Cairo: Tough crowd
posted at 2:15 pm on June 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
When Barack Obama delivers a big speech, he’s accustomed to receiving a large demonstration of adulation. Often, people faint at the mere sound of his voice. In Cairo, however, while Obama laid a dollop of truth onto the crowd amid the usual quotient of pandering, the crowd gave Obama a new kind of response:
You want a tough crowd? Go to Cairo and deliver a speech on Muslims, Jews, terrorism and the possibilities of Mideast peace.
While President Barack Obama received some applause and cheers during his address at Cairo University Thursday, at other times his speech fell flatter than a piece of pita bread.
To no one’s surprise, the audience liked the positive references to Islam, including an interesting one regarding the Golden Rule that Obama’s domestic audience found a little puzzling. However, when it came to Obama defending American positions, the crowd clammed up tighter than the Sphinx:
But other lines, such as when Obama vowed to protect the American people from violent attack, were met with stony silence.
“In Ankara, I made clear that America is not – and never will be – at war with Islam,” Obama said. “We will, however, relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to our security. (Silence from the crowd.) Because we reject the same thing that people of all faiths reject: the killing of innocent men, women, and children. (More silence.) And it is my first duty as president to protect the American people.” More silence.
And when the president talked about the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on America, he was met with only stares from the audience. “But let us be clear,” the president said, “Al Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people on that day. The victims were innocent men, women and children from America and many other nations who had done nothing to harm anybody. And yet Al Qaeda chose to ruthlessly murder these people, claimed credit for the attack, and even now states their determination to kill on a massive scale. They have affiliates in many countries and are trying to expand their reach. These are not opinions to be debated; these are facts to be dealt with.”
The first press reports tried to paint this as a rousing success on the ground. Articles around the world made sure to mention that a few people shouted, “We love you!” from the crowd. Washington Post reporter Howard Schneider’s Twitter feed gave the first hints that Obama didn’t fare well, noting that the crowd only offered light applause at the end.
Will that meme remain the final impression, or will Politico’s report gain any traction? I’m betting on the former.

So, Ed, in Obama’s “surprisingly good” speech did you like him comparing the holocaust to the palestinian situation?
How about his silence on the maltreatment of women; and instead thinks its all about the head ware.

Not to defend the president – far be it from me, but when you are addressing an audience who is also making sure what everyone else is doing (and ready to denounce one another at the drop of a sharia) it is hard to get anyone too worked up.
I’m sure there were folks there who would welcome escape from the tyranny of the present state. Offering them yet another tyranny is not exactly going to get anybody to risk his or her neck in supporting you.

Rush had a pretty good takedown of the President’s Cairo speech today:
Obama in Cairo.
That statement by President Obama is not correct and could better be described as pandering. Now let me say this, the West did obtain many lost Western classics from Islamic libraries and scholars. Islamic scholars did make contributions. But Islam did not invent albebra, or the compass, or disease theory, or printing. And while I enjoy the architecture of old Arab Cairo as much as the next buyer of carpets, gold and hammered brass goods does, Islam did not invent the arch. But it gets worse…
Where the President really messed up was speaking of the Holocaust (which is good he refuted Arab Holocaust deniers) but then linking the Holocaust to the current plight of Palestinians. I am sorry, but these events are not comparable. Not in the least. While the Palestinian plight is terrible, it is mostly self inflicted and neighboring Arab countries have far more to answer for it than Israeli Jews do.

In the islamic world…only a muslim can be “innocent”. Infidels…not so much…not at all in fact. For the koran tells them so.
The koran is nothing but hate speech. Read it for yourself. Winston Churchill didn’t call islam, “the Religion of Blood and Death” for nuthin’…
islam is a lie and Truth is killing it.

Islam does not adhere to the Golden Rule. The closest that Islam comes to this principle is a hadith that says:
“None of you [truly] believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.” [Number 13 of Imam "Al-Nawawi's Forty Hadiths."]
The same hadith is reported by Bukhari 1.2.12
“The Prophet said, “None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.”
This brotherhood however does not extend to everyone. Quran (9:23) states that the believers should not take for friends and protectors (awlia) their fathers and brothers if they love Infidelity above Islam. In fact there are many verses that tell the Muslims to kill the unbelievers and be harsh with them. A clear example that Islam is not based on the Golden Rule is the verse (48:29) It says: “Muhammad is the messenger of Allah; and those who are with him are strong against Unbelievers, (but) compassionate amongst each other.”

I have no doubts, that some of the crickets heard chirping, from lack of applause, was due to Obama’s skewed history. I don’t think those in attendance are stupid, and recognized pandering, and falsities, in the speech.
Perhaps, they were amazed how he could stand up there, with a straight face, and give such a misguided account of history?

Note the last three sentences of Ed’s excerpt:
Look at that last sentence. I realize that Obama was trying to create a certain sing-songy parallelism for rhetorical effect: “These are not [A] to be [B]; these are [Y] to be [Z].”
But notice how mealy-mouthed he is about facts. “[T]o be dealt with”? WTF does that mean?
If Obama were an American leader, he’d have said: “These are not opinions to be discussed and debated; these are facts to be acknowledged and accepted.”
What a gutless POS.

Obama turning his back on Israel, stating that we can’t deny other countries the rights to nuclear weapons because we have them(Iran is the worlds leading supporter of terrorism, kills American Soldiers, and has declared over and over their desire to destroy Israel, unlike America.Big difference)and stating we can’t force our way of government on other Nations(Iraq/Afghanistan have voted many times for their form of government, not been forced) are my main sticking points in this speech.
Although I think Obama did do well in some areas(such as the ones highlighted by the Captain),I am in the same opinion as the AP quote from the Israeli settlers council:

The audiences silence at those times speaks loudly on how they truly feel about the West and our values.
Again their silence speaks loudly; they are puzzled and miffed that the US and the free west would actually dare to defend ourselves instead of surrendering and bowing to their draconian Sharia law as the return of the Caliphate no peace with the infidels is their true ambition!
Again the audiences silence and blank stares speak loudly; they are silent because they don’t see the victims of the 9-11 murders as “victims” but instead view them as guilty infidels that deserved to die as it is Allah’s will that the world be ruled by Islam under Sharia law and therefore any act that works toward that goal is not only justified but righteous according to Allah and the Koran!
Also, Islam and the Arabs are the people/religion of perpetual victimhood, in their eyes they are the true victims in the world and until all infidels are killed and the goal of a world subservient under Islam’s Sharia is attained then wholesale murder of men, women, and children is not only justified but it is the duty of all good and pious Muslims!
