Oh my: GOP now leads Dems by six points on economy in Rasmussen

posted at 4:45 pm on June 8, 2009 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Yes, yes, the usual caveats about Rasmussen polls apply, but we do after all have some timely corroborating evidence on this.

I don’t want to freak out the HA faithful with uncharacteristic optimism but I’m starting to feel hope-y about this change-y.

This is the first time in over two years of polling that the GOP has held the advantage on this issue…

Republicans also now hold a six-point lead on the issue of government ethics and corruption, the second most important issue to all voters and the top issue among unaffiliated voters. That shows a large shift from May, when Democrats held an 11-point lead on the issue…

For the eighth straight month, Republicans lead on national security. The GOP now holds a 51% to 36% lead on the issue, up from a seven-point lead in May. They also lead on the war in Iraq 45% to 37%, after leading by just two points in May and trailing the Democrats in April…

Democrats continue to hold the lead on the issues of health care, Social Security and education. While Democrats have a 10-point advantage on health care, that’s down from the 18-point lead the party had a month ago.

Too good to check? I get why the Democrats’ lead on health-care might have eroded; the GOP’s congressional leadership and righty pundits have finally started to make some noise. I get why the national security spread might have widened too; thank Dick Cheney for that. What I don’t get is the spread on ethics. Why the huge swing? Murtha’s been in trouble lately for his lobbyist sleaze but that’s hardly a major national story. Pelosi’s hedging about waterboarding probably hurt but that would seem to speak more to national security than to a classic ethical issue. Smells like Rasmussen simply might have gotten a bum sample here. Am I wrong? Convince me, please; I want to believe. Exit quotation from via Frank Fleming: “If the GOP is smart, they should build on this to create or save a political party.”

I’d like to see several more months of positive data before I start the cartwheels. However, it seems that actually doing stuff is a lot harder than promising unicorns. If the economy doesn’t turn by the end of the year, midterms could be very good to the GOP.

Chuck Schick,
the initial thought is that its defecits plus “green shoots” as people leave bonds to find better prospects. And it is starting to get out there. Look at Bernake the other day, even Krugman, (although he will never admit its about Obama) has written on possible inflation as a way to protect position himself and the left in case of a real massacre in the bond market.

BacaDog on June 8, 2009 at 4:56 PM

What’s really amazing to me about this poll is that they say they “trust the GOP more,” but who in the hell is the GOP? For all intents and purposes, there is no GOP right now, and any ideas the Congressional leadership has aren’t getting through the media Obama orgy. What it means then is that they trust the GOP more because they don’t trust the dems — whom they know quite well — at all. It’s like they’ve chosen what’s behind curtain No. 2 — the unknown prize — because the one behind curtain No. 1, which they’ve seen, sucks so much. I like that.

Rational Thought on June 8, 2009 at 4:56 PM

What I don’t get is the spread on ethics. Why the huge swing?

Ethics covers national security, domestic issues, etc.
I believe Pelosi’s “they lied to me” was the tip of the iceberg, considering her polling numbers over the past few weeks. I also believe the unemployment 9.4% really hit home, to the effect many are saying “hey man – you lied to me”.

Lets not forget – Dems promised “the most ethical congress ever” and Oabama ran along those lines.

Lastly – I think its easier for people to blame ethics than their own stupidity in believing “The One” I would like to see a question to Obama voters “would you vote for him again” as of today…

aero on June 8, 2009 at 5:09 PM

I think it would be prudent to use a little honey here or 2010 ramp up for that matter.

People instinctively don’t like to be proven wrong – so instead of saying “told you so” – we should embrace the non left nutjobs with “we understand you wanted change – but it was change for the worse, we have heard you and will act accordingly.” Or something to that effect. Then imput conservative values as if that is the logical next step and not simply an “us vs them”.

Just my 2 1/2 cents…

2 Dems seem to be switching their vote to caucus with the GOP’ers. From what I can tell it may be tied to Tom Golisano, billionaire and soon to be former NY State resident. He has a PAC that donated tons to Dems (and some Reps) and says the Dem leadership didn’t keep it’s promises about reform in the Senate.

About ethics… I think Pelosi is bigger than the CIA thing alone. She said she would clean things up.

When someone claims to be the sheriff and then stands in front of the cameras and flat out lies. Her body language alone was appallingly clear.

She was the main source for saying how corrupt the Republicans were, especially Cheney. Now anyone would be a fool to believe anything out of her mouth! There are plenty of fools in this country but not as many as she needs.

bloggless on June 8, 2009 at 5:35 PM

Allah, someone else has probably said this, but I didn’t have time to read through all of the comments . . . Republicans likely lead Dems in this poll on ethics for a variety of reasons–mainly I think Obama’s policies, which are far less popular than Obama, not because of specific scandals with members of Congress.. First, the stimulus–it was sold as necessary for our economic recovery, but most realize now that it was just a big spending bill for pet Dem projects. Then, you have the gov’t takeover of GM and Chrysler and Obama gave huge chunks of these companies to the Unions. More and more stories are coming out, too, about closing of dealerships and nobody can explain why profitable dealerships are being forced to close while unprofitable ones are allowed to stay open–whatever the reason, it looks like they are picking political favorites. Not only is it unethical, but it may very well be illegal.

You also had Obama talking about fiscal responsibility in the run-up to the election and since his inauguration, but he has been anything but fiscally responsible. Bailing out people who can’t pay their mortgages doesn’t sit well with most people no matter what their political persuasion.

And, I haven’t even touched on national security and Obama’s instinct to reach out to thugs and dictators while giving our allies the cold shoulder. People know that is wrong.

reallyfive on June 8, 2009 at 5:37 PM

What I don’t get is the spread on ethics. Why the huge swing?

Hmmm….
…. a tax cheat heading the Fed
…. an attorney general who drops the case against armed thugs caught on tape intimidating voters in Phila
…. an administration that shuts down republican-leaning car dealers, despite their demonstrated profitability in an economic downturn
…. apologizing to the world for our involvement in a couple of world wars
…. Blaming the previous president for everything that’s going wrong right now

Gee, I don’t know why people would have a problem the dem’s ethics either!
