Oh my: GOP now leads Dems by six points on economy in Rasmussen
posted at 4:45 pm on June 8, 2009 by Allahpundit
Yes, yes, the usual caveats about Rasmussen polls apply, but we do after all have some timely corroborating evidence on this.
I don’t want to freak out the HA faithful with uncharacteristic optimism but I’m starting to feel hope-y about this change-y.
This is the first time in over two years of polling that the GOP has held the advantage on this issue…
Republicans also now hold a six-point lead on the issue of government ethics and corruption, the second most important issue to all voters and the top issue among unaffiliated voters. That shows a large shift from May, when Democrats held an 11-point lead on the issue…
For the eighth straight month, Republicans lead on national security. The GOP now holds a 51% to 36% lead on the issue, up from a seven-point lead in May. They also lead on the war in Iraq 45% to 37%, after leading by just two points in May and trailing the Democrats in April…
Democrats continue to hold the lead on the issues of health care, Social Security and education. While Democrats have a 10-point advantage on health care, that’s down from the 18-point lead the party had a month ago.
Too good to check? I get why the Democrats’ lead on health-care might have eroded; the GOP’s congressional leadership and righty pundits have finally started to make some noise. I get why the national security spread might have widened too; thank Dick Cheney for that. What I don’t get is the spread on ethics. Why the huge swing? Murtha’s been in trouble lately for his lobbyist sleaze but that’s hardly a major national story. Pelosi’s hedging about waterboarding probably hurt but that would seem to speak more to national security than to a classic ethical issue. Smells like Rasmussen simply might have gotten a bum sample here. Am I wrong? Convince me, please; I want to believe. Exit quotation from via Frank Fleming: “If the GOP is smart, they should build on this to create or save a political party.”

What????
Lying about being lied to is a huge ethical issue.
Also, I think most Americans trust the integrity of our military and national agencies. They don’t like to see those being attacked by politicians.

The American electorate committed an act of unspeakable recklessness and stupidity in 2008. Not only did they roll the dice by electing the blank slate Obama. They doubled down on that bet by putting in a 60% rubber stamp majority in both houses of Congress. No hedging of bets on a complete blank slate for them. You tell me we live in a dangerous world where WMD can be brought into the country in a suitcase? Ah, who cares. Don’t bother me, I wanna feel good.
I don’t put any credence in this Rasmussen poll. It was just measuring how the electorate “feels” at one point in time. Don’t get too upbeat for 2010. In the words of Al Campanis, the majority of the American people (of all races) don’t have “the necessities” to figure out that printing oodles of money and running 2 trillion yearly deficits might lead to fiscal ruin. The Chinese and Indians are going to kill us economically in the future. I really am ashamed to be an American.
chris999 on June 8, 2009 at 7:34 PM
I’d like to believe that, but then I just witnessed 53% of the voters in a Presidential election vote for a ticket with a radical leftist with no experience and a career Senator who is a bona fide imbecile.
So it will take some doing to reorient.

I think this is our best hope yet. I hope that some competent Republicans (both centrist and conservative) can take back congress in 2010 if not gradually in 2010 and then 2012. I don’t see any formidable candidates out there for president, so in my opinion Obama will be reelected. We just have to hope that Congress switches to Republican majority or at least is no longer centimeters close to a Dem filibuster-proof majority.

I’m confused why people still doubt Rasmussen. For the past decade, Rasmussen and Pew have reliably been the two most accurate pollsters on national issues – far more accurate than Gallup, Quinnipiac, and the various WSJ/NBC and other polls. If Rasmussen and Pew say something, I pay attention. Gallup and the rest still oversample Democrats by double digits, or even worse, use self-identification and no weighting.

Even though Bush may have started the whole GM “bailout”, the GM and Chrysler fiasco is on Obama’s head. He gave them more money and then afterwards he forced them into bankruptcy anyway.
We are at 9.4% unemployment (realistically we are at least at 10%) and GM and Chrysler aren’t even officially “restructured” yet.
Obama officially has nobody else to blame anymore. He may have wanted to get as much done as quickly as possible and at the same time have the ability to blame Bush, but Americans are more about quantity than time and we are impatient.
Meaning since he’s done so much in less than 6 months, it’s like he’s been in office for 2 years (especially given the amount of TV time he gets) and people have pretty much forgotten about Bush.
There’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide now Bambi. The time is ticking down on your time bombs. You may have thought you set them for 15:00 minutes, but you actually put the timer in upside down and set them for 00:51 seconds (Futurama reference).

