Video: Ziegler gets his mike cut off by MS-NBC

posted at 1:15 pm on June 10, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

If you want to see irony in action, watch as the “tingle up the leg” and the “Obama is sort of like God” network challenge John Ziegler on his credibility. Contessa Brewer doesn’t want to actually talk about the subject – David Letterman’s two attacks on Palin’s 14-year-old daughter – but wants to make the interview about Ziegler instead. John has his own idea about what he wants to say, which is when Brewer demands that his mike get silenced:

RealClearPolitics reports (from John) that MS-NBC pulled a bait-and-switch on him. Norah O’Donnell was supposed to be his interviewer, who has interviewed John in the past. For some reason, they threw Brewer at him, who clearly wanted to keep John on a tight leash.  Brewer had no interest in talking about the topic at hand (Letterman), but in trying to zing Palin and John’s interview of her.

I’d call this red meat for everyone. The Left can cheer Brewer for her manhandling of Ziegler, while the rest of us can point out that (a) everyone at MS-NBC knows that Ziegler criticizes their coverage every chance he gets, and (b) they invited him, and not the other way around.

Besides, MS-NBC is the absolutely last media organization that can level charges of “cheerleading” at anyone else in the industry.  Have they canned Evan Thomas for calling Obama “sort of God” or Chris Matthews for his “tingle up my leg”?  When they do that, then Contessa Brewer can sniff at John Ziegler for a lack of journalistic objectivity.

Update: On a related note, Tommy Christopher rips David Letterman:

There’s a whole lot of justified outrage going on about David Letterman’s recent attacks on Sarah Palin and her 14 year-old daughter.  There really is no denunciation strong enough for these attacks, which are in many ways more egregious than the Guy Cimbalo “Hate F*** List” that Playboy and Politico took down.

Letterman’s attacks were made in an exponentially larger, broader forum, and included the statutory rape of a minor child.  They cannot be taken down or redacted.

But he also makes a good point here:

There are some who would try to hang Letterman’s attack on “the Left.” I’ll get to “the Left” in a minute, but Letterman is no more a liberal, in the political “team sports” sense of the word, than Guy Cimbalo is.  They are not conservatives, but they are also basically apolitical.  Their words are owned by a popular culture that is hostile to conservatism, but also to liberal ideals (of feminism as well as others).  They are a third column.

The attacks aren’t coming from “the Left”, but the silence certainly is.  Read all of Tommy’s post.

Update: Like some commenters, I’m particularly amused at Brewer’s offense at Ziegler’s claims of bias, but her lack of outrage over the personal attacks on a 14-year-old girl.  Stay classy, Contessa!

Rush is starting his second hour with a complete replay of this. Which means it will be heard by probably ten times Letterman’s audience and one-hundred times MSNBC’s audience.

Marcus on June 10, 2009 at 1:20 PM

So this whole conservative women can be called slutty and the impregnating of their daughters joked about and pontificating about the joys of hatef***ing conservative women is starting to smell like the coming of a pogrom to me.

But I am not paranoid.

I’m so done with this sexism in our culture.

AnninCA on June 10, 2009 at 1:23 PM

The silence from the left is deafening.

Replace the name Willow Palin with Malia Obama and CBS would headquarters would be on fire and Letterman would be pulled for a week.

portlandon on June 10, 2009 at 1:23 PM

I think Palin’s response to the top 10 list should’ve been something like:

“If Mr. Letterman thinks of me in this way, then I would request that both of his hands be visible the next time he makes this kind of remark about me.”

General Maximus on June 10, 2009 at 1:23 PM

-Rush Limbaugh

Marcus on June 10, 2009 at 1:24 PM

Rush just made the “joke” that Chris Matthews knocked up the slutty Contessa Brewer during a commercial break.

It had to be a joke, because Chris only has eyes for Obama.

Daggett on June 10, 2009 at 1:24 PM

They are not conservatives, but they are also basically apolitical.

Wrong. He’s anti-conservative, pro-liberal. Letterman is pro-Obama. He was very anti-McCain, anti-Palin in the election cycle.

