Oh my: NOW inducts Letterman into its “Media Hall of Shame”

Comedians in search of a laugh should really know better than to snicker about men having sex with teenage girls (or young women) less than half their age.
The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days — it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin’s “slutty flight attendant look” — yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician’s appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men. Someone of Letterman’s stature, who appears on what used to be known as “the Tiffany Network” (CBS), should be above wallowing in the juvenile, sexist mud that other comedians and broadcasters seem to prefer.
On that point, it’s important to note that when Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old she was the target of numerous insults based on her appearance. Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the “White House dog.” NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren’t professed conservatives.
People on Twitter are grumbling about that last paragraph but (a) given how peeved the sisterhood will be that they’re defending Palin, surely you won’t begrudge NOW some sort of ass-covering knock on conservatives here, and (b) their point is, unfortunately, too often valid, as a scroll through righty blog comments about Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton (at least before 2008) will attest. A compromise, then: The right will join in calling out sexism directed at liberal women when the left stops treating conservative women as “inauthentic” or traitors to their gender because they happen to be pro-life. Deal?
Meanwhile, Michael Steele hints at a boycott of Letterman’s show. Really? Even an awful joke is still a joke. I think the PR beating he’s taking is enough.
Update (Ed): Since NOW has been good enough to put principle above politics, then I can do the same by agreeing that conservative pundits should leave menstruation out of their criticisms of Sonia Sotomayor. If we complain about the belittling and sexualizing of conservative women in politics, then G. Gordon Liddy should stick to the substantive issues in the Sotomayor nomination. I hadn’t heard about that one until I clicked over to NOW’s site.

Michelle O and Hillary Clinton are adult public figures. Willow, Bristol (barely an adult), and Chelsea (at the time) are non-public children.
There is no comparison between joking about Michelle and joking about Willow.

Limbaugh apologized. He didn’t “clarify” by saying he actually meant Hillary. And he didn’t bring sexual assault into it. Other than that, the two are directly parallel.
By the way:

I do take some issue with the criticism of Rush calling Chelsea a dog because I vaguely recall seeing it when it happened (on his TV show), and my memory of it suggests that it didn’t quite happen the way the Left wants people to think it did. In fact, it really might have been unintended.
Nonetheless, Rush apologized, sincerely and personally to Hillary Clinton.
Letterman demonstrated last night that he isn’t capable of anything that decent.

doriangrey on June 11, 2009 at 8:35 PM
I’ve always had a problem with calling Hillary “Cankles” or Michelle Obama “Worf.” These are appearance-based insults, and using them makes conservatives hypocrites. Attack their politics — they give you plenty of ammo. If an elected official’s adult family member inserts themselves into politics, they’re fair game for criticism on their political statements.
While it’s true that, despite “cankles” style comments from the right, we treated Hillary better than her own party did during the primaries, it still doesn’t raise the level of political discourse to focus on her appearance rather than her politics.
First time I’ve ever defended NOW. I feel dirty.

Ok, I’ll give NOW credit that they finally made a statement about the abuse the Palin women and girls are getting. But it got seriously diminished when they used it as an opportunity to chastise conservatives and something that Rush did freaking years ago!!! It’s pretty telling when they have to go back that far for a lame example to hold up in comparison to what the Palins have been experiencing!

cozmo on June 11, 2009 at 8:41 PM
This is a clear CYA for NOW. If they don’t condemn this, then their complaints about vulgar comments directed at women they actually like will draw warranted accusations of hypocrisy.
Erich66 on June 11, 2009 at 8:41 PM
Deal.
I, personally (just my opinion), think that Steele needs to not initiatea boycott. If he wants to make a statement, then do it. And I am all for every other Republican doing the same. They can even join any boycott that arises. But no, I don’t think the RNC Chair should hijack something that began with the people and is even, dare I say it, somewhat bi-partisan (much like the Tea Parties.) Support, but don’t lead, in this case. Again, just my opinion. I would boycott him if I watched him in the first place. The best I can do is keep emailing and saying I will not be supporting any business that supports Letterman.

HornetSting on June 11, 2009 at 8:42 PM
There’s no way to know for sure. This is what happened, to the best of my recollection:
It was during Rush’s television program. Rush was doing jokes accompanied by onscreen images. He started a joke about the Clinton’s getting a new dog, and a picture of Chelsea was flashed onscreen.
The audience responded badly to it, and Rush claimed that it was a mistake, that it was supposed to be a picture of Buddy. They then showed the picture of Buddy and went on with the show.
I don’t know. The show wasn’t live, so if it wasn’t intentional they probably shouldn’t have let it go out like that. They probably should have retaped the segment.
Nonetheless, he apologized publicly and also privately to Hillary Clinton in person (whom he happened to encounter in NY shortly thereafter).
Given that making fun of the children of politicians isn’t part of Rush’s shtick and this appears to be an isolated incident that hasn’t re-occurred in the last sixteen years, I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Kensington on June 11, 2009 at 8:42 PM

anniekc on June 11, 2009 at 8:46 PM
I remember something along those lines. It happened – I think – on the first edition of Rush’s TV show.
If memory serves, he was discussing White House dogs and a photo of Chelsea came up. The audience laughed and oohed, but he acted as if it had been a mistake (it looked like a mistake to me, but I wasn’t quite so cynical back in ‘92). Then they put up the correct photo.

CWforFreedom on June 11, 2009 at 8:47 PM
As I pointed out in my blog yesterday, this is the only comparable example of a conservative slamming a teen daughter of a liberal. Rush repeatedly apologized, but he was severely chastised, & it still comes up from time to time. Letterman hasn’t apologized, & the issue will probably drop from sight soon because he’s a lib picking on a conservative family.

Rush’s shot at Chelsea came on the heels of Saturday Night Live making fun of her looks, so in late ‘92-early ‘93 it was seen as an easy target for jokes by people who didn’t take into account the 13-year-old’s feelings.
On the other hand, with this condemnation of Letterman, NOW is officially to the right of Kathleen Parker on this issue. I’ll bet she’s so proud.

I’ve been listening to Rush since 1988, and I watched his TV show. Okay, he didn’t say it outright, but he implied it heavily.
