CQ: Sotomayor repeatedly made “wise woman”/”wise Latina” remarks in speeches
posted at 9:59 pm on June 4, 2009 by Allahpundit
“Repeatedly” as in not just once in 1994 and again in 2001 but over and over in the interim, and even after. Must be an awfully important insight into her thinking for it to recur so often, huh?
Then again, like Slublog says, who among us has not misspoken the exact same phrase dozens of times?
A draft version of a October 2003 speech Sotomayor delivered at Seton Hall University stated, “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would, more often than not, reach a better conclusion.” That is identical to her October 2001 remarks at the University of California, Berkeley that have become the subject of intense criticism by Republican senators and prompted conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh to label her “racist.”
In addition, Sotomayor delivered a series of earlier speeches in which she said “a wise woman” would reach a better decision. She delivered the first of those speeches in Puerto Rico in 1994 and then before the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York in April 1999.
The summary descriptions of speeches Sotomayor provided indicated she delivered remarks similar to the 1994 speech on three other occasions in 1999 and 2000 during two addresses at Yale and one at the City University of New York School of Law.
I wish I had more sympathy for her perspective here, but as a white male, I’m biologically handicapped. Perhaps our wise women commenters, with the richness of their experience, will rally to her defense. Oh, another fun fact: According to her financial disclosures, she owes in excess of $400,000 to various creditors. I hope for The One’s sake that none of them is the IRS.

Just on this information alone, she seems like a perfect Obama pick.

Um she has a decent balance sheet with net worth over half million. I was supporting her, but I’m turning against her. She really does seem to be a person that sees things through a racial and gender biased lens. That is a terrible characteristic for a judge.
Ted Torgerson on June 4, 2009 at 10:07 PM
This makes Michael Medved’s lengthy defense of her on the air today all the more laughable. Given his early and continued support for John McCain, I’m beginning to think he may just be wrong on everything.
Jeff_McAwesome on June 4, 2009 at 10:07 PM
If she is confirmed, it will be because of completely inept and impotent Republicans, afraid of their own shadow and guided by political correctness, rather than principle.

Republicans need to play this smart and be sure to defeat her ideas and not the person.
Go after this crazy identity politics that polls show the public – all races and ethnicities – are rejecting.
Don’t go after the person. Go after the ideology.
They do that and it’s a win-win.

Not on his own, anyway.
Daggett on June 4, 2009 at 10:14 PM
I think this woman has self esteem problems.
I can’t think of any other reason one would repeat a line like that so often – it’s not that she’s trying to convince others – it’s that’s she’s trying to convince herself.
The more I hear about her – the more I think she’s a better candidate for a psychiatric couch than a spot on the SCOTUS.

Basically, she is saying that, if you are a white guy defending yourself against an Hispanic woman in her court,,you,, as the white guy,, are already screwed.
No,,, that’s not racist at all.
See,, we are all equal but there are those who are more equal.
And it’s all unfolding right before our eyes.
And the RINO’s???? Well, they’re out picking daisies on the flowered covered hills.
JellyToast on June 4, 2009 at 10:14 PM
How about we base decisions on the Constitution. If after that the people don’t like it the decision, it can fixed. I know our Founders where just white men without the full richness of life of a Latina but they developed an amazing form of government and I would appreciate it if folks would use it instead of revamping it.

thecountofincognito on June 4, 2009 at 10:15 PM
That doesn’t seem like much at all, when you consider that most of it is her mortgage and she lives in NYC … and that her assets exceed $1 million.
However, what seems strange to me is that she amassed this level of assets while having worked in the public sector for all but a few years of her adult life. Federal judges don’t make starvation wages, but their compensation isn’t really a hell of a lot compared to what they could make in private practice. Where’d she make all that money?
Alex_SF on June 4, 2009 at 10:16 PM
The fact that she has said it repeatedly is evidence of her extreme comfort with her audience and assumption that her views are perfectly logical and acceptable as the norm. In video, she appears to be a loud-mouth. She is “in your face” and feels perfectly justified in being so.

I’ll play devil’s advocate. Maybe she’s just saying that she has had experiences that are different from a white male and give her different perspective. Although, that still doesn’t excuse the “better” part. But maybe (I know I’m stretching) she is saying that those unique experience puts her “better” position her to have empathy.
I tried!

Here ya go, AP. As a woman of a certain age I can tell you loads about Sonia.
She is also a woman of a certain age. And what her thinking represents is the worst of the feminist movement. I was surrounded when I was younger by militant feminists, and I found them to be repugnant.
Equality does not mean diminishing others or degrading them., but that is what feminists have tried to do. Like many movements feminists went over the top. African Americans have done the same. Other groups are trying to. Everyone piles on order to claim themselves as a protected species deserving of special treatment.
I heard all that the feminists were saying and rejected much of it even though I faced the problems they were railing about. In the end, one has to navigate the waters, so to speak, and succeed. The mentors and friends who helped me were not not the Gloria Steinems of this world. they were men who knew how to succeed. They taught me how to get on.
I absolutely loath identity politics.
Cody1991 on June 4, 2009 at 10:32 PM

Sotomayor smells, so does Obama. They are both angry people who seek to exact revenge on those they feel have slighted them and other members of their groups of grievance mongers. The Republicans in Congress have a duty to fight this nomination tooth and nail. I have not doubt that Obama agreed with every one of Wright’s words.

In Latin America, Liberal Jesuits have had significant influence in the development of liberation theology, a movement which has been highly controversial in the Catholic theological community and condemned by Pope John Paul II on several fundamental aspects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesuits
I didn’t know till I just read that Barack Obama’s speech writer was Jesuit trained…
So Sonia Sotomayer is she of Portuguese descent? Has she been exposed to Black Liberation Theology? What kind of Catholic upbringing did she have? Since so much is being made of her ethnicity isn’t anyone curious what her ethnicity actually is? Puerto Rico is an Island not an ethnicity. Sonia’s parents came from Puerto Rico were they exposed to Black Liberation Theology? Because our President went to a church, that was based on Black Liberation Theology. If Sonia Sotomayer is Barack Obama’s mirror image on the Supreme Court, wouldn’t she need to be sharing some common background?

The declaring of the people of Puerto Rico as property of the U.S. and many of the oppressive policies of Manifest Destiny should be examined, critiqued, and denounced from faith perspectives. In short, U.S. history has a mixed legacy of tragedy and freedom both should be examined closely. The voices of oppressed and marginalized groups are a prophetic gift to this examination.