Letterman still will not mock Obama, but wants to marginalize Palin, because as he himself says, she is “very appealing”. She must be stopped.
He is political.

Brian1972 on June 10, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Let me get this straight. The interviewer says she’s been called slutty, and doesn’t see why Palin would be offended by an insult, and then ends the interview because of an insult?

That’s classic.

hawksruleva on June 10, 2009 at 1:25 PM

“If Mr. Letterman thinks of me in this way, then I would request that both of his hands be visible the next time he makes this kind of remark about me.”

The deep sexism is that she can’t say anything. The only “valid” replies will have to be from men.

I cannot begin to tell you how that burns me up.

LastRick on June 10, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Ziegler’s on the warpath from the first second of this. He’s cynical, snide, and petty regardless of what Contessa’s agenda may be. I know he’s naturally like this, but he comes off looking like a petty, combative prick.

FAIL.

GoodSamaritan on June 10, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Mr. Grump on June 10, 2009 at 1:25 PM

Rush played this. Ziegler was awesome. Contessa could not understand why Sarah would be insulted at being called a slut or having her daughter knocked up by A-rod in Yankee stadium; but then here is the funny part, Contessa was insulted because Ziegler made fun of MSNBC.

Now Rush is saying Cris Mathews knocked up Contessa during the Commercial brake. LOL

Let’s see if I have this right. Contessa would not be insulted by being called a slut by DL, or having her daughter depicted as a whore by DL, but is wholly insulted when David insults her exalted NBC?

epluribusunum on June 10, 2009 at 1:26 PM

This is disgusting.

And I disagree with the point that Letterman is not liberal. He has always been a lefty from Indiana. But he used to avoid political matters in the same way that Johnny Carson avoided them. And so he made fun of all politicians. But that all changed with his opposition to the Iraq War where Letterman decided that the Iraq War required his response in the same way that Walter Cronkite thought it was critical for him to oppose the Vietnam War.

Once he showed his true colors, there was no going back. So he is a mouthpiece for the Left wehther the Left likes it or not.

When will some reporters start asking politicians whether Letterman speaks for them. That should be fun.

promachus on June 10, 2009 at 1:21 PM

Maybe the plan is to let Sarah Palin be “the man” in your context — what I mean by that is that if Palin’s worth the Presidency (and I think she is), then she should be managing these nasties by the Left (which are not going to go away – the Left today is truly jelling down into pure snot or slime at this rate and isn’t likely to suddenly appear looking like, say, sirloin instead)…managing these nasties by the Left herself.

She needs to and should maintain an outinfront posture about these things and many of us should try to stop asking “where are the men”. Let Sarah Palin rule if that’s what you want, is my point, and stop suggesting tears on a hanky when “the men” aren’t managing things for her.

Lourdes on June 10, 2009 at 1:27 PM

So Contessa is ok with statutory jokes about Sarah Palin’s daughter, (because she’s been joked about on national tv?) but anyone challenging her on tv gets cut off. OK, yeah, there’s a real difference there. The difference being that an adult woman can’t handle the pressure herself, but expects a 14 y.o. to handle worse.

Unbelievable, the nerve of these people to whine about FOX when they are MSDNC.

Ragspierre on June 10, 2009 at 1:30 PM

Now if FOX would only start cutting the mic when the predictable Democrat “spokesperson”s start screeching and repeating & regurgitating the same old Obama-Grog.

FOX needs to encourage more of their people to overrule the “spokespersons” because the plan seems to be to ruin any opportunity for any “other” information to be heard by the public, so the Democrats just throwup all over the airways to try to make that possible.

For someone who doesn’t mind being referred to as a slut, Norah O’Donnell takes offense and is insulted by John Ziegler saying that MS-NBS has no class as a network. I suppose it is common for sluts to be employed at MS-MBC (both male and female) but don’t dare DIS the network or you get your mike cut off. Replace the anchors with cardboard cutouts and save the money boys,

Women can’t defend themselves because it’s not “valid”?

She speaks out? It’s fodder for more criticism. She can’t “take a joke.” She wears red shoes, what does she expect?

