Video: Ziegler gets his mike cut off by MS-NBC
posted at 1:15 pm on June 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
If you want to see irony in action, watch as the “tingle up the leg” and the “Obama is sort of like God” network challenge John Ziegler on his credibility. Contessa Brewer doesn’t want to actually talk about the subject – David Letterman’s two attacks on Palin’s 14-year-old daughter – but wants to make the interview about Ziegler instead. John has his own idea about what he wants to say, which is when Brewer demands that his mike get silenced:
RealClearPolitics reports (from John) that MS-NBC pulled a bait-and-switch on him. Norah O’Donnell was supposed to be his interviewer, who has interviewed John in the past. For some reason, they threw Brewer at him, who clearly wanted to keep John on a tight leash. Brewer had no interest in talking about the topic at hand (Letterman), but in trying to zing Palin and John’s interview of her.
I’d call this red meat for everyone. The Left can cheer Brewer for her manhandling of Ziegler, while the rest of us can point out that (a) everyone at MS-NBC knows that Ziegler criticizes their coverage every chance he gets, and (b) they invited him, and not the other way around.
Besides, MS-NBC is the absolutely last media organization that can level charges of “cheerleading” at anyone else in the industry. Have they canned Evan Thomas for calling Obama “sort of God” or Chris Matthews for his “tingle up my leg”? When they do that, then Contessa Brewer can sniff at John Ziegler for a lack of journalistic objectivity.
Update: On a related note, Tommy Christopher rips David Letterman:
There’s a whole lot of justified outrage going on about David Letterman’s recent attacks on Sarah Palin and her 14 year-old daughter. There really is no denunciation strong enough for these attacks, which are in many ways more egregious than the Guy Cimbalo “Hate F*** List” that Playboy and Politico took down.
Letterman’s attacks were made in an exponentially larger, broader forum, and included the statutory rape of a minor child. They cannot be taken down or redacted.
But he also makes a good point here:
There are some who would try to hang Letterman’s attack on “the Left.” I’ll get to “the Left” in a minute, but Letterman is no more a liberal, in the political “team sports” sense of the word, than Guy Cimbalo is. They are not conservatives, but they are also basically apolitical. Their words are owned by a popular culture that is hostile to conservatism, but also to liberal ideals (of feminism as well as others). They are a third column.
The attacks aren’t coming from “the Left”, but the silence certainly is. Read all of Tommy’s post.
Update: Like some commenters, I’m particularly amused at Brewer’s offense at Ziegler’s claims of bias, but her lack of outrage over the personal attacks on a 14-year-old girl. Stay classy, Contessa!

Just to be safe, we shouldn’t call her a skank. It’s hard to tell with liberal feminists. But we know it’s ok to call her a slut.
hawksruleva on June 10, 2009 at 1:39 PM
No. Look. It’s not okay to call Contessa Brewer a slut because she’s NOT a slut.
She’s a biased, narrow-minded, opinionated woman, but she’s not a slut.
victor82 on June 10, 2009 at 1:39 PM
Why does a male have to come to aid of Sarah Palin? That’s an insult to women everywhere that they might need men to come “fight their battles”. Is that what you’re implying?
LastRick on June 10, 2009 at 1:40 PM
I wasn’t writing earlier TO Sarah Palin, I was writing TO someone here in the comments who was complaining, “where are the men” in regards defending Palin.
I don’t and wouldn’t ever expect Palin or any other woman to be “a big girl,” but to be an adult.
Lourdes on June 10, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Quick call the WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAbulance for Con-tessa. This is Letterman’s pathetic attempt to boost his ratings and is just p*ssed off because HE doesn’t want to even hate f*ck his new wife…Sarah Palin on the other hand…he’ld think about.

So according to Contessa Brewer, it’s fair game to call a prominent female politician “slutty” and to joke about her 14 year-old daughter getting impregnanted by a member of the NY Yankees.
I’ll remember that next time someone makes a comment about Hillary Clinton or Sasha Obama and the left goes berserk.

jeff_from_mpls on June 10, 2009 at 1:41 PM
I called CBS moveenes at 212 975 4321 and spoke to a nice Lady and ask her how she would feel if I called her child a Hooker?
Then I suggested that if moveenes really cares about his brand that he suspend letterman for ten days without pay and wash his mouth with soap.Have not watched CBS in years and can see that it will be a long time before I do. Maybe others have numbers for sponsors and displeasure can be expressed. Both SOB’s also needs to offer a complete and honest apology.

