Video: Ziegler gets his mike cut off by MS-NBC
posted at 1:15 pm on June 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
If you want to see irony in action, watch as the “tingle up the leg” and the “Obama is sort of like God” network challenge John Ziegler on his credibility. Contessa Brewer doesn’t want to actually talk about the subject – David Letterman’s two attacks on Palin’s 14-year-old daughter – but wants to make the interview about Ziegler instead. John has his own idea about what he wants to say, which is when Brewer demands that his mike get silenced:
RealClearPolitics reports (from John) that MS-NBC pulled a bait-and-switch on him. Norah O’Donnell was supposed to be his interviewer, who has interviewed John in the past. For some reason, they threw Brewer at him, who clearly wanted to keep John on a tight leash. Brewer had no interest in talking about the topic at hand (Letterman), but in trying to zing Palin and John’s interview of her.
I’d call this red meat for everyone. The Left can cheer Brewer for her manhandling of Ziegler, while the rest of us can point out that (a) everyone at MS-NBC knows that Ziegler criticizes their coverage every chance he gets, and (b) they invited him, and not the other way around.
Besides, MS-NBC is the absolutely last media organization that can level charges of “cheerleading” at anyone else in the industry. Have they canned Evan Thomas for calling Obama “sort of God” or Chris Matthews for his “tingle up my leg”? When they do that, then Contessa Brewer can sniff at John Ziegler for a lack of journalistic objectivity.
Update: On a related note, Tommy Christopher rips David Letterman:
There’s a whole lot of justified outrage going on about David Letterman’s recent attacks on Sarah Palin and her 14 year-old daughter. There really is no denunciation strong enough for these attacks, which are in many ways more egregious than the Guy Cimbalo “Hate F*** List” that Playboy and Politico took down.
Letterman’s attacks were made in an exponentially larger, broader forum, and included the statutory rape of a minor child. They cannot be taken down or redacted.
But he also makes a good point here:
There are some who would try to hang Letterman’s attack on “the Left.” I’ll get to “the Left” in a minute, but Letterman is no more a liberal, in the political “team sports” sense of the word, than Guy Cimbalo is. They are not conservatives, but they are also basically apolitical. Their words are owned by a popular culture that is hostile to conservatism, but also to liberal ideals (of feminism as well as others). They are a third column.
The attacks aren’t coming from “the Left”, but the silence certainly is. Read all of Tommy’s post.
Update: Like some commenters, I’m particularly amused at Brewer’s offense at Ziegler’s claims of bias, but her lack of outrage over the personal attacks on a 14-year-old girl. Stay classy, Contessa!

I see nothing “irritating” about beating the opposition at their own game. There is no way that any conservative uprising will take place while those with the sharpest minds just sit on their thumbs. I think it is ridiculous that one would think otherwise.

David Letterman isn’t a leftist? Really? How many jokes has he made about Obama’s kids?
Of course liberals let the fact that David Letterman is an admitted pedophile detract from the fact that he’s also a rabid racist. But, trust me; there’s no way in Hell they’d be doing that if he were also “apolitical.”

This is not the way to win elections. It turns off the middle of the country. Before you go off half-cocked, understand that on general principle, it is not okay to make sex jokes about underage kids.

The animosity towards Palin on General Electric Media is all about her promoting more real energy policies ( oil ) that are unfriendly to General Electric’s windmill and other pretend energy investments. She is costing GE money.

She considers herself a “common sense thinker”, but needs to have someone explain to her why Palin might take offense to someone joking that her daughter should be raped.
Classy indeed.
And someone on MSNBC has the nerve to ask if someone had any tough questions for Palin? They can’t even ask tough questions of a low life like Garafalo.

