Video: Did Brian Williams bow to Barack Obama?

posted at 11:29 am on June 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Drudge has this one, and Stormin’ Morning Java has the still. When I first saw it, I thought, “Nah. Brian Williams must have looked down. Americans don’t bow to their political leaders, and especially not the American media.” Wrong!

We made hay when Obama bowed to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, and this feels almost as bad. Shouldn’t the American media have more of a sense of separation, observance, and skepticism? All right, all right, stop laughing.

Bonus question: If Williams bowed, what would Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews do to wish the President a good night? On second thought, I don’t want to know.

And Williams is behaving like a subject not a citizen

clnurnberg on June 3, 2009 at 11:56 AM

The news anchor with no talent bowed to the emperor with no clothe. And the emperor with no clothe bowed to the emperor with plenty of oil (Saudi King). Now that’s the new world order for you. :(

poxoma on June 3, 2009 at 11:56 AM

I watched this special last night, knowing I would be nauseated, and I was. The other half is on tonight. In Brian’s intro, he mentioned the “other presidents who had lived here, but none like this one.” How very true! None of them were muslims with a goal to destroy the United States!!!

silvernana on June 3, 2009 at 11:56 AM

I think we know what Matthews wants to do, thrill running up his leg and all

Serve thy master, Williams.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 3, 2009 at 11:56 AM

I vote nod. Obama’s bow to Abdullah was much more.

Ferris on June 3, 2009 at 11:51 AM

Obama could practically get Abdullahs zipper in his teeth he was bowing so low (wait, do they wear zippers…?) but that doesn’t change the fact that Willams was clearly bowing – his upper torso moved.

Brat on June 3, 2009 at 11:58 AM

I just don’t think this is a bow, but Williams does look pissed he didn’t get to second base.

lorien1973 on June 3, 2009 at 11:58 AM

Meh – I’ve done the same when saying goodbye/good night to somebody before and always considered it a ‘nod’ and not a ‘bow’.

Of course BW was probably bowing in allegiance to his Messiah.

rockbend on June 3, 2009 at 11:58 AM

And you’ll notice that Obama doesn’t even react in surprise…

I guess Larry Sinclair isn’t the only one who’s gotten on his his knees with Obama…

I bet Mr. Williams still hasn’t washed his hands.

Over/under on whether he is having a reliquary built to house the stray M&M he snatched off the floor?

bekarlss on June 3, 2009 at 11:59 AM

I think you’d be hard pressed to call this a bow.

lorien1973 on June 3, 2009 at 11:38 AM

It’s a modified bow.

I have Asians in my family, I know what it looks like.

In fact, I do it too when around elders.

Actually at first glance of that bow-to-the-Saudi King photo, for a second I thought it was about Lewinsky and Bill. ;)

poxoma on June 3, 2009 at 12:00 PM

I’ve never seen the media bow before a President, and I would say that this was clearly a bow, a head nod would be acceptable. But in American etiquette you are to shake hands or stand for our President. I’ve even seen the media not stand for the President, in the case of Bush.

Maybe Williams stepped on O’s foot and was looking down

kthomas8268 on June 3, 2009 at 12:00 PM

I’m still in awe that America hasn’t wised up to the dictatorial state that is the community organizer in chief.

ErinF on June 3, 2009 at 12:01 PM

A head bob of respect. People do that all the time. No sheik-curtsy, that’s for sure.

OxyCon on June 3, 2009 at 12:01 PM

It’s not a bow. Stop getting distracted. We have these things to think/ponder/scream a lot about:

1. Executive branch rape of our economic system
2. Executive branch rape of the private sector
3. Executive + general liberal rape of our national security and the military
3. General liberal rape of our healthcare system
4. The selling out of the following, though not limited to:

-the constitution
-traditional values
-the rule of law
-fair, free, legal elections
-Israel

And I know I missed a few. So, let’s keep our eyes on the ball.

Mommypundit on June 3, 2009 at 12:02 PM

Even if he was, we don’t bow in American culture.

There is no precedent for this.

Williams needs to be reprimanded and maybe even removed from his job.

artist on June 3, 2009 at 12:03 PM

I know, Seven. There are times I feel like we’re Paul Revere yelling “The British are coming! The British are coming!”. And the Colonists are yelling back, “Big Hairy Deal!”.

kingsjester on June 3, 2009 at 11:57 AM

Me too, exactly. But that phase is over. Few listened, so only a few options present themselves. But no matter what, the probability that things will get much worse is now 100%

1. Things continue down this road. 70% chance.
2. Civil disobedience slows things down. 10% chance.
3. Violent protest challenges the gov’t. 5% chance.
4. Enough people who voted for him change their minds and curb his power. 15% chance.