This is one of the best things I’ve seen in awhile. He chewed her up and spit her out. Ziegler hit a home run!

My point exactly.

She actually got a degree in journalism from a decent journo school-the one at Syracuse University.
I have driven thru her hometown many times-it’s a tiny hamlet called Parsonfield, right on Maine’s border with NH. I’ll give her credit for that much, getting out of such a dead-end location.
Del Dolemonte on June 10, 2009 at 1:42 PM
My point here, earlier, exactly. The area to address here is among those who complain about Republicans when/if Palin’s “attacked” — instead of doing something about the attackers (we ought to focus attention on the source not on the nebulous ‘others’ that someone complains about perhaps being absent, which they aren’t in reality).
Lourdes on June 10, 2009 at 1:42 PM
One of Ziegler’s better interviews. I normally cringe when he’s on, due to the fact that although the guy is sharp, he’s also zippy as a coke fiend.
Brewer’s command to cut his mike at the end was facepalmingly catty.
MadisonConservative on June 10, 2009 at 1:42 PM
HAHA the end was glorious! After suggesting that Palin shouldn’t be insulted by a rape joke about her 14 year old daughter, she claims to be “insulted” by what Ziegler stated about MSNBC! Holy sh-t…..

How do you know she’s not a slut? It’s up to her to prove the accusation false. That’s the standard Palin is held to.

You are 100% correct! Remember when a comment was made about Hillary pimping Chelsea out, during the campaing? Everyone went ballistic over that. But when it’s Palin, or her child, then it’s fair game….and she should stay out of politics, if she can’t take the heat.
What an utter bunch of b.s. here, and I’m frankly sick of it. If Letterman is indeed apolitical, then he’d best be fair, and hurl a few immature, demeaning comments , or jokes in the direction of the Obama girls.
capejasmine on June 10, 2009 at 1:46 PM

Letterman has two things going on – he’s already been on his way out for years. His demographic is watching comedy central. Two, Conan, who just took Leno’s spot, is going to take whatever is left. So, he’s either trying desperately to attract a Sarah-hating, Obama-loving audience or have a ready made excuse for losing his audience. It wasn’t that he got beat by Conan, it was because he dissed Sarah. The only way to beat things like this is financially. Someone has to whip up a boycott of Letterman’s sponsors.

My guess is she will never admit it, but she knows how stupid she sounded by whining about that “insult”. LOL
thin skinned…
ladyingray on June 10, 2009 at 1:47 PM
Of course, I didn’t mean she wasn’t really valid. I meant the press attack on her will ignore the issue and focus on how she has no “right” to speak up for her own kid.
It’s just sexism. It permeates. What frustrates me is that the left-leaning press truly does take progressive attitudes on some issues, which I find appealing.
Howevever, with women? I honestly don’t see much progress since my own youth, in the 1950′s.
I really don’t.
Anyway, this is just my own “bee in my bonnet.”
I should have been born a blue-stocking girl. *haha

V15J on June 10, 2009 at 1:48 PM
I have three things to say here:
(1) Obviously Letterman is a pervert. That is not news, and neither is it news that the Left does not mind as long as his targets are conservative women and girls.
(2) All you people who are retaliating in kind toward Contessa Brewer should shut up. This is unacceptable toward any woman, even if she thinks it’s ok.
(3) Malkin and Morissey bear some responsibility for these comments if they don’t step in and start banning people. I am beginning to agree with O’Reilly on this: it’s not just a single buried comment in this thread; the venom is everywhere.
Gaunilon on June 10, 2009 at 1:48 PM