This is what people missed that triggered the “Contessa is fair game” reaction of Rush and others in the thread. Contessa is a public figure who basically volunteered to be called slutty once again to prove a point it was no big deal to her, take the heat off of Letterman and make the slut tag stick with Palin and her daughter. Anyone know if Contessa did a segment on the “hate f#@&” controversy and claimed that it was just a harmless fantasy in order to take the pressure off of Playboy? Don’t forget there was a fresh climate of violent sexual conservative hatred as comedy that existed when Letterman’s writers decided to join in. Their response to the Playboy controversy was to drag the Palin family down into the muck to rhetorically hate f#@& all the females.
As for Sasha and Malia jokes: Don’t go there. These girls are not the daughters of Sarah Palin. Unless Andrew Sullivan investigates and conclusively proves that Sarah was a surrogate mother who birthed the Obama children, Barack’s daughters are strictly off-limits.

The fact that you use ‘Jesus’ as a exclamation is enough for me, but let me enlighten you.
First of all, I am not an assclown. I am actually afraid of clowns and I’m not into asses, so that proves that point.
Second of all, I am not stupid.
Third of all, we tried your way last time, 82. We sat on our hands, we allowed the media, the left to attack us at will, take their shots and we just laughed it off. We allowed a lame, dusty rino, to tell us to shut up and sit down and allow the left, obama to attack us because obama was historic. We were not allowed to question obama’s heritage, we were not allowed to use his middle name, we were not allowed to question ANYTHING that this messiah said. We were to take it as gospel and move on.
We were not allowed to fight back.
Now, we have a country that we hardly recognize. We have the government’s fingers in every orafice of our lives. Our economy is in shambles and GUESS WHAT, obama is now apologizing to our enemies, giving the finger to our allies, and yes, guess what……….obama IS muslim and he uses this for political expediency in the middle east, while bowing to the Saudi king.
We tried it YOUR WAY, we were nice and we laughed off the attacks from the left……BUT NO MORE! I WILL NOT BE QUIET, I WILL NOT SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP ANYMORE! I WILL NOT ALLOW THE LEFT TO LOB BOMBS WHILE I JUST LAUGH IT OFF ANYMORE!
So, you shut the (*$#& up and sit down, I will fight for this great country!

I don’t care how long you’ve been here.
I just signed up two days ago, and I know stupidity that plays into Democratic hands when I see it. I’ve been in campaigns. I know some of what works, and some of what doesn’t. I saw Jeb Bush blow a sure lead to Lawton Chiles in 1994 because he broadcast an over-the-top negative ad against Walkin’ Lawton in 1994. Abetting sexual remarks against the Obama children is both childish and wrong, and plays into the hands of the enemy.
I agree with Jeff Goldstein on not letting the Left domingate the Language, but there is such a thing as not being stupid.
What was posted above about the Obama kids, even though it was in jest and a parody of what was said about Palin’s child, and I get that, was abusive and wrong. We can’t be conservatives and go there.

You also shouldn’t bring a knife to a gunfight. I’d certainly prefer that public discourse were more civil. But the left has no intention of being civil. They’re more than happy to slander Palin, or any other conservative else who might capture the public’s attention. Day after day, painting Rush as a fat old drug user, they eventually plant that seed in the public consciousness. Day after day, they portray the GOP as the party that hates blacks, and steals from the poor. Day after day, they slander Palin, Ann Coulter, and any other woman who dares to be conservative.
It’s time our response was a little more biting than “tut tut, that’s not cricket”.
For that matter, calling Contessa a slut is clearly not an insult. She herself takes no offense at it. If she honestly believes that, then it’s not a problem. If she was saying that to provide cover for those who attack Palin, then maybe living with the label for a few months will help her see the error of her ways. If she were to say “you know what, I was wrong. Insults ARE hurtful.” I would gladly accept her apology and offer my own.

The problem is that the “Schools of Journalism” have been teaching since the early 60″s that it is the Journalist’s responsibility to not just give facts but to also apply the correct interpretation to those facts. Why? Americans are to dumb to properly interpret the facts.
Given the above, we don’t have a free press and arguing over the duty of a free press is pointless.

