Nope. Stewart actually attacked Obama/the federal government for giving GM $20 billion and then encouraging GM to go bankrupt 6 months later. Stewart’s words: “We could have done that for FREE!” He then went on to mock Obama’s proud declaration that we done bought ourselves a car company by pointing out the stupidity of buying a miserably failed company. Stewart said something like, “So, for just $30 billion more, we got part-ownership of . . . a company worth negative $90 billion.” Stewart then begged Obama to consider buying us a company that’s actually profitable instead of all these crapola companies, which he compared to “buying stuff out of the bargain bin – you know, with the one-legged Barbie dolls and stuff like that.” Credit where credit is due – he cut to the heart of it and laid it right at Obama’s feet.

Apparently not, as long as the money is coming out of the original TARP authorization the Administration does not have to go back to Congress. Presumably someone on Capitol Hill will have the balls to insist on some oversight hearings, but I wouldn’t bet on it for a while.

Shouldn’t this GM bailout crapola been run thru Congress or is this the first official act of one of our many Czar’s?

GMAC is apparently keeping its lobbyist too, and it spent over $5 million last year on lobbying, as the government took a 35% share of it. So now all the private banks are competing with a largely government-owned GMAC, which can offer subsidized, artificially low interest rates to buyers of government-subsidized GM and Chrysler cars, and can still lobby the Administration and Congress for even more bailouts and other favorable terms to keep it afloat. This is insane.

If I’m Toyota or Honda, I’m going straight to the WTO to file an unfair trade complaint on this. How are they supposed to compete fairly against Government Motors and GMAC?

The government lobbying the government wow I wonder what for more government perhaps.

Now I know that we have entered bizarro world.

I don’t think it’s legally possible to sue yourself.

GM has (had?) various lawsuits or claims against the federal government. Are they still valid? Is there a case for conflict of interest?

Also, in the event that a consumer brings a product liability suit against GM for a defective product (say, a wrongful death), are we, the taxpayer, liable for any monetary award? More importantly, can you sue the US government (as owner) in this circumstance?

What about lawsuits filed against GM prior to the bankruptcy filing? Are they still valid?