AnninCA on June 10, 2009 at 1:48 PM
But what he’s doing is not effective. He’s just snarking at them and picking fights, which just makes him look bad and reduces his credibility. Ann Coulter of late has done a GREAT job at challenging bias. If someone asks her a loaded question (“isn’t it a big risk for Republicans to challenge a latina justice?”), she “flips” it on them (“wasn’t it a bigger risk for Democrats to filibuster Miguel Estrada specifically because they didn’t want Republicans to appoint the first latino to the court?”). That response is unexpected and puts the interviewer on the defensive–which is what you want.
A few people have done that to O’Reilly and he usually responds by shouting and waving his arms. But, when he does that, you know you’ve beaten him.
Outlander on June 10, 2009 at 1:49 PM
Let’s just call her “the Slutty Contessa”
hawksruleva on June 10, 2009 at 1:38 PM
How ’bout “the Barebottom Contessa”, sort of like the chef, but always ready for a rendezvous eh, um, interview.
Laura in Maryland on June 10, 2009 at 1:50 PM
The thing about that is, Chelsea was an adult at the time and willingly campaigned for her mother. She put herself in that position. She made the choice.
Palin’s 14 yr old daughter didn’t ask for any of this. That’s what makes Letterman’s comments all the more descpicable.
UltimateBob on June 10, 2009 at 1:50 PM
That’s pretty much the exact opposite of the truth. It is true that details of Letterman’s specific ideology are unknown–he could be anything from a Democrat moderate to a full-blown Marxist. But it’s absolutely clear that he is a unrelenting Democrat partisan, every bit in the political “team sports” sense. “Leftist” actually suggests an ideology; there is no “team sports” aspect to it. It’s the Parties–Democrat or Republican–that bring out the “team sports.” Whatever the specifics of his personal beliefs, Letterman is a relentless Democrat shill.
Blacklake on June 10, 2009 at 1:50 PM
To Goodsamaritan: Zeigler goes on a station that thinks he is one of the Republican cretins: point Zeigler. Zeigler goes on with the interview even though they switched interviewres on him: point Zeigler. Contessa tries to guide Zeigler into area where she thinks she will trip him up and Zeigler resists (much to her consterrnation): point Zeigler. Contessa is controlling and rude to Zeigler and he maintains fairly well: point Zeigler. Contessa screeches for his mic to be shut off: point Zeigler.
Ziegler went into the lions den and came out OK. I can only imagine Franken or Garofalo or some such character going on a balanced news program for this type of treatment.

I think you will find that there are more people than you realize that admire her defense of Willow. American culture seems to often admire the underdog in a fight. The more Palin is unreasonably bashed by the media and celebs, the more sympathy she will gain from the so-called “flyover” people.

So you actually prefer that the free press injects their OPINION and SPIN and ATTITUDE on what should be objective reporting? That stands against every principle upon which this nation was founded. So when you read 1984 you cheered for Big Brother?
Don’t bother to answer. It was a rhetorical question.
Geochelone on June 10, 2009 at 1:55 PM

You can call Contessa a slutty stewardist and say her daughter got knocked-up during a 7th inning stretch and have a yuk-yuk of a time. But say that MS-NBC is a joke of a network in its slanted coverage, and she really throws a tissy fit.
gonnjos on June 10, 2009 at 1:56 PM
I hope so. The electorate gets a lot right, in my opinion, so I hope you’re right.
I don’t even think Palin is really ready to be president. Heck, I can’t picture myself voting for her. She’s probably way too conservative for me.
But darn it, she deserves to be treated respectfully and allowed to go as far as she can go.
This is just not right what’s being done to her.
And I mean by McCain, too. I’m furious with his treatment of her.
She infused his flipping bellyflop of a campaign.
And he treated her badly at the end.
I’m glad he lost.

hoosiermama on June 10, 2009 at 1:56 PM
I agree. The quality of the comments reflect on the Hotair community as a whole, and Malkin, Allah, and Morrissey in particular. The venom is inappropriate. Ziegler went on that show with his dukes up, provoked a fight, and got a fight. To respond with vicious personal attacks on an MSNBC personality is unbecoming and distracts from the central point — that MSNBC is intellectually dishonest and that its programming bears no reasonable relationship to “news” or journalism.
Outlander on June 10, 2009 at 1:56 PM

You know, I’m seeing a lot of hall monitors here, names that I don’t recognize, telling us to pipe down and stop throwing around comments. Now, we are still living in the United States of America and we are still free. It looks like the brown shirts have infiltrated.
Some of the comments are harsh, but they are opinions of the person that is on the bottom of the comment. I don’t want my comments being monitored to make sure Bill O’Reilly isn’t offended! This is the problem today, we have to play by the rules while everyone else can call our people and their children sluts and what not. We, like our troops and law enforcement, have our hands tied behind our backs while the enemy, both foreign and domestic, have NO RULES.
If it offends, don’t read it, but don’t be a brown shirt. We are still free. For now.