I do agree, keep the children out. What Letterman did was deplorable and what Brewer did by supporting Letterman is equally despicable and she should be called to account for that.
One of the more important debates that we on the right side are having now is: Do we still take the high road and go with Marquess of Queensbury rules as we have been while the libs continue their slash and burn attacks or do we finally take the gloves off. I think a couple of quotes from a classic movie, 1943′s “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp”, are especially appropriate here:
Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff: You know that, after the war, we had very bad years in germany. We got poorer and poorer. Every day retired officers or schoolteachers were caught shoplifting. Money lost its value, the price of everything rose except of human beings. We read in the newspapers that the after-war years were bad everywhere, that crime was increasing and that honest citizens were having a hard job to put the gangsters in jail. Well in Germany, the gangsters finally succeeded in putting the honest citizens in jail.
And this more lengthy and I think more pertinent quote:
Clive Candy: I often thought, a fellow like me dies – special knowledge, all to waste. Well, am I dead? Does my knowledge count for nothing, eh? Experience? Skill? You tell me!
Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff: It is a different knowledge they need now, Clive. The enemy is different, so you have to be different, too.
Clive Candy: Are you mad? I know what war is!
Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff: I don’t agree.
Clive Candy: You…!
Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff: I read your broadcast up to the point where you describe the collapse of France. You commented on Nazi methods–foul fighting, bombing refugees, machine-gunning hospitals, lifeboats, lightships, bailed-out pilots–by saying that you despised them, that you would be ashamed to fight on their side and that you would sooner accept defeat than victory if it could only be won by those methods.
Clive Candy: So I would!
Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff: Clive! If you let yourself be defeated by them, just because you are too fair to hit back the same way they hit at you, there won’t be any methods *but* Nazi methods! If you preach the Rules of the Game while they use every foul and filthy trick against you, they will laugh at you! They’ll think you’re weak, decadent! I thought so myself in 1919!
Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff: [he pats Clive's shoulder] You mustn’t mind me, an old alien, saying all this. But who can describe hydrophobia better than one who has been bitten – and is now immune.
Matt Helm on June 10, 2009 at 2:43 PM

Everyone seems to be afraid of Palin, including most Republicans. Could it be because she would actually bring the change our country so desperately needs – common sense, stronger respect for states rights, energy independence, and a return to true fiscal conservatism. And as far as Brewer goes, she is illustrating what is typical in high schools across the USA – jealousy of another female who has her act together and attains a level of power women continue to fight to achieve.

So will I, but there’s a smart way and a dumb way to do it. What “max” did above was stupid and wrong. It’s like beating registered voters with kids away with a stick. It’s like running Hitler for Mayor of Jerusalem.
You can’t really believe that making sexual jokes about Sasha and Malia Obama are lead-pipe cinch vote-getters.
You want to fight back? Take a page from what the Palins did today. Look at their statement. Did they get personal? No. Did they make jokes aboud Dave’s illegitimate child? No. Did they snark about Dave’s somewhat ordinary looking wife?
No. Look at the statement. They smartly mentioned David’s age and the fact that Willow was underage and connected it to Hollywood and New York being out of touch. Then, they connected Willow to the whole Missing and Abused Children’s movement.
It was masterful in its restrained, targeted outrage, and that’s the way it should be done! Palin avoided getting into a personal fight with Dave because she understood that he was pimping for ratings. She made it about principle and issues.
On that ground, two parents protecting their daughter, she wins and they lose.
Never, ever, ever, EVER, put the Republican Party in the position where it is seen to be attacking the Obama kids. WE WILL ALWAYS LOSE THAT FIGHT!
I don’t care if Michelle wants to take up pole dancing-please leave the kids out of this. Going there is suicidal.
I understand your anger at what has been written and said about the Palin children. But there is a right way to do this, and Sarah is in the process of doing it the right way.