If the 2010 midterms don’t repudiate Obama, it’s time to sell-up. If he’s able to run again in 2012, it’s time to move and wait him out.

Just like Pravda stated; letting go of democracy with only a whimper. But with liberals it is a whimper of bowing subservience, willing en-enslavement and actual fleshly lust. Grown men are so enamored with the cipher, it is downright grotesque.

Brainwashed

You look like a real human being
But you don’t have a mind of your own
Yeah, you can talk, you can breathe
You can work, you can stitch, you can sew
But you’re brainwashed
Yes you are, yes you are
Get down on your knees

You’ve got a job and a house
And a wife, and your kids and a car
Yeah, you’re conditioned to be
What they want you to be
And be happy to be where you are
Yes you are
Get down on your knees
Get down on your knees

The aristocrats and bureaucrats
Are dirty rats
For making you what you are
They’re up there and you’re down here
You’re on the ground and they’re up with the stars
All your life they’ve kicked you around and pushed you around
Till you can’t take any more
To them you’re just a speck of dirt
But you don’t want to get up off the floor
Mister you’re just brainwashed

They give you social security
Tax saving benefits that grow at maturity
Yeah, you’re contented to be
What they want you to be
And to do what they want you to
Yes you are, yes you are
Get down on your knees

MSNBC Headline: Brian Williams’ Two-Second Scoliosis Scare

LibTired (KO) on June 3, 2009 at 12:12 PM

He [Williams] just dropped something.

Yeah, his dignity.

BTW, it was the informal bow as seen at 1:10 of this video of H.M. the Queen at an elementary school with the town’s mayor. (Contrasted with the full bow when receiving an official honour, like a knighthood.) British, Australian, Canadian et alia posters can attest to what that was. And it wasn’t a “nod”. Get a dictionary.

andycanuck on June 3, 2009 at 12:15 PM

That doesn’t look like a bow to me. A nod of acknowledgment and/or gratitude for the president taking the time to do the interview.

If you want to see the media acting ga-ga over him, get the clip of his surprise visit to the press room right when he first took office. That was puke-worthy (and he treated them like crap to boot).

This doesn’t look like anything to get excited about.

Why is anyone surprised, Brian Williams works for NBC news…home of the Obama Campaign.

I won’t see surprised if Olbermann doesn’t throw another tantrum that he wasn’t the first to bow down in front of “The One”!

Williams had more credibility when he hosted SNL, where he was actually funny. In his “real job”, Williams is just a puppet to push the agenda.

There is nothing wrong with showing your respect for an elder with a bow. In fact where I am from it was customary for a well bred man to doff his hat when meeting a stranger male or female.

But I do think this shows an over board reverence for this fool Obamugabe.

TheSitRep on June 3, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Those of you claiming that this is not a bow, but a nod, please cite any definition for nod that includes leaning the upper body down as Brian Williams clearly does to Obama in the video and the image from Stormin’ Morning Java.

I can find no such definition of “nod” that corresponds with your usage or Brian Williams’ obsequious behavior.

Loxodonta on June 3, 2009 at 12:24 PM

That is seriously scary. I didn’t think Brian Williams was actually a watchdog looking out for my interests, but — wow.

Everyone remember the movie Coming to America with Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall? Remember the early scene with Murphy’s crown prince character and his “bathers”?

That’s what the MSM remind me of, with Obama: the crown prince’s bathers.

J.E. Dyer on June 3, 2009 at 12:24 PM

The president said the United States and other parts of the Western world “have to educate ourselves more effectively on Islam.”

“And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world,” Mr. Obama said. “And so there’s got to be a better dialogue and a better understanding between the two peoples.”

Brian Williams is already converted, that’s all.

I sense an underlying attitude from Americans about the direction of this administrations Marxist policies. I don’t care for the polls, but rather the young people who I have spoken to who supported ChimpyO. When they remember what they were warned about pre-election and see the reality of those warnings coming true, they are becoming less vocal and almost resigned to the fact they were fooled once again by a smooth talking charlatan politician. They aren’t admitting they were wrong, but they certainly are not regurgitating his lies.

We as Americans are generally slow to anger, but when we do, we will kick some asses! I pray that this generation that fell for his lies and subterfuge, will come out of this as conservatives and once again sanity will put the liberals back in the rubber rooms where they belong.
