With unemployment hitting its highest rate in more than a generation and the Obama administration’s predictions falling flat, watching the media reaction today should be rather … interesting. In a Republican administration, the least little hiccup in unemployment would generate scads of human-interest stories about hardships, families on the brink, and so on. Dean Baker at Counterpunch scornfully notes that the national media has rushed to put the most positive spin possible on grim economic news during the Obama Era — and even some impossible spin as well:
Last week we got a whole series of bad reports on the state of the economy. New and existing home sales both remain near their lowest level for the downturn, as house prices continue to drop at the rate of 2.0 percent a month. New orders for capital goods, a key measure of investment demand, fell by 2.0 percent in April. Excluding the volatile transportation sector, new orders were still down by 1.5 percent.
On Friday, the Chicago Purchasing Managers Index fell by more than 5 percentage points from its April level, approaching its low for the downturn. The employment component of the index did hit a new low.
These reports might have led to gloomy news stories, but not in the U.S. media. The folks who could not see an $8 trillion housing bubble are still determined to find the silver lining in even the worst economic news.
For example, National Public Radio told listeners that the new home sales figure reported for April was up from the March level . While this was true, the April figure was only 1,000 higher than a March level that had just been revised down by 5,000. April new home sales were 4,000 below the sales level that had originally been reported for March. USA Today touted a “surge” in durable goods orders, which was also based on a sharp downward revision to the prior month’s data.
The media have obviously abandoned economic reporting and instead have adopted the role of cheerleader, touting whatever good news it can find and inventing good news when none can be found. This leaves the responsibility of reporting on the economy to others.
In fact, Baker reports, there are no significant signs of recovery yet in the economy. The media wants to spin any signs of life as proof that the administration’s economic policies have begun to succeed, but at the moment it’s still vaporware. Not only are people losing their jobs, the ones who still have them have lowered wages and declining buying power. The most significant asset for most Americans — their homes — has lost a great deal of its value. Baker says these two points have combined to cripple consumer confidence and consumption, a rational and completely understandable reaction, and not just an attitude problem as most of the major media has painted it thus far.
Steve Perry at MinnPost, not exactly a conservative bastion, agrees:
My question is, who thought it could be otherwise? Frankly I’m surprised that the mainstream coverage of the economy has been as strong at times as it has. The press’s troubles in reporting on the economy are just a specialized variant of the press’s troubles in reporting on politics and business. They rely entirely too much on top-down institutional sources, and wind up carrying their water. Nothing exactly revelatory about that.
What’s worn on me since the bear market rally and the green shoots blather is the short shrift given to the street-level impact of the lousy economy and the even worse employment picture. Now that the whiff of recovery is in the air, illusory as it may be, that coverage seems to have fallen off dramatically.
I’d buy that explanation if George W Bush had gotten a free ride on unemployment. Does anyone else remember the media’s incessant harping on the “jobless recovery” in 2003, just before the economic expansion hit? Care to recall what the unemployment figures were in 2002-3 that prompted all of those critics? It peaked at 6.3% in June 2003. All during the resultant expansion, while unemployment dropped to less than half of what we have now, the media focuses on “inequalities” of the economy and pay disparity between workers and CEOs. If they gave Bush any grudging credit at all for keeping unemployment low, we heard nothing but tripe about “McJobs”.
Baker has it right; the media is in the tank for Obama, probably more so on the economy than anywhere else, as they know that will be his key vulnerability. Some of it comes as sunny optimism, and some — like the NPR example, amounts to government-funded propaganda, as Baker demonstrates. That does leave the reporting of the economy to others, and expect the market reaction to produce far more credible voices in the alternative media.

I argued with my husband about this yesterday. Just compare these first few months with the first months of the Reagan Administration. There was wall-to-wall coverage of the rising unemployment rates, foreclosures, homeless people everywhere, the “ketchup as a vegetable” made-up controversy, plant closings, Japan buying up New York real estate, etc. etc.
And Ronald Reagan actually acted like there was an economic crisis. His first trip abroad was in June. Despite hollering from the press, he ignored the Soviets and most other foreign issues to concentrate on the economy.
It’s just unbelievable to me how big a pass this Administration is getting on the economy. Who the F cares about making nice to the Muslims and trying to solve a 60-year-old Israel problem when there are 17 million Americans without full time jobs???

Here were two of the headlines on Yahoo this morning:
Jobless rate hits 9.4 percent in May; layoffs slow
and
Stocks waver after better-than-expected jobs data
If Bush (or McCain) were president right now, it would say:
Jobless rate hits 9.4 percent; highest unemployment in 25 years
and
Market dives after gloomy jobs data released

While a bit off topic stick with me – this reminds me of the useless adage found in the business world: “Relationships are everything!!!”
Bullsh&*. Cozy relationships between 2 entities should be trumped by “results”. Results are a metric that can be agreed upon, measured and quantified as to the “health” of that relationship, not the other way around.
The media is not only in the bag for Bambi – but they want a deep , personal relationship to mask the failures of both Bambi and the media’s responsibility and results. As viewers flee the MSM – both print, online and on TV – they are deciding to not only leverage their left leaning bias – but worse – in the process want to be the “best friend” of Bambi – the oppostie of the “4th column” and of course – the opposite of their business results – as I mentioned above.
That provides cover to Bambi’s results – in so much – the economy is horrid, foreign relations are strained (though we always get the same bs carp about “We love Obamab – but not his words and programs” – relationship over results) N Korea, Iran, Russia promising to ramp up military might, no clear roadmap of success; yet the waste 2 days running around the WH like a tween getting a day with the Jonas brothers.
When the chit hits the fan in a business relationship – relationships that dont produce results should be ended (some good companies do, some don’t), whereas result oriented relationships should win the prize.
I am not some hardass mean guy – but the greatest compliment I ever got was with a company I consulted for and did some great work. The SVP said to me “you know, I have to honest – I really dont like you personally – but you have delivered far past our expectations and I would be a fool to end our relationship”. When I tell people that story – they look at me as if I am crazy – but I will take anotehr 12 month retainer and commissions, over an Xmas card and invite to play golf any day of the week.
I am sure many people have been fired, let go or forced to quit, regardless of results because they “didn’t fit in, or weren’t popular”. And I am positive many people are kept on a job, with dismal results, because they are “liked”
When the media starts opining and doing theiur jobs based on results – I guarantee their viewership, revenue and distribution will go upo.
Perfect example: The 2 most hated men on the right in America – O’Reilly and Limbaugh – dominate their industry with hard results…