You name it.

It is completely pathetic that it’ll be Todd’s statement that nips this. The man speaks up for his daughter.

That’ll get credible attention.

Not her defense of her daughter, mind you.

I’m too mad to be reasonable about this, btw. It just is the way it is. But that doesn’t make it right.

Contessa Brewer: “It’s happened to me publicly” (being called a slut)

Does Brewer think anyone in the public even knows who she is? I think she must be talking about her reputation in college, or something.

What a fool.

progressoverpeace on June 10, 2009 at 1:31 PM

In fairness, though, when Brewer introduced him, Ziegler started things off right away by saying “it’s always interesting to be on Barack Obama’s official network” rather than just saying “thanks for having me.” He then starts yapping about “Keith Olbermann blatantly lying” about Palin. So Ziegler was definitely looking for a battle.

I’m not into the whole “bite the hand that feeds you” thing. If he doesn’t like MSNBC, he shouldn’t agree to appear on their network. I kind of feel the same way about that CBS reporter (Natalie was it?) that used to go on Red Eye. She’d take cheap shots at Fox News’ alleged right-wing bias every time she was on.. It’s like, really??

Sarah Palin already faced the worst smears and invective of any modern politician and still has retained her confidence. She doesn’t have to prove she is a big girl.

But this isn’t about SP, it’s about a political culture in which rape of minors is an acceptable joke against political opponents. Today, they do this to Sarah, tomorrow to someone else. When Imus made his jokes, the entire Democratic party got into action. GOP must do the same now.

But they won’t because all of them want exposure given by Letterman when they go on his show.

I wouldn’t call it manhandling because that would imply she had control of the interview. She came across as a fish out of water who couldn’t control her own interview. Then let her emotions get the best of her when she asked for his mike to be cut off.

I get your point and I understand your frustration, but that’s not what you said though. You said, a defense of Palin has to come from a man to be “valid” (your word, not mine). That’s just doing the same thing the Left does: marginalizing Palin.

Now if you want to say that when it comes from Sarah Palin, it isn’t necessarily “effective” as far as changing the media theme about her, then you’d be right. But I trust the validity of her 10-fold over alot of male politicians. And I say that as a male.

Can you hear that Romney/Huck/Jindal/Pawlenty/RINO/?

I’m suggesting we all (on the Right) try to reinstate Reagan’s 11th Commandment: “Thou shalt not speak badly of other Republicans.”

One of the key aspects of how and why the Paul people so offended so many others is that they ridiculed and harassed nearly anyone/everyone else. Some people among the Palin supporters, and the Huckabee supporters, AND the Romney supporters, have done the same.

So what I think would be really helpful for us all and our nation accordingly is that we all stop speaking ill of other Republicans and start applying the force to the Left instead.

Just my two cents.

I just watched the whole clip. Believe me, I am very sympathetic to Ziegler’s cause, and he usually does a great job. But he would have been a lot more effectove without all the snark and sarcastic comments. Can’t say I blame Contessa for getting a little ticked.

Could that new radio show be going to his head a little?

UltimateBob on June 10, 2009 at 1:38 PM

Seriously, her first name is really CONTESSA? When she was citing some sort of poll, I thought she was talking about the “pole” she used to dance around. *shakes head*

Contessa. C U next Tuesday! Hee Hee.
Info-Skank of MSNBC.

I don’t know who this Brewer woman is, but it’s clear she’s an amateur.

D2Boston on June 10, 2009 at 1:38 PM

Let’s just call her “the Slutty Contessa” from now on. She has no problems with it, and seems to prefer that to us questioning MSNBC’s standards.

My guess is that, like some other pissy on-air talent, she was refused a job at Fox.

If he doesn’t like MSNBC, he shouldn’t agree to appear on their network

You don’t fight evil by preaching to the choir. You head for enemy territory, gird your loins and do battle! Fight on, JZ!

And yeah, I disagree with this notion that Letterman is basically apolitical. He has decidedly tacked to the Left in recent years. His slobbering obeisance to people like Cindy Sheehan and Barack Obama would make guys like Chris Matthews blush.
