Brilliant idea: send trained terrorists to tourist destination

The Obama administration’s desperation to resolve the status of the Uighers in its custody has reached new heights. With Europe refusing to consider taking even those supposedly least dangerous detainees, the White House has apparently decided to bribe Palau in the South Pacific. For $200 million, the tiny island nation can have 17 al-Qaeda trained terrorists join their tourist destination (via Tammy Bruce’s Twitter feed):
The Obama administration is nearing agreement with the remote South Pacific island nation of Palau to resettle a group of Chinese Muslims now held at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, The Associated Press has learned.
As they attempt to fulfill President Barack Obama’s order to close the Guantanamo facility by early next year, administration officials are looking to Palau to accept some or all of the 17 Uighur detainees due to fierce congressional opposition to releasing them on U.S. soil, officials said. …
Asked Tuesday about discussions with Palau on the Uighurs, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly declined to comment beyond saying the United States is “working closely with our friends and allies regarding resettlement” of detainees at Guantanamo. He said the department would not comment on talks with individual countries.
Two of the officials said the United States was prepared to give Palau up to $200 million in development, budget support and other assistance in return for accepting the Uighurs and as part of a mutual defense and cooperation treaty that is due to be renegotiated this year.
Hmm. Not sure whether that sounds like a bribe or an extortion attempt. Either take these Uighers off of our hands, or else …
So what is Palau? The US liberated the nation from the Japanese during World War II, fighting a nasty battle at Peleliu in 1944, but today its main industry is tourism. Palau has a population of only 21,000 people, which makes the introduction of 17 trained al-Qaeda Muslim separatists from China just a wee bit problematic. According to the CIA Factbook, there are few if any Muslims on Palau:
Roman Catholic 41.6%, Protestant 23.3%, Modekngei 8.8% (indigenous to Palau), Seventh-Day Adventist 5.3%, Jehovah’s Witness 0.9%, Latter-Day Saints 0.6%, other 3.1%, unspecified or none 16.4% (2000 census)
Bear in mind that these 17 detainees joined AQ as part of an effort to gain a separate homeland for Muslims from China. Do they sound like the kind of men who will find it easy to blend into a population mainly comprising Christians and Modekngei, a cross between Christianity, animists, and fortune-tellers?
The US may also be setting them up with juicy targets. In 2007, Palau received four times as many visitors as its population, making 80% of its GDP on “services” and only 20% on agriculture. The CBS show “Survivor” has twice based its competition in Palau (the second time as Survivor: Micronesia). Islamic extremists have twice hit Bali in nearby Indonesia over the past seven years, and Palau would make a nice target, especially since the US is responsible for Palau’s defense.
Why Palau? It appears to be the last country in the world besides China that the Obama administration can ask, and it’s running out of time for closing Gitmo.

Wait a minute. At a time of unimaginable budget deficits, they are going to spend 200 million on transferring Al-qaeda terrorists from a prison to a tourist hot spot?
And these people have the gall to say Palin is a moron?

My FIL & MIL are heavy into religion. The kind of religion that is follow the letter of the law or else. Anyway, on the Days of Unleavened bread, you must get rid of all yeast in the house. During this time, they bring us their products with yeast in them. In other words, they bring us their “sin”.
Not sure what the difference here is. Obama wants to show he’s an upstanding guy by closing Gitmo. But now he’s in office, he realizes he can’t just release them. It’s one of those scenarios where he speaks before he thinks. (I always got into trouble for that growing up.) So now he’s going to PAY other countries to take them? Even though the reports as of late have been very HUMANE treatment of the prisoners and how efficient the prison runs.
I imagine they can use the stimulus money for this, because they are creating jobs.
jeridhill on June 9, 2009 at 6:16 PM
Ah, so the 150,000 saved or created jobs are in Palau.

redshirt on June 9, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Oh yeah. We are totally broke, but we will give you $200 million to take these terrorist off of our hands even though we have a perfectly fine prison to keep them in. No big deal, we will just borrow it from the terrorists’ home country, China. Totally ludicrous.

ctmom on June 9, 2009 at 6:20 PM
Hell..give me the $200 million. I’ll put them somewhere out of the way (and guarantee they won’t be performing any terrorist attacks on anybody, every).
AUINSC on June 9, 2009 at 6:20 PM
This is pretty irresponsible. Obama needs to take responsibility for his policy and accept the political damage from releasing them in the US or come out and admit he made a mistake about closing gitmo. Releasing these people in a place that has no security force in place to deal with the possible repercussions is really despicable.

Having flown for Continental Micronesia for many years, am quite familiar with Palau. Beautiful island with lots of tourists and quickly being developed,,,,a great target. This admin has no shame and is manned and operated by a bunch of idiots. The grade schoolers are attempting to run the university and we are all screwed. I really want to wake up from this mightmare.

I was thinking the same thing. How much do 17 bullets cost? Life is very cheap to this administration, they could just consider it a late, late, late term abortion.

