Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:04 am on June 8, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Someone call Evan Thomas and let him know that I may owe him an apology. This weekend, I derided Newsweek’s editor for calling Barack Obama “sort of God,” but it turns out that he’s not the only one with that opinion. President Obama suggested that he may even exceed Undoubting Thomas’ expectations in answering a question from the European press:
On Saturday, a reporter asked the president whether Europe was low on his priority list, following newspaper reports he turned down a private dinner with the French president after 65th anniversary D-Day commemorations.
“I have a very tough schedule and I would love nothing more than to have a leisurely week in Paris, stroll down the Seine, take my wife out to a nice meal, have a picnic in Luxembourg Gardens,” Obama said, pointing out that he was caught up in dealing with the pressing financial crisis at home.
If Obama plans on “walking down the Seine,” I hope he can swim. The Seine is the river that runs through Paris. It’s a tremendously clueless claim — unless, of course, Obama believes he can walk on water. After Thomas’ remarks, it’s apparent that some members of the national press already believe it.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Ed, you misssed the whole point here. Ths issue isn’t that OB can walk on water, it’s the fact that he has changed the Seine River into a street.

Tough schedule…I’d like to know when he’s going to get to work! He’s done nothing but play since he got in office.

Barry just reminded the peeps that he is a very busy man and his attention is a precious commodity. This can be verified by the two American reporters in North Korea.

I dunno Ed. Walk down the Seine vs walk along the Seine…
This is like saying he’s gonna fly home. Not that big a deal.
C’mon man, it’s only 8:14est, he’s got PLENTY of time for a really good Obamateurism. Give the man a chance (gag, did I just type that?!).
I’m gonna take a stab at today’s Obamateurism and bet that he and/or Gibbs & Axelrod go w Zakaria’s article that claims success in Iraq is because of Obama. It makes a great distraction. It’s already in the msm. It makes ABC beat their chests. It maintains the halo of holiness image. And it rings of good news on a day filled w bad. Yeah, it’s mostly false (all he did to bring success to Iraq was stop opposing success), but I think this one’s got the most legs today. Then again, no way NO WAY is Tapper gonna ask him Gibbs about it at the presser.

An old Billy Joel song from the Piano Man Album, had a song in it with a reference to The Seine. The catch phrase in the song was “And you know it’s gonna catch up to you somewhere along the line”. In Obama’s case, I sure hope so. Soon. Very Soon.

A few days ago, he mused that he missed the life of simple pleasures:
The only problem is, Obama never had a dog.

ROTFLMAO… Sarkozy did say that Obama was a rank amateur at politics and that it was really starting to show, so Obama as if in an heroic effort to prove Sarkozy right, refuses to have dinner with Sarkozy and instead talks about his ability to walk on water… You just cant make this kind of $hit up…
doriangrey on June 8, 2009 at 8:32 AM
Nah…that one is just getting a bit too picky.
A better one would be why didn’t Obama take his Uncle to visit Buchenwald concentration camp?
Because the truth is that during WWII his Uncle did not go to the Buchenwald concentration camp, but rather, as the European press put it, “a satellite camp of Buchenwald”.
Read the news item in the German newspaper, Bild.
Buchenwald administered at least 88 subcamps located across Germany.
So Obama goes to Buchenwald on the pretense that his Uncle helped “liberate” this concentration camp. However, his Uncle was never at the concentration camp Obama visited.

While the unemployed in the US worry about how they will be caring for and feeding their families months from now THE WON-ONE flys HIS family to Paris so he can buy them dinner. He does that with the taxes of the future unemployed.
He WON. That is all that matters to him. If he wants to “stroll down the Seine” he can. It’s your dollar to be sent in, but it’s HIS to spend as he desires.
Yoop on June 8, 2009 at 8:36 AM
The French have a 35-hour work week and 8-week vacation time. Obama thinks he’s French. He’s just getting the vacation time in, along with the short work-week, right up front.
Quit whining and quit wondering. Just pay up so the ONE’s family can get on with their next planned dinner outing.

oldernwiser on June 8, 2009 at 8:58 AM
What utter rubbish, Obama is purported to be exceptionally well educated, a well educated individual would have said “Walk along the Seine” not down the Seine.
It’s that very obvious failure to apply the correct usage to a phrase made world famous by authors of the romantic era such as Hemingway that makes this a Obamateurism.

oldernwiser on June 8, 2009 at 9:01 AM
Oh, as to the strolling (how enchanting), I have never said I was going to walk down a river. I’ve never heard it used that way by anyone either. I’d have to see some kind of poll on the usage of that in all 57 states.
TugboatPhil on June 8, 2009 at 9:01 AM
Sorry, Ed, no sale. I get the whole “what if Bush had said it” thing, but I think we should get over Bush as well.
Barry’s nincompoop, and provides lots of material; the whole garbled “Speech to the World’s Muslims” was a massive assault on logic and recorded history and was very revealing of the Zero’s intellectual vacuity. “Walking down the Seine” doesn’t even move the Obamateurism needle in comparison.

