Shep Smith: Our viewers’ e-mails are starting to scare me

Take a group of people who are politically conscious, add Internet access and anonymity, and elect the other party’s guy president and voila: You’ve got a perfect petri dish in which to grow your very own nutroots culture. And no, before people start whining, of course I’m not saying that everyone who fits those criteria is nutroots. Just that we’re seeing a strain of paranoia in some righty blog comments since The One took office that was formerly relegated to lefty assertions about how the Bushitler would cancel the elections and declare himself king or whatever. If that were Shep’s point, it’d be fair enough; as it is, this is his hamfisted attempt to draw a straight line between dopey “Hussein” invective and the sort of decades-long dementia displayed by the Jew-loathing nut who pulled a shotgun in the Holocaust Museum today. (And who, by the way, hated neoconservatives generally and the GOP’s last two nominees for president in particular.) I don’t know how else to read this clip except as Shep warning America that his own viewership is teeming with would-be presidential assassins. If he truly believes that, why doesn’t he quit? How can his conscience stand it?
The bonus nuance here is that this vid was cut by TPM, which is suddenly shocked, shocked to find incendiary rhetoric online notwithstanding the notoriety their fellow travelers have for trafficking in it. Doubtless the point is to prove how unhinged Fox viewers are, but surf around on CNN or MSNBC or any other news website and compare the comments there. Jake Tapper’s mentioned more than once on Twitter how even his scrupulously balanced posts at ABC attract nutjobs by the dozen from both sides. Trolls are an Internet fact of life, alas. It’s time to stop being surprised.

I saw that happen live and was shocked by the way Shep conducted himself during the segment. He, I think intentionally although I may have just missed it, left out the Muslim attack on the military recruiting station and was shocked by the “hate” over the last few months being directed at the president. My question is: Where has he been for the last 8 years? The hate for Bush started the day he was elected and then got down right crazy and nasty as his time in office came to an end. People may hate Obama, and that’s fine because it is there right, but I’m almost certain some crazy prosecutor would file hate crime charges if someone made a movie depicting the assassination of Obama. Remember the movie “Death of a President”? He also spoke of the birth certificate truthers but had nothing to say of the crazy 9/11 truthers that plagued the Bush administration and even had some support among some members of the media and Congress. I’ve yet to hear a member of congress to say he wants to see the birth certificate.
There are crazies on the fringes of both sides and they are going to be crazy no matter what. And odds are that they’ve been crazy for a very long time. Both the Tiller guy and von Brunn have been crazy long before Obama came into office and both have been in custody of law enforcement before. These people are career crazy criminals. These are people that were going to blow up sometime, somewhere at someone and it was going to happen regardless of who won the election in November.
But in a segment about domestic terrorism not a word, from what I saw, about a guy that has recently made a conscious decision to become crazy and open fire at a recruiting center in Little Rock.

I think Obama is a socialist and a marxist. I think he is, in fact, going to destroy the country or get awfully close to it.
This does not mean I’m going to shoot someone. Shep wants us to be good little proles and “support our president” as he drives the U.S. off a cliff.
Also, I would like something more than a certificate of live birth about obama. Then it would put these issues to rest. I’m so tired of being told that questions that are so obvious should not be asked because they are silly and distractions. We don’t know anything about obama and he’s the president now.

Isnt Shep the hateful guy that got in a fight with somebody recently over a parking spot? Also, he is the hateful guy who couldnt control his mouth when they were discussing enhanced interrogation techniques to save American lives?
He mustve been born 5 months ago because there was more hate then (against Bush) then there is now.

My own thoughts on Shep’s behavior:
He’s leftish for a Fox anchor so his stress level is pretty high. He’s not a deep thinker so his rants are poorly reasoned. He CANNOT understand, nor stomach Glenn Beck’s Nielson numbers. Sooo…
He belongs on CNN.

Hitler, Mussolini, Chavez all came to power legally, within the electoral process of their country. If people had stopped them when the first signs of totalitarianism shows up lots of hardship and death would have been avoided.
I’ll be dammed if I stand by idly while this country goes the same way. When my daughters ask me what I did to protect my country it’s going to be something more than having sat on the couch and watched it happen.
If that scare Shep too bad. I am sure the first revolutionaries scared lots of people too.

mr.blacksheep on June 10, 2009 at 8:24 PM
If the raving lunatics had to go live on Fox or anywhere else you can bet their comments would be a lot more subdued. Instead, they can write pretty much whatever they want and remain anonymous and glory in the fact that their little blurb appears on CNN or Fox or whatever for all the world to read. But if you took away their internet connection they probably wouldn’t rant at all.

After having been subjected to years of the most vitriolic hate speech anyone could imagine, he’s surprised that once the spewers of that hate get into power, some of the fringe lunatics from the other side start to get afraid enough to act on that fear? When you consistently blur the line between reality and hyperbole, there will be a few nut jobs who can’t tell the difference.
Well d’uh.

I also saw this live and would someone puh-leeze give me the email address for Studio B (he conveniently does not mention it) so that I can tell him -politely- how far off the mark he was on this one.
I’m fairly certain he ought to read O’Reilly’s or Hannity’s email if he wants to be scared. And he was deliberately trying to tie his email to the election of Obama making people more “hateful”. Shep needs to grow up. I want him to stay where he’s at because he’s beautiful (I dont’ care which way he swings, he’s a beautiful man) but he needs to get a clue or they are going to have to give him a co-host like Megyn Kelly or Martha McCallum, who are much smarter -but less beautiful- than him.

