Krauthammer on Obama’s speech: “Abstract, vapid, and self-absorbed”

posted at 8:19 pm on June 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

But … that’s so unlike Obama. I need to correct CK before I praise him, though: The One doesn’t blame the United States for colonialist attitudes towards the Middle East at the beginning of the speech. He blames “the West,” which is certainly true if the West includes Great Britain and France (and it surely does). In fact, he explicitly says further on, “Just as Muslims do not fit a crude stereotype, America is not the crude stereotype of a self-interested empire.”

That said, I’m embarrassed I missed the superb point he makes at the end about Obama’s moronic moral equivalence on women’s rights in my post earlier. It really is the most offensive part of the speech. I wonder, though, if The One feels compelled towards relativism because he’s a leftist or simply because, for all the hype, his oratory is formulaic and always includes a passage about how both sides to whatever conflict he’s addressing have legitimate grievances. That’s the real secret to his “post-partisanship”, I think: Unless absolutely forced to, he eschews taking a stand so that he can play President Above-it-all. To see just what a hack he is, have a look at this and note step 8 vis-a-vis Krauthammer’s critique. Inevitable.

I think the moral relativism is inherent in the leftiness of Obama. But it is made all the worse by his Above It Allness.

Thank you for noticing. That is how it will go, after The Precedent is finished destroying the US he will try to insure the destruction of Western civilization, which he hates with a passion. I’ve been saying this since way back in the campaign. This desire to exact revenge on the US and the West, for shaming and humiliating the third world through their great power and advances, is what motivates The Precedent. It’s that simple.

Obama shouldn’t have apologized for colonialist attitudes.

We shouldn’t apologize for that.

The Euro-trash should. They are the ones that systematically conquered people in those areas, then arbitrarily came up with ridiculous gerrymandering of international borders in those areas.

Not us.

I agree but what I don’t get is why Obama is so full of hate?
I got where it comes from but he is the product of and is enjoying now some pretty fine things.
If this hate is the product of pure indoctrination, which is what I’ve got to believe it is, there’s a lesson here that goes far beyond the current mess he is creating.

Europe has no reason to apologize for colonialism (except the Spanish and Portugese, who were awful).

Colonialism allowed the most backward, primitve people on Earth to have instant access to the great powers and see how nations were run. The best nations of the Earth were born out of European colonization. Those that weren’t able to put together working nations have no one but themselves to blame. And just the fact that anyone, today, would continue to blame colonialism is absurd, in the extreme.

And, BTW, it wasn’t Europeans who were in control of the middle east. The ottomans were controlling arabs for a very long time – muslims all. But, then, we have the situation where the Palestinians were “occupied” by Jordan and Egypt for 20 years without a peep, until that land got lost by them in another offensive war against Israel. Then, all of a sudden, they were “occupied”. LOL. And then, the Palestinians in the West Bank were the first ones to have access to universities and more Palestinians got citizenship in the US or Israel than in any arab country outside of the palestinian nation of Jordan.

Nothing to wonder about here. He is a leftist, and he uses moral equivalence arguments to advance a leftist agenda. If he can’t make a “US bad, Muslim world good” argument directly, he’ll make it indirectly. Being “President Above It All” is a means to an end, not an end in itself.

The Middle East has been chaotic for decades. I don’t surmise quality of life would have been better if they had never touched it, but methinks the chaos factor would be much less had the Europeans NOT come in and frogstomped everyone.

When General George Napier was governor of Sind province in India in the 1840s, he vigorously enforced the ban on suttee, the practice of throwing a Hindu widow on to the funeral pyre of her husband. A delegation of Brahmins came to him to explain that he must not prohibit the practice at the funeral of a particular maharaja, as it was an important cultural custom.

“If it is your custom to burn a widow alive, please go on,” Napier responded.

“We have a custom in our country that whoever burns a person alive shall be hanged. While you prepare the funeral pyre, my carpenters will be making the gallows to hang all of you. Let us all act according to our customs” The Brahmins thought better of it, and the widow lived.

From a Denis Dutton column on multiculturalism and moral relativism.

I understand your point, but the borders and the groups within them are not the source of the problems. Wherever we see borders that were cut in perfect agreement with ethnic lines they just have cross border battles. And the middle east hasn’t changed in a long, long time. Here’s a little tid-bit from Ibn Khaldun (Muqaddimah) in the 14th century:

24. Arabs can gain control only over flat territory.

This is because, on account of their savage nature, (the Arabs) are people who plunder and cause damage. They plunder whatever they are able to lay their hands on without having to fight or to expose themselves to danger. They then retreat to their pastures in the desert. They do not attack or fight except in self-defense. Every stronghold or (locality) that seems difficult (to attack), they bypass in favor of some less difficult (enterprise). They do not attack it. Tribes that are protected against (the Arabs) by inaccessible mountains are safe from their mischief and destructiveness. The Arabs would not cross hills or undergo hardship and danger in order to get to them.

Flat territory, on the other hand, falls victim to their looting and prey to their appetite whenever they (have the opportunity of) gaining power over it, when there is no militia, or when the dynasty is weak. Then they raid, plunder, and attack that territory repeatedly, because it is easily (accessible) to them. Eventually, its inhabitants succumb utterly to the Arabs and then they are pushed around by them in accordance with changes of control and shifts in leadership. Eventually, their civilization is wiped out. God has power over His creatures.

