Video: Jon Voight goes thermonuclear on “false prophet” Obama

posted at 4:32 pm on June 9, 2009 by Allahpundit

Alternate title: “Jon Voight begs to never work in Hollywood again.” He’s no Daniel Hannan but he ain’t bad: Ten full minutes of rhetorical roundhouses here, from Obama’s fraudulent posturing as a “pragmatist” during the campaign to the perils of his Israel policy to the “oppression” of his economic blueprint to the pure polemic of referring to him as a “soft-spoken Julius Caesar.” He’s unfair when he describes our new foreign policy as getting together with enemies in a little playground — The One did, after all, double down against the Taliban in Afghanistan — but if this new Rasmussen poll is accurate, Captain Diplomacy’s willingness to meet rogue regimes “without preconditions” is already wearing thin with a huge majority of the public. Smart power or soft power?

If you need an extra incentive to watch to the very end, the boss gets a shout out. Exit question: Voight in 2012?

Unlike that low rent version (Megan Fox) of his daughter (Megan Fox Angelina Jolie), Voight isn’t talking down to a group of voters, but a wolf politician dressed in sheep’s clothing ;)

either orr on June 9, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Personally I find it amusing the sort of double standards conservatives apply to celebrities, i.e. the fact that you only want to hear the opinions of Hollywood actors if they match YOUR opinions. George Clooney spent years referring to Bush as a tyrant, dictator, blah blah blah. All conservatives did was screech, then. Now? Not so much.

I also find it amusing that conservatives are taking their cues from an actor who took part in a deliberately staged cinematic attempt to portray Mormonism as a bloodthirsty-cult just several years back, in what was an obvious ploy to sink Mitt Romney’s support among mainstream Christians.

scalleywag on June 9, 2009 at 5:25 PM

Sinise, Voight, Frank Miller, Duvall, Eastwood, Fred! Thompson…there are some really great stars in Hollywood that are conservative/libertarian.

I hate to give weight to anything a Hollywood actor/artist says, because it then legitimatizes the left-leaning brand of same said artists, but Voight had a great speech. Too bad the majority of the attendants (was Palin there?) seemed more of a RINO brand, because I didn’t think the reaction met the quality of the speech.

Lourdes on June 9, 2009 at 5:34 PM

In an industry riddled with ignorant, pink panty wearing libs it becomes almost surreal to listen to this. For a Hollywood celebrity to take the positions he takes and voice them at such a large venue in the age of youtube some serious self sacrafice is required. 9 out of 10 times his name is mentioned in the media from here on out it will be in the form of ridicule. He can certainly kiss that lifetime achievement award goodbye and say farewell to any future Oscars. This is a man who certainly doesn’t give a crap what the hell anybody thinks about him. It takes no guts for liberals to blather about political opinions because they’re speaking to an echo chamber. Liberal opinions are celebrated in their world whereas Conservatives are vilified. Jon Voight has some serious cahones to say the things he says in this speech.

I think attacking Obamanomics or Obama’s Statonomics is much more effective than attacking his foreign policy, though Voight is right about Israel. They do have the right to defend themselves, even from a demigod/demagogue like Obama, and when they do you can be sure the press will call them a racist nation that should’ve learned from the Holocaust. Still, it’s impossible to make a dove a hawk. Focus on the failure of statist economics, imo.

Soonerliberty on June 9, 2009 at 5:40 PM

If Voight had been nasty or potty-mouthed it would really weaken his overall message. (Can Garofalo or even Maher deliver their opinions with thought, clarity and composure? No.)

Even Dick Cavett, whom I generally love, wrote a nasty piece on Sarah Palin. It made him look worse; I lost a little respect. Not because he took a critical look at Palin. It was just so elite-bitchy-New Yorky. Over the top catty. Like lunch with the girls.

Yes, I agree with you on that. Every election cycle, I anticipate some position, noticable presence, it never appears or appears too late to make much to any public impact. If the Democrats manage to get Villaraigosa into the CA Governor’s office, I mean, I just can’t imagine the horrors that would result that would be even worse than present conditions. The one thing the Democrats cannot do is cut spending, not on things that assist the DNC; they only cut services that affect citizens, as long as the “voting Democrat” “base” is not touched (all those incentives remain in place along with huge state employees — more incentives that fund the DNC — and burgeoning benefits deals, none of that is ever modified, yet citizens’ get shafted)(and a Demo Gov. will only accelerate this graft process by the Demos as to CA).