Isolated US Territories
The United States owns 19 territorial possessions. I worked on this issue as a Congressional aide in the late 1990s with Cong. Don Young’s House Comm. on Insular Affairs.
Of course, there’s the well known Puerto Rico, Guam, Marshals, Virgins, ect…
But how many people have heard of Navassa Island? It’s a tiny island off the coast of Haiti of 2.7 square miles, made up entirely of Guano – I shit you not (pun intended.)
Then there’s the atolls of Seranilla Banks and Bajo Nuevo also in the Caribbean.
In the Pacific there’s the Johnston Atoll, Howard Island, Wake Island, Midway, and Palmyra.
All except Wake, and Midway are virtually uninhabited. (Johnston has approx. 180 Navy personnel and contractors.)
Why not send them to Navassa, or Palmyra, or Howard Island? They won’t be bothering anyone else, cause they only creatures who live there are iguanas, rats, scorpions and a few wild goats.

Well, equally distributed, that works out to $9,500 per to each Palauian. Yet some there might have other reasons for wanting terrorists found in Afghanistan to arrive in Palau:

The Blauains aren’t the hicks some might imagine.
Back in the 60’s LBJ et al had a problem with the then teritories in the pacific. Because of Bikini and Kwajalein they wanted to keep them under US control, but they also wanted to expand Kennedy’s Peace Corp and the island groups had requested them.
So a program was set up by the PC – the islanders flocked to it filled with high hopes of getting the “best and the brightest” – specifically people with leadership talent.
As usual, when the gov is at cross-purposes with its self, it opted for the lowest common denominator. The PC was instructed to can all those volunteers with leadership potential because they just might think about encouaging the Blauans et al to become independant. Send only the second best, prefferably the third tier just to be safe.
And so it was. Sersek er’a ka’sus – the snake is in the grass.
Having long experience with snakes and not particually liking them, the Islanders went balistic and within months declared their independance from the US.
“Stick it LBJ…”
And now with their booming economy, they are being asked once again to become vassels to the new Messiah… to take His lovely people of peace, whom the Chinese would be only to glad to greet with a club and use for organ donations.
I hope they are still as smart as they where 40 years ago.

200……200 MILLION dollars? Cripes, for that kind of scratch, they could have moved into my barn. And I could burn it down…and build a better barn, with a few bucks left over for private jets, yachts, and other etcetera’s.
DngrMse on June 9, 2009 at 9:10 PM
Dumb idea.
If they are “harmless” then let them apply for immigration.
If they are not…well, foisting them off on a very small country for mega-bucks seems a bit tacky, to say the least.
coldwarrior on June 9, 2009 at 9:21 PM
Great idea: Lets all email the Palau tourist bureau and tell them they can kiss goodbye to any of our tourist dollars ever if they import Al-Qaueda terrorists. We can really rub it in by publishing our letters on our blogs so we get everyone around the world involved. It’s only $200 million, shouldnt be long before they cave to the pressure and tell Obama they won’t accept the Uighers unless they come with reciporacal tourist visas to the United States.
paulsur on June 9, 2009 at 9:23 PM

Paul_in_NJ on June 9, 2009 at 9:25 PM
We released five Uighurs back in 2007 and they were resettled in Albania…sort of ironic, Albania, former Maoist state in the middle of Europe, but they’ve been accepted there, and seems logical to send the rest of them, the 17, to Albania as well.
A few weeks ago, the Christian Science Monitor had a story about one of the 2007 Uighurs. Interesting.
Albania accepted the first bunch…Bush said,m here they are…and lo and behold, they moved to Tirana.
Why won’t Albania accept the rest? Or, is there something about these particular Uighurs that the Administration isn’t talking about?
N’ahh, they wouldn’t do that, would they? Not tell us?

Why not deport them back to China? If these guys are martyrdom-seeking jihadis then it’s only a matter of time before they end up dead anyway. We are not doing them a favor by trying to save their lives. They might as well die in a Chinese prison camp. At least no innocent people will get killed in the process.
What were they doing in Afghanistan?

Holy Moly…I am of Palauan descent (U.S. Citizen) but raised in the island of Guam which is a U.S. Territory.. I am a police officer in the Guam Police Department and assigned to the Criminal Investigation Section..After reading this article, I am so disgusted with the Obama Administration…For the gall of them to try and bribe the Palauans to take in these Uigher terrorist…Who the hell came up with this idea?? Biden? Clinton? A teleprompter? Oprah? I guess no one has checked that Palau is very close to Indonesia and the Philippines which have their own problems with terrorists? In fact, Coastal Patrols in Palau have problems from citizens from aforementioned countries going into our territories… Whose to say that someone from aforementioned countries don’t go by boat and pick these 17 morons? That will be good if you think about it…Obama with his promises to close Gitmo is becoming desperate so he now has to bribe a small island? Cheeseesss!!! Cheney/Palin 2012!!!