The popular culture is not “opposed to feminism”.
It is opposed to the abuses that many so called feminists make in the name of feminism. But that is an entirely different subject.
MarkTheGreat on June 10, 2009 at 2:49 PM
The reason why turning the situation around is sometimes useful is because it is the most direct and easiest way to expose the hypocrisy. If a “joke” about a high profile democrat politician’s underage daughter being raped or being a prostitute is outside the lines, then so is a joke about Sarah Palin’s underage daughter. That’s a simple enough concept for even idiots like Letterman and his writers to comprehend. If they nonetheless go ahead with the “joke” on the Republican’s daughter, then it’s obvious to all but those who don’t want to know the truth that there is an agenda at work here. “He’s just trying to be funny” doesn’t cut it when we’re talking about raping children.

Okay, O’Reilly. That will work, right? France is still a country and they are still surrendering, didn’t do much good, that boycott.
Yeah, those types of things work for race hustlers like Jesse Jackson and Rev. Sharpton. If you don’t realize, genius, those types of things work when you have the ear of the left leaning state run media.
Oh, and I don’t talk out of my ass. Wow, Allah is scraping the bottom of the barrel for fresh blood……

Playing by rules of decorum produced John McCain as a candidate for President. We are now suffering through the results of that.
kingsjester on June 10, 2009 at 2:54 PM
I agree that conservatives need to be fearless and aggressive in confronting media bias and holding Democrats/liberals accountable. Bush tried to simply ignore the media and to use Fox and the WSJ to promote his views. As a result, he ended up leaving office as the least popular president in history. But what I am saying is that shouting “Contessa is a slut!!” is not an effective tactic. It’s a Derangement Syndrome.
Clinton Derangement Syndrome hurt the GOP; Bush Derangement Syndrome hurt the Democrats in 2004; I guarantee you that Obama Derangement Syndrome will crush the Republicans now. We need to keep away from the nasty personal attacks and the venom and stick to constantly barraging them with substantive criticism.
Outlander on June 10, 2009 at 2:55 PM
I never suggested that. By all means tear them apart.
But, by this time tomorrow, there will be more debate about the commentors at HA saying bad things about Michelle Obama, and her daughters, than there will be about what brought it on. There will be no mention about the Obama remarks being an example, only that it was made.
And calling some dingbat news gal a slut is too easy and was old a week after Dan Akroyd first used it.
An ignorant waste of otherwise useful stem cells who wouldn’t know an unbiased question it admitted to being one while threatening to sexually assault her during the seventh inning stretch of a Yankee’s game. Her description to police afterwards would be that “it had to be a conservative, its something only they do”.

You know why contessa has her naval pierced? It’s a handy spot to hang the air freshener. The woman has a minger. see definition #3
Definition #4 works pretty well also. Now all we need is to get her insulted on national TV and watch her response.
csdeven on June 10, 2009 at 2:56 PM
The amazing thing to me is Brewer’s focus on Palin being called “slutty” by Letterman, and in her mind Palin should get over it because even she had been called that publicly. So, because she has been referred to in that way, makes it okay for people to call Palin that? I contend, that had Letterman referred to another female politician who was left-leaning in the same way, Brewer would have had an absolute fit.
She did not even seem to be fazed by Palin’s 14 year old daughter being insulted. This child is under age, and totally off limits. But again, the double standard applies; what is off limits for Obama’s girls, is probably not off limits for a conservative’s children. This did not used to be the case, but since George Bush was elected, the left have so much hate for anyone who thinks differently, that even children are game.
It seems as of late, that the creeps have come out of the woodwork, and are not hesitant about saying anything, about anyone, who disagrees with them politically. Apparently they feel empowered by Obama’s election.

Whoah, check this out:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mike-sargent/2009/05/12/contessa-brewer-calls-carrie-prejean-hater
Seems hating on conservative women is nothing new for Brewer. Seems to be a job requirement for a job at MSNBC.
Rebar on June 10, 2009 at 2:57 PM
Of course Palin gave a polite response. As would Obama, if the tables were turned.
But Obama would also have the press corps issue a blistering attack at the offending party, and smear them with every possible smear, and investigate their taxes. The liberal response to annoyance is overwhelming force. And that approach has gotten them to where they are today.
Now, the typical GOP response has been to send any offending member into exile, lest they be accused of harboring [insert insult here]. How has that worked out for us? Seems like we’re getting more milquetoast, and less backbone, from our party leaders.

