Newt: Sorry about the “racist” allegation

posted at 2:15 pm on June 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

After Sonia Sotomayor’s 2001 remarks at UC Berkeley came to light last week, in which she claimed that her Latina heritage and gender made her a better judge than a white male, pundits rightly criticized Sotomayor and the identity politics that remark represented.  In fact, even the White House eventually conceded that Sotomayor had chosen her words poorly, distancing themselves from the sentiment she clearly expressed.  However, some of the criticism involved calling Sotomayor a “racist”, which became another flashpoint for the backlash against Sotomayor’s critics.  Now the most prominent of those critics has begun walking back the comment:

Shortly after President Obama nominated her to a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, I read Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s now famous words:

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

My initial reaction was strong and direct — perhaps too strong and too direct.  The sentiment struck me as racist and I said so. Since then, some who want to have an open and honest consideration of Judge Sotomayor’s fitness to serve on the nation’s highest court have been critical of my word choice.

With these critics who want to have an honest conversation, I agree.  The word “racist” should not have been applied to Judge Sotomayor as a person, even if her words themselves are unacceptable (a fact which both President Obama and his Press Secretary, Robert Gibbs, have since admitted).

So it is to her words — the ones quoted above and others — to which we should turn, for they show that the issue here is not racial identity politics.  Sotomayor’s words reveal a betrayal of a fundamental principle of the American system — that everyone is equal before the law.

Exactly.  Republicans have an opportunity to have a “grand debate” on judicial philosophy and equality under the law, and Sotomayor’s comments are a gift to the GOP in pressing their own position on the judiciary.  Most Americans believe that the rule of law should be gender- and ethnicity-blind and reject the notion that government and the courts should privilege one group over another based on their ancestry or sexual equipment.  Republicans have a golden opportunity to tap into that value, and to show that the Democrats are more committed to identity politics than ever before.

However, that opportunity will vanish if the public sees Republicans overreacting to the Sotomayor nomination.  The statement speaks for itself; we do not need to arrogate to ourselves the ability to peer into Sotomayor’s soul to determine whether she “hates” or is just enamored of identity-based outcomes.  The latter is sufficient enough to paint this nomination, and the man who made it, as problematic and troubling for the rule of law.  Getting hysterical only undermines the credibility of the opposition.

Newt gets it right the second time around, and he’s man enough to admit he blew it on the first try.

Blowback

However, that opportunity will vanish if the public sees Republicans overreacting to the Sotomayor nomination

Oh please. Give me a break. Stop staring at your navel and determining what the “public sees.” If anything, “overreacting” as you call it got the Left back the Presidency, the House and the Senate.

Come on people, it’s not like Obama got elected because he was qualified. Identity politics is on full display in the Obama administration and this is just the latest example.

She herself said she was qualified not because of her intellect but because of her race.

Sadly, Republicans will let her get through and we will be stuck with somebody as big into socialism and making up new laws as Obama is.

Newt needs to think before he speaks.

The lefty loons are having a field day with this faux pas. The damage is already done, Newt.

The truth doesn’t have to be retracted. Her comments and the LaRaza connection confirms the truth. Just another signal that Newt wants to run for President. I’m sure the MSM are so glad that he caved. Just another wimp Republican. And didn’t Newt want to tackle global warming. I’d say he has too much baggage to overcome, and now he’s pandering to the media.

Christian Conservative on June 3, 2009 at 2:24 PM

Make them play by their own rules Newt. One of Alinsky’s rules. You had them doing that and coming out sputtering about it. Now, you’ve lost that opportunity.

Until the Republicans understand that they must hold the democrats feet to the fire for everything they do and say they will lose.

darwin on June 3, 2009 at 2:24 PM

The Left has to do so very little to defeat the Right because the Right is simply too afraid to fight and speak the truth. They are so afraid of what “people will say” that they lose the battle before it is even fought.

karasoth on June 3, 2009 at 2:27 PM

It’s a balancing act for the Republicans to challenge Sotomayor on her unabashed theories of identity politics and grievance mongering policy prescriptions. No matter how the Republicans phrase the debate the Dems will try to characterize it as “hate speech.”

I wish he hadn’t retracted the word “racist” so much as he had taken the opportunity to frame the debate by focusing on her social views embodied in that (and other) speeches.

Yes. Seems to me that all true conservatives should just turn and walk away from the Republican Party and start the Constitution or Freedom party. Keep the Republican Party platform and reject those who don’t stick to it. If our tea party goeers, conservative pols, radio talk hosts and Fox news folks would get behind this, I believe it could be done effectively.

The the GOP senators do their job. There’s no way she won’t be confirmed. But the GOP can pin a label on her–a liberal hack. If the GOP can draw some huge red circles around her extremely liberal judicial philosophy, Obama will have a very difficult time going farther left with the next appointments–and he’s sure to have two more: Ginsburg and Stevens. I’ll be any amount of money that the retire before the end of the first term, just to ensure Obama is making the pick.

Wait? The left can go hyperbolic, but now we are praising Newt for backing down?

Are we now backing away from the proposition that the definition of racist is someone who claims that one race and gender is better than another merely for on the basis of gender and race.

I don’t applaud this, we are losing yet another word for the convenience of allowing the left to beat up our guys and save theirs.

