Good news: Cop tasers 72-year-old great-grandmother

posted at 7:35 pm on June 9, 2009 by Allahpundit

Stage two of my plan to give our new registrants a proper Hot Air welcome. We’ve already had multiple Palin posts; the obligatory 800-comment police brutality thread is next. Then all that’s left is a post on atheism and my work here is done.

The dashcam audio’s a little hit and miss so you’re probably better off skimming the partial transcript before watching. As I’ve said before in our endless taser debates, I thought the stun gun is only to be used to subdue a perp who presents a physical threat or who can’t be subdued any other way. This huge cop was incapable of wrestling granny’s arms behind her back to slap the cuffs on? What if he tased her and she had a pacemaker? Verdict: Desk duty for six months.

Blowback

Note from Hot Air management: This section is for comments from Hot Air's community of registered readers. Please don't assume that Hot Air management agrees with or otherwise endorses any particular comment just because we let it stand. Nothing like getting completely hysterical. Give me a break. This cop had zero fear of this woman and you know it.

TheBigOldDog on June 9, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Hey, I heard she had some brownies in the back of her car that she was going to chuck at him…

Tell all the police officers who were shot dead on routine traffic stops that they’re “crazy”….Oh, no, wait. They’re dead.

JetBoy on June 9, 2009 at 9:48 PM

Checking Lexis-Nexus for stories relating to old women refusing to sign traffic tickets and instead shoot the cop. Standby….

Zero results? Can’t be! The internet must be broken.

infidel4life on June 9, 2009 at 9:51 PM

What are you talking about?

Clearly you have no clue.

He’s the only person who risked anybody’s safety.

In your abstract world where facts are ignored

He pulled her over for going 60 on the friggin interstate.

Yes, going 15 miles over in a construction zone. Again, road crews don’t deserve safety in your world.

He ordered her out of the vehicle.

Which is what usually happens when you do not follow a legal police directive and ASK TO BE ARRESTED

He pushed an old woman who’s not even thinking about the traffic at that point

Right, so now she is (and forget the she’d get run over at this point) is acting in a way that could cause a major pile up even if she didn’t go into traffic but simply by freaking out drivers by flinging a door open.

and he electrocuted a 72 year old woman

Not really http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/electrocution

causing her to fall uncontrollably on the ground. Tell me again who was putting people’s safety at risk again…

TheBigOldDog on June 9, 2009 at 9:42 PM

My guess is that if Ted Nugent had been in that cops place he would have tased her and then shot her.

More likely Ted would have settled for telling grandma to slow down and left it at that.

Not one of our founding fathers trusted what today we call police authority, they all hated and abhorred it.

doriangrey on June 9, 2009 at 9:47 PM

Thanks for that reminder. I return to my original post on this, the officer was following “the rules,” but in the case, “the rules” were crazy.

RedNewEnglander on June 9, 2009 at 9:49 PM

Glad to see you know the law. I like smart cops.

Anyway, of course she wasn’t right. She should have obeyed him because all of his commands were completely lawful.

Still, I don’t understand why he didn’t defuse the situation and let her sign it. It seems he had that choice and that discretion. I still think he was just dumb.

Also, I don’t think you’re being completely truthful that once a cop makes a decision to arrest someone, he must proceed with it. There are plenty of instances where a cop decides to arrest someone, only to find out that the person is ANOTHER COP, and then that person is let go with a warning. It happens all the time.

Prior to that decision to arrest having been made your point is valid.

Again, you’re not reading the situation correctly. Once the decision has been made to arrest, the arrest MUST be made.

RedNewEnglander on June 9, 2009 at 9:38 PM
Red, can you explain to me the reason why a cop cannot or should not change his mind to arrest someone, and has to proceed with robotic, mindless devotion to that single task?

I don’t understand why that kind of mindless slavery to a goal is so paramount. What’s wrong with an officer re-evaluating things when the situation changes?

