Letterman: When I joked about Palin’s daughter having sex, I meant Bristol, not Willow

posted at 8:41 pm on June 10, 2009 by Allahpundit

A sneak preview of tonight’s monologue from EW. He wasn’t joking about her 14-year-old daughter being a prostitute, silly. He was joking about her 18-year-old daughter being a prostitute. Perfectly legal. Whew!

“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” Saying he hopes he’s “cleared part of this up,” Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.

Don’t you see? He’d never condone statutorily raping a girl who’s underage. All he meant to do was goof on the idea that Palin’s eldest daughter, a single mother with a baby, is a whore. Everything cool now? Let’s move on.

Has anyone said they should be raped or are whores?

MightyConservative on June 10, 2009 at 9:29 PM

Play only says that about Conservative women silly. You have to be Michelle Malkin or Ann Coulter to be raped by liberals.

Let’s make some jokes about what the guy who plotted to kidnap Dave’s kid a few years back would do to him….

Let’s make some jokes about the stalker who chased Dave around for years would have loved to do to him…..

seems Dave lives in a glass house. I remember him almost crying on the set, maybe he actually did, about the plot about his son. Why on earth would this man joke, JOKE about someone taking advantage of a child….?

Go to Hillbuzz, they have went crazy over this. All advertisers for Letterman’s show have been posted so that you can contact them and let them know he went too far and until he is taken off the air they will boycott all these companies. They are saying if Al Sharpton is capable of having Imus cancelled then we should be able to have him cancelled.

Good for you and Barack. I don’t think the joke was in good taste. It wasn’t even particularly funny. But the outrage here is over the top to the point of being self-parody. Once again, how do these posters feel about the jokes regarding Chelsea Clinton and Meghan McCain?

I’m sure you were outraged, just outraged when Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton the “white house dog” when she was 13 years old. At least Letterman openly admits he’s just a comedian.

crr6 on June 10, 2009 at 9:23 PM

As a matter of fact, yes. That was an outrageous and mean remark. Didn’t matter who said it. Attacking people’s children is classless and cowardly, no matter who is doing the talking or whom he is attacking. Suggesting that rape is okay for any woman is disgusting.

Once again, how do these posters feel about the jokes regarding Chelsea Clinton and Meghan McCain?

crr6 on June 10, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Please provide the link to David Letterman (or a figure of similar prominence) making sexual jokes about Chelsea Clinton or Meghan McCain … when they were 14 years old. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

And if you’re going to continue to pretend that you actually believe Letterman was “accidentally” committing verbal pedophilia and actually meant the elder daughter … fine. Provide a link to Letterman (or a comparable entertainer) making sexual jokes about Chelsea or Meghan at age 18.

Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Intellectual dishonesty doesn’t become you – and I suspect you’re smart enough to know just dishonest your argument is.

If Letterman actually made pedophile jokes about Chelsea – er, excuse me, if he waited until her 19th birthday to tell pregnancy jokes – I’ll concede your point.

In the meantime, perhaps you could point us to somebody, somewhere, making sexual comments about Obama’s daughters … since that would be the legitimate comparison you’re attempting to make.

Go ahead. I’ll wait.

Meh. No, I won’t. We both already know what you won’t find.

Professor Blather on June 10, 2009 at 9:37 PM

And because she got pregnant out of wedlock, she’s a whore, getting a quickie with A-Rod, and selling herself to Elliot Spitzer (the joke the next night.)

Now THAT’s some funny stuff….

Here’s James Lilek’s response:

“That’s the culture: a flat, dead-eyed, square-headed old man who’ll go back to the writers and ask for more Palin-daughter knocked-up jokes, because that one went over well. Other children he won’t touch, but not because he’s decent. It’s because he’s a coward.”

and

“Some say Dave – I’m sorry, the staff members who wrote the joke and had it printed on cards for him to read – thought the daughter in attendance was the older one who had the pregnancy controversy last year. This is possible; it also means that we accept as an excuse the fact that the writers confused the daughters they wished to humiliate.”

And I guess we’ll hear Biden’s daughter doing coke jokes on Letterman any day now, since she’s an adult.

He wasn’t joking about her 14-year-old daughter being a prostitute, silly. He was joking about her 18-year-old daughter being a prostitute.

Unacceptable. Palin’s trip had already been in the news for at least a day, and it was already known that Willow, not Bristol was with her. Are we really to believe that both he and his writers had no idea Willow was on this trip? She was sitting next to her mother at the baseball game he was riffing on. Pleading ignorance now is no excuse.

And everyone seems to have forgotten the reason she was in NY to begin with, i.e., the Walk for Autism. No speeches, no political agendas, just another participant. That was glossed over by the media too.

Dave in San Diego on June 10, 2009 at 9:42 PM

drunyan8315 on June 10, 2009 at 9:48 PM

People need to get the facts before arguing. Bristol Palin was NOT at the ball game. Sarah and Willow Palin were. Davis Letterman said “one awkward moment for Sarah Palin, during the seventh inning her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez”. It’s quite a stretch to think that Mr. Letterman confused Bristol and Willow. I think David Letterman was trying to push the envelope and see how much he could get away with.

FWIW Mr. Letterman has a team of people who write his jokes for him, and he could blame sloppy screening as the cause. Maybe fire the writer. It was pretty well known That it was Sarah and Willow at the ball game, so for Mr. Letterman to try to wash his hands of what he said is difficult to say the least. However in the near term I expect the MSM to accept his explanation, and whitewash the event.

I haven’t posted here for months. I usually hang out at MM’s site…but this just makes me want to spit nails at that idiot. Imus was fired for much less. Imus was humiliated, escoriated, filleted and served up for dinner. I didn’t like him, and don’t like Letterman. Both should have used some semblance of common sense. This makes Letterman look like the dirty old man that sits in a park all day waiting to look up a child’s dress. He’s a letch and is now proven to be a pervert. Any apologies are worthless.