And, how much newsplay will that get? The state run media will make a crack about Sarah and move on.
You are dryhumping ONE COMMENT here, O’Reilly. ONE COMMENT. That comment got your attention, didn’t it? It made you think, didn’t it?
Now, shoo fly, don’t bother me. Shoo fly, don’t bother me.

I’m interested in winning elections for conservative candidates.
You’re interested in banging the table and, perhaps, really believe that making sexual jokes about underage kids is both wise and smart. You don’t win by bringing the kids into the equation. This is one of the oldest rules in politics.
Why is this hard for you to understand?
You either want to win or you don’t. You win by being smart. You lose by being stupid.
David Gergen, by the way, never got this, which is why he hasn’t worked for a Republican since he left the Reagan White House.
Please don’t expect me to back off on this just because you are angry about the Palins. They are doing fine and are winning the battle by playing it smart!
In the end, Sarah will come out of this dustup stronger with the rank and file, and stronger with the money people in D.C. because of the professional and brutally effective way she reacted to Letterman’s taunts about her daughter.
victor82 on June 10, 2009 at 3:00 PM
hahaha, she said “cut the mic” because there’s truth in what he’s saying but she’s too far gone with the left to even begin to be able to speak honestly about it. try to debate a lefty and they just want to cut the mic.
thedude on June 10, 2009 at 3:01 PM
Referencing Ogabe’s kids makes me cringe, but I won’t decry the tactic because I know you must sometimes highlight absurdity by being absurd. If the libs (or you squishy Republicans) don’t like it, they shouldn’t start it. Telling us not to go there is telling us to bring a wiffle bat to a knife fight. I’m sick to death of the double standard. Try directing your fire at the real target.
SKYFOX on June 10, 2009 at 3:01 PM
Hardly. Bush just barely managed a win when he should have sailed through. It was thanks to the Swift Boat Vets and to Kerry’s idiotic determination to call for surrender in Iraq that saved Bush in ’04. The left’s hate of Bush never hurt them one little bit.
No. The idiotic need to apologize to barbarians for everything is what kills Republicans. No one respects people who have no convictions and are happy to prostrate themselves anytime someone claims “offense”. People know why many consider The Precedent a danger to America, which is infinitely more than can be said about the left’s emotion-driven (and politically driven) outrage at everything.

If you want to defeat this disastrous administration, go get a copy of Alinsky’s “Rulebook for Radicals” and read it. I started reading it last night: the very first paragraph is about the Haves and Have Nots. The word Change is all over the place. If you are not careful you might think you are reading an Obama speech. It is scary accurate.
Read the book. To know your enemy is to defeat him.

With all this back and forth over getting personal, not getting personal, I’m wondering how much effect, if any, you all think our comments here will have on life outside the blogosphere. Are we maybe making too much of this?
I agree that the official position should follow the lines of the Palin response…take the high road…be adults and all that. But guys, this is just a blog. One of many. If you look around you’ll find MUCH worse comments on other websites, both conservative and liberal. We might get a little wound up now and then, but I think Allah and Ed do a pretty good job of keeping things clean here.

Do you have any idea how stupid you sound. You come on here insulting posters and telling how and what to think. Your welcome to it but your going to have to expect a little return fire. If you want sweetness and mild manners try Michaele Medved’s show.
I am calling you david Geregen because I am insulting you not as a compliment
It doesn’t make any diferrence how someone wants the world to be. It is like it is, you have to deal with reality and the reality is politics in the u.s.a is a bloodsport.
On TV, on the internet, on the radio and in person.
The tea partys were called racist for no apparent reason and did you ever hear any left wing outfit worry about fairness or not.
They just got through trying to take O’reilly out because some guy shot tiller and before that it was Michelle Bauchamn and before that it was Sarah palin and before that it was Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter and on and on and on it goes.
And then there is you defending some hack on MSNBC.

Compare and contrast.
What gets Contessa Brewer upset?
a). a female politician getting called a slut.
b). having her network called classless.
