U.S. News: “Obama’s flip-flops for the public good”

Via Ace, who sees this for the naked ex ante rationalization of tax hikes that it is. The worse the coverage gets, the more I think that the one silver lining in having Obama serve two terms will be watching the media discredit itself for twice as long. Even lefty magazines now admit openly how deeply in the tank the press is for its hero. What will it be like in 2016? What credibility will be left?

Overall, however, Obama has been praised for his flexibility, not condemned for his flip-flops. One reason, pollsters say, is that he seems such a contrast to the still-unpopular Bush, who was the opposite–stubborn and set in his ways. “When presented with a tough problem where a change of course was called for, Bush just dug in. He felt that it was weakness to change his mind,” says a senior Democratic strategist. He cites Bush’s positions to limit stem cell research, oppose legislation expanding healthcare for children, enact partial privatization of Social Security, and pursue the Iraq war. In contrast, he says, “Obama is willing to change course if he feels it’s needed. The American people will still support him if he is not seen as doing it for political reasons.”…

In the end, Americans will understand and accept a president who changes course, as long as he does it for the public good or to acknowledge new realities, not for crass partisan reasons or to curry favor with particular interest groups. But there is hell to pay if a president breaks a fundamental promise and can’t justify it. Perhaps the best example is George H. W. Bush, who violated his “read my lips–no new taxes” pledge from the 1988 campaign. Partly as a result, Bush lost his re-election bid in 1992.

I.e. lying to get elected = “pragmatism.” Incidentally, is promising not to raise taxes on people who make less than $250,000 a year “a fundamental promise”? I’ve got a crazy hunch we’re going to find out it’s not, just like we’ll find out that inexplicably changing one’s position on whether soldiers in Iraq have died in vain is due to something other than “political reasons.” Seriously, not that I’m not any paragon of integrity, but I’m willing at least to defend even people who have smeared my business on national television when I think they’re right. Neither Michelle nor Ed nor I have held back from knocking the GOP when warranted either (as a cursory glance at the comments to many posts will prove), even though it’s against our political interest to do so. How can it be that big media is even more slanted than we are when we’re an overtly partisan right-wing site? How low can they go?

Actually, this low. Click the image to watch.

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisperd in the sounds of silence….

If Barack Obama came out on a stage naked, wearing a bag over his head and speaking in pig latin..these morons would immediately do the same. They have lost all sense of self, they are like cultists.

I wonder what Bush’s numbers would have been if he got anywhere near this kind of a break from the media?

I bet if Obama had been president during Katrina and things had gone exactly the same they would have been telling us all what a bang up job the administration was doing.

Terrye on June 6, 2009 at 7:13 AM

They don’t have any credibility now. What difference will the year 2016 make?

Dr Evil on June 6, 2009 at 7:22 AM

the more I think that the one silver lining in having Obama serve two terms will be watching the media discredit itself for twice as long.

Do you know what trumps “Cult Of Personality” People not working and having any money especially after record spending by this Government. Unemployment at 9.4 come 2010 and 2012 Obama better be able to have shown some job growth and not just for the ditch digging crowd. White Males are at 9.6 if they are unemployed for any length of time how are they going to vote? And they will have plenty of time on their hands to vote since they won’t be working will they tell their wives I don’t know something like this ” You want me to get a job” you better vote for Obama’s opposition” I can see whole families voting the same way just from kitchen table concerns. So Jobs and not the kind Joe Biden is talking about Temp Jobs and then what? Well paying full time employment. What happens when we hit 10% unemployment double digits. People start turning off things like cable so no more cable news and their internet access…it’s not a necessity. So how does the Liberal Biased Propaganda Machines, manage to brainwash the masses then?

Dr Evil on June 6, 2009 at 7:30 AM

People start turning off things like cable so no more cable news

Now, that’s a “silver lining” I can appreciate!

oldleprechaun on June 6, 2009 at 7:36 AM

Well at least they are starting to admit that they think he is a god. It’s the only truthful thing they have said in years.

During the debates I kept saying that BO could have just stood there stuffing live kittens into a blender and still would have won the debate. He is a living god and is being worshipped by more and more people every day. The really interesting part is that more and more people feel they can now admit that they think he is a god. We are witness to the founding of a new world wide religion. Isn’t it wonderful?

jmarcure on June 6, 2009 at 7:50 AM

They don’t have any credibility now. What difference will the year 2016 make?

Dr Evil on June 6, 2009 at 7:22 AM

It won’t but the more interesting thing is the 2016. I’m hearing more and more 2016 rather then 2012 which people were so optimistic about just a month ago. I think two things are happening here. More and more people are getting sucked into the BO cult and more and more people are releasing that BO and his cult may be unstoppable.

All the more reason for Barry to ram the Fairness Doctrine through ASAP. Imagine how he’d feel about millions of people home during the middle of the day with nothing to do, exposed to the subversive messages coming from Rush and Hannity and Boortz and….Nip it! Nip it in the bud!!

Lurking Vet on June 6, 2009 at 7:58 AM

Rats! That should be realizing not releasing.

jmarcure on June 6, 2009 at 7:59 AM

He’s NOT my God!

My God created and sustains the Universe. My God created and sustains me! My God died for my sins and rose from the dead. My God loves me and gives me new life through faith in Him! His name is Jesus Christ!