This news does not amount to anything if the RINOS in the
Senate remain RINOS.Pressure must be exerted by the Republican leaders on these people to fall in line. Also the blue dog Dems must be convinced that their chances for reelection are in peril if they go along with Obama’s cap and trade and socialist healthcare proposals. The RNC must adopt a more aggressive stance against Obama’s policies, calling them what they are; socialist policies that are ruining this geat country. Stating this, however, I have very little faith in our Republican leaders to attack, attack, attack!
Big Nicholas on June 9, 2009 at 9:58 AM
Bush gave bailout money (which I disagreed with at the time) but that was really done in coordination with the filthy liar’s incoming administration and viewed as a stop-gap measure during the transition. It is a huge leap from bailout to the American public essentially owning two of the three big American auto companies and more than a few financial institutions.
Frankly, I think Obama thought he could steamroll decades of pent-up socialism through in a matter of months and spend the rest of his time conducting mop up operations and consolidating the unprecedent power grab by American domestic enemies (aka Democrats). By this time he wanted complete no-penalty amnesty for all the illegals ACORN brought to the polls, he wanted to nationalize healthcare, slap more taxes on the producers, and up the benefits for all the idlers who voted the man into office.

What is up with you Neo-Cons? You’ll jump at the slightest opportunity to convince the people of this country that everything we know to be true is not really happening. You distort every ounce of news you disseminate to the masses and then have the audacity to believe you’re right. You justify everything you do by claiming to be “Christians”, but when I read my Bible, it talks about the compassion (which is a word that no one would ever use in the same sentence with the GOP)that Jesus had for those less fortunate than others. It’s also explicit in it’s condemnation of those who love money more than God or their fellow brothers and sisters. If you listen to the right’s rhetoric, all they talk about is their $money$. They don’t care about people. They care about how people are effecting their money. I wonder what the Lord would really have to say to a group of self-righteous, money-loving, merciless, racially exclusive bigots? Oh yeah; He already said it. He called them hypocrites.

Better:
If the GOP was a political party they could build on this
The RINO gameplan:
That is the ongoing stragey now. It fails because a party has to grow from ideology. A party that chases ideology from the polls has no premise except vote getting. The voters know this and ultimately know they are expendable with the next poll
The GOP can win a voter rebellion election, but they will suffer the same fate as Obama, who did win a voter rebellion election. The polls knows

Nice try there. If you knew me, you would know that I am a Christian and I despise government assistance. Not because I don’t agree with helping people, but because the “church” and individuals are the ones that are supposed to help people, not government.
As much as I don’t want to get into what’s going on in my life right now, I must to show that I am not saying this because I am well off. My wife and I are struggling and we are staying with one of her friends. She wants out and so do I, but she’s thinking about applying for assistance from the government and I can’t stand the thought right now. I have been applying to a ton of jobs and I have a few that are promising (waiting on results after the interviews). Anyway, I am just praying and trying my best to do anything I can to get out of the situation we are in now, but to not use government assistance.
Things have not exactly turned out the way I had hoped and planned, but I still do not want to take government money. In my eyes, that is worse than only eating one meal a day.

Interesting post today on repubx.com –
There was an interesting e-mail from someone the other day that gives a plausible reason why Michelle didn’t go to Saudi Arabia or Turkey.
“I was at a [video store] on Saturday renting videos, and as I was going along the wall, there was a video called ‘Obama’. I told the two men next to me that I wouldn’t waste my time. We talked about Obama. These guys were Arabs and I asked them why they thought Michele Obama headed home following her visit in France instead of traveling on to Saudi Arabia and Turkey with her husband.
They told me she couldn’t go to Saudi Arabia, Turkey or Iraq. I said ‘Laura Bush went to Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Dubai.’ They said that Obama is a Muslim, and by Muslim law he would not be allowed to bring his wife into countries that accept Sharia Law. Just thought it was interesting that two Arabs at [the video store] accept the idea that we’re being ‘led’ by a Muslim who follows the Islamic creed. They also said that’s the reason he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia. It was a signal to the Muslim world.”
But for some good news, the tide may just be starting to turn…but notice the MSM reaction!

