Tom Brokaw to Obama: What can Israel learn from Buchenwald about its treatment of Palestinians?

posted at 2:45 pm on June 5, 2009 by Allahpundit

I thought, or rather hoped, that Powerline was kidding. Nope. You’ll find the exchange here, around 4:05. (Obama thankfully rejects the analogy.) For added disgust, note that this interview was conducted in Dresden, ground zero of the neo-Nazi revisionist movement to draw moral equivalence between Nazi atrocities and Allied bombings of German cities. You’ll fit right in at MSNBC, Tom.

I’ve reached my saturation point with videos of The One so I’m skipping the clip of him at Buchenwald. You’ll be glad to know that he vowed to resist the spread of evil in our time, which will make for a grimly ironic flashback soundbite the day Iran announces they’ve got the bomb. Instead, here’s three minutes of reflection from a guy who really has confronted evil, literally and recently. His oratory is the flip side of Obama’s, short on style and very, very long on substance. Tremendously moving. Don’t miss it.

Under the protection of the American gov’t, anti-Israel/anti-Semitism sentiment has been contained. Now, the first American president since Israel’s founding has lifted the veil with his own anti-Israel Pro-Arab/Muslim/Palestinian slant. Watch out Israel, watch out world Jews. You are in for a bumpy ride. As for TOTUS, he, too, may find the waters a bit choppy in the years to come. http://www.thecjpoliticalreport.com/barack_backlash.html

INC on June 5, 2009 at 3:14 PM

No. But every time, and I do mean every time, his name is mentioned, this quote should be cited. Tom Browkaw, who asked the president, “What can the Israelis learn from your visit to Buchenwald?”, is one of the icons of liberal journalism. Let us all see what it is they idolize.

The statement by Brokaw,is a slap to the face and
an insult to Israel and the Jewish people!

How in gawds name can any human being connect to how
the Jewish people in World War Two,that were herded in
cattle cars, and were shipped to one of the death camps,
be anywhere, shape or form to the plight,or the way the Palestians are treated!

For the love of gawd, the situation that the Palestians
find themselves in is not the result of Jewish treatment!

I am sooooooooooooooooooo sick and tired of Liberals con
necting Israel as Nazi’s towards Gaza, and the Lefty loons
thinking Gaza as a huge Concentration camp!

With idiot media types like Tom Brokaw, who needs enemy’s!

And besides Tom ought to know better,he wrote a book, the
Greatest Generation!

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well speaking as a ‘Depression Baby”– I can say I’m no more or less conservative than I was 50+ years ago. About the same would be my assessment. Lot of folks my age were influenced by their parents who thought the sun rose and set on FDR. This same generation was very pro-union in a time when unions had a role in the culture they no longer hold. Many, if not most, still subscribe to these points of view. Also, many people in my generation simply do not follow the details and nuances of today’s political scene. They do, and will always, subscribe to what they see as the Democratic Party’s being for the little guy, the everyday folk. This is no longer true, but many do not notice or take the time to re-evaluate.

I think the Israelis have learned from Buchenwald to never, ever do something like that to another human being.

So that’s why they actually over-compensate and try to be as humane as possible to the Palestinians – who absolutely do not deserve that humane treatment, but get it anyway.

I hope that answered your unbelievably and mind-blowingly repugnant question.

“Why are many old folks liberals?”

They think of J F Kennedy. Kennedy was a liberal. Anti abortion, conservative on taxes. Actually he is more conservative than most conservatives I know.

seven on June 5, 2009 at 3:16 PM

You beat me to it. A large number of Baby Boomers were raised on the Kennedy Myth and have spent their lives vainly searching for the Next JFK to inspire and lead them. They were young teens when JFK was killed and it had a huge impact on them. Those who protested the Vietnam war and dodged the draft tend to still be liberals today as well, and even though the war was started by JFK and turned into a quagmire by LBJ, they somehow blame Nixon and the Republicans for it.

My parents are conservatives who hated the Kennedys and LBJ. So all of us baby-boom kids are too. My husband grew up in Massachusetts and his whole family are Kennedy-worshippers to this day.

Nationalizing Israel

Obama dictates Israel policy on settlements.

Since the US has been providing billions to Israel every year, Obama thinks he can dictate to them like he can to GM and Chrysler and AIG and CitiGroup etc.

Pretty soon he will be demanding Israel change its CEO.

Israel better watch out.

stillaneocon on June 5, 2009 at 3:27 PM

WTF? How can you even draw a comparison? Is Israel rounding up Palis and putting them in camps and starving them? Killing them in ovens? Performing medical experiments on them?

Palistinians are in camps of their own making. Their ill treatment is at the hands of their own leaders. They keep doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results. They are all insane. As is Tom Brokaw! SHeesh! Idiot!

