Video: Economic reporting, then and now
posted at 8:46 am on June 9, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Ed Frank finds something amiss in today’s media environment when it comes to economic trends and analyses. Frank notices that the media today seem willing and even eager to parrot the White House and Barack Obama in his sunny optimism, despite unemployment shooting up higher and faster than anytime in the last 70 years. Back in 2003-4, when the American economy recovered from what looks in comparison to a speed bump, Frank recalls a much different media environment:
None of this comes as a shock to Hot Air readers, although the video nicely contrasts the coverage in a way that text comparisons don’t quite match. Richard Benedetto, meanwhile, sees media bias in another comparison — and this one much more timely:
Which is more newsworthy — the murder of an abortion doctor in Wichita, Kan., by an alleged anti-abortion activist or the murder of an Army recruiter and the wounding of another in Little Rock, Ark., by an alleged Muslim convert who is said to hate the U.S. military?
Most people not involved in news-placement decisions would probably say they were equally newsworthy. But those in the news media actually making those decisions had a different view.
Here’s how the media played the two stories:
• Murder of abortion doctor on Sunday — front-page news in most major newspapers and a lead story on network TV news shows on Sunday and Monday
• Murder of one Army recruiter and wounding of another on Monday — buried inside the same papers and newscasts on Tuesday
Why, it’s almost as if the media had a political agenda, isn’t it?

As I’ve said in the past and will say again: The current and next bubble to pop is the “Obama Bubble”.
When his popularity pops, it’s not coming back, and he will be at George W. Bush levels.
I’m not so sure that it hasn’t already popped but the State Run Media and their pollsters aren’t covering it up. The current situation of Obama being very popular but all of his policies being very UNPOPULAR is as unsustainable as his spending, and the media KNOWS this.
wildcat84 on June 9, 2009 at 8:55 AM
Why do we keep using the word “bias”?
The media were simply biased in the 80s. They are now fully corrupt. Breitbart says he finally realized they were part of the Democratic party. Rush even refers to them as the State Run Media.
When will HotAir wake up?
faraway on June 9, 2009 at 8:56 AM
The “media” was, is and will always be the propaganda arm of the left. Anyone that looks to the media for news and unbiased reporting is living in some parallel universe.

Very good observation wildcat84. How in the world you could like a guy, but hate his policies is beyond my comprehension. I mean I understand that there are people that are friends that differ in political views, but the people that you see everyday and have differing views aren’t in the White House either.

You guys are all just seeing what you want to see. There is no ideological bias, simply a bias towards selling newspapers. That’s why newspapers are stronger than ever.

The MSM has lost all credibility with me and others I know. After their sustained attempts to lose the war in Iraq, over the top support for Barack Obama and sustained attacks on both Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, the MSM is dead to me.
There are bright writers & bloggers on the internet and I no longer feel the need to rely on traditional media, which has compromised itself beyond redemption. The major networks and papers sold their integrity for partisan gains and there is no going back. Those in the MSM are no longer worthy of the trust they were once afforded. The illusion of objectivity is gone and a new age has dawned.
Stickeehands on June 9, 2009 at 9:00 AM
It almost goes without saying, but how can we speak truth to power when we allow this crap to pass as credable reporting? I mean, when the majority of Americans wake up to MSNBC or CNN and get their “news” then how can we even talk to them? Let alone inform them?
It’s literally like we took a soap opera and then played it on TV on told people it was real. And now they buy it, and act like it’s the world they live in.
Pretty soon it’ll be a time for choosing.

Anything done by a human being that involves subjective interpretation (which all reporting is) cannot by definition be objective or non biased. The difference is that in the past this was realized and rigorous standards used to compensate.
There really is no difference anymore between commentators and reporters, except that commentators are more honest in at least owning up to their personal bias.
I actually wish the media would go after democrats the way they went after George W Bush and Republicans. I believe the reason why the press was the sole PROFESSION listed as protected in the Bill of Rights was that the Founders intended them to be anti-establishment as a check on unrestrained and abusive government.
The press is only anti-establishment though when Republicans are in power. They are part of it and defenders of it when democrats are.

