Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on June 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama’s speech in Cairo yesterday, whatever else one thinks of it, did produce something in abundance: Obamateurisms.  We’ll start with one noticed by Barcepundit, and fittingly so, because it relates to Spain, Barcepundit’s country.  In praising the history of Islamic tolerance, Obama told his audience that Islam even showed its tolerance … during the Inquisition?

The fifth issue that we must address together is religious freedom.

Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance. We see it in the history of Andalusia and Cordoba during the Inquisition.

Barcepundit couldn’t believe his ears:

[B]y the time the Spanish Inquisition was created in 1478, Cordoba has been reconquered from Islamic hands almost 150 years earlier, in 1236.

Andalusia didn’t last long in the Inquisition period, either.  It fell to Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic monarchs of Spain, in 1492, which completed the reconquest of Spain by Christian forces.  Andalusia as an Islamic outpost had declined steadily for most of the previous 150 years.

And at least as far as Wikipedia reports, suspected Muslims got the easiest treatment from the Inquisition until at least 1530, far easier than suspected “crypto-Jews” and Protestants.  For the most part, the Inquisition used evangelization rather than trials and torture on Muslims; Jews got a much different treatment.  So if anyone was responsible for tolerance relating to Muslims and Christians in the Inquisition period of Andalusia, it would have been the Christians demonstrating it, as they were the ones in power.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

he also said this:

On education, we will expand exchange programs, and increase scholarships, like the one that brought my father to America, while encouraging more Americans to study in Muslim communities. And we will match promising Muslim students with internships in America; invest in on-line learning for teachers and children around the world; and create a new online network, so a teenager in Kansas can communicate instantly with a teenager in Cairo.

Isn’t that called Facebook?

A few other fun facts from the speech:

Louis Pasteur was a Muslim
All the rocket scientists who put Neil Armstrong on the moon were Muslims (as is Neil himself)
Don Drysdale was a Muslim, which is the real reason the evil Joooooo, Sandy Koufax retired, not wanting to share a team with the tolerant Muslim.

Volume 9 book 84 of Sahih Bukhari
Narrated ‘Ikrima:

Some Zanadiqa (atheists) were brought to ‘Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn ‘Abbas who said, “If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah’s Apostle forbade it, saying, ‘Do not punish anybody with Allah’s punishment (fire).’ I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah’s Apostle, ‘Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.’”

Obama is the maximum destroyer. The destruction of civilization left in his wake will take an entire generation or more to fix. He is the anti-intellect, dedicated to twisting and distorting facts, re-writing history, in his quest to create a new hell on earth. It’s becoming more and more of a privilege each day to oppose him. It makes life worth living.

PBO also truly misrepresents the history of Islamic rule in Iberia, which was not nearly the example of “tolerance” and “enlightened rule” that modern mythology has made it out to be. See, for example, this article by Bat Ye’or and Andrew Bostum, or the extensive analysis in Bostum’s “Legacy of Islamic Anti-Semitism.”

The gates of Dan are dated to be built around 6000 BC. They are made of bricks and arched. So I am going to go out on a limb and say that molems didn’t invent the damn arch.

daesleeper on June 5, 2009 at 11:11 AM

Based on his find of an Olmec hematite artifact in Mesoamerica, radiocarbon dated to 1400-1000 BC, astronomer John Carlson has suggested that the Olmec might have discovered and used the geomagnetic lodestone compass earlier than 1000 BC. If true, this “predates the Chinese discovery of the geomagnetic lodestone compass by more than a millennium”.

I’m having trouble with the math here… is 1400 BC before or after AD 700?

But I’m pretty sure that Muslims built the Parthenon and the Colosseum in Rome. They also discovered the Sun and wrote the Pentateuch.

There were numerous pogroms (for a lack of a better word) during their occupation, in Seville, Cordoba, and Valencia to name a few cities, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Christians and Jews.

Is it possible/probable that his favorite TV show in the 90’s was “Sliders”?

The show that each week the “Sliders” traveled to parallel alternative versions of the world history. A parallel universe.

Cuz that could explain a lot.

Obama :

“When John F. Kennedy decided that we were going to put a man on the moon, he didn’t put a bounty out for some rocket scientist to win – he put the full resources of the United States government behind the project and called on the ingenuity and innovation of the American people.

Actually our ability to put a man on the moon was a direct result of our capture of NAZI scientists, chief among them DR. Wernher von Braun, the head of NASA at the time when we landed a man on the moon.

DR. Wernher von Braun also developed the V-2 rocket (arguably the first ICBM) which began raining down on England June 12th 1944 (6-days after D-Day, guess that made the NAZI’S mad, I’m sure FDR apologized for that)
