U.S. News: “Obama’s flip-flops for the public good”

posted at 8:25 pm on June 5, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Ace, who sees this for the naked ex ante rationalization of tax hikes that it is. The worse the coverage gets, the more I think that the one silver lining in having Obama serve two terms will be watching the media discredit itself for twice as long. Even lefty magazines now admit openly how deeply in the tank the press is for its hero. What will it be like in 2016? What credibility will be left?

Overall, however, Obama has been praised for his flexibility, not condemned for his flip-flops. One reason, pollsters say, is that he seems such a contrast to the still-unpopular Bush, who was the opposite–stubborn and set in his ways. “When presented with a tough problem where a change of course was called for, Bush just dug in. He felt that it was weakness to change his mind,” says a senior Democratic strategist. He cites Bush’s positions to limit stem cell research, oppose legislation expanding healthcare for children, enact partial privatization of Social Security, and pursue the Iraq war. In contrast, he says, “Obama is willing to change course if he feels it’s needed. The American people will still support him if he is not seen as doing it for political reasons.”…

In the end, Americans will understand and accept a president who changes course, as long as he does it for the public good or to acknowledge new realities, not for crass partisan reasons or to curry favor with particular interest groups. But there is hell to pay if a president breaks a fundamental promise and can’t justify it. Perhaps the best example is George H. W. Bush, who violated his “read my lips–no new taxes” pledge from the 1988 campaign. Partly as a result, Bush lost his re-election bid in 1992.

I.e. lying to get elected = “pragmatism.” Incidentally, is promising not to raise taxes on people who make less than $250,000 a year “a fundamental promise”? I’ve got a crazy hunch we’re going to find out it’s not, just like we’ll find out that inexplicably changing one’s position on whether soldiers in Iraq have died in vain is due to something other than “political reasons.” Seriously, not that I’m not any paragon of integrity, but I’m willing at least to defend even people who have smeared my business on national television when I think they’re right. Neither Michelle nor Ed nor I have held back from knocking the GOP when warranted either (as a cursory glance at the comments to many posts will prove), even though it’s against our political interest to do so. How can it be that big media is even more slanted than we are when we’re an overtly partisan right-wing site? How low can they go?

Actually, this low. Click the image to watch.

Obama is the most powerful man in history. He’s too big to fail, so the MSM has to give him a bail-out once in a while.

He destroyed the economy for our good. That was a valuable defense initiative, because he rightly assumed that nobody would attack us if our economy collapsed.

Unfortunately, radical Islam was so angry about Bush and Gitmo that they nuked New York and LA anyway. There was nothing our great leader could do about that.

The MSM, to their discredit, are still calling themselves news organizations. It’s now clear that they aren’t…they’re shills for Obama and the Democrats. They’ve let the mask finally slip because only a retard or overt, disingenuous lefty partisan will claim otherwise at this point.

The funny thing is…this is proof that they’ve been lying for the past 30 years, but they still expect people to believe them when they make the claim…now it can be told and they are telling it every day. It’s like discovering that the Rosenbergs really were spying for the Soviets. Oh well, we knew it all along, but at least they are lying about in a less convincing way than ever now.

his shtick is he’s the teacher. He’s the teacher. He is going to say, ‘now, children, stop fighting and quarreling with each other.’ And he has a kind of a moral authority that he – he can – he can do that-

From the transcript at the link. Please give me a break.

Nobody is taking Obama seriously on the world stage. He’s bowing in Saudi Arabia, Chinese students are laughing at his Treasury Secretary, and Clinton gave Russia an “overcharge” button.

He’s only a “teacher” on the world stage in his own mind, and in the sycophantic media.

As to the Reagan comparisons- get back to me when Carter II has fixed stagflation and successfully driven the other superpower into bankruptcy and political collapse.

They’re doing it on purpose. It’s a technique in Saul Alinksy’s “Rules for Radicals”.

The idea is that if they bombard the news with annoying things every day, then their enemies can never latch onto one issue and fight it. The next crazy thing takes attention away from the previous crazy thing they did. As long as they keep up the pressure, they get away with murder.

Daggett on June 5, 2009 at 8:56 PM

Bush was not stuborn. Leader make decisions and to be leaders, they stick to those decisions based upon their closely held values. Bush valued this country and what it stands for. Obama does not. Who else would call this the greatest nation on earth then suggest we immediately change it? Obama’s only closely held value is power. The more he has the less we have. I think it is time to check the powder and shot to make sure there is enough for an emergency.

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on June 5, 2009 at 8:59 PM

This – Obama’s flipping and flopping – is just another example of Dionne’s brilliant observation that the press is conservatively tilted.

