speak out like Megan McCain, become fair game. I’m not saying that’s right(because I really have my doubts), but, for now, it’s the way it is. Most of these, like Sarah and Megan and Hilary, are tough enough to handle it. I kind of admire them since I’m pretty sure I would buckle under this kind of onslaught. I’m amazed that they all seem to come through it just fine and not bitter or vengeful. It’s to their amazing credit whether anyone cares to acknowledge that or not.
jeanie on June 11, 2009 at 9:34 PM
Conservatives should be extremely careful how they characterize women after this tempest in a teapot.
That goes for their treatment of Judge Sotomayor and the First Lady.
I’ll be watching to see if right-wingers truly respect women.
SouthernGal on June 11, 2009 at 9:36 PM
I agree. It was never my intent to imply that. I merely questioned something which he later clarified in response.
I believe the truth is that sexist comments have been tolerated and justified in an unofficial capacity for a wide variety of reasons in both right and left wing organizations in America.
dieudonne on June 11, 2009 at 9:36 PM
Letterman is suffering from an exaggerated sense of his own importance. He isn’t funny. He lives on the lowbred chumps of his audience. Simple answer: dumb-ass.

Even though I agree a 14 year old shouldn’t be mocked, I don’t even think we’d tolerate it if some poster said MegMac was such a b*tch that they wanted to hate F her or if they claimed Michelle Obama was a callgirl who deserves to get a disease. These are examples of things that aren’t even attempts at a joke. They are simply viral hate.

But again, when you say “both sides do it,” it perpetuates the argument that all these things are roughly equivalent.
Not all sexist comments are vile and despicable. Some are just stupid. That doesn’t make them right; it just means there are degrees of difference.

What the hell? You don’t even respect women, you idiot! You think nothing of aborting a woman because she happens to be a woman!

Whatever else she may or may not be, she’s gutsy. In the case of Megan, I think she actually enjoys the attention she gets, no matter how negative.

Allow me to clarify. I do not believe that either side is innocent but that does not mean that all infractions are morally equivalent. It was never my intent to imply that.
As for the rest of what I said …. The violations on both sides have been flying hard and heavy for decades though. I’m no longer interested in assigning either moral blame or moral praise- I’m merely interested in it stopping. FireBlogger on June 11, 2009 at 9:53 PM
No, it’s reprehensible filth. I’ll get off this when Letterman makes a sincere apology (about the same time my daughter, now 27, gets the pony she wanted when she was six.)
massrighty on June 11, 2009 at 9:55 PM
How’s this for hateful rhetoric? Hispanics have earned the Congressional Medal of Honor more often than any other ethnicity – and for that we should all be duly proud. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina – it was a flood of Mexican workers who went in and braved the toxic and unsafe conditions to rebuild New Orleans – I know – I was there – I saw.
How’s that for hateful rhetoric? Sorry to disappoint you – but our problems with Soto have nothing to do with the fact that’s she’s female – or Hispanic – it has everything to do with certain comments on racial superiority that it seems she made – but we’re still willing to see what her excuse for those are.
And women?
I doubt you’ll find many people here who don’t hold Condoleza Rice in anything but the highest regard. Can the same be said of your side? Hmmmm?
And let’s talk about daughters – how come we evil mean spirited Conservatives have given Joe Biden’s daughter a pass when she was videotaped snorting cocaine and complaining that the line wasn’t long enough?
Know of any Conservative jokes made about the Obama girls? Nope.
But we know your side always resorts to these tactics. You wanted Dick Cheney to be assassinated – even made movies about Bush being assassinated. Classy.
If mean-spiritedness didn’t keep your side from winning last election – I doubt it will hinder the GOP’s win next year. Especially since anyone who can fog a mirror that doesn’t have a (D) next to his name will be able to be elected – and quite easily so after the damage the Dems are doing.

First I was pleasantly shocked that NOW correctly criticized Letterman’s disgusting comments.
But of course they couldn’t leave it at that. They had to lie about Rush.
As some have already posted on pages 1 and 2 RUSH NEVER CALLED CHELSEA A DOG.
http://lyingliar.com/?p=17
When I read it I remembered the incident faintly and when I looked it up, it all came back to me. It was a mistake that the audience responded to as a joke. Rush clearly apologized and felt bad.
He is a gentleman and to be compared to the dirty old man (Letterman) is another smear at conservatives.
Later, Rush did comment on leaving Chelsea alone, per the link above:
It is worth noting that, interestingly, there was an incident– in 1993– where Rush did discuss Chelsea Clinton’s appearance. Here’s what he said:
You know, she’s [Hillary Clinton] got an interview out in Redbook magazine that just came out this week. And in it she says that she thinks it’s very childish of shows like “Saturday Night Live” to make fun of Chelsea. And I agree. I mean, I don’t think you should take shots at a little kid, especially the way a little kid looks and… Well, they do it on “Saturday Night Live” and they’re really mean and vicious about it. And I think that it’s worth pointing out that the liberals who run “Saturday Night Live” are the ones doing that. They always say that people like me make fun of the way people look, and we haven’t done that; and-and so she [Hillary] talks about that…

For my entire LIFE the left has been bigoted and sexist and crude to the right – don’t give me any parity crap, just do the right thing and you’ll find we have more common ground than you thought.
That whole last paragraph just sounds like an excuse to me, sort of a “BUT we don’t really mean it!”
Merovign on June 11, 2009 at 10:12 PM
Wow, color me shocked! But good for them. I hadn’t ever heard the “White House dog” comment but Rush should be properly admonished for saying it. I enjoy Rush and find him immensely entertaining most of the time, but he DOES push the envelope. Fortunately, the good outweighs the bad for me where he is concerned so I keep listening. I do remember that SNL used to do sketches early on in the Clinton administration where they made fun of Chelsea’s looks. I’m no fan of the Clintons, but I always found those sketches to be particularly obnoxious. Making fun of a 12 year old girl’s appearance is not funny.
I can agree, AP, that we should also be vigilant for sexism leveled at liberal women too. It was actually the outrageous manner in which Hillary was treated by the media and the Obama campaign last year that really changed my mind about her. I still loathe her politics, but she has my utmost respect for how she weathered all of the sexist attacks and how she refused to back down and drop out of the race until the last vote was counted. It’s not necessary, anyway, to resort to bashing how these women look, how they dress, etc. There are so many substantive things to criticize them for that the size of their biceps, or the quality of their pantsuits is really inconsequential. Actually I think any kind of sexualizing of women politicians, whether in a positive or negative way, diminishes them as serious candidates. I think Gov. Palin is a very attractive woman, and I can see her appeal for men on our side, but referring to her as “hot” is not all that helpful either, even though I know it’s meant in only the most flattering way. I think we all need to focus less on her looks and her red pumps and more on her accomplishments and where she stands on substantive issues.

No, everyone should be treated the same…man or woman…with respect. Until we all decide that satire and ridicule of public figures are not part of our society, this is something that will be acceptable. If it’s okay to make fun of Joe Biden’s hair transplant or Rush’s double chin, or Obama’s big ears, then women who choose to be in public life should expect the same ridicule. There are some lines that have to be drawn though, and Letterman crossed that by bringing in the family, particularly children, who did not choose the spotlight and cannot respond on equal terms.

Just want to see what this Southerngal has to offer, comedicwise that is.
I’m sure when she goes to her KKK meetings, they have a real blast.
Maybe she even has some great rape comedy.
