Heart-ache: Fledgling blog fails to crack Wikio’s list of top 100 political sites

posted at 4:25 pm on June 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

I blame myself. We haven’t had nearly enough atheism posts around here lately.

Seriously, though, we get a thousand times the traffic of the blog at number 100. What’s it going to take, Wikio? More Meghan McCain material? More O’Reilly-bashing? More gentle criticism of Palin that’s treated as a ferocious attack by her supporters in the comments? Work with me.

One of the intriguing aspects of this list is that it puts everyone in the same pot. The list has mainstream media blogs — from ABC News, CNN, The New York Times, and others — alongside well-known partisan bloggers — Michelle Malkin, FireDogLake — and even government-run bloggers, like WhiteHouse.gov’s.

We got a sneak peek at the latest rankings — due to be published Friday — below. It’s a fun list to analyze: Huffington Post has the top spot, with the liberal Center for American Progress’ Think Progress and the conservative National Review’s The Corner right behind.

Also conspicuously absent from the list: Ace and Red State, among others. I could understand us being left off if this was a survey of political insiders or professional pundits; I’ve always thought HA punches way below its weight in terms of influence vis-a-vis traffic, especially compared to a site that’s read on the Hill like RS. But Wikio’s metric, supposedly, is based on inbound links. Any techies have any idea what might be up?

I’m sick of The Man keeping you down.

Exurban Jon on June 4, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Are the metrics being used really honest?

I’m not a techie, but I know my university is going through the same thing in measuring the traffic versus other Big 10 schools.

I think some companies metrics are not as accurate as others, but I don’t know.

Larry Farr on June 4, 2009 at 4:28 PM

Maybe if you oculd find a zoo with atheist penguins? ;)

amerpundit on June 4, 2009 at 4:29 PM

I would think your traffic would mirror Michele’s pretty closely, though I admit I rarely go to yours and practically live here.

That and the Corner. It’s kinda sad really…

Larry Farr on June 4, 2009 at 4:29 PM

posts of kate gosselin and all 8 of her A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E babies should do the trick.

Ghoul aid on June 4, 2009 at 4:30 PM

They probably count HotAir under Michelle Malkin

apollyonbob on June 4, 2009 at 4:30 PM

By the way, Hot Air is 132 on Wikio’s list. Not sure what metric they’re using to justify that result, though.

amerpundit on June 4, 2009 at 4:30 PM

It must be a Zionist Conspiracy, AP. ;)

newsbusters #10?? WOW I had no idea that site was so dang popular

ousoonerfan15 on June 4, 2009 at 4:31 PM

That is stupid. I would question their formulas for a list that would not include Hot Air but would include “Soccer Dad.” Not to pick on SD, but his stories have 3 comments, 8 comments, no comments, 4 comments. Something isn’t right.

Mallard T. Drake on June 4, 2009 at 4:31 PM

At least Treacher’s in there.

Hot Air, Ace and The Corner are the top 3 for me. I practically live on these three sites. U-N-D-E-R-R-A-T-E-D.

What’s it going to take, Wikio? More Meghan McCain material? More O’Reilly-bashing? More gentle criticism of Palin that’s treated as a ferocious attack by her supporters in the comments? Work with me.

Here are some things you can do to promote Hot Air:

Get breast implants, go on TV and declare that you favor “opposite marriage.”

Successfully land a passenger airliner in the Hudson River.

Charter a ship, go to the Gulf of Aden and kill pirates.

Mark1971 on June 4, 2009 at 4:32 PM

Actually I hit Michelle’s site AFTER yours… maybe Michelle is getting cross talk from the liberal blogs? (Y’know… “hate” hits?)

Skywise on June 4, 2009 at 4:32 PM

I wonder if they simply consider you a subsidiary of MM?

That’s being generous and giving them the benefit of the doubt, but it’s one possibility.

amerpundit on June 4, 2009 at 4:33 PM

Wikio’s metric, supposedly, is based on inbound links. Any techies have any idea what might be up?

It’s a bit more than inbound links, if you read it.

This site really doesn’t get a lot of links from many of the sites in the top 100.

Inbound links is and has always been a faulty measurement, though. If your traffic is high, who cares.

lorien1973 on June 4, 2009 at 4:34 PM

Treacher.. awesome.

Allah… WTF dude? Maybe we need to have you take some points from Treacher.

Using the Obama “Apology Tour” tactic to draw in traffic. Work’s for the ONE, give it a try.

WashJeff on June 4, 2009 at 4:34 PM

Be sure to update if you get an explanation. I’m anticipating that it’s a flub on their part, probably based on some programming issue either in the way this site works or how their criteria was implemented.

Sorry, I don’t have a blog myself, so I can’t help you out that way. But if it helps, we can start putting your links in other message blogs.

Sort of “Well I disagree, and here’s the link at HotAir to show you.” (laugh)

The reporting and opining by HA’s official bloggers is way above the standard of many other right-leaning blogs. The fact-checking and editing alone put HA on par with most newspapers’ online editions.

I guess you guys are just too good to be taken less-than-seriously or blindly promote partisan talking points. But you’re not big enough to contend with NRO.

Larry Farr on June 4, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Moreover, the weight of a link depends on the linking blog’s position in the Wikio ranking. With our algorithm, the weight of a link from a blog that is more highly ranked is greater than that of a link from a blog that is less well ranked.

That is the prime source, along with aforementioned RSS links from other sites.

Odie1941 on June 4, 2009 at 4:40 PM

Allah, Meghan is weighing you down.

Got to step it up. Bring in more flair to the site. Get some politicians to write op-eds, have video interviews with conservative biggies: Gutfeld, Michelle, Rush, Mark Levin, Gateway Pundit, Palin (if she forgives you), Beck, etc.

Still shocking though you guys are not in top 100. It’s one of the sites I go to consistently. Hey Drudge is not on the list, and he gets more hits than probably the Top 50 combined.
Hot Air is the diamond in the rough.

I agree with several others here, the writing quality between you and Ed is simply beyond compare. Different writing styles, different opinion in some cases, but both are always well sourced, and thought out. Outrage, when genuine outrage is called for, and a calm reasoning on less-than-outragous matters.

I pretty much live here, don’t often comment, and I find it interesting that you two are putting up stories and analysis often times BEFORE Druge gets to it.

It must be links on lefty blogs because nothing gets hits more than pretty ladies, which I assume Ace still posts.

Correct me if I am wrong Allah, but your return visit traffic is pretty high, is it not? I am guessing while you may get 100 times more traffic than the #100 on that list, you do not get a lot of links to your site from external sources. Then you have to consider what this list considers as sources for external links. Does Wikio pull it’s inbound-link data from main stream press sites like ABC and CNN that link to blog articles as its primary source for “inbound” links? That would be my guess. I remember reading about this Wikio metric a few months back and thought it would come off as wrong.

After reading their rules – RSS feeds are “fixed” , coded links that automatically get “counted” as an inbound hit. If you copy and past hotair.com somewhere – say Huffpo -even if 100 people click it – it counts as 0 inbound “hard” links.

Combined with they weigh “high Wikio” placed sites more – and as I said earlier – thats the issue.