As Obama moves to the right from the left – abandoning the progressives who elected him – he is garnering praise from the MSM. The conservative-dominated press is applauding these rightward maneuvers.

Oy. That hurt just typing it.

Don’t be surprised if Dionne or Alterman et al. promote this line soon.

Even Thomas is a lefty for sure, but he is usually a little more clear-headed about things. I remember he actually defended Bush after Katrina, noting that the federal government is too big to move fast on anything.

Maybe his point is that Obama is trying to be like God, as opposed to Obama is God…

His ratings are slipping. He’s going to take more broadsides over his SCOTUS nominee and he’s going to hit hard on healthcare. If he’s bold enough to go for Cap and Trade it’s going to be comical.

The fall is coming – it’s going to be hard. I don’t see how the State Controlled Media is going to escape getting hit with it either – but you never know.

When the fall comes, the SCM (what we used to call the MSM) will surely turn on him; gently first, then with increasing fury. They will be shocked (shocked!) by the excesses they originally celebrated. They will then proclaim their dismay at being misled by him, and try to cloak themselves in whatever taters are left of their so-called “journalistic ethics.”

They will be naked, then; there’s nothing left to hide them.

A hollowed wasteland? Obama needs to be gone sooner than that. Preferably before 2012 by impeachment. It should be the openly stated purpose of the Republican Party during the 2010 elections to gain the required votes in Congress to throw Obama out of office.

I don’t think going after Obama personally is a winning strategy now or for 2010. Instead, I want Republicans to advocate conservative issues, then simply contrast them with the words and actions of Democrats. On issue after issue, Republican positions win. But we do poorly on charisma and popularity, of which Obama apparently has plenty.

We know the media is going to look for every possible sound bite from Republicans to cast us as ignorant, racist, fascist, etc. And threatening to impeach their “god,” or even dare to criticize him, will energize them and their minions. So, keeping it as a civil discussion of issues can defuse at least some of that.

So, Republicans state they are for reducing the deficit, stopping government squeezing the private sector for money instead of helping them produce jobs, improving national security, supporting the military, etc., then show how the policies and actions of Democrats don’t favor these issues. American’s aren’t stupid. They know that one and one equals two. Obama’s popularity and power will decline. A Republican Senate will be able toi slow down his agenda quite dramatically.

Yeah, but that doesn’t mean WE have to quit fighting the good fight. The alternative is to just surrender and let our nation die.

This couple who was arrested today for spying for Cuba ( Soviets, China via Cuba ) were instructed thirty years ago by the Cuban agent to get a job at the State Department and the husband made his way up the ladder to gain access to more and more confidential material. These people get the jobs because they are more motivated than anyone else to get the jobs. It’s likely that they are more motivated than you or I to become Senators and Presidents as well. Even Republican Senators and Presidents. We got to get control of this matter quickly.

Buddahpundit on June 5, 2009 at 10:03 PM

The really sad thing is that we, as a country, need the media watchdog. We need them to hold all our elected officials accountable, write the stories that will make politicians shun them. The death of the public’s trust of the media is just as bad for the nation as it is for the media we now distrust.

The really maddening thing is that today’s ‘journalists’ are willing to betray and destroy their entire profession just to suck at a politicians tit.

Monsieur Thomas also garonteed before the fact that his fellow objective media critters would totally go in the tank for Jeanne-Claude Kerri in 2004.

As I recall, Evan said their fellatio would give Pepe le Pew 10-15 percentage oints against Chimpy.

Dad gum, he nailed it right on. Josef Goebbels would be proud of him.

The worse the coverage gets, the more I think that the one silver lining in having Obama serve two terms will be watching the media discredit itself for twice as long.
Please — and I say this as a friend — don’t be an idiot.

Jim Treacher on June 5, 2009 at 10:31 PM

Only if an ACORN does not fall far from the tree…or gets indicted. This country cannot fall for this fool again.
WE MUST RESIST THE WILLFUL DESTRUCTION OF OUR COUNTRY BY THE LEFT AND OUR MEDIA.

dthorny on June 5, 2009 at 10:59 PM

The idea is that if they bombard the news with annoying things every day, then their enemies can never latch onto one issue and fight it. The next crazy thing takes attention away from the previous crazy thing they did. As long as they keep up the pressure, they get away with murder.

Notice how Pelosi and her CIA issues have fallen completely off the radar, even on righty blogs?

It’s working.

