Kathleen Parker: Palin kind of asked for those nasty Letterman jokes, didn’t she?

posted at 4:45 pm on June 11, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Gateway Pundit, an uncannily similar reprise of Bonnie Erbe’s shot at Michelle, with Parker in the Erbe role and Palin standing in for MM. Yes indeed, says Parker, Letterman’s “slutty flight attendant” joke was over the line. But that’s what Palin gets for winking at Rich Lowry during her VP debate with Biden or something:

[Question]: Listen, Letterman is a comedian. Comedians that don’t go over the line are not funny. If you said she looks slutty, that’s over the line. If I say it, it’s over the line. Why wouldn’t Letterman say it – have you been on a plane?

Kathleen Parker: I don’t have a problem with raunchy humor, but time and place are everything. In a nightclub, fine. But Letterman is sort of an American institution. It just seems to me that when a woman is running for public office, we should avoid sexualizing her.

Okay, I censored myself before so I’ll say it now. I also think it’s out of line for a woman to sexualize her candidacy, which Palin did. Just ask Rich Lowry, who wrote that he had to sit up a little straighter when she winked during the vp debate. So, maybe when you play the flirt and invite males to see starbursts bouncing off the walls (Lowry again), then maybe you invite the sexual punchline. I’m wobbling here.

Yes, surely Palin winking at a debate eight months ago is what Letterman was aiming at with the “slut” joke, not the combination of her being young, beautiful, and an ignorant low-class hick as caricatured by the intelligentsia. She asked for it. Go collect your feminist merit badge, Kathleen.

To cleanse the palate of Parker’s bile, I’ll give you a choice of sorbets: Claire McCaskill defending Palin on Twitter; Jim Treacher taking off the gloves against Letterman in the Greenroom; or the boss on Fox & Friends this morning fitting this incident neatly into the liberal-sexism oeuvre.

Blowback

Yes, Kirsten Powers is a PRO-LIFE CONSERVATIVE. Whats wrong, don’t you even read your own website. Powers “came out” during a session of “The Vent”, which doesn’t seem to be up and running any more. She’s a conservative, not a liberal. Hence the only reason she was allowed to debate on Fox. I.e. she’s a pushover.

That you seriously believe that Kirsten Powers is a conservative shows how truly ignorant you are.

Palin should have never accepted McCain’s invitation to be his VP candidate with all of the issues her family was facing at the time, from Bristol’s illegitimate pregnancy to the recent birth of her Down’s Syndrome child. She acted irresponsibly.

2Brave2Bscared on June 11, 2009 at 5:16 PM

How’s that? Because she should have known that the broadly accepted principle that candidate’s families are out of bounds would not be honored in her case, and only in her case?

Conservatives need to STOP playing defense and start OFFENDING in return.

Here’s a start:

Michelle Obama has the face of a horse with the body of a weeble wobble and the fashion since of a preschooler. Expand it a little with quips about Tierra, Malia, and Sasha and you can have some upapolagetic tit for tat.

I seem to recall that the big wink during the debate came when Palin was addressing an elementary school class. I could be wrong – anyone else remember?

CK MacLeod on June 11, 2009 at 4:57 PM

Moments before she was speaking of her mom and dad being school teachers, and winked at them in the audience as she mentioned them.

Nothing more than that.

But of course, the majority of liberals aren’t capable of discerning the truth even when slapped in the face with it, and found that friendly wink to her own family distasteful and unprofessional. Unable to comprehend that one could exude such warmth and affection towards one’s own family during a debate, the liberals decided she was ‘flirting’ – an idea that soon morphed into calling her out for her slutty ways.

Every day, it becomes more and more clear that those who claim themselves to be a liberal do indeed suffer from a debilitating mental illness.

Oh it’s still Sarah’s fault. That is a really stupid argument. She deserves the right to run for anything she wants to, just like everybody else. It is the responsibility of our media personalities to behave with some sort of class, but I suppose that is too much to ask of them. Sarah Palin is going to turn this around on Letterman, and she will come out just fine. Wait and see.

Brian1972 on June 11, 2009 at 5:22 PM

The reason there are no liberals on air to debate Malkin is because she doesn’t want to debate them and Fox doesn’t want to host them. Malkin can’t win, so she doesn’t play the game.

I would agree that in most cases and situations, a candidate’s family should be left out of the process. However, when you have a Republican running on a pro family values platform, Bristol’s situation was more than relevant.

And let’s not forget that Palin pushed her family to the forefront quite a bit during the campaign. Numerous times she had both Bristol and her then boyfriend appearing on stage with her, as if they were all family. As if illegitimacy is no big deal. As if illegitimacy should be celebrated.

The responsible thing to have done was keep the boyfriend out of it at least until the two were married. Of course, as it turns out, that whole marriage promise was nothing but politics.

She deserves the right to run for anything she wants to, just like everybody else.

Used to be a lot of commedians much funnier that Letterman could ever hope to be who did not ‘go over the line’. Bill Cosby was mentioned above, Lucille Ball, Red Skelton just to name the ones that pop into my head quickly. These and their counterparts were a lot funnier than Letterman and you could actually let the kids listen to them without fear. But the question is not did she have a right to run for VP, but rather was it right for her to do so in light of her family situation? Do you see the difference here?

2Brave2Bscared on June 11, 2009 at 5:40 PM

Stupid liberal? Me? oh that’s rich!

Damn straight it was right for her to run when asked by the Republican nominee!
McCain knew all about all of this and asked her anyway, because she is a very talented speaker, and has a ton of intangible appeal.
She rocks the house, and she is a solid conservative who can relate to most of the Republican base, because she is the base.