This is actually one of the only things I was looking forward to about an Obama presidency. As annoying as it is, I think the media’s cheerleading about the economy is keeping it from getting even worse in the short term. Consumer confidence — pure psychological reaction to what people *think* is going on in the economy — is higher than it ought to be because of rosy coverage. If people were reacting to REAL economic conditions, I think they’d stop spending even as much as they are now and commence the freaking out in earnest. Consequently, the economy would worsen even more rapidly. It would hurt Obama, but it would hurt us more.

American Journalism has prostituted it’s professional ethics and become a propaganda arm of the Democratic Socialist Party. Any assertion otherwise is laughable on it’s face.
It’s time to take these bastards on – AS THE ESTABLISHMENT. Obama is falling – he’s running out of gas. The hardest items on his “to do” list are coming up and he has to also pass massive tax increases and start taxing things we’ve never taxed before in order to maintain any semblence of credibility. But, in doing so – he’s going to anger Americans – who are already abandoning him.
And the media will attempt to bail on him to – dishonorable whores that they are. We should not let them. When we retake this country (and it looks like it will be sooner than later in spite of impotent GOP leadership) – when we retake this country – we need to attack not only the Democratic Socialists – but also their willing propagandists in the media. THEY ARE PART OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT OF WOE.
They should not be left intact.

Take a little Sunday spin, go to watch the Dodgers win. Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin. Hair was short and skirts were long. Kate Smith really sold a song. TheBigOldDog on June 5, 2009 at 12:04 PM
Hmm – thats a tough one – considering the inverse reaction. When the economy was doing wonderfully – the media used propaganda to convince people it was “horrible”.
Someone (looking for it now) did a chart with GDP vs CCI. Guess what – there was an inverse relationship between the 2 – highlighted in 2005 – when the economy was kicking ass – yet CCI was very low.
See my ramble above – the media needs to be honest and forgo the cozy feel good bs. The problem isnt with the “media” – but the political hackery make up of said media – left and in the bag for liberals and Dems.

I was driving through Mississippi last week and happened to see one of Obama’s touted “shovel ready” projects “in progress” — in quotes because I use both terms extremely loosely. Anyone who is familiar with Mississippi highways in the last 15 years or so, at least in the western part of the state, will vouch for how nice they are. I’m not talking about freeways or the little two-lane country roads, but the middling state highways. Four lanes, wide shoulders, adequate traffic lights and traffic light warnings. It’s a smooth ride, with virtually no potholes or other road damage. This is because the roads are still pretty new, built by the state with casino money.
As I was traveling on one of these roads (Highway 49, north of Jackson), I noticed a sign had been erected along the side of the road declaring that this stretch of road was proudly being refurbished with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. I don’t live in MS, but I do live in AR where the roads are horrendous. Believe me when I tell you this highway is NOT in need of any major repairs. So essentially what is happening is that a perfectly adequate road is being torn up and repaved, all in the interest of “stimulating” the economy.
Didn’t they try this approach in Japan for ten years only to dig themselves further into a hole?
I don’t care who it is in 2012, but we need to elect SOMEONE who will get in there and roll back this waste.
NoLeftTurn on June 5, 2009 at 12:10 PM
We are living the full-blown Orwellian nightmare at this point, and the SRM (State-run Media) has become an enemy of the people, gleefully destroying the lives, reputations, and careers of all opposition voices. As Rush pointed out, now that the Obama Thugocracy owns the banks, while the large media corporations who own the radio stations and newspapers are careening towards bankruptcy and subsequent nationalization, it will soon be a simple matter to silence all opposition.
With Obama’s aggressive nationalization of all of life’s necessities – banking, transportation, health care, education, energy, housing, and soon communications, a frightening dark age is descending upon us.
2010 mid-terms may be our final LEGAL opportunity to stop the fascist, totalitarian juggernaut that’s steamrolling our once-free society. Failing this, our final opportunity, which is probably inevitable given the SRM’s throat-lock on public information and a systematically dumbed-down MTV generation voting public, then what?

I think this will end up being better for us in the end. The media spinning the economy as recovering and turning upward means they’re going to have a harder time returning to “Boooooooosh did it!” come 2010/2012. If we’re recovering now and the economy is still in the crapper come election time they won’t be able to shield Obama from it. And spin as they may they won’t be able to convince enough voters that the economy isn’t really that bad when they can look around their neighborhoods and cities and families and know that’s not true.

*Especially* us Californians.
Obama’s $400 tax break has been absorbed by a tripled car tax and a 9.75% sales tax here in Los Angeles….not to mention all the other ad-ons.
Little by little, they just keep chipping away at our paychecks.

The media ignore that one of the reason housing sales rose in April might have to do with the spike in foreclosures from the moratorium coming off . . . How many of those increase sales came from people snapping up foreclosed homes at a percentage of market value?
But they neither have the brains nor the desire to make the linkage between the spike in foreclosures and the spike in purchase contracts, because that would dimish how this is an accomplishment for Obamessiah.