What I learned through bitter experience. Very few people like Jews. Very few people would stick up for Jews if they were run out of business, lied about, thrown in gas chambers and ovens. If we do not fight for ourselves, no one else will. That’s what I learned.

All of my family are libs. Some are just run-of-the mill dems, others are active politically in support of far left stuff. Every single one voted for Obama. They all see themselves as harmless, nice, kind, fair people who wouldn’t hurt a fly, and would love to break into a round of Kumbaya with Fidel Castro if they could.

I haven’t spoken to or seen a single one of them since the day before election day, except for an occasional awkward conversation with my mother, who lives 3500 miles away. I hold them personally responsible for whatever Obama does. They don’t think they have anything to do with what he does and shouldn’t be held responsible for anything. Their vote for this obscenity was crossing a line for me. I tried to warn them of what he would do, how he would abandon Israel, nationalize health care, raise taxes, reward his homies, take revenge on those not of his race, institute expensive environmental rules, reduce energy production, etc. etc. but nothing I said mattered. Blood is supposed to be thicker than water, but freedom and my wife and kids’ futures comes before my allegiance to my extended family. But I think you probably understand that since that’s what military families decide all the time when they send love ones into harms way. People I don’t know fight and die for my freedom. My lib. family can take a hike.

You speak a lot of truth there. This is the country where following the rules is not only expected, but violators are indeed punished.
I recall stories of “jay-walkers” being treated as major law-breakers.
I’m not insinuating they are all Nazis either, because they are certainly not. An orderly society that prides itself on orderliness has a tendency to take that pride too far. Inject some major hate into that (which is a fairly common human failing) and it is not too hard to create a Nazi.
What the Jews learned at Buchenwald and the other camps is what we should all have learned and NEVER EVER forget – Never again!
Then we have folks like Obama and Brokaw who have already forgotten.

I watched Elie Wiesel speak this morning. Every word, came from his heart. The look of Obama was disgusting. Nose up in the air, looking down on this man, as if he were a piece of scum. That’s just my opinion, but Obama was definitely not looking on this man, with compassion.

Then knowing, Obama lied about his talking to his great uncle, about being part of the liberation. The Great Uncle was part of the liberation, but never spoke about it, to Obama. So Obama changed his version, and said his grandfather told him about it.

According to a report, this Great Uncle said his sister, and brother inlaw (Obamas Grand Parents) were comfortable with telling half truths, lies, and embellishing stories, or outright, making it up. So we see where Obama, and his mother get it from, and it doesn’t remain in families, as we see Tom Brokaw today. Evidence, is a grand thing.

The MSNBC video interview shows Obama immediately says “BUT” and says their experiences should inform their “EMPATHY” and Israel should therefore get the strength to seek an everlasting peace.

It is infuriating to see him being given credit for rejecting something he merely gave lip-service to before plowing ahead and making an equivalence (as he did yesterday in Cairo).

I don’t know, but I do know (or at least recall) that the Nazis were pretty gung-ho about progress too. I honestly don’t think Buchenwald was the best venue to talk about humanity’s progress.
Actually though, for me, places like Buchenwald are the major reason why (even at 12) I figured out that secular humanism was frighteningly retarded at best or downright diabolic at worst.
I’m not the brightest person I know, but I did get the idea that actual evil exists. Progress is not going to get rid of it.

I have boycotted all NBC News programming for years (and make sure that I frequently remind them of that fact)but there should be a national boycott of all NBC News/Today advertisers. NBC knows that their remaining audience is only liberals and idiots so their ratings won’t be affected by the disgusting question from Brokaw but no conservative should purchase a single product from any company that advertises on NBC news(and MSNBC).

Money is all that matters (until Obama bails them out too).

I almost shared my own mom story, but deleted it. Suffice it to say, no one lasts forever. And you miss what was good, even if it seemed like a constant conflict to find something good.

Does anyone know what it means when the President, giving a speech at Buchenwald, says, “…history is unknowable [but] it arches toward progress…”? Did he mean to say the future is unknowable? I hope so. We certainly know the history that happened there.

dtestard on June 5, 2009 at 3:51 PM

I’m glad you asked. I majored in “Moron Communication Science”, with a minor Obamaphilia (boy, did that gamble pay off, eh?).

The quote you ask about, translated into the “most likely” english phrase, literally means “ice cream has no bones”.

In other words, this is empirical evidence that Obama is either a complete, clincal moron, or the AI heuristics of the teleprompter hasn’t finished “learning” the language of politicians yet.

Bottom line: It’s complete gibberish.