You think all of the Republican voting families out there who vote have kids that are perfect? Hell no they don’t!
A whole lot of them are in the same situation the Palins are in.

This idea that Sarah Palin should be singled out for exemption to all the unwritten rules of campaign coverage followed for decades is just infuriating!

Appeals to rights are stupid. I suppose the Bill of Rights is stupid x 10.

Brian1972 on June 11, 2009 at 5:52 PM

Actually, this post has nothing whatsoever to do with my logic.
2Brave2Bscared on June 11, 2009 at 5:46 PM

It has everything to do with it. Your Shoulda Coulda Woulda BS logic is ridiculous.

Are you a moron?

I’ve been accused before. But you prove it without a doubt.

Did you happen to eat lead paint chips as a child?

Letterman may look like a pervert and talk like a pervert but don’t let that fool you. He really is a pervert.

MB4 on June 11, 2009 at 5:53 PM

Parker should be completely ashamed of herself. First, if someone had joked about one of her children in a “sexualizing,” way, I wonder if she’d be fine with it – that is, as long as it was in a night club. Further, she’s assuming that Letterman was actually trying to be humorous. Hey, he may have decided he just wanted to bat at a women today.

Secondly, a “conservative,” referring to Letterman as an American institution? OK… This seems wrong on more than 1 level.

Finally, before we know it, Parker will be saying that rape victims were inviting it because they were wearing short skirts. Parker, there are many countries that agree with you. Why don’t you move there and try to write your beloved columns.

Upstater85 on June 11, 2009 at 5:53 PM

You’re on the right track. Beat the hell out of them and shove their face in it. The point is to do what you can do to the best of your ability (i.e. keep holding conservative values)

Where does “insult the president’s wife” fit into conservative principles, exactly?

MadisonConservative on June 11, 2009 at 5:53 PM

portlandon,

Barry had/has the “right” to run for president, but was it right for him to run in the first place, given his pushing Hope and Change incessantly during the campaign? ;p

Insulting Michelle? Well who’d do that, I kind of enjoy having James Brown back with us.

ddrintn on June 11, 2009 at 5:56 PM

I think David Letterman is going to go the way of Dan Rather because of this.
.
He didn’t apologize when the ugliness of his words was made evident to him, in the same way Rather refused (still refuses?) to admit his work was a fraud.
.
I can’t see him squirming out of it or getting it off his back–much less having the nerve to knock Palin again.

Matushka on June 11, 2009 at 5:56 PM

Parker is an extraordinarily sick woman. She perpetuates the stereotype that women should “know their place” and shouldn’t bring abuse on themselves. Disgusting.

Erich66 on June 11, 2009 at 5:57 PM

So Kathleen Parker thinks Gov. Palin deserves demeaning, sexist remarks because she “sexed up” her campaign. I wonder if KP bothered to attend one of Palin’s events. I did, with my oldest daughter. The governor dressed modestly and acted like a lady. Didn’t noticed anything “sexed up” about the event. KP is one insecure woman.

Parker’s comments are reminiscent of ones uttered by Bobby Knight years ago. And the media clobbered him for it.

In addition to Letterman, I’ll keep my daughters away from Parker. No need for her bad influence on their lives too.

This is the same stupid liberal argument used to drag everyone’s family through the mud. The media descended on Alaska to dig up dirt on her and found nothing. SO her family is not perfect – that makes her more like the average American and not less.
I’ll take her version of a family over the nihilistic, urban dwelling, sissy democrat, 1 child carbon neutral family any day.

dpierson on June 11, 2009 at 5:59 PM

Go collect your feminist merit badge, Kathleen.

I vote that HA and other conservative blogs stop referring to her stupidity. Can we get a show of hands? Let her try to sell her swill to the left. They have enough unattractive, bitter women over there. parker will just fade away if we stop paying attention andd furthermore, stop paying money for any sources where she is published. Is she even in NR anymore? Let’s help the bitter, nasty dried up harpy go away.

Parker on Tingles Show

He asked “is it good for her to be this high profile?” She responds. “They responded in a very sophisticated way, very political way by saying that not only were the comments inappropriate but, they are typical of that Hollywood, New York, you know sort of elitist… group of people who don’t understand mainstream America. SarahPac has probably raised $500k this afternoon”.

Chissy goes on to prove he’s got a tingle up his 3rd leg for Sarah. He KNOWS she is the only one that can knock down Obama.

CTSherman on June 11, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Who gives a crap about Kathleen Parker? Honestly who reads her columns? She’s irrelevant. If she wasn’t wanted of the token Palin hating “conservatives” that came out during the election, I wouldn’t have a clue as to who she is…

That’s the mindless stupid liberal “hypocrisy” rule. If a conservative takes a stand and anyone related to them in anyway is involved in the issue, they becme hipocrites. It’s just stupid and I’m assuming that you aren’t a propagandist for the left, who know it’s stupid and use it because stupid poeple will accept it. That would make you one of the stupid people.

For the sake argument, I assume Obama was also running on pro family values (he is against gay marriage, etc).

Why then, isn’t it relevant to bring up the fact that his own brother has been banned from entering the UK on child molestation charges?

Or maybe Obama openly ran on “anti” family values?

Norwegian on June 11, 2009 at 6:02 PM

You might think that by Kathleen Parker’s own reasoning, it’s okay to call her a slut and make sex jokes about her kids. But it’s not, because she isn’t as attractive as Sarah Palin.
