Palestinians use booby-trapped horses in terror attack

posted at 10:55 am on June 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Is it time to sic PETA on the Palestinians?  Or is the latest botched terrorist attack from Gaza a signal of desperation from Hezbollah, which just lost an election in Lebanon?  Actually, it might be both (emphasis mine):

Under the cover of morning fog, a group of around 10 Palestinian gunmen armed with “huge amounts of explosives” launched a failed Gaza border assault at the Karni Crossing on Monday, in which booby-trapped horses were used, a security source told the Jerusalem Post.

At least four terrorists were killed in an ensuing exchange of fire with the IDF. No Israeli soldiers were injured in the incident.

The terror cell belonged to the Janud Ansar Allah (Soldiers Loyal to Allah) organization, a small group which is linked to Iran and Hizbullah, the security source added.

Members of the cell, some of whom had suicide bomb belts strapped around their bodies, led the horses off of trucks and began planting explosive devices along the fence. They were identified by IDF soldiers on patrol, of Golani’s 13th Batallion. The gunmen proceeded to open fire on the troops, while mortar fire from deep within the Gaza Strip was also directed at the soldiers.

How foolish is this attack?  Well, it doesn’t take a genius to understand that huge animals strapped with anything won’t make logistics any easier.  The noise and the smell alone would tip off anyone in the area, especially at a heavily-trafficked crossing like Karni.  Instead of efficiently placing the explosives and mortars, the terrorists would have to handle the horses, making them visible enough even in a fog to get picked off.

Besides, why use horses?  Are horses haram?  No, they aren’t; indeed, horses are a valuable commodity, especially in an area like Gaza where agriculture is desperately needed.  The Palestinians haven’t lost any enthusiasm for cutting off their own noses to spite their faces.

And did the supposedly “responsible” wing of Hamas running Gaza say something like, “We cannot condone an attack from our territory,” or even “Man, what a bunch of idiots!”  Er, no:

Ismail Haniyeh, who heads Gaza’s Hamas government, praised the attackers as “martyrs,” and said the violence confirmed Israel’s “aggressive intentions” toward the Palestinians.

Which violence was that?  Strapping bombs to horses to run them across the border into Israel?  The firing of mortars on Israeli soldiers?  Shooting at the Israelis?  It would make a nice joke, if it weren’t for the fact that the rest of the world apparently agrees with Haniyeh.

All constituencies of the left come under the media double-standard and double-speak umbrella–it’s apparently boilerplate in the contract. And as usual, the media seems blissfully unaware it is precipitating a blowback that will be a game changer.

Surely thepoint is that nothing the Palestians do actually spites their faces. They get a pass, no matter what. They pay no price whatsoever, regardless of their actions, while Israel is pushed again and again to “make concessions to show their good faith”.

If we gave the Palestinians their own state with streets paved with gold – literally – the first thing many of them would do would be to tear the gold up, sell it for weapons and use them to attack Israel.

They don’t want their own state; they want Israel destroyed.

Until the people with guns and power among the Palestinians give up that goal, the Israelis can tear down every settlement ever built and it won’t change things.

SteveMG on June 8, 2009 at 11:53 AM

Please don’t. The Palestinians have also used Donkeys in this way. PETA strongly protested but didn’t say a damn thing about the fact that the Palestinians were using the animal to murder civilians.

capejasmine on June 8, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Ismail Haniyeh, who heads Gaza’s Hamas government, praised the attackers as “martyrs,” and said the violence confirmed Israel’s “aggressive intentions” toward the Palestinians.

If America had a real State Department, this statement BY ITSELF would be enough reason to declare Hamas an enemy of civilization. This doesn’t just violate some subjective view of “morality”. It is utterly antithetical to any possible set of rules by which humans can co-exist.

The most harcore moonbats are so lost to narcissistic subjectivism that they can ignore Hamas’ constant claims of undying hatred toward Israel because, “Hey, Israel hates Hamas too, right?”

But when Hamas comes out and officially states they consider Israel an “aggressor” BECAUSE Israel defends itself from a direct bombing attack, that’s it. Even moral relativism taken to its psychotic extreme can’t excuse that.

I’ve started pointing to leftists point blank that views on their Gaza are more like a insane religous belief than anything that can be justified by the secular use of evidence and logic.
