Video: Did Brian Williams bow to Barack Obama?

posted at 11:29 am on June 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Drudge has this one, and Stormin’ Morning Java has the still. When I first saw it, I thought, “Nah. Brian Williams must have looked down. Americans don’t bow to their political leaders, and especially not the American media.” Wrong!

We made hay when Obama bowed to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, and this feels almost as bad. Shouldn’t the American media have more of a sense of separation, observance, and skepticism? All right, all right, stop laughing.

Bonus question: If Williams bowed, what would Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews do to wish the President a good night? On second thought, I don’t want to know.

It was a joke a few days ago about showing more respect for Obama, but suddenly the nickname “King Hussein” fits perfectly after the news of the last 24 hrs.

econavenger on June 3, 2009 at 1:18 PM

One always acknowledges the Master Race or a Master by bowing…

Shaking hands implies equality…

You will be expected to bow to the Religious Police when they come knocking at your door.

Friendly21 on June 3, 2009 at 1:20 PM

Eh. Nodding, or bowing one’s head slightly to a fellow American (who in this case is the President) is far different from a full bend over like B.H.O. did for Abdullah.

I was raised to curtsy to adults as a child. So what?

He’d received his marching orders, it’s only proper that he bow as he exits…forgot to click his heels though.

Americans don’t bow to their political leaders,

Unless their leaders are Muslims; and in that case, a bow is mandatory.

I always thought this pretty boy Williams was a laughable wuss. This just confirms it.

Is Williams converting to Islam?

d1carter on June 3, 2009 at 12:50 PM

Once Obama formally “converts” to Islam I think we’ll see a lot of the state-run media convert as well as huge numbers of school teachers and kids.

As someone commented last night, conversion is where Obama is going with his statements as he slowly steps out of the shadows. He’s going to personally lead America into the Islamic community, supported by his media sycophants.

This is far more important, from Dick Morris (“The Real Saudi Bow”):

But as he goes to Saudi Arabia, the United States State Department, headed by Mrs. Hillary Clinton, has announced that it has accepted the ground rules for media coverage of the Obama visit to the royal family and its domain. Reporters will only be allowed to cover the actual meetings between the Saudis and Obama and will not be permitted to visit the rest of the country or report on anything else they see during the trip. Those reporters who violate these terms are subject to arrest and imprisonment by the Saudi government!!

Hillary and Obama accepted these terms…

Brian Williams is a tool. What’s next, following him to the bathroom in order to wipe his a$$. After that they can report on the circumstances of said bowel movement and how Obama’s “evacuation” policies are so “historical” that they should be implimented during any form of “crisis”. MAybe if he “bears down and pushes” the media will actaully be evacuated from his bowels. Not likely.

For the commenters who are trying to make this clip a non-issue; show me the clip of any network anchor head-bowing to George W.

It also makes me think that they better keep Chris Matthews away from Obama, he’d be dry humping his leg by the end of the interview.

smellthecoffee on June 3, 2009 at 2:08 PM

I have to respectfully disagree with you. I feel this is a big deal. This is a pattern happening, and it leads down a road, that I don’t think a majority of Americans really want to go. It reeks big time. NBC, and MSNBC are owned by GE, and all stand to make a great deal of money, if cap, and trade is passed.

So was Mr. Williams bow, a suck up, to keep that contract, or was this a sign of things to come? Throughout the campaign, people were excoriated, for bringing up Obama’s muslim father, and stepfather. Racist accusations were made toward anyone who dared utter Obama’s middle name. Now we have him touting his muslim side, and a suck up reporter making a bow.

I’m betting, this leads somewhere. We’re only 5 months in, on an allegedly 4 years in office.

Pathetic pusillanimous press pimp.

(Maybe Brian Williams should change his name to Curt Nod.)

profitsbeard on June 3, 2009 at 3:20 PM

I just didn’t see this one as a big deal. The media is up Obama’s ass, so it’s not surprising to see a little physical genuflecting. I wouldn’t do it, but I’m not a leftist.

The bigger problem is the way they control the flow of information in Obama’s favor. This is just a symptom of it.

But the truth on the other matter is that Obama definitely bowed, deeply, to the Saudi king (who did not return the gesture), and Bush leaned over to have something hung around his neck. There is no comparison.

capitalist piglet on June 3, 2009 at 3:29 PM

Yep, Blatantblue, Williams was certainly sucking up. But then, he was also verrrry grateful for this exculsive show.

Brian didn’t deeply bow and scrape (a complete jacknife at the waist), like Obie did to the Saudi king, but it was a lot like the bows I see at church at communion time…so as far as I’m concerned, this bow, to a mere mortal, was way over the top. Looked a lot like worship to me. And reflexively Obama did a little dip back in response, which just emphasizes that Obama noticed Williams’ fealty and responded correctly to Williams’ patronage bow. Disgusting.

As far as the bow, it was shameful. What makes Williams think that he, the lowliest of servants, is fit to do aught but prostrate himself before Barack (peace be upon him)?

kurtzz3 on June 3, 2009 at 4:28 PM

If you all have not seen the NBC “Inside in the White House” special, I suggest you watch it. It was very interesting. Well, at least the part that shows his staff.

They all looked like incompetent morons. Rahm could not answer the most simple softballs thrown at him by Williams. They were there the day after Sotomayer was picked, and they were all in a panic over critism of her on cable tv (which they all say they dont watch, but they all actually have these special tvs that show four stations at a time, all tuned to cable news on their desks, font and center…they were watching it constantly). They were all having politcal strategy meetings worrying about politics and that was all they were concerned about all day. Geitner got snubbed several times throughout the day because nobody had time to meet with him because they were all panicing about what was on cable news about Sotomayor. It was pathetic. Geitner gave a priceless scornful look to Obama when he came in to a room to take burger orders (distraction trip). I think he was pissed he was being ignored.

That part of the special was not flattering at all to the Obama admin. They looked like a bunch of amatuer politcal hacks. Completely unconcerned about actual issues and only worrying about politics. It made me furious.

Joe Caps on June 3, 2009 at 4:29 PM

Overheard at the White House…

Williams: “Don Obama, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me on this, the day of your daughter’s wedding, I mean this, the day of your hamburger run. And I hope that your next child be a masculine child. I pledge my never-ending loyalty.”

I don’t trust him, or anyone from NBC,or MSNBC. Being owned by GE, and so in the tank for Obama, that they’re willing, to shirk their journalistic integrity, and protect Obama, and mask the truth, makes him suspect. Especially when their owner is working toward a multi billion dollar deal with the Government, from cap, and trade.

No one from any of these companies, is to be trusted. They’re working toward putting the screws to anyone, and everyone that uses electricity, or fuels in this country. That means EVERYONE, and it will destroy this country. So classic? No way. Complicit? Absolutely!

Actually, if you look at the whole context of the Obama – NBC relationship, there is something to see.

Two men saying a farewell to one another, the nod is indeed nothing.

A bootlicking, submissive, and national figure bowing to the target of all his affections, is something else entirely. And Williams deserves all the scorn he get’s from it.

That’s not a ‘nod’. It was a bow

Obama did not bow back; in Japan that would be a blatant show of total disrespect; even if your lackey bows to you in Japan, you must return a significantly more abrupt bow to acknowledge. Not doing so is pretty much the same as slapping someone in the face here

So, Brian kissed butt, and was dissed Big Time
