Obama DoJ defends secrecy for Bush-era interrogations

During the presidential campaign, both Barack Obama and John McCain objected to the Bush administration’s enhanced interrogation techniques, and both objected to different degrees to the level of secrecy maintained on certain national security processes.  Obama claimed that voters couldn’t trust McCain to change the way Washington did business on these counts because (a) McCain was a Republican, (b) McCain was a Republican who had been in DC for almost thirty years, and (c) did I mention that McCain was a Republican?  Only Obama, an outsider (from the US Senate?), could restore balance, harmony, and openness to our fight against terrorists.

Or … maybe not:

The Obama administration objected yesterday to the release of certain Bush-era documents that detail the videotaped interrogations of CIA detainees at secret prisons, arguing to a federal judge that doing so would endanger national security and benefit al-Qaeda’s recruitment efforts.

In an affidavit, CIA Director Leon E. Panetta defended the classification of records describing the contents of the 92 videotapes, their destruction by the CIA in 2005 and what he called “sensitive operational information” about the interrogations.

The forced disclosure of such material to the American Civil Liberties Union “could be expected to result in exceptionally grave damage to the national security by informing our enemies of what we knew about them, and when, and in some instances, how we obtained the intelligence we possessed,” Panetta argued.

Although Panetta’s statement is in keeping with his previous opposition to the disclosure of other information about the CIA’s interrogation policies and practices during George W. Bush’s presidency, it represents a new assertion by the Obama administration that the CIA should be allowed to keep such information secret. Bush’s critics have long hoped that disclosure would pinpoint responsibility for actions they contend were abusive or illegal.

The irony, of course, is that McCain may not have gone this far to keep the documents secret.  McCain offered a tough-minded approach to the war on terror, much tougher than Obama promised or has delivered thus far, but he was no fan of these interrogations.  Instead of leaking them selectively, McCain — deeply schooled in the bipartisan-commission process — would probably have already appointed a panel to review the entire breadth of documentation for analysis and perhaps even disclosure.

Instead, we have yet another defense of George Bush by Barack Obama.  Now, I’m no expert on HopeandChange, but I’m fairly certain that this is the antithesis of what Obama voters thought they would get from their transcendent hero.  They certainly haven’t expected a whole series of these defenses, starting with the NSA’s warrantless surveillance program, to the set of pictures depicting abuse by the military of a few detainees, to this refusal to cooperate on the granddaddy of all Bush-era issues for the Left — the so-called “torture regime” of the Bush administration.

What happens to the true believers in 2010, and later in 2012, if their hero continues to defend Bush and keep the records sealed?

Yet Obama’s supporters will never see the irony in this. Hey “Barry” this job can be tough can’t it.

Denial and/or excuses about him being ’smart enough’ to change his mind unlike that stooopid, idiot W, whose fault all of this is and we inherited this and, um uhhhh, um er uhhhh… YES WE CAN.

Will be interesting to see if Code Pink interrupts the Obama’s 2012 Convention Speech with protests.

“I’m fairly certain that this is the antithesis of what Obama voters thought they would get from their transcendent hero.”

Ed, we have seen this kind of thing many times already in Obama’s few months in office. What you wrote is true for the few hardcore leftwingers. But for the vast majority of Obama voters, I truly believe they just wanted to see their man in office, and they will support him no matter what, just as they refused to support Bush, no matter what. All style, no substance.

They continue to fight for justice and get the President to do what’s right. Bush personally tortured innocent insurgents for years to satisfy his need for blood and oil, and no one cares, apparently. Only when he has been held accountable and put on trial in a people’s court will justice be served.

What is most discouraging to me is that, because of Obama’s actions, all we can go on is suppositions. What happened to sunlight being the best disinfectant?

Oh, you mean there are valid reasons for state secrets? Get out!

Seriously though, the conflation of all these detainee interrogations grates. HVT’s were interrogated harshly, 3 of them, before 2003. Since then the CIA has employed none of the objectionable (to some) techniques. Now we have interrogations that took place in 2005. We know that none of the enhanced interrogation techniques (or torture for you of better morals than I) were used during these interrogations. So, I ask, what’s up? Does the ACLU think that these people were tortured as well? What is the purpose of releasing this information? Does the ACLU even know?

It’s true that those that chose Obama primarily because of race (either guilty whites or happy non-whites) or BDS don’t care about policy.

But the hardcore lefties run the blogs and control the other media, so they control the narrative and have to be satisfied. They can cause Obama no end of problems simply by saying nothing as he continues to screw up. He’s owned.

jwolf on June 9, 2009 at 10:21 AM

This is consistent with my observations.

My lefty friends are “vote the party” Democrats with nary a thought for substance. As long as he speaks charismatically (though I daresay I could read a teleprompter as well as The Immaculate One) and pays homage to “fairness”, abortion rights and milk-the-rich, he can do whatever he pleases and he will be hailed a hero, even if he backtracks on War on Terror ‘adjustments’ twice a week.

I only know one exception to that rule among all the Democrats I know, and buyer’s remorse set in for her on Jan. 20th. A bit late, but who knows? Maybe it will be ingrained deeply enough for the next election…

Government lawyers continue to say what government did was ok.

Treasury officials say the stimulus will help the economy.

In other news the chocolate ration is being increased to 25 grams per week.

LevStrauss on June 9, 2009 at 10:28 AM

Obama is simply being a good Alinsky acolyte; he’s maintaining and consolidating power. To release the information the radical Left wants released would expose THE ONE to a catastrophic America-based attack, or to directly attributable loss of life among American service or diplomatic personnel.

That would bring the end of Obama’s power. No chance of him allowing that.

Ragspierre on June 9, 2009 at 10:28 AM

if we continue to pour the salt on the moonbats wounds, are we certain Obama won’t reverse course to finally appease them and in the process screw over the nation?

Okay, but how do we prevent the government from abusing this power or authority.

We all acknowledge the need for secrecy, especially during a time of war. But what is to prevent the state from using the national security argument to coverup illegal activity.

As Madison put it in Federalist 10, ‘you must enable the government to control the governed; but in the next instance obliget it to control itself’. We want to give the government the power to protect us but at the same time ensuring that those powers aren’t abused or misused.

SteveMG on June 9, 2009 at 10:50 AM

In my opinion, there is only one reason that Obama would be so adamant about not releasing this info. He’s continuing it. The press will gladly go along, and keep it under wraps. It is Obama after all. When Obama says it’s ok, it is. When Bush did it, he’s hitler.

McCain, I can understand his mindset, having been a victim of torture for years. I don’t know him personally, but I’d like to think, that had he been elected, he would have kept the troops out in harms way currently, safe, and out of reach, of what surely would be retribution, at these documents, and pictures, release.

What it means is that Obama will abuse any and all powers beyond their collective legality. He is a scary individual.

Bush was trying to save live…I don’t really know or care to think what Obama may want in the future.

All while the media smiles.

The example being TARP. I think Bush never intended for things to get so out of hand, but actions have consequences especially when he should have realized that the dems would have so much power.

If the economy doesn’t start to produce jobs, if Obama continues to lose independents and moderates, and if Republicans continue to pick up in the polls I expect Obama will cave on this to keep his base happy. As the past has shown, Obama’s promises come with an expiration date.