We all need to play a part in making it ‘cool’ to cherish our founding documents regardless of who the president is. Speak openly about individual liberty, and American values. Spread the word: We the people run this country, and the pols work for us!

Reward brave public figures who champion American values; and reject anti-American snobs who spew propaganda.

We need to mobilize on the ground to fight fire with (legal) fire.

And what does this have to do with a movie Jon made?

AUINSC on June 9, 2009 at 5:57 PM

If people like Voight get power that will end freedom of religion.

Wow, that is a huge leap.

Freedom of religion will be stricken from the Constitution? Do you really think that Americans would allow that? There is a large Christian population here (~75%), and one of the foundations of this nation is that people came here specifically to escape from religious persecution. I cannot possibly see how you can take that position about a person without a little evidence that he is advocating this. You might as well take the position that Obama is pro-Islam due to his family and thus will work to strike all other religions from the nation…nonsense.

Conservatives believe in the application of the US Constitution and in its greatness. To think that a conservative would be in favor of persecuting a religion and abolishing it is the same as saying that that person is not a conservative and DEFINITELY does not hold the same views as the vast majority of Americans, let alone conservatives. We protect anti-semitic nazis marching in the streets, don’t you think we’d protect Mormons?

Are you trolling? You sound sincere enough, but this is way off a long pier.

Running out of time and patience, looks like they took more of my friends.
Oh ! lord, Im stuck in Obama’s Afghanistan again.

The Hope and Change man in the White House said yet again I was on my way.
Somewhere I lost his connection, he ran out of words to say.

Oh ! lord, stuck in Obama’s Afghanistan again.

Mmmm…

The One did, after all, double down against the Taliban in Afghanistan

BAM CHANNELS LBJ

DIRT doesn’t matter. You don’t defeat a trans-national terrorist organization by occupying medieval villages.

Yesterday, President Obama presented his “comprehensive new strategy” for Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was neither new, nor a strategy. Behind all the rhetoric, he just said, I’m sending more troops and more money.

Barack Obama? I heard Lyndon Johnson. The only LBJ touch that BHO lacked was the word “escalation.”

The rhetoric was masterly. The content was drivel. He said, “The situation is increasingly perilous.” Which situation? Why? For whom? Certainly, it’s becoming more perilous for our troops as we escalate in support of the wrong policy.

Obama rightly identified the main threat to us as al Qaeda, which he wants to “disrupt, dismantle and defeat.” Then why are his efforts overwhelmingly directed toward the Taliban?

I don’t like the Talibs, but they didn’t attack us on 9/11. Dirt poor, they just made the mistake of renting some fleabag motel rooms to al Qaeda. And they paid heavily for it.

The Taliban strategy is to make Afghanistan ungovernable for us. What if, instead of trying to claim worthless territory in the name of a corruption-poisoned Afghan government, we flipped the rules and just kept Afghanistan ungovernable for the Taliban?

We’d need far fewer troops. And the investment’s return would be higher.

Or how about Obama’s ringing claim that the Taliban have “nothing to offer the Afghan people but terror and oppression?” Many Afghans — at least among the Pashtun plurality — don’t agree.

The tribals deep in those valleys and the Pashtuns in Pakistan feel a lot closer to the Taliban’s values than to ours. They might not mind a new road, but they’ll skip the bikinis and Budweiser, thanks. The Talibs are home-boys. We’re the foreign element. Why is that so hard to grasp?

All of this circles back to the core of the problem — and it’s not Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s not worth a mullah’s hemorrhoid. Putting the bulk of our effort into Afghanistan amounts to attacking a crisis in California by rescuing Nevada. It’s Pakistan that lies (and lies and lies) at the heart of this problem.

Jesus, is the audience sedated? The man should have gotten 10 times the applause. Great stuff.

madne0 on June 9, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Hmmm so he wasn’t wildly applauded? Hmmm. Well so maybe there are a few who understand where he really lives. I’m still waiting for my party to stand up for me against his type.

And no I didn’t watch. I said I don’t care to.

But really this has been a long day. My 14 year old daughter got stranded at the airport and we had all kinds of trouble getting her home so I’m on edge about everything.

petunia on June 9, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Petunia,

Even if John Voight is anti-Mormon, that doesn’t mean that he could ever take away freedom of religion. I strongly doubt that could happen. Even with the strong anti-Christian sentiment that seems prevalent recently, the strongest words are coming from the left, not the right. Your religion is safe, no worries. Lefties in Hollyweird make anti-American movies all of the time, bashing people of strong religious beliefs, gun owners, white males, southerners, you name it. Just because someone spouts off about that doesn’t mean they could get away with abolishing our rights. Relax a little.