Had he made the same comments about the First Lady and her daughters there would have been hell to pay. This man reads lines from a script, and like all actors (he’s not a comedian) thinks his vision of the world is golden. He’s twisted and needs help. He needs to go.

our being dishonest here. Again Bristol was never at Yankee stadium so how can he have meant her ?

William Amos on June 10, 2009 at 9:53 PM

I think Dave….needs to go on Todd’s show. I think Todd’s filming out in the AK wilderness—Todd Palin, “Dave, let’s take a walk…”

—-trust me, the jokes would end…

ted c on June 10, 2009 at 9:54 PM

If someone said something derogatory about chelsea clinton at age 13, then that sh*t was wrong and over the line.

These are CHILDREN, minors, innocents. Leave them alone.

If not, the nasty sasha and malia jokes from disgruntled people will begin very soon and we will see true hypocrisy from the lefties. Leave the children ALONE. If it goes to soetoro’s kids, we will see a civil backlash, for sure.

Ris4victory on June 10, 2009 at 9:54 PM

I’d have more sympathy for Palin and her family if she didn’t dress up in skimpy outfits, wink at the audience during the debates, and use her family as a prop for pro-life grandstanding. I think her fans are making a mountain out of a molehill. They should realize that if you are going to throw ridiculous accusations out like calling the president a terrorist, then you should also prepare for incoming fire and not act like you are the victim.

She is acting like a liberal.

SouthernGal on June 10, 2009 at 9:54 PM

In a perfect world…Todd would get ahold of Letterman and make him cry like the liberal pussy he is.

In a even MORE perfect world, Track would get to him first.

crr6 on June 10, 2009 at 9:52 PM

Rode Werk on June 10, 2009 at 9:48 PM

But go ahead and keep ignoring reality.

MightyConservative on June 10, 2009 at 9:55 PM

William Amos on June 10, 2009 at 9:56 PM

Grow up. They’re just jokes and you don’t control the universe.

Moesart on June 10, 2009 at 9:50 PM

They’re not “just jokes.” They’re outrageous, inapropriate comments made at the expense of a child.

They’re wrong.

massrighty on June 10, 2009 at 9:56 PM

Well at least my side doesn’t have a monopoly on the politics of perpetual outrage.

crr6 on June 10, 2009 at 8:50 PM

Funny how farther down the comments you were complaining about something that Rush Limbaugh said about Chelsea 16 years ago. How long do you have to maintain your outrage before it becomes considered “perpetual”?

In any case, Letterman’s excuse about Bristol Palin being the butt of his asinine jokes just doesn’t wash. Both jokes were about the Palins trip to New York and their interactions with New York personalities. Fish out of water and all that. But Bristol did not come on this trip to New York, and Willow did. The jokes were about Willow, and Willow is 14-years-old.

Why you want to defend a guy who cracks sexual jokes about a 14-year-old girl, but are still outraged about a comment made about a 13-year-old’s appearance made 16 years ago, I can’t quite figure out.

Maybe if Letterman starts making innuendoes about Piper, that would be over-the-line to you. I would hope so, anyway.

Rode Werk I was referring crr6 to your post, and directed my comment at him; sorry for any confusion since I can’t go back and edit my post.

MightyConservative on June 10, 2009 at 9:57 PM

Can you link to a transcript re: the Limbaugh thing? I’ve heard different takes on that. It’s become an urban legend.

ddrintn on June 10, 2009 at 9:52 PM

I recall listening to him on late night TV many years ago (when he had a TV show) and although I don’t recall the particulars, he did make disparaging remarks about the Clinton’s young daughters looks. I stop watching his TV show then and there and I don’t think his TV show laster much longer either. Letterman’s remarks were much more vile so I suggest everyone stop watching his TV show.

MB4 on June 10, 2009 at 9:57 PM

Letterman is lying. His “joke” was, SPECIFICALLY, about the daughter who attended a Yankees game with her mom. That daughter is a minor.

He can claim he meant whatever inside his own head, but he clearly targeted a minor.

Christien on June 10, 2009 at 9:57 PM

For the third time, when children are involved, it just wrong. There is no grey area here.

Yeah, I guess they’re fair game now.

Sounds good to me.

Turnabout is fair play.

LtE126 on June 10, 2009 at 9:57 PM

I can’t believe how someone could possibly justify David Letterman’s comments. I don’t care if it’s a 14 year old or an 18 year old, there is not excuse for those comments. Now, if liberals want to claim that all children of politicians are fair game, let the games begin. All politicans have children and it could really get ugly.

The most annoying thing about this is not one media outlet thought it was appropriate to condemn what Letterman said, not one. Not his home network, CBS, nor any of the alphabets, not a cable outfit like CNN the “Cable News Network” not even Obama’s favorite network, even though Obama has children who could be targeted if this gets out of hand.

It’s becoming apparent that liberals, as they did in the 50′s, have determined there is an underclass in the United States who can be discriminated against and made fun of, and it’s White Republicans. Democrats have always looked the other way until they saw some political expediency, and then they jumped on the bandwagon, such as they did with civil rights. All of the discriminators were Democrats, making Jim Crow laws, and segretating their schools and lunch counters. Now they’re doing it again, only now it’s White republicans.

Where did she call the president a terrorist? I recall that the line was “palling around with terrorists.” Which is true when you consider William Ayers.

Just look at that picture that Allah put up of Brisol and her little boy! In what universe is acceptable to make lewd remarks about young women. In any other corporate setting he would be fired at the most and go through sexual harassment classes at the least.
