Obama’s Cairo speech: Surprisingly good
posted at 9:28 am on June 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I didn’t get the chance to watch Barack Obama’s Cairo speech live, although I’m sure that it will be chopped up on YouTube within the next couple of hours. Instead, I read the full text posted by Andrew Malcolm, as well as Andrew’s commentary, and in most ways, it wouldn’t differ from a similar speech given by any recent American President. In fact, the Cairo audience may have been a little surprised about the depth of the defense of Israel’s right to exist in peace, as well as the strong denunciation of 9/11 Trutherism that has been wildly popular among Arabs, even though Osama bin Laden claimed credit long ago for the attack.
Not surprisingly, Obama emphasized the rights of Palestinians to live in their own state, which the Washington Post’s Howard Schneider reported via Twitter prompted a lot of head-nodding. Obama added this scolding to Arab nations, though, that may have come as a surprise:
Finally, the Arab States must recognize that the Arab Peace Initiative was an important beginning, but not the end of their responsibilities. The Arab-Israeli conflict should no longer be used to distract the people of Arab nations from other problems. Instead, it must be a cause for action to help the Palestinian people develop the institutions that will sustain their state; to recognize Israel’s legitimacy; and to choose progress over a self-defeating focus on the past.
That was a not-so-subtle jab at the practice of various Arab and Muslim states to use the Palestinian issue to whip up anti-Israel sentiment for their own domestic purposes. Egypt has diplomatic relations with Israel, but is not above doing some of that itself, which makes this jab a little more sharp, given the setting. It seems a little surprising — and refreshing — that Obama would challenge this practice in a speech in Cairo.
Israel, Obama said, has to accept a two-state solution with real sovereignty. Well, they have, on numerous occasions. They’ve also withdrawn from Gaza; Obama appeared to blame Israel for the misery of the Gazans, rather than Hamas, who keeps launching wars against Israel. Obama could have shown a little more backbone in pointing that out, and it seems like pandering to have avoided it. However, he did instruct the audience about Israel’s right to exist:
America’s strong bonds with Israel are well known. This bond is unbreakable. It is based upon cultural and historical ties, and the recognition that the aspiration for a Jewish homeland is rooted in a tragic history that cannot be denied.
Around the world, the Jewish people were persecuted for centuries, and anti-Semitism in Europe culminated in an unprecedented Holocaust. Tomorrow, I will visit Buchenwald, which was part of a network of camps where Jews were enslaved, tortured, shot and gassed to death by the Third Reich. Six million Jews were killed – more than the entire Jewish population of Israel today. Denying that fact is baseless, ignorant, and hateful. Threatening Israel with destruction – or repeating vile stereotypes about Jews – is deeply wrong, and only serves to evoke in the minds of Israelis this most painful of memories while preventing the peace that the people of this region deserve.
Speaking of baseless, ignorant, and hateful, Obama tried to set the record straight on 9/11, and set a baseline for American security:
The situation in Afghanistan demonstrates America’s goals, and our need to work together. Over seven years ago, the United States pursued al Qaeda and the Taliban with broad international support. We did not go by choice, we went because of necessity. I am aware that some question or justify the events of 9/11. But let us be clear: al Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people on that day. The victims were innocent men, women and children from America and many other nations who had done nothing to harm anybody. And yet Al Qaeda chose to ruthlessly murder these people, claimed credit for the attack, and even now states their determination to kill on a massive scale. They have affiliates in many countries and are trying to expand their reach. These are not opinions to be debated; these are facts to be dealt with.
Make no mistake: we do not want to keep our troops in Afghanistan. We seek no military bases there. It is agonizing for America to lose our young men and women. It is costly and politically difficult to continue this conflict. We would gladly bring every single one of our troops home if we could be confident that there were not violent extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan determined to kill as many Americans as they possibly can. But that is not yet the case.
Most of the rest of the speech was standard boilerplate, heavy on the compatibility of Islam and America and historical examples going back to our founding. Obama didn’t mention the Barbary Pirates, but he did note that the US has over 1200 mosques and claimed that almost 8 million Muslims live in the US. That number is the subject of dispute; CAIR claims 8 million, but the CIA and other surveys put it at less than 2 million. For the purposes of this audience, Obama used the highest number, apparently to make the biggest impression.
Did it work? Schneider says it only received light applause at the end, so perhaps Obama told a few too many hard truths for Egyptian tastes — which is why we questioned that decision. On the whole, though, Obama defended American positions on Israel and Afghanistan with more strength than he does here at home.
Of course, the big question will be whether this does anything at all for our standing in the Muslim world. Frankly, I doubt it; this may wind up eroding Obama’s standing instead. Still, a much better effort than I’d feared.
Update: Yid with Lid strongly disagrees with me on Obama’s defense of Israel, so be sure to read all of his post.
Update II: I note on Twitter that plenty of people are upset with Obama’s quoting of the Koran and his positive spin on Islam, ie, “religion of peace,” “Golden Rule,” etc. He is in Cairo, after all, and to quote an old aphorism, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Appealing to people’s better natures is a rhetorical device with a long history — and a long history of mixed results. However, I don’t hear anything in this speech that Bush didn’t say himself.
Update III: I would also say that I didn’t see much apologizing for America in this speech, but that there was some; Obama mentions Gitmo and the 1950s coup d’etat in Iran. Also, Michelle takes my point about the tenor of this speech sounding a lot like Bush’s, but she consistently objected to that in Bush’s speeches as well.