This coming from the man who left his wife for another woman, forcing her to raise 2 young children alone. He didn’t want to have anything to do with them until they were older (oh, and until Angelina was more famous and rich than him and he needed a boost to his has-been status). No wonder she will have nothing to do with a cretin like him. I’m glad he’s in the GOP — he fits right in (especially with fellow wife-deserter Gingrich).

I’ve worked with Mormons and defended Mormons from verbal abuse and name calling.

Until this thread, I was unaware of the Mormon themed film Voight starred in, September Dawn. I have since read about it and can see your concern. However, I did a Google search and can find no references to Jon Voight making anti-Mormon statements other than his participation in and promotion of this film, in which he seemed to take a more anti-religious extremism position.

As to the film itself, I understand that it is not historically accurate and was harshly criticized as being anti-Mormon. However, the Mountain Meadows Massacre on September 11, 1857, is one of, if not the, darkest day in Mormon history. Then again, it was a long time ago and people change and times change. The Massacre doesn’t seem to me to be something that should be hung around all contemporary Mormons’ necks. But, it did happen.

I’m sorry that Voight may be an unacceptable Republican spokesperson for some or even all Mormons, but I need to have more evidence of specific anti-Mormon bigotry on his part before I can agree with such a conclusion. Have I missed something? Are there any specific anti-Mormon statements that can be linked?

BigWyo on June 9, 2009 at 6:10 PM

but if this new Rasmussen poll is accurate, Captain Diplomacy’s willingness to meet rogue regimes “without preconditions” is already wearing thin with a huge majority of the public.

This “wearing thin with the huge majority of the public” is only to be welcomed. Apart from any polls, meeting North Korea and Iran without preconditions is plain dumb. Say one hundred people meet to discuss this issue (for or against)and 99 come out in favor of Obama. That leaves one person who is right.
In any event, expect Israel to take unilateral action against Iranian nuclear facilities in the very near future. Israel is justified and has the power.

AUINSC on June 9, 2009 at 6:11 PM

I can see how those on the left who post here would see a double standard regarding how we treat actors and other celebrities on the left and on the right, but I think that a lot of it is that Hollywood is so overwhelmingly liberal that when someone like Mr. Voight and Mr. Sinise come along we find it something to acknowledge. I think that if Hollywood was more reflective of the country and those who represented the industry were basically 50/50 liberal/conservative that it wouldn’t be as big of a deal. But it is interesting that those on the right in Hollywood do seem to have more class than those on the left.

Everytime I disagree people start calling “troll”.

No offense meant, but I was referring more to the “…end of freedom of religion” and “worse than Obama” comments. I’m of the mind that someone can be anti-Geministorm, and I can dislike them but that doesn’t mean they are worse for their beliefs than the current president that is doing so much harm to this nation on so many levels. And, just because that anti-Geministorm loony-toon gets some power won’t mean I lost my rights, America is still the land of the free after all.

Keep your chin up, things happen for a reason, just because you can’t understand God’s plan doesn’t mean He’s working against you.

So, suddenly you’re concerned about men abandoning their wives? Or, am I bound to hear about conservative hypocrisy now? How about when a man (liberal or conservative) makes a vow to be true to their wife and breaks that vow? Are you saying that liberals don’t need to be honest and keep their word to their loved ones? How about liars? You see where I’m headed for this, right? Clinton…

Well, I guess I can say that both sides of the fence is full of hypocrites, its just that the right side actually cares, the left, not so much. So, what’s your point?

I wonder who else in Hollywood might be thinking the same thing.

Craig T Nelson from “Coach” was on Glenn Beck saying “I think it’s ridiculous that we’re all now owning a car company” Please…pretty please more celebrities grow a pair and come out of the closet.

We’ll support your movies I promise.

I liked Voight in the last Transformers movie. What shocked me about Transformers besides that it was a pleasant surprise was that the U.S. Troops were the GOOD GUYS instead of a bunch of psycho killers like in other movies.

Seriously Hollywood you’re missing 50% of a potential audience.

If I am not mistaken, the American Democrats almost brought him to higher office umm.. Twice?