This just disgusts me. These people are either 1) oblivious to their bias, or 2) snickering at us behind the scenes knowing that they control the information.

You’re joking, right? POtuS ‘Doom and Gloom’ and his merry band of misfits who couldn’t hold down a job in the private sector, continue to tell us how bad it is at every turn.
Conditions were ready for a correction and the powers-that-be poured fuel on the fire to create this manufactured crisis for political expediency and to ensure a willing public would go along with their socialist/marxist policies out of fear and ‘something MUST be done’.
But to attribute ‘sunny optimism’ to Obama? I think not. Mr. Hope-n-Change Jeckyl-Hyde’d into Doom-n-Gloom when he descended into office.

As a reformed lib and now a staunch conservative, one factor that proves the truth of my beliefs is the fact that, despite the left’s stranglehold on the media and school system, conservatism still has a strong voice in this country. faraway on June 9, 2009 at 8:56 AM
You’re correct. It’s time to introduce something stronger: propaganda may be too strong, but something stronger than bias is appropriate. I’m open to suggestions.
Bias is simply too kind a word to apply to the manipulation (not coverage) of the stories about Private Long and Dr. Tiller. Seriously, which event presents a matter having a greater effect on the lives of Americans: the murder of an American soldier committed by a homegrown Islamic terrorist or the murder of a doctor performing late-term abortions by an anti-abortion extremist? I regret the latter, but I’m far more concerned about the former. But the state-run media don’t agree.

It’s already happened in the newspaper business — back in the 1950s and 60s, when afternoon papers were done in by the 5 and 6 p.m. local newscasts, and the workers in the newspaper guilds refused to see the handwriting on the wall and adjust their salaries/benefits. A few were able to switch to morning publication and survive; most simply folded and left most of the workers to fume at their evil corporate bosses for refusing to lose millions of dollars and putting them out of jobs.
jon1979 on June 9, 2009 at 9:38 AM
In 2003 the story was the war. In 2009 the story is the economy. The big news organizations tend to follow the herd.
The timing of the financial crisis was awful for the GOP. The darkest days were in October of 2008 and things have improved greatly since then–there should be about 10 banks cleared for TARP payoffs today. However, the fundamentals of the economy are weaker than the media is presenting and if there is a double dip on this recession, Obama and Geithner will be the one’s getting the blame.

We, the family, recently watched our dvd, “Foreign Correspondent”. From the making of this movie, until things began going rancid in the media it
really was not that long.
The root of the evil propaganda we are now reaping stems from academia. But who was watching them? I am sure many here have been politically active, and constantly sounding the warning sirens about the impending doom we might face if we did not get both the media and academia under control. However, far to many people have opted out of America and protecting her from the forces now in power. With Obama funneling money to NBC via GE, and the economy being trashed, what is the answer in taking back the media? My husband believes for us to make a larger difference in elections and in carrying out reform we must take back at least one of the alphabets.

B. Hussein Obama and his crew (ClownCo) have already failed. Unemployment is going to be 11 – 12% by December. They can spin all they want, but ClownCo now owns the problem.
IMHO, republicans should wait until 10% unemployment, then really start bearing down on the goofy leftist policies. Since it’s not likely that the job picture will improve by Nov 2010, they can use this issue to regain seats. The economy drives most elections, and this one’s a slam dunk.
conan547 on June 9, 2009 at 10:03 AM
I was thinking about that this morning when I drove past the gas station near my apartment. Where’s the story about how gas is going up 3 to 10 cents/gallon every couple of days? Because back then we were looking at the collapse of the financial system, the elimination of credit, electronic bank runs.
Since then credit spreads have narrowed, banks have raised non-government equity, the S&P seems to be in a consolidation phase at around 940.
I think the S&P heads back down again based on weak fundamentals. However, in the fall of 2009 we were contemplating fiscal apocalypse. Now we are dealing with a contraction, though one that will be deeper and longer than many are currently predicting.