I totally agree with you. My point was, that there was an explosive outrage at the comment about pimping. Yet nothing, from anyone publicly, to scorn these comments. That makes me angry. I would never attack the Obama girls, just like I’d never attack Palins children. It’s wrong, low, distasteful, and just shows the low brow character of a person, that engages in this, or condones it.
capejasmine on June 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM
Exactly!!
This was the first thing I came away with was the typical selective moralism and outrage that liberals come up with when defending their own bigotry and hatred while at the same time getting offended by the least little thing that upsets them.
It’s great to know that you can make any kind of crude, sexist, bigoted remark you want about anybody as long as it is in the name of comedy.
Need to keep a record of all of this liberal defense in the name of comedy so that the next time Obama’s middle name comes up or somebody is called a “nappy headed hoe” we can remind the liberals to get over it in the name of comedy.

Over a hundred and fifty comments in less than an hour on this thread. They would have to spend all of their time moderating to keep up.

Yeah, you know… John Ziegler is just not helping.
Sorry, but he comes off as immature, evasive, and simply obnoxious.
I say be as civil as you can, but blow them out of the water with smart, rational arguments. Give examples, be respectful, and give no ground.
Ziegler just came off as irritating.

Also I farked up the message

It’d have been interesting to have polled the 2.4 people watching this thing live for their reaction.

I have three words for you:
1. Olbermann. 2. Matthews. 3. Maddow.
HornetSting on June 10, 2009 at 2:14 PM
Are you saying we need to play according to the Media’s double standard? I’d rather hold the opposition accountable to their own rules. If Brewer doesn’t have a problem insulting Palin, then I don’t have a problem insulting Brewer.
As long as the libs like to play rough, we should play rough in our reaction. Your higher moral ground stance is a recipe for losing. That’s how we lose people like Trent Lott, while Charlie Rangel chairs a committee. And on a broader level, it’s why we can’t beat militant Islam. You don’t win a fight without getting and giving a few bruises. Half-measures make for weak results.

What a coincidence!

Getalife did the same thing, in Haiku form.

Coffee: $2
Tailored Suit : $500
Cab Fare to MSNBC studio: $30
Watching the interviewer go from vapid and vacuous to meltdown: Priceless

How can anyone claim Letterman is not on the left? He has bashed conservatives non-stop for years and was crappy to McCain and got a stiffy over Obambi.
Blake on June 10, 2009 at 2:18 PM
…it must be said that Mr. Z was being rather one-note, and rather in-your-face about MSNBC in general, and by implication up in the interviewer’s face in particular….
Contessa (who seems to think that this isn’t just her name, but is her birthright), was also very clearly trying to steer the interview…and Mr. Z wasn’t being steered….
…it would seem that Ms. B needs a browse through any dictionary at hand, zooming in on the word “guest”…he wasn’t giving the answer from the script, so she might’ve spared a thought for maybe moving with him, not just trying to bitch-slap him back “on topic”…that’s just rude….
…and, I don’t think that Ms. B’s been very seriously dissed in the past, in the manner that Gov. Palin and her family’ve been slimed…after all, who’s Ms. B when she’s at home? Who’s ever really heard of her? With what would seem to be all the right points of view (implied by her position as a talking suit at MSNBC), wouldn’t she either be protected or dismissed as not really harmful to anyone?
This does show the difference between the opinion-masquerading-as-news on the left and the opinion-masquerading-as-news on the right…on the right, it’s mean but full-blooded…on the left, it’s childish, peevish and bitchy when it doesn’t get its way….

Ziegler, really got to her. Great job John.
kahall on June 10, 2009 at 2:18 PM
I love it when Liberals pull out the moral equivalency:
“But, but, I’ve been called a slut too!”
Next time John ask her when and where. However the “on Letterman?” comment was a nice comeback.
Ed,
I’m not sure the left has much to cheer about in this clip, she certainly didn’t reign in Ziegler, but instead gave us example 3,987,231 of liberal hypocrisy.
smfoushee on June 10, 2009 at 2:18 PM
All I have to say very simply is that Brewer is a joke. I love how when Ziegler asks her, as a woman, how she would feel about being called slutty and having her daughter attacked on national television – she says, it’s happened to me and I’m fine, now let’s change the subject.
The bias is so blatent, they almost aren’t trying to hide it anymore

I think that spelling uses the wrong vowel……

I have to question the sanity of anyone crapping on Todd Palin’s daughter in public… as well as their prospects for continued good physical health, too.
