Study: Conservatives more likely to read opposing viewpoints than liberals

Further proof that we’re more open-minded. Or is it?
People with stronger party affiliation, conservative political views, and greater interest in politics proved more likely to click on articles with opposing views, according to the Ohio State study.
“It appears that people with these characteristics are more confident in their views and so they’re more inclined to at least take a quick look at the counterarguments,” Knobloch-Westerwick noted…
The Brigham Young University survey found that journalists also tended to read liberal blogs – perhaps a reflection of journalists’ political beliefs, although even conservatives said liberal blogs were often better-written, Davis pointed out.
Among the political blog readers, a similar trend emerged in which “liberals read almost exclusively liberal blogs, but conservatives tend to read both,” Davis said.
Davis offered another possible explanation for this trend among blog readers. Conservative views dominate talk radio, and so conservatives may feel more satisfied by that outlet and are willing to check out opposing views on blogs.
I prefer the “liberals are more likely to cocoon” explanation, but feel free to vote it out in the comments. Is this bravery, confidence, or media advantage at work? Given that every outlet except talk radio and Fox News is pushing Hopenchange on us, I’m guessing it’s not the last one. Exit question: Are lefty blogs better written? Be honest, notwithstanding the fact that my ego is on the line.

I read The Huffington Post, and The Democratic Underground. Huffington Post is pretty well laid out, kind of newspaper style, with more than one or two writers contributing to the blog. They don’t all drink the same amount of Kool-Aid, and some of the writers have more moderate views. However they don’t fact check much (come on, Google is only a click away…) and most posters will repeat the latest Democrat meme, and almost 100% of them rabidly fear (displayed by their hatred) Sarah Palin. Rumors take off on the site like wildfire at times, and are considered true even when proven false. This site will ban posters who regularly disagree with the Democrat Party meme.
The Democratic Underground is a basic tabloid repeater, with socialist/communist leanings, although more than a few are anarchists. Their blog posts are pretty simplistic and never stray from established memes. Posters run the gamut and commonly post murder/rape/death fantasies (this has been toned down lately, but still happens, wishing death on prominent Political and conservative figures is still rather prevalent). Fact has no meaning on DU, the more a fact is pointed out the more DU posters will rail against it.
Hot Air is kind of the opposite of the DU, the site is mostly a news repeater with the bloggers interjecting their oppinions of the news, but not really expressing their own views other than to agree or disagree and explain why. Posters are mostly conservative, with a smattering of centrists and libratarians. The occasional leftist poster joins but usually to throw out a Democrat meme and vanish. Hot Air allows dissent, sometimes encourages it. Hot Air does quite a bit of fact checking.
The Huffington Post is the most original as far as the blogs I visit goes. Hot Air is the most accurate. The Democrat Underground is for people who actually find the video series “Faces Of Death” intriguing, enter at your own risk.
To answer AP’s question: Huffington post is better written, and the authors are better at expressing their ideas.

Every single liberal I know “cocoons.” None of them ever read or listen to an opposing viewpoint. I didn’t need a survey to prove this.
As for the writing quality, I find absolutely no difference in actual writing skill. DailyKos (lib) has some terrible writing, didactic, angry, inarticulate. HuffPo (lib) is a mixed bag. AndrewSullivan (lib) is well written (it pains me to admit it). TheCorner (cons) is very well written. HotAir is clear and concise but not as much a blog as a media site.
AceofSpades (cons) is perhaps the best writer out there on either side of the aisle. He is wickedly funny, incisive and insightful.

Duh: The two statements directly contradict each other: Stupid is as stupid posts……..
This is a “combo stupid & dishonest crr6 post”: First Sarah was a ‘drag’; then she ‘energized the base’. Then crr6 misrepresents what happened in the campaign and repeats the Demo Talking Point about “increasingly suspect interviews”. The ’polling data’ cited is an article about campaign events which actually notes the significant help that Sarah has been for the Republican ticket—about a dozen paragraphs in.
So crr6 either lied about the linked article or was too stupid to understand its content and point of view.

I’m not a fan of lefty blogs. When people I follow throw a link, damn you Allah & Ed, I read them, but I don’t seek them out. I’ve read a couple pieces by Greg Sargent … meh. For some reason I just can’t think of any lefty bloggers, besides Tommy Christopher, that capture my attention. I know they say conservatives lack a sense of humor, but most liberal bloggers just aren’t very funny. If a piece lacks humor, I’m not interested.

Maybe because libs are about as tolerant of dissenting opinions (that aren’t theirs) as, say, the Bolsheviks?

Pastor, I disagree. Weak thinking skills don’t just show up overnight. They have to be deprived of sunlight and nourishment from junior high to create the dark and stunted opinions that show up in the lame stream media. What I witnessed was the students who saw comp and con as an obstacle got higher grades. Whereas students who saw it as a ticket to be punched did their best to coast.