Health insurance companies will be going down next. Bankruptcy of 2 of the big 3 automakers
Weak Dow Jones

We’re still in a financial apocalypse and everything the ONE is doing is making it worse. Much worse.

These people are being played, and don’t know it, or don’t care. Which is truly sad. It’s time to wake up now.
capejasmine on June 9, 2009 at 10:37 AM
What Obama is doing is creating a drag on the economy that will make a recovery less robust.
Of the issues you point to:
Weak Dow/stock market: It is up 40% from its lows.
Weak dollar: It will get weaker, though so will the Euro.
Increasing commodity prices: Yeah, though lower than a year ago. There is a real risk here of hyper-inflation if the Fed over stimulates.
Unemployment: A real problem. It is a lagging indicator and won’t rebound until after economy does. Still “efficiencies” mean that businesses will be slower to rehire than in the past.
House sales: The recent 100bp increase in mortgage rates is a problem.
Bond Market: Watch the Treasury actions this week for the 10s and 30s. It will affect equities and tell us a lot about whether the markets can absorb the US hunger for borrowing.
No signs of recover: I’m bearish on the whole “green shoots” talk. My point is merely that we’ve avoided the systemic breakdown of our credit markets (i.e., banks are lending to each other and to businesses).

May have already been covered, but in regard to the picture on the front page, I have a difficult time distinguishing between Putin’s and Obama’s press coverage.
tdau1997 on June 9, 2009 at 10:46 AM
You should see what it’s really like for a conservative to work in a TV newsroom dominated by liberals. Decisions on what stories to cover politically and how to cover them is dictated by the left-leaning editorial staff day-in, day-out, and you’d better do it their way or else. There is no room for balance, and criticism of Obama or leaders of the dems is virtually non-existent or glossed over quickly and perfunctorily. There’s a love fest amongst staffers for Olby and Matthews and during the presidential campaign my ears burned from the non-stop litany of hateful comments and offensive jokes openly made against Sarah Palin. Objective reporting and coverage? This place makes Al-Jazeera look fair and balanced.
Goldy1 on June 9, 2009 at 10:51 AM
Ann Coulter called it the Guard Dog Media in her CPACspeech. I think that says it even better – the media are actively cheerleading Obama and actively attacking anyone who questions him or his policies at all. They are not just laying down for the White house spin machine, they have become active participants in it. This is truly unprecedented in American history.
This morning I watched some of “Inside Edition” after the CBS early Show. It was impossible to tell the difference between the “tabloid” show and the “news” show in the way they covered the Obamas or the economy.

When 9/11 happened I worked for Clear Channel, at their corporate HQ. We had the live unedited feeds of reporters from all over the world (AP Reuters, you name it) playing via our systems. (Clear Channel has god knows how many radio stations). Interestingly the US MSM did not report all that was going down and their spin at times was incredible. If you really wanted to see what was going on, UniVision had better coverage.
It was then that I began to realize how screwed us the public were.
catlady on June 9, 2009 at 1:02 PM
The MSM is the very definition of insanity – keep trying the same thing over and over again, hoping for different results. They obviously think if they keep reporting with a liberal bias, eventually people will start reading and watching, and they will become profitable.
You would think some media outlet other than Fox News would try a more objective approach and do the type of investigative reporting that is called for by these clowns in Washington and state-houses.
PatMac on June 9, 2009 at 1:13 PM
Where are you going to find the objective reporters? You can’t go to the journalism schools, they are filled with sheeple following their lib professors around sniffing their crotches. You can’t find ‘good’ objective reporters already in the business because they’ve either been smart enough to hide their objectivity or they have been drummed out of the business.
Best to just let the print media die and be done with.

Regarding the pecs–or lack thereof. I could care less what that buffoon looks like without his shirt on. I haven’t had any erotic dreams of him as some have apparently had. So far the only thing he’s supported and defended is his right to plunge our children into debt for decades to come! For that I rebuke him and his policies.