I think all this speech does is give our enemies the feeling that we are weak under The One’s leadership. We had much the same with both Carter and Clinton and we know how that turned out. I somehow doubt Hamas, the Hezzies, Iran, North Korea, and the Taliban will be moved by The One’s rhetoric and lay down arms. Equating the Holocaust with the Palistinian plight is absurd. He really wasn’t all the forceful in indicating that Israel has a right to exist as a nation other than the Palis should also have their own nation state as a consolation. Do they really think that everyday Arabs are going to rise up and tell Hamas and Hezzbolah to give it up and get a life. As of a day or so ago, their official line was the elimination of Israel. I suspect it still is. He seems intent on throwing Israel under the bus for the sake of a solution.

He conveniently forgot about the Civil War.
He intentionally overlooked the UN Resolution declaring Israel a Jewish State.
He apologized for the USA waterboarding a few top terrorist in a Country with a reputation for using the most violent interrogation techniques in the world. And that drew applause? WTF???
He also drew a moral equivalence to the so called Palestinians and the Jews in the Holocaust.
Ed, your post is extremely disappointing. If this is good then we are in for a miserable future.

No, Bush didn’t give as many speeches. If he strung out a sentence without a gaffe, mispronounciation or little giggle all of America let out a sigh of relief. If he has went to the Middle East to give this speech, we’d no doubt already have nuclear weapons in the air on the way here due to his diarrhea of the mouth. I’m glad we have a thoughtful President who would rather reach out and communicate then just rain bombs on women and children to show how “tough” he is.

I’m with you on this one Ed. In a face society that hides behind comforting lies this speech is important for some basic truths that were bluntly stated.
Not all truths were stated, there were some oddities but I don’t think the importance of this speech given by this particular president to this audience in this location can be denied. It is the closest we will get to an evil empire speech than we will ever see.

More nuggets from the insane speech:
LOL. They understand this sort of junk in Egypt, where they still teach their kids that they won the ’73 war.
“Since our founding”? This is too funny. And this list could easily apply to any group.
Really?
And also attacked and tore down our second and third tallest. I guess that a fair trade, huh?
Oh gee.
I hope no one ever finds out why Jefferson had that Koran, because it had nothing to do with any love of islam. Quite the opposite. It’s good that he didn’t try quoting the Marines’ Hymn lyrics, at this point. That would have brought up some “unpleasant” history (and the Traitor-in-Chief would have to apologize for Jefferson and the nasty US, again).
This speech is full of this crap.

There was good and bad,but one theme I am getting tired of hearing is the “we can’t impose or force our system of government on other people”.
I agree that Iraq/Afghanistan will incorporate their own systems of “democracy” under Muslim leadership.
But we have not “imposed” or “forced” anyone into a free and representative government.
Iraq has voted many, many, times by the people for the people for their own system of government as well as Afghanistan.
The people of these countries have chosen this with their actions, not by force from the United States.
We eradicated the genocidal, terrorist leaderships that prevented the people from having a representative government.
Enough with the Chomsky,Imperialistic drivel.

Read Robert Spencer’s take on this. It was the height of naivety to say what the President did. And it was insulting to logical thought and reality.
The speech only said one thing to Islamists. The Caliphate is coming and we should redouble our efforts because the US is rolling over on it’s back and submitting.
Asher on June 4, 2009 at 10:28 AM
Let’s face it, Obama is truly a liar. He makes up information and pretends it is fact. He basically said that the Jews and the Hamas terrorists are equally responsible for terrorism in Israel. He just came from the racist, hatemongering Saudi regime where he said he took counsel from “his majesty” and then he tells us that the Jews can no longer build homes. His spokeman Valerie Jarrent was on FNS saying that there are 8 million muslims in the US. Really?? How about 2.8MM at the very most, those are fed gov statistics. He says that palestinian Christians suffered at the hands of the Jews when in fact it is Arab muslims that are constantly attacking the christians in Judea and Samaria. Obama is a craftly politician that will say anything, true or not, just to support his massive ego and personal self-righteousness. How on earth Ed could say this was a good speech is beyond me.
georgealbert on June 4, 2009 at 10:29 AM