Republicans Seize Control of State Senate
By Jeremy W. Peters AND Danny Hakim. NYT
State Senate revoltRob Bennett for The New York Times; Suzanne DeChillo/The New York Times Two state senators — Pedro Espada Jr. of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens — moved to defect to the Republican side, which would end Democratic control of the chamber.
Updated, 5:14 p.m. | ALBANY – Republicans seized control of the New York State Senate on Monday, in a stunning and sudden reversal of fortunes for the Democratic Party, which controlled the chamber for barely five months.
A raucous leadership fight erupted on the floor of the Senate around 3 p.m., with two Democrats, Pedro Espada Jr. of the Bronx and Hiram Monserrate of Queens, joining the 30 Senate Republicans in a motion that would displace Democrats as the party in control.
It was a noisy and acrimonious scene on the floor of the Senate as Senator Thomas W. Libous, a Republican from Binghamton and the party’s deputy leader, shouted for a roll-call vote, while Democrats attempted to stall the vote by asking to adjourn the session.
All 30 Republicans stood with their hands raised, signaling a vote for a change in leadership. Mr. Espada and Mr. Monserrate joined them, each raising his hand. Republicans won the vote by a 32-to-30 margin. The Senate will now be governed under a new joint leadership structure, with Mr. Espada serving as the president pro tempore, and Senator Dean G. Skelos, of Long Island, as the new majority leader.
After the results of the vote were read aloud, the in-house television station that carries Senate proceedings live in the Capitol went dark. All that appeared on the screen was a still photo of the Senate chamber and the words “Please stand by.”

Bottom line is until we get out of the globel economy and stop foreign goods and energy from coming to Our shores, This Nation will soon collapse. When our jobs go over seas then the middleclasses share is taken by the rich! How can we compete with 1.3 billion Chinses and 1.1 billion Indians when they make 2-10 dollars a day? We owe the Chinses 1 trillion dollars, and they use this money to build up their military to take us on one day! The madness is so thick with both parties and the rich elite! The answer is simple, stop selling out your own for a profit! Thankyou have a day…

Gingrich has some good ideas, but given his baggage, we need someone else to express them and win the House.
The massive deficits, high unemployment, and abuse of power in the Chrysler and GM nationalization will all be held against Democrats, which will get worse if nationalized health-care or cap-and-trade on CO2 is passed. The GOP message needs to be tax cuts, spending cuts, fiscal responsibility, and private-enterprise solutions to national problems, willing to stand up to enemies in foreign policy, and pro-life on social issues. Since the House initiates all revenue bills, the GOP taking back the House would cut off Obama’s money spigot, and the economic and tax issues need to be hammered home by every GOP House candidate in 2010.
Who should be the leader and spokesman for such a movement? I nominate Mitt Romney. Any seconds?
If the Republicans do take back the House in 2010, they’ll have to practice what they preach, unlike 2005-06. Forget the K Street Project–just do your job for your country. But they’ve got to win first.
Still, Obama’s blaming the Republicans for over-spending will soon sound very hollow, when he and the Democrats have quadrupled the deficit in one year. This needs to be repeated over and over from now through 2010!
Steve Z on June 9, 2009 at 3:04 PM
In case you haven’t noticed, the Left only cares about people as exploitable voting blocks to whom they promise the world and give worse than nothing in return.
GOP favorability will keep climbing as the Obama administration’s misguided policies send unemployment, interest rates, and gas prices soaring higher. The policies are rubbish and are finally starting to be unmasked as such.
BTW, now that the price of gas is going up again, who is Nancy Pelosi blaming? The “oilmen” in the White House?
Really, I want to know. Who is she blaming now?

So you think Jesus would approve of you and Obama destroying America in the name of buying votes? You think stealing GM from the shareholders (as part of the 401k’s owned by “little people”) and giving it to the UAW (which is arguably the biggest reason GM is bankrupt) as a campaign kickback is a good thing?
You really think impoverishing me (and millions of breadwinners like me) to the point we can’t take care of our own families is a good thing?
Grow up and get a job and pay for yourself. Unless you’re a widow or an orphan, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF! I’ve got news for you (remember this when you become an adult) liberalism (socialism) is only pretty when you live in an ivory tower (i.e. college). It’s really ugly in the real world.

The pole only means one thing…that we’re growing increasingly dissatisfied with how President Obama is handling the economy. Ask anyone on the street or even on Wall Street if they know who the GOP leadership consists of. It’s not anything that the Republicans are doing but all about what Pres Obama is messing up. What have the Republicans done for the economy? Obviously, they can’t do much at this point because of their own doing, and if they are making progress somehow they surely aren’t doing a whole lot to inform someone like me who pays attention. Their PR continues to be a joke. Sure, the lefty media doesn’t help, but they have to get the message out. If I have to dig for it, they’re once again not doing their job. How disfunctional can one party be? The Dems are visibly disfunctional, but they get a pass because of the media left. The Right is just invisible to me. Who knows what they’re doing. It’s a feat that the Right is ahead in the economy, but it’s obviously more due to frustration with Pres Obama’s policies than it is with quantifiable positive economic results from the GOP.