Sydney Carton on June 9, 2009 at 9:41 PM

>>Red, can you explain to me the reason why a cop cannot or should not change his mind to arrest someone, and has to proceed with robotic, mindless devotion to that single task?

Once the process of the arrest is in motion, which begins with the officer showing his intent to do so to the citizen via act or word, there is no turning back. Now, it’s a double edges sword in that the officer better damn well be sure he has an arrestable offense but, again, the time to debate this is not at roadside. Since, as I’m sure you know, if the charge you’re initially arrested on turns out to be unfounded, if you resisted, you’re still guilty of resisting arrest.

>>I don’t understand why that kind of mindless slavery to a goal is so paramount. What’s wrong with an officer re-evaluating things when the situation changes?

Evaluation takes place prior to the arrest process starting. Once it starts, it should never be voluntarily stopped until the arrest is made. This, again, is why the law allows officers to use up to, and including, deadly force to affect an arrest. If THAT don’t tell you there’s no “okay, timeout – you can go, this is just too difficult to arrest you” then nothing will.

TheBigOldDog on June 9, 2009 at 9:49 PM

A police officer has to always stay sharp…again, all he did was ask her to “back away”. She decided to be a bi*tch and refuse. And again, after repeated warnings she’d be tazed, she still refused. No sympathies.

What should that officer have done then? Grab her arm, fracture her elbow, and get himself and the department sued for physical abuse?

Or should the officer have simply let her do whatever she wanted. Like, maybe, pull a gun. Sorry you scoff at that possibility. Nest time you’re in DC, be sure to check out the National Police Memorial. Read all the names of officers who dies in the line of duty.

And yes, quite as a result of routine traffic stops, the kind you think there’s nothing to worry about.

JetBoy on June 9, 2009 at 10:00 PM

IMO, she had it coming…

g0tmylifeback on June 9, 2009 at 10:00 PM

That’s exactly what they used to say about the Stasi and the KGB too.

doriangrey on June 9, 2009 at 9:07 PM

We hear praise of power-wielding police who “show an old women who’s boss” by using a taser on her. Throughout the course of history, there have been many other such wielders of such power such as the Stasi and the KGB. Sometimes a majority of the citizenry has even aproved. But their countries were not free, nor can any country remain free under such despotic power. Some of the current worship of powerful police may come from those who admire force of any sort. Others hail the display of police power simply because they approve of the result reached by the use of such power. This is nothing less than the totalitarian philosophy that the end justifies the means If ever there was a philosophy of government totally at war with that of the Founding Fathers, it is this one.

Yes, always no matter what submit to the police officer because he’s always right and you can always argue your case in court, just ask Cara Knott.

On the CHP force, Peyer was known as a “hot pencil,” issuing as many as 250 traffic citations a month and frequently lecturing for the department on traffic safety. He had patrolled the area around Mercy Road since 1982, and after Knott’s body was found, one colleague teased, “What happened, Craig, did you choke her for not signing a ticket?” None of his fellow officers seriously considered Peyer a suspect. “I couldn’t believe it,” said one when he heard of the arrest. “He was a dedicated officer.”

TheBigOldDog on June 9, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Let me be clear here – I dislike cops. I dislike authority. I don’t like being told what to do and not having the ability to respond in the manner I’d like. That said, you don’t mouth off to cops. This is common sense, something that I – like most people – learned as a small child.

Let me also be clear that if you were to taser me I’d probably have to hunt you down later and hurt you very badly. Moving on.

Beyond the fact that they (cops) risk their lives on a daily basis every time they make a traffic stop or respond to a call – and thus tend to be slightly paranoid to begin with – they have virtually all the power in most scenarios. Sure, later on if they actions were wrong they can bring it up at trial, file a lawsuit, ect, but at that moment, when the cop says “Do X or Do Z” you don’t sit and argue (unless it is something truly outrageous like “strip for me”), then mouth off – especially when we are talking about something as simple as “sign the ticket I’m giving you for doing 15mph over in a construction zone”. If

Cops – as others have noted – are people. They have bad days. They are also accustomed to their position of authority, and do not appreciate having it challenged – particularly on such an absurd matter. With that in mind, I can understand why, after she provoked him and harassed him and defiantly told him to arrest her, he was unwilling to back down. I’m not a cop, and I don’t know if I’d back down in that situation either. She pushed all his buttons, then tried to back peddle when she realized just how far she had pushed him. Tough luck. I have no issue with the shove to get her out of his face and out of traffic, and no issue with him arresting her at that point.

