Oh my: NOW inducts Letterman into its “Media Hall of Shame”

posted at 8:25 pm on June 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Credit where credit’s due.

Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.

The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days — it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin’s “slutty flight attendant look” — yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician’s appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman’s stature, who appears on what used to be known as “the Tiffany Network” (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer.

On that point, it’s important to note that when Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old she was the target of numerous insults based on her appearance. Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the “White House dog.” NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren’t professed conservatives.

People on Twitter are grumbling about that last paragraph but (a) given how peeved the sisterhood will be that they’re defending Palin, surely you won’t begrudge NOW some sort of ass-covering knock on conservatives here, and (b) their point is, unfortunately, too often valid, as a scroll through righty blog comments about Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton (at least before 2008) will attest. A compromise, then: The right will join in calling out sexism directed at liberal women when the left stops treating conservative women as “inauthentic” or traitors to their gender because they happen to be pro-life. Deal?

Meanwhile, Michael Steele hints at a boycott of Letterman’s show. Really? Even an awful joke is still a joke. I think the PR beating he’s taking is enough.

Update (Ed): Since NOW has been good enough to put principle above politics, then I can do the same by agreeing that conservative pundits should leave menstruation out of their criticisms of Sonia Sotomayor.  If we complain about the belittling and sexualizing of conservative women in politics, then G. Gordon Liddy should stick to the substantive issues in the Sotomayor nomination.  I hadn’t heard about that one until I clicked over to NOW’s site.

Don’t kid yourelves. NOW wasn’t defending Palin. They were defending little girls and drug in the “women as objects” mantra.

Where were they when Slick Willy was dissin’ women. No support. And where were they when Palin was degraded time and time again.

I do applaud their statement, but I still don’t trust them.

OT—

Where is this news at Allah:

Historic Agreement Moves AGIA Forward Governor Applauds Private-Sector Alignment

June 11, 2009, Dallas, Texas – TransCanada Corporation and ExxonMobil announced today they have reached terms on a gas pipeline development agreement. TransCanada and ExxonMobil have agreed to work together to progress the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA) Gas Pipeline Project.

AGIA was created as a commercial vehicle for advancing the Alaska gas pipeline project through the first stages of development of what will be the largest private energy project in the world. “In a volatile world with growing energy needs, the time is now to develop Alaska’s valuable resource for the environment, economy and national security,” Governor Palin said. She further described this historic announcement as “very encouraging and exciting, but certainly no surprise, because AGIA was crafted to allow just this type of commercial alignment to take place.”

For the State of Alaska and Alaskans, the owners of the North Slope’s world-class hydrocarbon resources, this event represents progress on this long lead-time project. Once construction begins, Alaska will experience economic growth not seen in over a generation, including potentially thousands of jobs created through construction of an open-access pipeline, as well as significant revenues generated from the production and sale of the gas.

Governor Palin said, “The Legislature voted in support of AGIA and subsequently supported issuing TransCanada the AGIA License because the legislators recognized the importance of this investment to our state’s economic future. AGIA and its ‘must haves’ protect the value of the resources that belong to all Alaskans. Of course, we recognize that this step is not the end of the AGIA process, but it is the natural evolution for a project of this magnitude.” Wednesday in Dallas, Governor Palin met with Hal Kvisle, TransCanada president, and Rich Kruger, president of ExxonMobil Production Company, to discuss the proposed alignment. Governor Palin said, “The meeting not only confirmed TransCanada’s commitment to the AGIA License, but also ExxonMobil’s commitment to continue to advance the Alaska Gasline project with TransCanada, including as additional alignments are reached with other stakeholders.” For TransCanada and ExxonMobil, the alignment provides a mutual benefit by bringing together the key skills of two world-class companies to effectively advance a project of maximum value and mutual benefit. For other producer and explorer companies, this project ensures their discovered resources can be transported to market, and at the lowest reasonable transportation cost. For America, this announcement means an affordable and clean source of energy is on its way and that, as a nation, we are much closer to domestic energy independence. “ExxonMobil recognizes that the State of Alaska has set a course for commercializing the North Slope’s trillions of cubic feet of known natural gas reserves,” the governor said. “By recognizing the value of Alaska’s relationship with TransCanada, ExxonMobil has made a strategic decision that I believe makes good sense. Alaskans will also be pleased to know that TransCanada’s obligations to the state as the AGIA licensee are 100 percent intact and unaltered by this alignment with ExxonMobil,” a fact that was echoed by Kvisle. AGIA involved an open and competitive bidding process and resulted in granting a license to TransCanada to move the project forward through one or more Open Seasons and eventual FERC certification. By providing matching funds during the risky development phase of this project, the state has secured commitments from TransCanada to conduct an Open Season by 2010.