Sorry, i’m not clicking on a Evan Thomas picture…but from Merriam Webster dictionary:

Bias

an inclination of temperament or outlook ; especially : a personal and sometimes unreasoned judgment

I think what we’ve seen is that the press is Left-Wing. It’s not just an inclination there…they are Lefties. They want to be close to the seat of power, the centralized command and control type of power.

They want to be part of the governing structure of the US. The voice of the “people” who want the US to be:

…transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives.

r keller on June 5, 2009 at 11:03 PM

“For the public good” is something that one would hear as a propaganda slogan…about 40 years ago?

And only from such media outlets as Radio Moscow, Radio Habana Cuba, Radio Peking, Voice of Vietnam, Radio Pyongyang, and so on.

Have I forgotten anyone? I’ve forgotten Radio Tirana!

I’d settle for not giving up 3.5 years early.

Jim Treacher on June 5, 2009 at 11:15 PM

It’s not news… it’s advertising.

I learned that when I was five.

Of course… I had a damn good teacher.

I think that the one silver lining in having Obama serve two terms will be watching the media discredit itself for twice as long.

I interpreted this to mean that AP is extremely pessimistic rather than making a flippant remark.

chris999 on June 5, 2009 at 11:27 PM

Here’s a flip flop I hate.

“We’re going to need to sacrifice. We can’t set our thermostats at 72 degrees and drive our SUVs and use up 25% of the energy of the world even though we’re 5% of the world’s population.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to take $24,000 more of your money so I can fly to New York and go on a date.”

Daggett on June 5, 2009 at 11:30 PM

Sorry, I think it was actually $240,000.

It does work. But the fact that they’re using it shows that their deeds are evil, and they KNOW it. Nobody who’s doing the right thing, and good for the country needs to play the Saul Alinksy games on the public in order to “get away with it.”

Daggett on June 5, 2009 at 11:35 PM

If The Precedent’s flip-flops (i.e. lies) are for the public good, then his borderline retardation must be as beneficial as the industrial revolution and his treason as helpful an advance as the invention of the wheel.

We’re all set.

It feels almost like we are living through a novel or the history of the German descent into fascism. I’m not saying Obama is going to murder Jews. So far he is only on the far liberal side of rational thought and politics–it doesn’t have to end horribly.

But what I am saying clearly and unashamedly is that Obama has that same kind of power that Hitler had over people’s minds.

It is beyond rational thought that these are educated, freethinking, wealthy, people and they are behaving like the Germans did with Hitler.

If you ever wondered how the Germans could do what they did, well here is how.

If Obama wanted to he could do anything and they would back him. Anything at all.

Ssshhhh everyone. Calm yourself. When the enemy is making fools of themselves LET THEM. When they dig furiously to get out of that hole; lend a shovel. When they are on fire suggest more gasoline. What ever you do don’t clue them in. A clueless enemy is a beautiful thing.

And do make sure you attend a tea party whenever and wherever they are held.

Credibility won’t be an issue in 2016.
*flash to future newscast commentary from the UK*

Dateline London, June 6th, 2017
The Americas war has been raging for nearly 3 years now. What liberals remain are retreating and scurrying into whatever holes they can find while they watch the intertwined race war play itself out. The UN has been no help, suffering from a complete lack of credibility and having to rely on communist countries for the lions share of their operating costs, leaving it a hollow shell of a useless organization.

At least countries that had tried to invade the US (Mexico first, then the combined forces of Cuba and Venezuela) during the beginning of the Americas war were repelled. More accurately, they were steamrolled by fierce citizen fighters and overwhelmed by angry mobs. The partial remains of the foreign fighters still dangle from the lamp posts in every major southern US city after nearly two and a half years.

When the death toll in the USA reached around 175 million, enough liberals have been publicly executed that any liberal caught loudly deny being a socialist liberal and join the anti liberal crusade out of sheer fear, then march with the goon squad lemming racist brigades as they root out the last of the minorities to stack on the pyres.

We in the UK saw what Obama was even if we were too afraid to say so, but why didn’t the Americans see it? The republican party strove to veer to the left, leaving conservatives to be the only ones to take up arms when Obama declared the constitution invalid, nationalizing all industries, and revoking all rights previously guaranteed to the American citizen under the constitution.

Will America survive? It’s this reporters opinion that yes indeed it will, but only if the genocide currently turning American soil damp and red comes to an end soon, and the last of the treasonous marxist fascist left wing party members are rendered inert by the ongoing public executions.

In other news, the nuclear exchange between Iran, Syria, Pakistan, India, and Israel has left oil reserves at an all time low, as well as leaving the collapsed Russian-Chinese compact to defend the regions from North Korean aggression….