25. Places that succumb to the Arabs are quickly ruined.

The reason for this is that (the Arabs) are a savage nation, fully accustomed to savagery and the things that cause it. Savagery has become their character and nature. They enjoy it, because it means freedom from authority and no subservience to leadership. Such a natural disposition is the negation and antithesis of civilization. All the customary activities of the Arabs lead to travel and movement. This is the antithesis and negation of stationariness, which produces civilization. For instance, the Arabs need stones to set them up as supports for their cooking pots. So, they take them from buildings which they tear down to get the stones, and use them for that purpose. Wood, too, is needed by them for props for their tents and for use as tent poles for their dwellings. So, they tear down roofs to get the wood for that purpose. The very nature of their existence is the negation of building, which is the basis of civilization. This is the case with them quite generally.

Furthermore, it is their nature to plunder whatever other people possess. Their sustenance lies wherever the shadow of their lances falls. They recognize no limit in taking the possessions of other people. Whenever their eyes fall upon some property, furnishings, or utensils, they take it. When they acquire superiority and royal authority, they have complete power to plunder (as they please). There no longer exists any political (power) to protect property, and civilization is ruined.
[ ... ]

I highly recommend the Muqaddimah to all. It is very interesting.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not on an anti-Western streak. I realize that over centuries, even millenia, people’s conquer one another.

The native Americans here conquered someone before them, anthropologists are starting to see. I know it’s a cycle that happens over and over.

I guess my frustration stems from the condemnation of European snobs at us for trying to do something out of NOBLE intentions, after decades of their less than noble motivations and actions.

So it’s not necessarily that I DEPLORE the colonialism of Europeans (and you are right they did expose people to technology and modernity). I guess it’s the hypocrisy.

The continent of people that have done nothing but slaughter themselves and others over and over and over and over and over and over criticize us for our goodwill efforts.

He did mention the muslim’s ability to create great architecture and quiet contemplative places. I thought of the Alhambra when he said it. So perhaps he didn’t forget after all, and also yearns for the day when the quiet fountains there once again soothe the ears of the Sultan.

Has anyone actually read this speech? I couldn’t bring myself to listen to it, so I just read it.

On science and technology, we will launch a new fund to support technological development in Muslim-majority countries, and to help transfer ideas to the marketplace so they can create jobs. We will open centers of scientific excellence in Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and appoint new Science Envoys to collaborate on programs that develop new sources of energy, create green jobs, digitize records, clean water, and grow new crops. And today I am announcing a new global effort with the Organization of the Islamic Conference to eradicate polio. And we will also expand partnerships with Muslim communities to promote child and maternal health.

Sounds like he is planning to do alot more “investing” outside of the U.S. with OUR hard earned tax dollars!

I think the Palestinians have a long way to go before they can compare their problems to the Jews, especially when you consider how hard other nations are working for them. Hugh suggested that Mr. Obama might have a problem with people making moral equivalencies of slavery. He was talking to Mark Steyn.

Cindy Munford on June 4, 2009 at 9:10 PM

Don’t be embarrassed AP, you are not in Krauthammer’s league and never will be. It is pointless for you to even compare your analysis with his. No offense.

echosyst on June 4, 2009 at 9:08 PM

Ouch!

terryannonline on June 4, 2009 at 9:10 PM

His look to the camera at the end is awesome.

nickj116 on June 4, 2009 at 9:02 PM

Heh. Yeah, I caught that too. It’s as if he said, “I dare anyone to argue with that.”

Weight of Glory on June 4, 2009 at 9:10 PM

One thing you can say, Obama is full of himself, it bulges out everywhere.

Why do you hate AP so much?

This is something I have observed over time.

You are filled with a deep hatred for AP. It doesn’t make sense.

Yea, that made me laugh. Charles is the man. I wish he would run for office, though I think he’s much smarter than that.

Obama and his f$@#ing strawmen:

I reject the view of some in the West that a woman who chooses to cover her hair is somehow less equal.

DaveS on June 4, 2009 at 9:12 PM

If you didn’t know Obama was suppose to be President of the US,, and all you ever did was listen to these speeches you might think he was hiding in some hole or cave in Afghanistan sending out messages to his Islamic followers.

CK is great!

I will add Fox News should probably hire someone that is at Krauthammer’s intellectual level to debate him on that show because the other panel member’s seem like lightweights whenever he is on. Fair and balanced.

Yes, I think he did also compare the suffering of slaves in the South to the Palestinian situation. But then, I think Condi Rice once compared segregation in the Deep South to the Palestinians’ situation, too.

Faulty analogies are a common fallacy.

Did u not listen to a single word Krauthammer said? He knocked down the moral equivalency arguments as dumb and then make this kind of statement. I think you need to replay the video.

DaveS on June 4, 2009 at 9:12 PM

Well, it might not be a complete strawman. Obama may think that…

I have never seen Obama give any of the amazing oratory speeches he is so famous for. I see through crap, I guess.

Yea, what is that about? Is he talking about the fact that they can’t get drivers licenses with their heads gift wrapped and only their eyes protruding? Otherwise, who here cares what a Muslim woman chooses to wear?

If he really wanted to make a point… he could have compared the Palestinian “situation” with the horrible situation in Sudan…

That was great! I had forgotten that practice. Great illustration!

catlady on June 4, 2009 at 9:19 PM

I watched a lil bit of O’Reilly and he actually had a good point..Obama has to stop making references to American as the country who tortures…it was 3 guys already. Drop it already.