The mandated commercial provisions of the AGIA License also protect the long-term interests of the state by ensuring that pipeline transportation tariffs will remain low. This will protect the “net back” value of the state’s natural gas, which will provide Alaska’s economic base for future generations. These same provisions guarantee that new gas discoveries will be provided access to the pipeline and that any expansions of the pipeline will not result in tariffs that unduly burden new explorers for gas. The next major milestone in the AGIA process is the 2010 Open Season, slated to begin sometime in the second quarter of 2010. The regulatory, design, engineering and cost work leading up to this, and the feedback received in the form of commitments made, will play an important role in continuing the progress made to date.

AGIA Facts:

* Governor Palin introduced Alaskans to AGIA in January 2007, promising swift movement to get Alaska’s gas to market.
* Alaska legislators passed AGIA 58 to 1 in May 2007.
* Five entities expressed interest in applying for the AGIA license to proceed with specific commitments from the State of Alaska.
* Private-sector competition created by AGIA encouraged another pipeline project, Denali, to begin down another path to bring Alaska’s gas to market.
* Alaska legislators awarded the AGIA license to TC Alaska in August 2008.
* TransCanada pre-filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in May 2009.
* When built, the natural gas pipeline is expected to carry roughly 4 bcf/day, supplying up to 8 percent of the United States’ annual consumption.
* TransCanada is a leader in developing and operating energy infrastructure in North America.
* ExxonMobil is the largest publicly traded international oil and gas company.

The Obama White House knew she was going to have this great accomplishment this week so it would not surprise me if Axelrod called Letterman and said we need something really egregious to really make conservatives mad and get lots of air time so that no one, not even that great conservative site Hot Air, will report on the TransCanada Exxon natural gas line to supply to the lower 48 and give us just a little more energy independence.

jgapinoy on June 11, 2009 at 9:07 PM

This has nothing to do with women. The attack on Palin was not because she is a woman, but that she is a female conservative, emphasis on conservative. We should not applaud anything that NOW does for they do what they do for reasons of gender politics. Conservatives are not supposed to play that game. If they defend Palin only because she is a woman, and not because a decent conservative figure was maligned in a crude way, then they have learned nothing, and if we applaud them for this, then we too have learned nothing.

Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the “White House dog.” NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren’t professed conservatives.

NOW seems to have been in a situation where they risked becoming laughable (though I think they are anyways) if they didn’t stand up for an American woman and her children who were being verbally abused and assaulted, but they could not resist throwing in the little jab and reminder that Rush did it years ago and that conservatives ought to keep up the good work and “join” them in their righteous fight against sexism.

Please, give me a break.

4shoes on June 11, 2009 at 9:08 PM

Limbaugh allegedly calling her daughter ugly is nowhere in the same ballpark as Letterman calling a 14 YO a whore (Spitzer) or joking about her being raped in the dugout of Yankee Stadium while her (bad) mother (the slutty flight attendant) is watching the game.

Yeah, he screwed up with Palin and her daughters, but I don’t think it’s fair to declare him a monster given his 25 years on TV without any such controversy. I mean how come nobody goes after guys like Howard Stern who spew sexist garbage on a daily basis? So the regular offenders get a free pass, but the non-offenders who screw up once get all the vitriol?

Having said that, let me be clear: I think the joke on Palin’s daughter was in poor taste. Letterman still needs to man up and give a real apology.

As long as Michelle keeps her mouth shut in public and sticks to causes such as the arts, she’s OK with me.(not great mind you,but acceptable)If she comes on strong again as she did during the campaign, she’ll be fair game, but as things stand now–I think any criticisms should be mild or funny(like the Onion)—at least that’s the direction I’m going to take.

This is more of the moral equivalency crap. It’s OK for Letterman to do it, because we can find similar (but not equivalent) examples, if we but search hard enough, from the other side.

It’s not OK;
By this logic, there’s no limit to what can be said – no line that can’t be crossed – because “someone else did something else, that’s a little like this, because I said so.”

massrighty on June 11, 2009 at 9:16 PM

Upstater85 on June 11, 2009 at 9:18 PM

It only took three days for NOW to be shamed into condemning Letterman’s creepiness.

The degree of their eagerness to uphold their stated ideals is belated and measured. I think that’s how I’ll parcel out any credit I give them.

Thanks for that clarifcation of Rush and Chelsea story. Obviously most of the “rememberings” from some of the commentors are also flawed. The White House dog comment did not seem to familiar to me and that was about the time that I had first discovered Rush. I do remember the flap, but it was Rush that was actually supporting Chelsea from the cruel Saturday Night Live skit. Rush understands about hate mail, ad hominim attatcks and Liberals. He understood then and he absolutly gets it now. He apologized profusely for the mistake of his crew and took on the mistake as his. He is a gentleman. Can’t say that for a lot of people here and in the media.