When Barack Obama can do any one of these…I too shall believe…

sabbott on June 6, 2009 at 8:11 AM

It will catch up to them. By this time next year, the tone of this administration and the tone of the country will be quite different. We will see proof of that when he starts to campaign in 2011 or so. Smoke and mirrors will not work a second time around.

sherry on June 5, 2009 at 9:02 PM

I agree. The media can spin all it wants (”Obama’s like a god!” “Michelle is like a supermodel!”), but the majority of the public will know by this time next year who is to blame for the still-miserable state of our economy. The besotted media works overtime to make excuses for Obama, but his disapproval ratings are already on the rise, and as unemployment continues to worsen and prices/taxes continue to go higher, that trend will accelerate. The 2012 election will be a Carter/Reagan-type blow-out, regardless of who the Republican candidate is.

Not me. It will just prove that he is the AC. What god would waste time living a mortal life just to dominate humans?

jmarcure on June 6, 2009 at 8:39 AM

Brinwashing in its last stages. Joseph Goebells has won.

volsense on June 6, 2009 at 8:52 AM

I’d subscribed to US News for years. I cancelled my subscribtion with the latest “Obama is GOD” issue. But what really ticked me off was the line in there that there was a “zillion” (yes, the word actually used in a “news” magazine) reasons for Sarah Palin to fail.

Any good, balanced news magazines out there?

Is promising “tax refunds to 95% of Americans” (when only 60% actually pay taxes) a ‘fundamental promise’? If so, where the hell is my tax refund already?

alwyr on June 6, 2009 at 9:02 AM

I don’t know who this guy talks to when he prays at night, but for me – my G-d isn’t even remotely named ‘Obama.’

redfoxbluestate on June 6, 2009 at 9:08 AM

“Reagan was all about America!” Obama is ‘we are above that now.’ “Obama is standing above the country, above the world, he’s sort of God.”

……how and the hell do you respond to that?

My references to The New Messiah as the Anti-christ used to be a snarky throw-away line. Now, I’m not so sure. (Is that the faint shadow of a 666 on his forehead?)

obladioblada on June 6, 2009 at 9:15 AM

Now we know why and how it is that Newsweek sucks sooo bad! Newsweek is sorta like The Devil.

Griz on June 6, 2009 at 9:17 AM

there has been an abundance of material for the republicans to go after on this pig, and all i see and hear is silence. silence and crickets. it’s pretty sad and pathetic.

Ghoul aid on June 5, 2009 at 9:32 PM

Oh, it’s happening. Unfortunately for America, the media do not report on the very pointed criticisms from Republican congresscritters. What should be the lede in news is either buried at the end or not reported at all.

onlineanalyst on June 6, 2009 at 9:23 AM

Evan Thomas, the grandson of noted communist Norman Thomas. Why anyone takes the moronic fulminations of this pseudo-intellectual clown seriously is beyond me.

He, Newsweek and the rest of the state-run media can all go to the infernal reaches.

Why not just change the name of the rag to “Obamaweek”?

drjohn on June 6, 2009 at 9:45 AM

Just what we always needed “Daddy Obama. It’s all for your own good and it hurts me more than it hurts you.”

Obama is not the anti-Christ. It cannot be that obvious to so many to be true.

volsense on June 6, 2009 at 9:28 AM

It’s only obvious to the unbelievers. The AC doesn’t need to hide and can be blatantly obvious to its followers because they will believe it can do no wrong because it is their god. As time goes on more and more people fall under its influence and it becomes greater and more powerful. Even many of the unbelievers will start to doubt their resistance to it. Again I say if BO isn’t the AC then he is doing one heck of an impression so far. A complete unknown with little history as walked in and easily became the most powerful man on earth by doing and saying nothing. He speaks shallow and empty words and people swoon over the depth of his being. To be so revered when having done so little and with so little known is frankly unbelievable.

Dr Evil on June 6, 2009 at 7:30 AM

The unemployment numbers calculated now do not include those that aren’t looking for work now…they gave up, and the ones that don’t intend or want to even try.

During Bush’s tenure these people were included in the numbers, now they aren’t. If you put those people in as well the unemployment number is over 15%….actually I think it’s 16.9% according to Rush, not positive

Spiritk9 on June 6, 2009 at 10:23 AM

volsense on June 6, 2009 at 9:28 AM

Ah well, you’re probably right. It just takes a lot longer to call him the “third rate poser who combines all of the worst traits of Huey Long, Richard Daley, Neville Chamberlain and Hugo Chavez but can read a good speech” ;)

obladioblada on June 6, 2009 at 10:27 AM

Ummm yeah! That is ALL his presidency has been about. Politically garnering more control, power, and votes for the next time. Why people can’t see thru that thin veneer is beyond me.

Did anyone watch Obamas D Day Speech? He paused after every sentence or 2, as if awaiting his rousing applause. He once again, turned it to him, and about him, and for him. A lil clue for you, Barack. It’s not ALL about YOU!!!

capejasmine on June 6, 2009 at 10:37 AM

I used to think that the msm was only propping up O and was behind him because they were libs, but this is over the top even for them. Actually admitting they think he is god. Wouldn’t want to be in their shoes when the real one, GOD, who is slow to anger, decides to point his finger their way.

That’s the $1.56 EXTRA you get everyday you work 8 hours!

Or

The $7.80 EXTRA you get every week you work 40 hours!

Please note:
If you work less or more than 40 hours a week this may negatively affect your $1.56 per day.

Ah, the power of a positive press. Never doubt the effectiveness of advertising.
BTW, I thought the anti-Christ was supposed to survive a normally fatal head wound. Not that I’m looking forward to such a thing, but wouldn’t that be some serious evidence to bolster the Obama is AC theory?