BobMbx on June 5, 2009 at 4:11 PM

The story is touching but he was dellusional when he said,”every war is meaningless”. We must do all we can do to hold the peace. But peace often comes with a price. That price involves legislative fairness and an enforcement of the law. It also involves using brute and often deadly force. If the Allied powers simply tried talking our way out of our differences with Nazi Germany, the Jews would have been slaughtered on a global scale.

FACT: The Israelis treat the Palestinians like kings compared to the Arab/Muslim world.

Tom Brokaw – you stink.

J.J. Sefton on June 5, 2009 at 4:20 PM

What Israel can learn from Buchenwald?

That Jews need and will now always have their own nuclear weapons, guns, tanks, bombs, army, secret service and ammo-no thanks to idiots like President Obama, the mainstream media and any other anti-Jew, anti-Israel forces and garden variety antisemites.

What Israel can learn about Buchenwald vis a vis the Palestinians: the reincarnation of your Nazi foes lives right in your borders and all around you and the whole world pays them jizyah and ignores them murdering you over an over.

maverick muse, upinak, JiangxiDad,
It’s not just effecting the old. There are a few yound and middle aged that are seeing the errors of Obama’s ways but most are in denial. They will likely stay that way like the elderly libs. They sincerely want hope and change.
Think about it. Bush wasn’t a bad guy. He wasn’t the best but if you show a liberal Bush’s actions you have a firm case that he was a moderate. But they didn’t want to see it. Things were bad in the world and it was easier to find a scapegoat. Bush was that scapegoat. Now they want a scapegoat and a messiah. (Historically these two words are related, but nevermind). Obama is the problem solver no matter what.

These people do not want to come out of their self delusion.

shick on June 5, 2009 at 4:23 PM

Tom Brokaw to Obama: What can Israel learn from Buchenwald about its treatment of Palestinians?

“Uh….Look, ummm….maybe they shouldn’t kill more than you can burn in one day? Those photos from the death camps…um…ya know, the piles of bodies….wow. The process was clearly inefficient with severe bottlnecks. Oh, they could appoint a Czar, maybe?”

I believe the correct phrase is Jews= Hitler.

I think Bush got demoted.

Have we ever heard anything like this from the likes of Brokaw before? Or is he simply pandering to the Muslims, or new Overlords?

But it helps.

There’s a contest going on in the Press Corps. They’re all competing for the “historical” event of First Presidential blowjob on live TV.

Olby is, without a doubt, two laps ahead of the pack.

BobMbx on June 5, 2009 at 4:30 PM

The holocaust for me is an example of what one man can do to another when he has absoulte power over you and even worse what a governement can do to man when they have absoulte power over you.
The reality is the Germans are not any more or less hateful than any other human is capable of being.
This is what has always attracted me to the conservative movement, the princple that anything created by man will be flawed because man is flawed(even includes great men) and the acceptance of it by the followers.
The lesson should be the absolute folly of pacifism and appeasement and of expecting mans better angels to always rise up and save the day.
Hope for the best but expect the worse

kangjie on June 5, 2009 at 4:32 PM

It’s amazing how someone as old as Brokaw has no clue of what happened to the Jews during the last century in Europe. There is also no excuse for trying to draw a parallel with Israel turning over land to Palestinians, only to be used as a base of operations to kill Israelis.

Israel supplies medicine and treatment to Palestinians, while their Muslim brothers supply them and their children with ammunition, and uses their ambulances to transport weapons instead of wounded civilians.

If you want a parallel, try the SS and Islam.

Can I ask a question, without being slammed by our older conservative folk?

Why is it… when people get older… they go down the liberal road more so then ever?

I noticed my Mom doing this, whom is a flaming liberal but won’t argue with me because she knows I am right and can prove it. She is also of the “Baby Boom” Generation.

**awaits the hate**

upinak on June 5, 2009 at 3:00 PM

It’s because most people don’t get on the public dole until they retire, and then they become as greedy about their monthly checks as everyone else on the public dole is — so they begin to support the guy offering the most “free stuff.” Over and over I’ve seen people who were die-hard small government, free market types go completely nutty over the “sacrosanct” nature of their Social Security checks. One need only look at the state of our country today to see how fast and easy people will become wards of the state if given half a chance. Once you’re gettin’ that government check, you tend to vote for the guy who promises to continue sending the check, no matter how badly it screws future generations.

National health care will be no different, by the way. Some people will get really terrific services, and we’ll all be lulled into complacency. Then, a generation or two down the road, we’ll be killin’ old people in their beds and tossin’ sick babies on the trash heap.

I’ll tell you why. Because as you get older, you become more who you really are. That’s why. You don’t become “more liberal” or “more conservative”–you just become more yourself. You’ll find out.