That said, as I said before, I think the taser was excessive. I don’t think he should have ever drawn it. I do however understand why he was more inclined to taser her then wrestle her to the ground, wrench her arms, and handcuff her. He was backed (by her conduct and his own) into a no win situation that was bad for everyone. It makes the police look bad.

I don’t fault either of them in whole.

RedNewEnglander on June 9, 2009 at 10:14 PM
Whatever you do, don’t breal your fingers actually typing a cogent response. Are all cops this lazy?

Sometimes, short answers are all that’s required in a situation.

RedNewEnglander on June 9, 2009 at 10:18 PM

Yes, different story because the officer was a professional and had no desire to see an upset elderly person be electrocuted.

>_>

Well, with the new upcoming court system, the cop will be covered, becuase his granny used to be hard on him and this 72 year old bitch obviously gave him a hard time.
People, get ready for it; In a socialistic state the victim will be the thug and the thug will be the hero……….

Dutchwolf on June 9, 2009 at 10:18 PM

Be honest here – the super freaking out over the tasing crowd – you would object just as strongly – if not more strongly – if he threw her on the ground and twisted her arms to handcuff her.

Yes, electrocuting 72 years old women is humane. Are you okay?

Cheshire Cat on June 9, 2009 at 10:19 PM

Oh, here we go.

See what you did, AC1?

People like this is why I looooove arresting complaintants on calls. “You can’t do that! I called YOU and you work for me!!! WHARGARRRRRBEL!L!!L!!!!!1!1!”

I said a few posts back that some perp demanded to see

My aren’t you the presumptuous one. In your zeal to score a lazy point you jump to all sorts of silly conclusions. Why don’t you take the time to come up with something meaningful to say so that you won’t have to hang around and try to pick low hanging fruit in order to feel like part of the conversation?

Your lack of respect for LEOs has everything to do with your perceptions and little else.

And, yes – sadly, if you’ve been on the job for any amount of time, you do develop an “us vs. them” mentality. This *may* have something to do with “them” doing things that would keep “us” from going home to our families ever again but, hell, what’s that matter, right? We’re only cops. :\

May wanna change your tag to “immature4life,” fella. Just sayin’ is all. . . ;)

What, no Gouverneur Morris quotes to shore up your argument? You’re making a spectacle of yourself. You have one incident of police abuse, which none of us said didn’t happen. What we’re saying is, you’re blowing this incident way out of proportion, and all you’ve done is prove our point. Repeatedly.

I love that an anonymous blogger thinks he can lecture anyone on American history, though.

Just to be safe, you should probably move to Mexico. It’s the only way to be sure. . .

I’ve been part of the conversation for quite some time (I just don’t post every 30 seconds).

You smeared all cops as lazy and this one in particular as a “fat f*ck” because you believe that the law does not apply to you.

You then presumptuously lectured RNE on laziness and I called you out for it. I’m not lazy if I don’t simply shoot my mouth off with the first thing that pops into my brain.

The problem is you see everyone as “them” — not just the perps, and then too many law-abiding citizens get treated like “them.” My respect, or lack thereof, for LEOs is directly proportional to the amount of respect they have for the laws they have sworn to uphold. You disrespect the law far more than the average citizen by holding yourself above it, and us. It’s too bad that these threads devolve into the same superiority crap you asshats dish out on the street. Go hang out with your cop buddies and tell yourselves how much better you are than the rest of us, I’m sure you need the ego boost after being around all of us lowlife citizens in this thread.

infidel4life on June 9, 2009 at 10:34 PM