I don’t applaud tortured logic to avoid offending people who live and die by being offended.

Take a stand and stick with it. If Sotomayor gets in, she will have more power to impact policy and lives for years to come than Rush Limbaugh or Newt Gingrich will have for years to come.

drewmesq on June 3, 2009 at 2:41 PM

“The lefty loons are having a field day with this faux pas. The damage is already done, Newt.”

Yeah. Now they’re calling us racists and bigots and all. Never happened before. When will we wingnutz learn that the only way we can win is by tailoring our arguments to Lefty standards, so as not to offend the moderates who aren’t paying attention anyway?

Not trying to be too hard on you there, Knuck. But damn, I’m tired of our side fretting about what others who don’t argue in good faith think. To hell with them; the woman made a plainly, unequivocally, inarguably racist remark, and we’re not allowed to make an observation about the obvious conclusion? Because the Leftards think it unfair?

Uh uh. Not me. Not ever. Newt called a spade a spade, that’s all. But if he’d called it a manual dirt-displacement device instead, he’d still be a “racist” to those for whom it’s the favorite arrow in the quiver.

We keep bringing knives to a gunfight, and wondering why where all these bulletholes in our chests are coming from.

If you treat liberals with respect, you will always lose every argument. Doesn’t matter whether it’s about Communism, abortion, Global Warming, Crystal Therapy or anything else under the sun.

Every liberal argument is based on two things:

1) Self-righteousness; and

2) Absolutely nothing else.

If you concede that liberals are personally beyond reproach, you have lost every argument before it begins. If you take that away from them, they have nothing to fall back on.

I think people here are missing the big picture. Screaming RACIST so that everyone looks at you and then speaking in more measured tones works. I have no idea if that was Newt’s plan or not, but it works. Screaming racist, then yelling racist, then holding up a sign reading “racist” doesn’t work. It may be true, but it doesn’t work. You can play the press and the public like a puppet if you know what you are doing. If you want to convince vast numbers of people that you are right, you can’t just speak the truth. You have to paint your speech in a way that will convince the unwilling. THAT is an art. Political types know that. Comments on blogs sites don’t need to convince anyone but a small fraction of people reading their comment.

As I said before, I’m am by nature a bomb thrower. But changing public opinion when the public doesn’t want it’s opinion changed takes a bit more delicate touch.

It’s easy to romanticize Newt but it’s his “ready, fire, aim” approach that got him bounced out of the speakership when he was deserted, ultimately leading to the demise of the repubs in the house years later.

He has no chance of ever being president and he knows it. If he could somehow change his personality he would have been president already.

So it is to her words — the ones quoted above and others — to which we should turn, for they show that the issue here is not racial identity politics. Sotomayor’s words reveal a betrayal of a fundamental principle of the American system — that everyone is equal before the law.

This is very smart, and a more likely winning strategy. Even if Judge Sotomayor is confirmed, let’s make Obama and his liberal allies in Congress and the MSM defend the clear meaning of Sotomayor’s words.

Exactly! Nicely said. I nominated you for the head of the new party. If you don’t want it, then how about at least head of communications?

TheBigOldDog on June 3, 2009 at 2:48 PM

right4life as head of communications? Brilliant!

DarkCurrent on June 3, 2009 at 3:31 PM

I’m late to the conversation, but if we are nominating, we need a psychiatrist to survive the next three plus years….I nominate Sigmund.
And for philosopher……I cannot recall his name right now, Dr???, i have a double ear infection and have been acting like a blonde the last couple of weeks, gotta get some meds to get smart again, but he always comes along, with longer than usual posts and just seems to put it all in order. Our voice of reason, so to speak.

While were brainstorming, how about some proposals for a shadow cabinet?

Here are some of my ideas:

Secretary of State: upinak
Secretary of Defense: hawkdriver
Secretary of Treasury: rockmom
Secretary of Interior: JetBoy
Secretary of Energy: TexasJew
Secretary of Housing & Urban Development: ernesto
Secretary of Education: blantantblue
National Security Advisor: baldilocks
Director of CIA: coldwarrior
WH Press Secretary: right4life

Just a start…

The democrats are the gatekeepers to the “racial debate”. They and only they may begin a discourse on racism in this country. White people can’t ever discuss racism against anyone because: 1) White people are by their very nature racists 2) there can NEVER be any racism against white people.

Could I please get SecNav?

Rightwingguy on June 3, 2009 at 3:45 PM

Newt probably doesn’t want to distract from more important issues… like Global Warming.

He might have just said:

I mis-spoke. I didn’t mean she was racist, I meant to sat that her comments were racist. Sorry for any confusion.”

Newt walks back from the truth, sad

E9RET on June 3, 2009 at 3:48 PM

If that “comment” was the only evidence of racism, Newt might have a point.

But the truth is, most of Sotomayor’s adult life has been involved in race/class/sex grievance mongering of one sort or another. Add that she STILL belongs to “The Race”, a truly despicable racist organization, the only conclusion is that she is, in fact, a typical leftist racist/sexist.

Newt is supposedly a smart guy, certainly smarter than me, if he cannot see the overwhelming evidence, then he’s being deliberately blind.
