Letterman: When I joked about Palin’s daughter having sex, I meant Bristol, not Willow

A sneak preview of tonight’s monologue from EW. He wasn’t joking about her 14-year-old daughter being a prostitute, silly. He was joking about her 18-year-old daughter being a prostitute. Perfectly legal. Whew!
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” Saying he hopes he’s “cleared part of this up,” Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.
Don’t you see? He’d never condone statutorily raping a girl who’s underage. All he meant to do was goof on the idea that Palin’s eldest daughter, a single mother with a baby, is a whore. Everything cool now? Let’s move on.

My. That had to have been one of the most disgusting, disturbing threads we’ve had in a long time. It’s pathetic that opening the site to others always results in the all night nutjobs voicing their ridiculous, foul opinions.
There is NO excuse for David Letterman’s bitter, putrid, comments on Sarah Palin’s family. End of story. He’s shown himself as nothing more than a crusty, bitter old man trying to regain his comedic edge by pandering to the far side of the looney left. I don’t watch CBS anyway, but I still called and e-mailed them, and their advertisers to let them know it was unacceptable. It’s up to them to decide if they want half the country boycotting them.

You know, that’s an interesting idea; I wonder if it would even bother him if he thought every conservative website had unflattering pictures of his family plastered on them, with all of us commenting on their looks, morals, etc. What exactly is the difference between his girlfriend having their child out of wedlock, and Bristol Palin? Seems to me that the sympathy would lie with Bristol, making mistakes when you’re 17 is a little more believable than what ever excuse he makes for his situation- But then of course, your average conservative wouldn’t have asked for him to defend or explain his situation. Only the bitter libs are allowed to be judge and jury in his world.

I am beyond outraged over Letterman’s crude and indefensible jokes about Sarah Palin’s daughters. I don’t care which one he thought he was joking about being raped and/or being a whore, the 14 yr. old or the 18 yr. old. His non-apology apology last night was as almost as offensive as the original jokes. Politicians on the national stage are fair game and can defend themselves, but taking such evil shots at ANYBODY’S children should be grounds for firing. Don Imus was fired for a much less egregious offense. And I’m sure hell will freeze over before Letterman would make even a benign joke about the Obama girls, and any sensible person knows it.
Gee, I wonder why Michelle Obama and her children’s trip to London wasn’t deemed worthy of ridicule but Sarah Palin’s trip to NY was?
I have removed my CBS affiliate from my cable remote and am contacting his advertisers and will no longer patronize them.
Anything less than Letterman’s immediate firing is unacceptable.

Wow..I just looked up Letterman’s wife. It’s a pic of him with their boy. Kid seems OK. Letterman looks old enough to be his grandpa. I’d hate to knock any woman’s looks but she seems the type that he met at cousin Ralph wedding back in Indiana. Very plain Jane, kind of dumpy, and in the picture, a completely er..ah..shall we say “lost” look on her face.
You’d think with all that money she could dress a bit better than looking like she’s running to pick up a needed item at K-Mart, and didn’t have time to do anything about her appearance.

You claim Letterman didn’t say anything about rape, when the only way his joke about preganancy holds together is that both participants had to be at the Yankee game. willow was there, Bristol wasn’t. For the sake of argument, let’s go with Letterman’s contention that he meant Bristol, an 18 year old. His statement implies either 1) It was not consensual sex, which IS rape and he was joking about it or 2) it WAS consensual, which implies he is calling her a whore/prostitute which is heinous, demeaning to women and sexist. Either is wrong regardless.