I join this chorus.
Be educated. Read the Qur’an to know what it says, and what it does not say. Our Founding Fathers were amongst the most literate men in Western Civilization; of course Jefferson would own his own Qur’an, specifically as our nation’s dealings with the Barbary Pirates were his responsibility.
As we today wrest with radical Islam, of course we should study in order to have reliable information to base our conclusions.
But Obama in Chicago was not seeking any religion of peace, only the corrupt pursuit of absolute power via deceit.
Obama can speak with all the flowery sweet scents of rationale. How does that determine what he is accomplishing? Note well the coming international results and consequences from Obama’s buttered up sweet talk. I’ll wait and see, but not be conned by sweet talk when consequence consistently proves such an open mind is prey to deceit.

Pew, 2007:
“In Lebanon, for example, just 34% of Muslims say suicide bombings in the defense of Islam are often or sometimes justified; Palestinians stand out for their broad acceptance of suicide bombing. Seven-in-ten-Palestinians say this tactic is at least sometimes justified.”
Nigeria – 40% approve
Turkey – 16% approve
Bangladesh – 20% approve
…. add it all up, and of the 1 billion worldwide muslims, you have about 200,000,000 MUSLIMS who say that suicide bombing of civilians is JUSTIFIED.

Yes. Israel has a stake in America’s success. Obama wants both countries to fail. And is doing everything he can to turn us into Venezuela. Soon it will not be just Rush using the word fascist. I hope it isn’t too late when that word starts to be whispered on Huffington Post.
Rahm Emmanuel is a traitor to his heritage and should be ashamed. Any Jew who supports Obama should be deeply ashamed.
I get it Ed. I think Obama gives a good speech too. Every time he gives a good speech full of words that mean nothing. Great delivery–empty of meaning.
I look at what he does and it is the opposite of what he says. That takes away the impact of pretty words for me.

From your mouth to Rush’s ear :)

YOu’re an idiot.
The reason why we on hotair decry polls is beacuse in the “who would you vote for?” polls most polling outlets these days don’t just call 1,000 people and if it’s 500 for the dem candidate, 500 votes for the GOP candidate, & call it a “TIE”….. the MSM polling outlets do somethingn called “SAMPLING” where they say “hm, ok, well, um, there are REALLY 15% more democrats than answered the phone, so let’s shift the numbers to 575 dem, 425 gop. BLOWOUT!”
in fact, i’ll give you 20 bucks if you can find a political poll thread that has hotair commenters decrying the results wihtout a mention of sampling D+something, or the partisan shift.
can’t do it.
and, as for your other point, “PEW” is a “REPUBLICAN POLL?” you’re as bad as chrissy matthews, he decried rasmussen the other day as “thats a gop poll we dont do those”, so then he showed a graphic of a NYT poll.
Here’s your chance to make 20 bucks! Go forth and search!

So very true…

For that?? I didn’t say W. killed those people. I was stating the facts. Wow, someone has a low threshold for disagreements.

David Duke also was a democrat. False analogy. He preferred neither.
Fred Phelps, on the other hand, is a democrat, has run as a democrat, and was a big al gore fan pre-global warming.

They are commanded to wage jihad in their book- the Koran (which Hussein Ogabe praised twice today) and by jihad, they mean holy war against the Infidels, not “inner struggle,” a taqiya lie.
Jihad is one of the 5 holy duties of all Muslims.
Not all Muslims are violent jihadis, but out of 1 billion adherents, all it takes is a significant percentage to kill quite a few infidels, as we’ve seen.

One dead. One injured this week alone. The blood is directly on Obama’s hands if he directed the FBI to stand down on Black Muslims.
And a whole airplane including 3 Americans just “disappeared”. This is just the beginning of the score for Obama. More is coming no doubt.

I’m not in favor of the ban-hammer either; if the comments are just misguided and naive (as most of yours are) but generally innocuous, why ban?
If you don’t like the comments of someone then don’t respond to them, simple as that.

Please,…a moment of silence for David Carradine.

The hell you didn’t.
MadisonConservative on June 4, 2009 at 10:52 AM
David Duke was summarily kicked out of the GOP, a fact you’ve conveniently ignored.
Jenfidel on June 4, 2009 at 10:52 AM
I don’t think anyone would consider these the same. I didn’t even touch the soldiers killed in the “WOT”. And now Obama is at fault for the plane crash?! It sounds as if you’re almost rooting for more deaths somewhere to score political points. Scary.

I remember someone once posting that Muslims think they have a bad rep because they are having people being racist against them.
In the immortal words of Andy Levy (more or less), Muslims have a bad rep because they won’t stop blowing sh*t up….