Who cares about Shepard Smith? He’s having a mid-life hissy-fit. His real talent is to read a teleprompter from 7-8 pm. Oh, he’s also good at coordinating his assortment of pastel ties with his hundreds of suites. He doesn’t do much heavy lifting, so why pay so much attention to him? Frankly, I find his analysis like watching a train wreck. I haven’t watched him in years and just stick to the 6 pm broadcast with Bret Baer.

Shepard is reading his own tone into that email. That was far from a nut job email. Obama has no right to be President if he is not a naturally born citizen. That is a big deal. The fact that Obama is a commie (i.e. obamacare, Pay Czar for all companies, etc…) is a huge deal. The fact that Obama keeps lying to the people about the bills they are creating is a huge deal.
A nut job email would be death threats. Someone venting is far from death threats.
Why is it that so many people read too much into the written word?

Did you agree with Shep that the DHS was vindicated because Von Brunn’s military service during WW2 was a red flag that he was a terrorist?
I guess AP couldn’t find that clip.
The other networks could destroy Fox News with this. Even Olbermann’s network had the “greatest generation” thing going based pretty much on the very thing that Shep and all the Fox reporters he was talking with seem to think is a red flag for terrorism. It makes me wonder how high up this sentiment goes over at Fox.

Regarding the comment about Obama’s birth certificate: I just got a affidavit from my company that I had to sign to verify eligibility for our company health plan. I have worked for this company for over 15 years! I also had to provide documentation too; a copy of my marriage certificate, part of my 2008 tax return, my son’s birth certificates and proof of their full-time student status. Now if I have to do all that just to get my company insurance why doesn’t the Candidate for the President of the United States have to submit his official birth certificate when they file to run for that office? Seems like such a little thing when you think about it for such an important job. In regards to Shep, he doesn’t want to live in a country that will use “torture” to save American lives. Even his wife and kids lives I guess. He has been coming out of the Democrat Closet ever since Obama was elected and in the process he’s been getting more and more comical.

I hate to tell you this but I can remember some paranoid and very hostile comments during Bubba Clinton’s terms. Whole websites/forums evolved during that time based on their hatred of anything Clinton.
The point…there will always be hateful paranoid schzoid people. They used to be relegated to letters to the editor, meeting in small groups, and drunken rants to their bartenders. Thanks to the internet these people are able to quickly find like-minded morons and unfortunately both sides will have their share of the off-the-cliff-they’re -out-to get-me crazies.

What’s funny is you take ANY group of people you get fringe people who believe or say all sorts of wild things. I run a sports blog for a college team and if you read any of the message boards for any college team you get all sorts of insane stuff. Sports fans threaten players’ lives and at times act as though their team losing is the end of the world.
In short, take any cross section of the population, give them something they feel passionate about and you get nuts.
tarheelcon on June 10, 2009 at 8:49 PM
I fail to see how what Shep read was ‘hate speech’. I’m getting tired of hearing how calling someone’s policies fascist or socialist is some sort of insult. It is what it is. Maybe Ol’ Shep needs to grow a spine.

Once you can define dissent as hate speech than it’s a short skip and a hop to suppress it.
Funny, I don’t remember this concern over GW’s safety with all the death threats he got on the Kos. The Kos even got the democratic candidates to kiss butt at their convention. Imagine a right leaning blog with death threats to Obama inviting the republican candidates.

You just gotta wonder. Shep just threw his viewers under the bus because based upon the email he read, a majority of conservatives echo the writers’ sentiments. It seemed like red meat intended for the libs and thrown with a vengeance. And, oh how perfect that it is now nicely tagged with a white supremacist, anti-Semite shooting rampage.
This will take up where Homeland Security’s right wing extremist report left off. Calling Obama out as a socialist, Marxist now gets you labeled as “hate-filled and scary”. And that, seems to me, is exactly what Shep, et al, intended.

Felonious Monk on June 10, 2009 at 9:30 PM
Shut up, Shep. I knew he was going to read an email that really wasn’t all that shocking or “extreme.” In fact, the emailer asked a very good question, one the media (including Fox) wants to continue to ignore: where is Obama’s long-form birth certificate? Why has he refused to release it, along with his college records and other important documents that the public has an interest in seeing? Is it seriously too damn much to ask that Obama PROVE to us that he is actually constitutionally eligible to hold the office of POTUS? Or do people just not care, including most of you spineless “conservatives”?
What a sick world we live in these days. Up is down, right is left, bad is good. Rational query and debate is “extreme” and not allowed.

She was just banned short time ago under a different monikor but reregistered. Alot of the banned people do it. And they never even try to hide the fact that they were banned and are back to cause more trouble.

Anyone contimplating taking out this president should study history first. That would be the worse thing to do. It would martyr him and he would go down as the best President we ever had. He would be equated to Jesus Christ on the Cross, not to mention how that would set off a civil war with racial elements resulting in giving Democrats the excuse to suspend the constitution and go after your guns. The best thing to do is lets have this failure so all the idiots can see what is wrong with these policies. I suspect the libertarian party is going to come of age if the republicans don’t get their house in order.