Notre Dame Cathedral on Saturday evening. Dining out Saturday night at a no-star bistro, La Fontaine de Mars (with a food taster no less!). Sunday morning, it was the Pompidou Center as well as a Sunday visit to the gilded Elysee presidential palace. After Daddy flew home, Michelle and the girls went shopping.
Too bad he didn’t try the “walking on water” deal. I would have liked to see him flounder and possibly drown in the filthy Seine.

Paul_in_NJ on June 8, 2009 at 9:52 AM
So why all the travel and playtime? The man has been out of Washington more than in it since taking over (and destroying) the Presidency. Factor in that he’s always taking a couple hours off for burger runs and spending half-a-million taking his support entourage to NYC for a play and one begins to question just how serious the filthy liar is about focusing on the economy.
highhopes on June 8, 2009 at 10:02 AM
A Harvard-trained lawyer should be more precise in his language. The above comment is mostly right but the fact of the matter is that words have meanings and how do we know that the next gaffe from the filthy liar isn’t going to result in some untoward consequences.
highhopes on June 8, 2009 at 10:16 AM
while the verbal gaffe is amusing, far more disturbing is obama’s reluctance to sit down with one of our allies for dinner, using a lame excuse of being too busy to get out of it. it is comparable to saying “i have to wash my hair” to get out of a date. taking an hour or two to sit down with an allied leader over a meal is not difficult and a lot of business can be conducted in the more informal setting.

Another error is the “have a picnic in Luxembourg Gardens”.
Most of the fancy parks in Paris have keep of the grass rules.
There are plenty of seats along the walkways and places to eat at the Luxembourg Gardens. But a picnic, in the grass?
albill on June 8, 2009 at 10:37 AM
“Down” can be construed as “down along.” “I strolled down 5th Avenue” doesn’t mean one is standing in the traffic.
But the funny thing is as the article reports, Barry did find the time “to take [his] wife out to a nice meal” — specifically to the bistro La Fontaine de Mars according to the Agence France Press. Barry tells the room he can’t go out to see Sarkozy because he’s so busy he can’t even take his wife out to dinner and thereupon leaves the room and promptly takes his wife out to dinner. What a weasel. The proprietors of La Fontaine de Mars report that Barry and Michelle hung out and relaxed for 45 minutes after the meal was over — you know, like a real busy man would. So, as usual, Barry was lying his ass off and didn’t even put any effort into the lie.
shazbat on June 8, 2009 at 10:39 AM
I think you’ve hit on a truth there. Obama would have found time to attend a lavish state dinner with all the pomp, press, and protocol. But just going to dinner when he can be seen being cool at some bistro with lots of big windows so the paparazzi get clear views of the First Grifters coming and going? No contest.
It became clear from day one that the Obamas like all the trappings of the Presidency even though the filthy liar is utterly unfit for office. Why should that or a bad economy take away from blowing $500K of taxpayer money to take his wife to Broadway.
P.S. I wonder just how much those runs out to burger places are costing us.

I’m with Ed on this one, and it perfectly fits the man who claimed he would slow the oceans from rising.
He should have said “stroll by the Seine” or “stroll along the Seine”. When at the beach, would you say “I’m going to walk down the ocean”? No, you’d say, “I’m going to take a walk along (or on) the beach or “by (or along) the ocean”.
All the decades I lived in NYC, I guarantee you I never said I was going to ‘stroll down the East River’ or ‘walk down the Hudson’, but I’m sure there were times I said I was going to walk down to the river.

So what happens in August when official Washington all goes on vacation. The Bush 43 family headed to Crawford with much bleating from the press (because August in a small town outside of Waco isn’t a vacation to the WH journalists) The Clintons stayed at whatever Hollywood type was willing to give up a beach house in the Hamptons or a lodge in Montana for their gratis use (and the press loved it because they got to hang out with all the liberals who have infested such places).
So, are we to believe that this guy who snubs the French President as being too busy to share a meal is going to be working in August? I guess the economy will be all fixed by then.