Actually, wasn’t. I was just putting it out there. I thought what he said was a lot harsher than what Rush Limbaugh did on his TV show. I have no idea how McCain was able to escape that comment so cleanly, whereas others have been tied to their dumb comments.

Please tell me I am taking your words incorrectly…

The line in the sand that you and Letterman don’t seem to see is when you say something like

“I’d like to hate f**k (fill in blank with your female hero).”

it is intrinsically violent. Stating that Hillary has cankles or Condi has a gap in her teeth is not violent – even if there are cruel intentions.

That is true, and I find those types of comments to be execrable. However, in the real world (i.e. not hyper-partisan echo chambers in the blogosphere), I find that conservatives treat women with far more respect than liberals do. That includes NOW, which for example doesn’t show any respect for a woman’s right to choose to be a stay-at-home mother.

The hypocrisy is on all sides, I assure you. Sexism, racism, and all the isms in the world aren’t exclusive to any group. That’s why people should challenge it when they see it, no matter if it comes from friend or foe. In the end, it’s up to the individual to change their behavior and ways of thinking. You nor I have any control over that. Influence, maybe. But no control. Making these “isms” a political thing does a disservice to these pervasive problems.

EarthToZoey on June 11, 2009 at 9:25 PM

Oh, and as others have pointed out, this Rush example NOW so sanctimoniously throws out there is yet another case of smear and distortion.

dieudonne on June 11, 2009 at 9:24 PM

I suppose it’s violent if you want to inflict mental anger (assuming Hillary was reading such comments).

I should clarify. Physical violence. Wishing someone dead or grave injury is not cool or even funny. It’s not even a joke at that point.

Upstater85 on June 11, 2009 at 9:25 PM

Re: allahpundit’s update regarding Sotomayor and menstruation. I was about to post that I agree with NOW on that subject. Until I happened to notice the headline on their site, “Glenn Beck Objects to Nomination of “Hispanic Chick Lady”, and clicked on it.

And was greeted with “right-wing radio blowhard”. I also noticed that Chris Matthews made their Media Hall of Shame – minus any descriptive insult as pertains to his being a liberal.

I can agree that dissing Sotomayor in regards to menstruation is sexist and wrong, but in general…

NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren’t professed conservatives.

…NOW can continue to kiss my right-wing blowhard ass as long as they continue to sling partisan dirt in their quest for “equality”.

Not so much, no. I think Letterman’s comments were despicable because I have two daughters and would hate to see them subjected to the sort of ‘jokes’ that preening jerk told.

As for my earlier comment, I’ve decided you’re less Pauline Kael and more Bill “Rush only stood up for Reno because she was being attacked by a black guy” Clinton. Seems more apt.

Slublog on June 11, 2009 at 9:26 PM

dieudonne on June 11, 2009 at 9:24 PM

Again, it streches credulity to try to legitimize a vile, despicable comment by finding other comments that have some element of cruelty in them, and saying “these are the same, because I said so.”

massrighty on June 11, 2009 at 9:27 PM

The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days — it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves.

Alright,I will give them credit where credit is due.

The best I can muster up is a shrug and a nod their way because this is pretty light in the “outrage” department considering the close to a year of sexist, bigoted, sick commentary and actions directed toward Palin and her family.

When I start seeing the feminist on TV,radio, and other media outlets blasting the hateful ways that Palin,Prejean, and Malkin are treated by the “tolerant, open minded liberals” without having to make disclaimers about conservatives that don’t even apply to this, then I will start to take feminist seriously.

This belated baby step in no way, shape, or form shows that feminist are for the rights of “all” women and not just for the political gain of liberals.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry. Let me tell you very quickly what happened last Friday night. There was a new in list and new out list that was published in the newspaper. The writer said in, cute kid in the White House; out, cute dog in the White House. Could we show the cute dog in the White House who’s out, and they put up a picture of Chelsea Clinton back in the crew. And many of you people think that we did it on purpose to make a cheap comment on her appearance. And I’m terribly sorry. I don’t–look, that takes no talent whatsoever and I have a lot of talent. I don’t need to get laughs by commenting on people’s looks, especially a young child who’s done nothing wrong. I mean, she can’t control the way she looks. And we really–we do not–we do not do that on this kind of show. So put a picture up of her now and so we can square this.”

“All right. We’re sorry. We didn’t intend to hurt her feelings. We’ll be back with our final segment right after this. Don’t go away.”
