Kim to celebrate UNSC resolution with a bang

How does a repressive, narcissistic dictator handle the spotlight of a UN Security Council scolding?  He celebrates it with a bang — in fact, several of them.  Fox reports exclusively that Kim has four responses ready for tomorrow if the UNSC approves yet another strongly-worded memo over his intransigence:

U.S. intelligence officials have warned President Obama and other senior American officials that North Korea intends to respond to the passage of a U.N. Security Council resolution this week — condemning the communist country for its recent nuclear and ballistic missile tests — with another nuclear test, FOX News has learned.

What’s more, Pyongyang’s next nuclear detonation is but one of four planned actions the Central Intelligence Agency has learned, through sources inside North Korea, that the regime of Kim Jong-Il intends to take — but not announce — once the Security Council resolution is officially passed, likely on Friday.

The other three actions include the reprocessing of all of the North’s spent plutonium fuel rods into weapons-grade plutonium; a major escalation in the North’s uranium-enrichment program; and the launching of another Taepodong-2 intercontinental ballistic missile from the Yunsong military complex on the west coast of North Korea. The North last launched a Taepodong-2 on April 5; it conducted its second nuclear test in the last three years on Memorial Day.

The intelligence community only learned of North Korea’s plans this week, prompting CIA to alert senior officials. Asked who would be briefed on this kind of data, a source told FOX News: “The top people: POTUS, DNI.” “POTUS” is acronym for the president of the United States; “DNI” refers to the director of the Office of National Intelligence.

It looks as if we have at least a few hours to get our assets in place near the Korean peninsula.  If Obama really wanted to send a message, he would use a Taepodong launch as an opportunity to test the US missile defense system, as a response to Kim Jong-Il’s belligerence.  A successful hit would underscore the point that we can defang Kim in other ways, if he wants to keep pressing the point.

I’d assume, though, that even this four-stage “celebration” won’t get enough of a rise out of China, Russia, or Barack Obama, for that matter.  We’d be lucky to get four strongly-worded memos out of it.

CWforFreedom on June 11, 2009 at 7:19 PM

There have been nothing but strongly worded memos from the UN since the start and all along NK’s threat has grown more and more severe. I think it was old Billy boy who got him started with money and equipment to get those reactors up and running in the first place.
Once a nuke lands on LA we should round him and Halfbright up and stick them into Gitmo. Chamberlin’s weakness brought us 100 million dead – WW III could be 1 billion

dpierson on June 11, 2009 at 7:20 PM

With Obama in charge I have no doubt that any Navy SM3 counter missile would miss its target.

elduende on June 11, 2009 at 7:20 PM

But that would hurt our standings in the race to be the wussiest country in the world.

Why don’t we just tell Iran that North Korea is Jewish and let them take care of it?

Spiritk9 on June 11, 2009 at 7:23 PM

A very very sternly worded message is being written at the moment. Perhaps a video with an Obama finger wag will accompany it to P’yongyang.

Other than that…what’d ya expect?

We’ve actually been successful in past years dealing with North Korea…but none of it was allowed to play out in the press, and not to this extent as we have seen over the past many months. It is like feeding a troll on a blog site. So long as Kim Chong-il gets the impression that the world is paying attention to him, he derives power far in excess of North Korea’s military and political means. Our aims were met, and North Korea wasn’t publicly humiliated in the process.

China is the key to all of this. get them on board…we can make Kim Chong-il a pariah in his own country. It may have to take a major humanitarian disaster to get there, but the other alternative, going to war, will cause a lot more of a humanitarian disaster.

Fighting a war with North Korea wouldn’t be easy, but it would be easier than it was 5o years ago. KCI doesn’t enjoy total support from his people, either, but they have no means to do anything other than set themselves up to get killed or sent to socialist re-education camps. sometimes for life. Less than 1% of the population controls the other 99%. Makes things a bit more hopeful once the hammer comes down, and whole neighborhoods set aside fore the elites and all the major Korean Workers Party and Korean Peoples Army installation are reduced to ash.

However, getting China on board…with their present opinion of the Administration, seems to be a pipe dream at the moment.

This is just lil’Kim’s way of complaining that Obama hasn’t visited his country to apologize for America and American arrogance yet. Lil’Kim is feeling he’s been dissed and he doesn’t like being left until last in line.

Meanwhile Obama was heard to say: “Sheesh, I’m going as fast as I can! Tell him I’ll move his apology up to July 4th as long as he doesn’t invade the South.”

Fatal on June 11, 2009 at 7:48 PM

Hmmm. So the strategy seems to be to detonate all of the inefficient nuclear prototypes (Iranian/AQ Kahn design)too heavy to launch, and use up all of the barely fissionable material. Next construct perfected weapons (lighter) and produce more enriched material (to reach higher yields).

What about the missile tests? The biggest obstacle is whether they can handle the weight of NoKorean nukes. Have we examined the wreckage to see if they are launching refrigerators?

It sounds to me like the program is complete.

Agrippa2k on June 11, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Agrippa2k on June 11, 2009 at 9:49 PM

North Korea is still relying on liquid fueled rockets. That is a detriment.

Iran, however, is working on some very good solid fuel designs. Much better from an offensive military point of view.

Less run-up to launch time with solid fueled rockets, as opposed to between four days to a week and a half, looking at NK’s most recent launches. From a military perspective these would thus be “seen” long before they were launched.
